Some Downloaded Photos are Rotated in Aperture

When I download my photos into Aperture and when I shoot tethered, some photos will be oriented the correct way and some will be roatated.  There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to this.  I can take a series of shots the exact same way and some will download right and some will download rotated.  I can't seem to find an answer for this annoying problem.  Anyone have a cure for this? Thanks.

If the picture includeds orientation data (landscape/portrait orientation) Aperture automatically rotates the image to the correct orientation.
Some cameras don't have an orientation sensor built into them so they don't know if they are portrait or landscape.
However, if your use an image stabilised lens on such a camera, the image stabiliser can then provide the orientation data.
I suspect your camera doesn't have such a sensor, and the images where Aperture is correctly rotating were taken with a stabilised lens, while the ones where it doesn't were taken with a non-stabilised lens.

  • Some downloaded apps are oriented sideways when my iPad is sideways in my Zaggfolio keyboard case and I cannot find any way to rotate my iPad screen so the App appears vertically

Some downloaded apps are oriented sideways, because my iPad is sideways in my Zaggfolio keyboard case, and I cannot find any way to rotate the apps so they are vertical when my iPad is horizontal in my Zaggfolio case.  I sent a question to the app developers and one of them responded that I had asked a good question and they would consider it on their next update.  Does that mean that I have to remove my iPad from my keyoard case every time I want to use those apps.  This issue is only happening on some apps.  Also, my iPad is not in the locked position.

You can lock the rotation with the little slider switch located under your volume toggle. however locking rotation is an 'all or nothing' proposition. you can't choose the portrait or landscape in a 'per app' basis.
In addition there are some apps that don't rotate.
When I use an app that wants to be in portrait with my zagg folio I just turn it and hold it that way. the lack of ease of rotation is the oen major downfall of that case.

  • Some photos are rotated within the wrong orientation

Hello fellow mac users, I am having a strange issue and would like your help.
Following a corruption of my iPhoto database, I used a third party software to repair the database. I also did additional things like repair thumbnails, etc... I managed to repair the library but I am now having a strange issue.
Portrait photos are rotated within the portrait frame. To repair, I need to swap the resolution in Photoshop:
    1. What I see in iPhoto.
    2. Rotated photo in iPhoto. This is obsviously distorted.
    3. Original photo after inverting resolution in photoshop...
Is there a conveninent way to perform a batch repair without having to open every photo one by one in photoshop??? I hame probably more than 500 photos like that!!!
    Thanks in advance!

The picture now looks fine in iPhoto (thumbnail is still wrong)
    Then try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.
2 - Run Option #2, Rebuild Thumbails.  It might take more than one try.

  • Photos are rotated correctly on PC but 90 degs out on iPad????

Photos are rotated correctly on PC but 90 degs out on iPad????

Found the issue. BAD "EXIF" file data. Spent a few hours searching for EXIF editor to modify.
Ended up using "PICTOMIO" to edit camera orientation data. Worked OK.

  • Slideshow photos are rotated 90 degrees in idvd...

Although my photos appear in the proper landscape or portrait view in iphoto, when I drag the photos into the idvd slideshow screen some of the photos are turned 90 degrees so that some the portraits become landscapes. There does not seem to be any way to rotate the photos once they are in the slideshow, only to change their position. Anyone know any tricks??

when I drag the photos into the idvd slideshow screen some of the photos are turned 90 degrees so that some the portraits become landscapes.
This is a problem, it does not happen when I drag or import a portrait photo from iPhoto.
I'd start with rebuilding my iPhoto library per Apple's directions:
It's a good idea to make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library folder (located in your Pictures folder) before rebuilding it.
    To rebuild the library:
If iPhoto is open, quit it.
Hold down the Command and Options keys, and open iPhoto
iPhoto opens and rebuilds your library.

  • TS3989 Photos are ok in aperture and iphoto but in photostream on ipad and iphone the top of all portrait photos is chopped off. I tried switching photostream off and on but got the same. Only happened with photos added today, all past photos are fine

I have never had any problems before but all portrait photos added today have the top chopped off. For example , people's heads are missing or roofs or buildings are chopped off. Photos are fine on the camera and on my mac in iphoto and aperture. Switched off photostream on my ipad...all photos were deleted. Switched photostream back on and all photos uploaded again and portrait photos are cropped again

It sounds like while trying to import the photos with insufficient disk space those image files were damaged and not copied fully.  Now that you have sufficient space (a minimum of 10 GB is recommended) the latest imports are good.
What do you get if you export one of the problem photos out of iPhoto as Kind=Original and try to open it with Preview.  If it appears the same then there's nothing you can to do recover them.

  • Portrait oriented photos are rotated in Instant Movies

When I create an Instant Movie in Premiere Elements 11 for Mac, any stills that are included that are shot in portrait orientation get rotated 90 degrees to the left and are diplayed on their sides during the movie.  They display correctly in the organizer and when viewed in Preview, but the act of putting them in an Instant Movie flips them on their sides.  I've looked through all the settings and preferences that I can find to look for a way to prevent this from happening, but I haven't found it.  I can go into the timeline and then flip the photos back one at a time, but what a pain.

What do your computer resources look like? I know you are running Premiere Elements 11 Mac, but how much installed and available RAM and free hard drive space?
    and
What orientation are these images when viewed at their hard drive save location?
I am strictly an Elements Windows user, but basically Premiere Elements 11 Windows and Mac operate the same. There are differences.
For this test, I used Premiere Elements 11 on Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bit, dual core, 3.2 GHz, 8 GB installed RAM, about 6 GB RAM available, and about 1 TB free hard drive space.
I took 17 photos (sized 3000 x 4000  - 4000 x 3000 pixels) into a 1080i30 project and applied the Instant Movie Celebration. Ten of the 17 were portrait oriented 3000 pixels width and 4000 pixels height and 7 of the 17 were landscape oriented 4000 pixels width and 3000 pixels height. The photo orientation was not changed in the resulting Instant Movie. So, under those conditions I cannot invoke a basic flaw in Premiere Elements 11 Windows Instant Movie even when using pixels dimensions beyond the limits of the project settings.
Where does that leave us....to rule in or out....
    1. Pixel Dimensions which are oversized for the project can cause problems even in Premiere Elements 11 depending on computer resources. As an experiment, could you resize one or twenty and see if that makes a difference in the portrait rotation even though I have no evidence for that being a factor in my Windows model today.
    2. The Instant Movie and Premiere Elements media trace back to what is viewed at the hard drive save location for the photos. What does that look like?
    3. I have no evidence that the 4:3 photos in a 16:9 project are at issue; neither 1 to 17 oversized for the project photos being the issue if all that is on that Timeline is combo of 3000 x 4000 and 4000 x 3000 photos. How did you make sure evaluation of the issue?
    a. Did you take 20 of those 3000 x 4000 photos into a new project and apply the same Instant Movie to them and ended up with them all rotated? Or did you just remove 1 to 20 of them from the existing Timeline, leaving the landscape oriented ones and those .mov videos as is? Did you find any difference in this matter if your Timeline was without the video included?
Just some thoughts for now as I think about this some more.
Looking forward to your follow up.

Add On...What computer resources did you have for your Premiere Elements 7 where you seem to be saying that you used 4000 x 3000 - 3000 x 4000 photos under similar circumstances as now and had no problems. Assumed a Windows experience.
Add On...I did not see Nealeh post until after I had posted mine.

  • Why are photos are rotated when I post them on a forum?

These pictures have been rotated in my photo Library to the best orientation (vertical) but when I upload them to a forum, they come out horizontal, requiring everyone to crane their necks to view them. The forum itself does not offer any photo editing, so I can't re-rotate them. I am uploading directly from my computer; is this my error? Will they be correctly oriented if I go through photobucket or another hosting site?

quit going directly into your library to get them - export them and then upload - or click here for a longer discussion on how to safely and correctly access your iPhoto photos - be sure to follow the links.

  • HT1539 Some downloaded movies are in HD and won't play on my iPod Classic.  How can I get the SD version without having to buy another version?

How can I get the SD version of HD movies that I already own and are downloaded on my computer.  These HD movies won't play on my iPod Classic.

Just figured out how to get the SD version of HD movies to play on the iPod Classic.  In the iTunes Store, look at the purchased list and down at the bottom where it lists the Total: # Movies, to the right is a checkbox [ ] Download HD When Available.  If you uncheck the box, it allows you to get the SD version of those HD movies from the cloud.

  • Recently upgraded to Windows 7. Some downloads requested are diverted to Windows Explorer although Firefox has been set up to send them to documents. How fix?

This does not happen with websites that open download directly to PDF files. It happens with video files such as those from Revolution Golf. It did not occur with Windows XP.

Feedback helps contributors and many other users.
Have you tried to download to Windows Explorer to see what happens? You could find that there will be later offers to download to Documents, Desktop, Pictures etc. Or a search may find just where the PDF has gone.
Try going to Options>Applications>Your PDF Reader> Preview in Firefox.
You can then download PDFs to your browser and then Save them to Documents or wherever you want.

  • Problem with some synced photos to my iphone rotating incorrectly

I recently synced a folder of photos in My Pictures to my iPhone 4 via iTunes.  68 picture...21 were taken in a portrait rotation, the rest were landscape.  I had no tropuble with the landscape photos.  But, after the sync, 5 of the 21 portrait photos had the wrong rotation.  From my basic troubleshoot...they are not all rotated incorrectly in the same direction and I confirmed that they all have a similar resolution as at least one of the correctly oriented portrait photos from the same sync.  Editing and saving the picture directly on the iPhone is not an option because I am only given the option to save an edited photo to the Camera Roll album.  It is extremely frustrating.  Why does this process ignore the native orientation of only some of the synced photos?  I'd be less confused if it mess up all of the portrait photos.  I would very much appreciate any advice to fix this seemingly arbitrary malfunction.  Thank you.

I'm having a problem where when I import my iPhone photos into Picasa, photos are rotated incorrectly (even when viewed in Finder). Landscape photos are upside down, portrait photos aren't rotated to portrait orientation. I suspect this has someting to do with the iPhone saving photos without rotating them based on iPhone orientation and instead adding EXIF data to indicate the orientation based on something I read online, but I don't really know. When viewing info for a portrait photo in Preview, it indicates Y resolution is less than X resolution (which is what it should be for landscape photos only), and on the TIFF tab says Orientation 1 (Normal).
So my question is, why is it not being rotated properly in the iPhone for use on other devices? How can I fix this?
It should be noted that important photos with iPhoto or Image Capture makes it display properly in Preview and Finder with updated Orientation information, but still not in Firefox (so... good for some software on your Mac but even still not if you intend to send the picture to anyone... MAJOR BUG ).
BTW using iPhone 4s with latest version of iOS 5.1.1, Mac OS X Mountain Lion.
    PS VIdeo orientation is perfect.

  • HT201317 Download photos from photostream Windows XP only

Photo stream is the only place where some important photos are now saved after a failed software update required a backup restore on my iphone.  I desperately need to access the photos there to download them and save them.  Is there any way?

Set up iCloud on your PC (see http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/pc.html), sign into your iCloud account and enable photo stream.
Note: iCloud only keeps photo stream photos in iCloud for 30 days.  When you first enable it on your computer you will only receive photos added in the last 30 days.  To import earlier photos, you'll have to save them to the camera roll on your phone (tap Edit, tap the photos, tap Share, Tap Save to Camera Roll; if you're running iOS 5, tap the arrow button, tap the photos, tap Save), then import them to your computer as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.

  • HT2478 Why does the desktop photo application rotate my photos 90 degrees?

I have attached an image. The folder my photos are stored in is located below the Desktop and Screensaver app.
Notice that the orange arrows point from photos that are properly oriented in the folder they are saved in, but for some reason they are rotated when the desktop app pulls them up.
Does anyone know why this happening and how I can correct it?
    Thank you for the help
    Michael

That's one of the "Features" of iPhoto, it tags photos as rotared instead of actually rotating them, many other Apps will not recognize the tag & display them as they really are stored.
GraphicConverter has a powerful Browse Folder function, & many tools for manipulation, & you can keep your Pics wherever you want...

  • IPhone edited photos are imported as originals

I use iphone4 (IOS 7) and MBP (OSX 10.8.5). Iphone edited photos are imported with Aperture or iPhoto as originals. How can I fix this?

The "edits" are temporary settings.  If another device such as a computer imports, the edits will not attach.  The edits become permanent when the host device (iPhone) exports the image.
