Some DVDs will not play in my Fall '10 i5 MBP

Hi everybody,
This morning I tried playing "Fantastic Mr. Fox" on my less-than-a-year-old Macbook Pro. I put the DVD in superdrive, and instead of hearing the familiar "whirring" or "winding up noise" followed by opening the DVD player app, I just hear a series of buzzes for about five-to-ten seconds before the disc is forcibly ejected. Thinking there might've been a problem with the Superdrive I tried Batman Forever, which loaded up normally. I then tried putting in Horton Hears a Who, which also buzzed and ejected. In total I've tried about ten discs, and three of them haven't worked. The backs of each disc are clean, and scratch-free and were all purchased from either Walmart or Target. They work on other DVD players around the house (PS3, Xbox 360, PC DVD player)
Does this particular superdrive have problems with certain studios' manufacturers?

Hi
Has it worked before ?
Is it just some DVDs that do not play ?
Do You burn CD/DVDs ? If so can it be so that You burned several in a row (>3 at same time) ?
I use a Cleaning DVD (with brushes - NO Liquid) from time to time. Do You ?

Hello there, tomazdes.
The following Knowledge Base article written for the USB SuperDrive, offers some practical steps to try when issues present themselves with particular content playback (feel free to skip Step 3 when working with an iMac or MacBook with built-in drives):
Apple Computers: Troubleshooting the slot-loading SuperDrive
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2801
Particularly:
Accepts discs but they don't mount or are automatically ejected
Make sure the drive is not placed upside down. The aluminum enclosure should be facing up as shown in section 1.
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
Connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port instead a USB hub.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
OS X Snow Leopard v10.6 or earlier: Open Apple System Profiler by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click More Info.
OS X Lion v10.7 and later: Click the Apple () menu and then hold down the Option key. Choose System Information from the menu.
If the disc continues to not be recognized, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
Cheers,
Pedro.

• What can I do, if a DVD will not play?

What can I do, if a DVD will not play?

You don't want to change the player Region Code. If I remember correctly you can only change the Region Code three times and it sticks to the last Region Code you selected.
Does the DVD play in another player?

• DVD will not play on standalone.

Ok so here's the deal. I imported my DVD using MpegStreamClip - this is a DVD previously built by me, but back in the days I used Pinnacle... which wasn't so long ago. I imported this DVD as .m2v and AIFF audio, and built a project in DVDSP 4. The simulations run fine and I have had no problems up until the point that I burn the DVD, and the DVD will not play on a standalone player.
When outputting from DVDSP, do I need to Burn/Build/Format/Build&Format? Is it one of my settings that I need to change?
I know this question has been asked before, but there seems to be no solution out there yet.

I have an HVDVD_TS folder, but not the usual VIDEO_TS folder - could this be evidence of my problem?
It's the smoking gun.
Keep your m2v files.
Take the aiff files and encode them in Compressor ac3/Dolby 2.
Create a new project in DVD SP. Make certain the SD button is selected.
Import ac3 and m2v assets and you are good to go.

• Some videos will not play in FF 4 (and earlier versions)

Some videos will not play in FF 4 (and earlier versions) particularly on facebook. I have the latest version of shockwave flash. Here's what I've tried and has not worked: disabled ad blocker, turned hardware acceleration on/off, installed WMP plug-in, installed VLC multimedia plug-in, installed quick time plug-in, changed plugin-container.exe compatibility to win98/ME. Samething in Win 7. Thanks.

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
Thank you.

• Upgraded to win7 from xp. Now some songs will not play without signing into an old Itunes id account.

Installed Windows 7 from XP. Downloaded itunes and imported the music library.
Now some songs will not play until I authorize this computer by signing  in using an old apple id. Now when I do that the message says too many devices on that id.
Is there a way to convert those songs to my current Apple id? Or is there a way to download them again under the new id?

Content is permanently tied to the Apple ID that it was acquired with.
If you desire the conent on your current Apple ID, purchase it with the current Apple ID.
For future reference, do not create a new Apple ID simply because of a change of email address.  Instead, update the Apple ID with the new email address.

• DVD will not play on a Windows machine

I authored a project that is a simple looping movie. I has not interface, I just set the .mov to start playing and continually loop. It plays fine on my MAC but will not play on a windows machine from a DVD. The files included on it are all .bup .ifo, and .evo files. This is unusual because typically all the DVD burned .vob files to a DVD. Is there some setting I am missing when burning the dvd?

Wellcome to the forum!
What software are you using to play the DVD? If you make a little search in this forum you'll find a lot of threads about problems with DVDs running under Windows Media Player.
You can download free VLC Player to test your disks in Windows.
How did you burned the disc? If you want to be sure you are burning the right disc format anf the right files, make a Image file from DVDSP and burn it with Toast or Disk Utility. Take a look at this link for Creating Disc Image in DVDSP (from www.kenstone.net site).
Hope it helps!

• DVD will not play in standard player?

Rookie to DVDSP. Created project in FCP, exported using Quicktime movie, brought into DVDSP and created dvd, first as HD DVD and read that a standard dvd player will not play so I created new project using all standard settings and still nothing. Dvd player says cannot read disc. I have watched entire tutorial on Lynda, read manual, and researched topics concerning this but am still stumped. Probably something simple but I'm really over my head and have wasted a pile of dvds. Any help would be appreciated.

First of all thanks again, watched Lynda tutorial on compressor and was able to compress. Ok, used setting for creating dvd in compressor. When compressor was finished it asked me to insert media to burn to disk. I did. The resulting dvd plays on my dvd player but looks horrible. Way too bright and nothing close to my project in FCP. From some of the tutorials and discussions I've read I'm assuming it is because my color levels are not correct?

• Why do my songs and audio books keep getting erased when I add a new book?  Now some books will not play and the iPod does not keep track of where I was when I pause a book, leave for music and then go back!

About a month ago I added some new audio books to my iPod Classic and then after disconnecting, I discovered EVERYTHING had been erased.
I had to restore through my iTunes but then I could not load my music back on.
I uninstalled / reinstalled iTunes and completely reformated the iPod drive.
I successfully got my music and books back on but then added a new book two days ago only to discover everything got erased AGAIN!!!
Of course, my 1 Year Warranty was up about a week before the first incident.....
I formatted the iPod again, uninstalled / reinstalled iTunes (it was freezing during sync) and downloaded all my music and books again.
Now I have several books that will not play (they play on iTunes and they played on the iPod before all these events) and the iPod does not keep track of where I was in a book when I have to stop and go to something else.
Does anyone know what is going on with this thing???  I have a 5th Gen Video and in all the years I've had it, I've NEVER had problems like this!
Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to get my iPod Classic up and running properly again?
Thanks.

When iTunes/iPod sync process failed due to timeout, the iPod, has only the initilaised  filesytem structure at the start of the Sync.
The timeout failure could be due to
Bad hardisk - do the iPod disk diagnostic, refer to this excellent post by tt2
Slow USB port or resource - Dont use any USB hub, disconnect all other USB devices while syncing
Timeout due to Antivirus or other plugins - disconnect from Internet and stop the Antivirus or monitoribng software if you are syncing.
Preferably stop doing other things while syncing this ancient device, which the latest iTunes designer, think will soon be extinct.
Have a nice day!

• DVD will not play on iMac in Bootcamp using Windows 8

I am trying to play a DVD in Windows 8 being run with Bootcamp on my iMac (OSX 10.9). The DVD will not autoplay in Windows. You can see the DVD in the folder view, but can only access the Video_TS and Audio_TS files, not the actual playable DVD. Have tried playing it through the folder view as well as Windows Media also to no avail. Booted down Windows and into Mac OS, and the DVD autoplays just fine. How can I get it to play in Windows mode, as the software we are running for a certain program needs to be accessed constantly before and after the DVD needs to play?

tried the vlc player it's free to download and works better then other players really

• Some videos will not play (blank screen).

Some of my videos will not play. I select the video and a "Play" arrow shows in the upper left portion of the screen, but the screen is dark (blank). I can press Menu and return.
I don't believe it's a size issue because certain other larger videos do play. Nor do I think it's a format issue because all of the videos are the same format (*.m4v). It also doesn't appear to be a time/sync issue because some videos added after others do play and some don't.
I really don't have a problem reformatting and starting over if that is the best or only solution as I only use iTunes and don't have calendar, notes, etc.
Thanks in advance.
iTunes Ver 10.5.1.42
iPod Classic 30Gb Ver 1.3
O/S Windows XP SP3

Where are these from? Are they from the iTunes Store or where they downloaded elsewhere and then added to your library?  Perhaps you can try restoring your iPod to factory settings and then resyncing the videos back over to it.
If the videos are not from iTunes, perhaps you can try and re-convert them using a third party utility such as Handbrake or MPEG Streamclip.

• Finished DVD will not play

Hi,
I have burned my project to a DVD using FCPX. The problem is that it will not play in my DVD player (8 year old Sony player). It gets stuck on the first picture but the sound is running. I tried to play it on the Mac and on a PC, but the same problem there.
The project is made with HD1080i and 50i frame rate. When burning I set everything to default.
The camera I am using is a Canon Legria HFM46
Any ideas what the problem might be?

One thing that comes to mind is that your player may not be able to handle the default compression settings that FCP uses. If you have Compressor, you could dial those down to see whether that fixes playability problem.
If you follow Emilia's advice and make a disk image you can also reduce the burn speed, which might be a cause. It's not clear from your most recent response whether it played from the img on your computer. Sharing to DVD from a 1080 sequence should work perfectly well otherwise.
Good luck.

• DVD will not play in PS3

I am using ILife '08 to render and burn family dvd. The video is imported from Canon HD20 camera. Iphoto project as well burned on dvd. I am using one of the 7.0 themes from IDVD 16:9 ratio. I am using a Fujifilm -R dvd media. The first menu will load and play but when I select either the movie menu or the iphoto menu on the DVD it locks up and will not play.
I tried a regular DVD player and it plays but is jumpy on it. The video is about 3 minutes long but the it jumps around almost like the dvd is scratched (it is not) and only really plays about 1.5-2 minutes of the video. Does anyone have any suggestions.
The dvd plays fine in my macbook pro.

I wouldn't worry too much about Toast not working well with i-apps. My honest opinion is that Toast should be part of the i-Life apps since it DOES work so well.
I only have Version 7 though and not 9 (so I can't really comment on Roxio's latest and greatest app).

• Some Songs Will Not Play Even After Being Authorized

Just this past weekend, I had to reinstall Tiger and then upgrade to Leopard due to a “kernel panic” that would not go away no matter what was tried. As such, iTunes was started from scratch. Unfortunately, I could not locate my iTunes library within the Previous System folder after this reinstall. In all honesty, I probably just didn’t know where to look.
So, I transferred my music from my iPod to my iMac. But, some of my songs will no longer play. The songs that will not play are songs that I purchased and downloaded from iTunes. However, the recent songs purchased and downloaded will play…it’s songs that were purchased and downloaded a few months ago. Strange.
When I click these songs a box pops up for me to authorize it. I do so and it says that this computer is already authorized. I click on the song again and the same thing repeats itself.
I have two accounts that I have used. I have both accounts authorized on this computer. I have restarted with no success. I have unauthorized and reauthorized with no success. I’m afraid to sync my iPod in case these same characteristics transfer to my iPod.
I have not updated Leopard to the latest version as of yet since I just reinstalled from the disc orginally sent with my iMac. Any help is greatly appreciated as I’m out of ideas…

I had the exact same problem today. Two days ago I let Software Update auto-install Security Update 2008-008 (Client Intel) on my machine. I was rewarded with the gray screen and spinning wheel that never went away, and after hours of fruitless attempts to resolve the problem with Disk Utility and Terminal, I was forced to Archive and Restore to 10.4.8 and then rebuild my system back to 10.4.11.
I thought everything was fine after that until I went to play my iTunes music tonight. Though I'd had no problem playing music ripped from CDs, anything that I'd bought from the iTunes store wouldn't play -- it gave me the exact same error that you reported. I've followed all of Apple's troubleshooting steps -- repairing disk permissions, deleting the SC Info folder, etc., and nothing worked. I spent nearly an hour online with iTunes Chat Support and they say that my account tests fine on their end, so it's not iTunes -- something must have happened to my machine.
Personally, I think it was Security Update 2008-008. It's been nothing but trouble.
Now I have to pay $50 for a phone call to Apple Tech Support. Lucky me.

• I-DVD created DVD will not play back on i-Mac 27"

The i-DVD Tutorial says "When you have burned your DVD, you will have your own DVD that can be played in any DVD Player or any DVD-EQUIPPED COMPUTER"
Unfortunately I do not find this to be so, and I would like to know why, please. The DVD created is in UDF form. It plays back perfectly in my Liteon Player via the TV. It will play on my Windows PC via either WMP or Nero, BUT IT WILL NOT PLAY on my i-Mac, neither by Quick Time nor DVD Player. I get the message "not in a form recognised." Goodness! It was created on the i-Mac, via i-DVD !!
All my software is up-to-date of course.
Can anyone tell me WHY?

There are a variety of reasons why a burned DVD will not be recognized by a DVD player.
I'm interested to hear you say that you burned the disk with iDVD and yet the disk does not playback on the same computer that created the disk. If you put a standard purchased video DVD into the computer does it playback? If it does not then I would focus your attention on the Computer / DVD drive itself and not iDVD.
Things to try:
1.) Make sure the DVD disks you are using are compatible with your computer's optical drive. If you use a disk that is not supported by your computer's SuperDrive you may get inconsistent burn results. You can find out what types and speeds of disks your computer supports by going here and looking for the "SuperDrive" section under your model of computer: http://support.apple.com/specs/
2.) Older drives / players may not be able to read newer types of burnable media. Use DVD-R disks that list a lower speed. Burnable media comes with numbering on the original packaging that indicates the speed of the disk (Usually 1x,2x,3x, etc.). The lower the number the more compatible the disk will be with more DVD players.
3.) Try different brands of media. I personally try to stick with media made by companies with a long history of making recordable media.
4.) Lower the burn speed in iDVD:
iDVD > Preferences > Advanced > Preferred DVD Burning Speed
-- The lower the number you choose the more compatible the resulting disk will be with more DVD players. It will also increase the amount of time it takes to burn the disk.
Hope that helps
