Some email receipients can't open pdf - corrupted file message

I have sent an email with a pdf attachment created in Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro to a list of contacts. Most of the contacts are able to open the file with no problems. However, a small percentage are unable to open it, most stating that they are getting a message that the file is corrupted. It clearly isn't as when emailed back to me I can open it no problems.
Any ideas how I or they can resolve this issue.

The most likely suspect is that their email provider is using encoding to make the transfer of files faster. This is widely known to corrupt PDF's. To test either post the PDF file online and send them a link or Zip the PDF first then email it. If that works then you've found the problem.
As for why, when returned to you, they work. I can't say. Are they actually saving the file to their computer, attempting to open it and when it doesn't open, they are attaching THAT file to a new email to you or are they doing something else?
At any rate, try one of the suggestions above to see if that clears it up.

  • Can't open PDF, getting error message

i have worked on a pdf document which has been sent to me to fill in. i have filled it in and saved a copy and now when i try to open it i get the following message.
'This document enabled extended features in adobe reader. The document has been changed since it was created and use of extended features is no longer available. Please contact the author for the original version of this document.'
This has happened twice now on the same document, what does it mean?

    Hello Pranavj,
First - sorry if I am violating rules - posted this same question to another thread that showed the same error message.
I am getting the same message with a file I JUST got off IRS website.
It is the 2011 Form 8829.
I get the error when I double click on IRS link or try to open from local copy.  I can not open it from the web browser or from my local drive after saving it.   Nothing shows - I am never able to view the document - I have NOT made any changes to it.
    I am running Windows 7 64 bit, Adobe Reader X version 10.1.4.
After trying to open the doc (nothing displays) I go to properties, and it says ...
    Title: 2011 Form 8829
    Author: SE:W:CAR:MP
    Created: 12/23/2008P
DF Producer: Adobe LiveCycle DSesigner ES 8.2.
    PDF Version: 1.7 (Acrobat 8.x)
    Tagged PDF: No
    Fast Web View: No
I desperately want to fix this as I have 9 days before IRS sends troops to my house.

  • Can you open a corrupt file? Help!

I was working on a job application and when I went to re-open it (using text edit, doc.), it wouldn't re-open. It said the file may have been corrupted, truncated, or saved in a different format. What do I do????
Then I discovered Time Machine on my computer, which, since I didnt know about it before, hadn't been turned on yet (and no I have tried to and it's saying it can't detect an AirPort nearby ... I don't know why, I'm using it now for the Internet).
    Fml.

If a file is corrupted it's basically gone for good. So, make sure you're using the same program to open the file the second time as the first. If that doesn't do it, then hopefully it's just a one off fluke, because the other possibility is that this is an early warning indicator of a failing HDD. If you start having this issue with several more files, take your system in to be looked at.
And Time Machine is likely looking for some kind of external drive connected via a wireless connection, since it doesn't back up to your main drive for good reason. Unless you have an external HDD or a NAS like Apple's Time Capsule, there's no point to having Time Machine on.

    Hi Eidda,
This may because the attachment is a winmail.dat file. I would recommend taking a look at the article below for more information. Note: the article is written for OS X mail, but does also apply to this situation.

  • Can Not Open PDF Attachments

I can not open PDF attachments from outlook 2010. I am running windows 8  and using Adobe version 11.0.2  If I save the file to desktop, then it will allow me to open it and print it.
Thanks in advance for yor help.
the error says it can not open the file because it is unsupported or corrupt.

If you can't open the attachment, have your client/ customer or whatever fix their defective copy of Outlook and send real mail attachments not TNEF encoded rubbish. They are spewing defective email every time they click send on a mail with an attachment.

  • Can't open pdfs on iPhone 4s

My iPhone 4s will not open pdfs. The loading bar begins but then stops about a 1/4 inch in and the screen goes blank. How can I open pdfs? I have Adobe Reader on my phone.

I'm not even sure which reader it's using. I read online that Safari has it's own reader, but I also have Adobe so I'm not sure which one is trying to open it. I looked in my settings but I couldn't figure out how to determine my default reader. I'm just clicking on a link to a pdf on a website when this happens, although it also sometimes happens with email attachments. Some pdfs open, but most don't  - it seems kind of random.

Hi.  I have a Dell PC running Windows 7 64 bit.  I have the latest version of Adobe Reader,  It worked yesterday.  Today I have job training to do that is due tomorrow morning and I can't open PDF files.  I have to open a guide and read it and take a test tomorrow.  I have deleted and reinstalled the application.  I have rebooted.  I have made sure my PDF's are associated with the program.  Every PDF on my computer won't open and I get the same error message.  It simply says Attempt to access invalid address.  How can I fix this?  Thanks.

    Hi Don,
I have seen this issue fixed for some users by modifying the following registry key:
The key is "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management" MoveImages
Set the key to 1 instead of 0 then reboot the machine.
In case you still face the issue try the following registry key change:
The only thing you have to do is rename the following key at the REGEDIT, and everything will be fine !!
    BEFORE:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\iexplore.exe
    AFTER:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\iexplore.old
Note: Please take a backup of the registry before attempting this change.
    Regards,

    Hi Alex,
The trick to this whole thing is to scroll to the bottom of the message. There should be a dashed line at the bottom of the email message with text underneath it that says, "This message was downloaded as plain text." Underneath that it should say (in blue hyperlink text) "Download full message". Select that hyperlink, and the Excel file should download completely. You should then be able to select the document and have it open correctly.
I have had the same concern regardless of file format that is sent, so I do not believe your issue is with file format. Hope this helps.
I've seen the same thing happen with images, which it displays in a corrupted form. It's fixed by downloading the full message.
There's a more serious side effect of this, which I've now seen with several types of files. If one FORWARDS the email to someone else, the attached files it sends them are CORRUPTED and unopenable too. In the case of a Word files I looked at, it had dropped the last two bytes of the file.
The workaround for that is to download the full message before forwarding.
I'm seeing this happening with so many types of attachments that I'm assuming it affects them all. Please everyone report this to Apple feedback (http://www.apple.com/feedback/). It's one thing not being able to open a file on your device, it's another to have files corrupted permanently just by forwarding.

  • Can't open PDF files in Firefox 16.0.1

Mac OS 10.6.8, Firefox 16.0.1, PDF Viewer 0.6.39 installed. In Firefox>Preferences>Applications, PDFs are supposed to be handled by the PDF Browser 2.4.4 plug-in for Preview. However, when I try to view a PDF in Firefox, I get this:
"We are sorry, but Adobe Reader is unable to show documents in this browser configuration.
"Please use your browser to download this file and open it in Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat.
"To avoid this message in the future, many browsers provide a way to turn off certain add-ons, and some are able to show this document natively. Please contact your browser vendor for more details."
Why is Adobe Reader trying to open the PDF when Preview is the default? How do I disable Adobe Reader from doing anything in Firefox?

    cor-el, you nailed it.
There was a plug-in called "Adobe Acrobat NPAPI". With that disabled and the PDF Browser Plugin 2.4.4 enabled, I can now open PDFs in Firefox.

    Hi,
Thanks a lot for the screenshots and the information.Would it be possible for you to try the following at your end.
    1. Create another folder under C:\ with some Latin Characters such as Ö or ä (as being used in the redirected path for My Documents etc.). Now place any PDF in this folder and try and access the same. Are you able to access it this time?
    2. Redirect the My Documents folder to some other path which does not have any Latin character and see if the issue is still reproducible.

Can't open PDF's on my Mac coming in on MS Outlook 2010. Reinstalled Adobe software 4 x and still get "Adobe PDF Preview Handler" error message.

No. Reader will not damage files. It is only meant to read pdf files. PDF files are frequently damaged when sent as email due to encoding issues.

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.
