Some "funny" crashes

Hello,
I'm experiencing daily Aperture 2.1.1 crashes. Some of those are directly related to Aperture running, others are seemingly related to Aperture having run earlier (since previous reboot)
* On import of 1-2k images, the entire machine becomes ill. It'll show the spinner for tens of seconds, then run normally for a few secs, then show the spinner again, etc. etc. Only solution is to reboot.
* If I put the computer under some RAM pressure, e.g. have Aperture open, then open Pages and drag 150 images from the Media Browser => Pages, then the system becomes first unresponsive (cursor will move, but nothing else happens), then the display will corrupt completely, showing small rectangles of different colors (3-20 pixel side length) and be wholly messed up. Only solution is to reboot.
* If Aperture has run earlier, and done "real work", then it seems like overall system stability under load is impaired. I'll occasionally see the display corruption problem mentioned above.
* While not exactly a crash, the thumbnail display in Aperture can get corrupted: Aperture draws trash. Quit and relaunch => thumbnail is fine. So it seems like a display problem.
What I'm getting at is this: Aperture's use of the display hardware seems to corrupt something. The display adapter in my MBP is, as far as I know, using shared memory for 128MB of 256MB total, and maybe that's what's causing my problems.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I could pour more RAM into the box, but I think that's just painting over the problem: Using Aperture causes my system to become unstable. I think Aperture's use of the GPU is causing issues, some of it because the app causes OS X to leak system memory.
Re. activity monitor: Once the import has completed, activity is low. Indicated total RAM usage is well within the 2GB I have in the system. That's why I think it's system memory (or GPU memory) that's leaking. And leaked memory is rarely counted by tools like the activity monitor.

Running Mavericks OS on MacBookPro...had some hard crashes past 24 hours...forced reboots....now can't print anything from Office or Firefox.  Both crash during print dialog - changing printer causes instand crash.  My system printed fine before the crashes yesterday.  I can print from the Stickies app and safari printed fine.  I did a full Shutdown/restart and that didn't work.  Ideas on how to get PPT files to print again or print from firefox??

The report shows you don't have enough RAM required to run all of the apps you run at the same time. Yosemite takes way more RAM than what OS X used to take.
To solve the problem do either one of these:
restart your mac from time to time (every night for ex).
Use less apps at the same time.
upgrade to 8GB of RAM if your Mac allows it

I am trying to make some funny pictures by combining(cutting and pasting) different photos. Does anyone know how to do that? or know software that i can get?

You'll need an external editor for that kind of work.
In order of price here are some suggestions:
    Seashore (free)
    The Gimp (free)
    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)
    Pixelmator ($50 approx)
    Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
    Comic Life 2 (http://plasq.com/products/comiclife2)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate. You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • Some programs crash but not in safe mode or for guest user

Hoping that some talented and kind Mac wizard will help me solve a bizarre problem: Some but not all of my programs have started crashing immediately upon launch, but not in safe mode, nor when I log in as a guest user.
The problem began on February 5th, right after I installed an update to my OS (bringing it up to version 10.7.3), which included an update to the firmware for my computer, a Mac mini from mid-2010. The programs that began crashing upon launch *may* be those that were open at that time, but I can’t be sure. They include Adobe Reader, Picasa, Word for Mac, and a sweet little utility called uCalendarX.
Specifically what happens with, say, uCalendarX, is this:  After I launch it, nothing appears on screen for a few seconds, and then comes a message that it is trying restore its windows, with a choice of whether to attempt restoring them or not. After a few more seconds comes the news that it has quit unexpectedly. The first several dozen lines of the crash log appear at the end of this posting.
So far my troubleshooting has revealed the following:
    (a) When I reboot in safe mode, the programs that crash now work normally.
    (b) When I boot the usual way but log on a guest user, the programs that crash now work normally.
    (c) Fully emptying the trash made no difference.
    (d) The problem was not solved by restoring my hard drive (via Time Machine) to its state the day before I downloaded that update to the OS and the firmware. (This was a drastic step, the intervention of last resort, and I was sure it would work. But no. Perhaps I did not go back far enough for the restoration.)
    (e) Deleting the plist files and plist.lockfiles made no difference.
    (f) Deleting the files for the app under Saved Application States made no difference.
    (g) Disabing the user’s font cache (as happens in safe mode) made no difference.
    (h) Uninstalling Adobe Reader, emptying the trash, downloading the latest version, and installing that made no difference – this latest version newly installed continues to crash (but not for a guest user, nor for me, the administrator, in safe mode).
(i  ) Repairing permissions on the hard drive made no difference.
I will be mighty grateful for a solution to this perplexing, vexing problem!
B.t.w., I don’t know Unix but was able to do all those (fruitless) interventions listed above.

Thanks for thinking about my problem. I've already experimented with creating a new user, a co-administrator. The programs don't crash when that account is running, just as they don't crash when the guest-user's account runs. So it seems that the problem is limited to the default user's account, which is the one that was running when I installed the updates to the OS and the firmware. Another clue is that the programs that crash as soon as they are launched are *probably* the ones that were open at that time in that account. Yet deleting Saved Application States does not keep the programs from crashing when next launched.
So the mystery continues, but these additional facts will help with the diagnosis, I hope.
    Thanks again for your suggestion.

  • Some apps crash out when I close their window and switch to the Finder

It has been doing this since day one.  I'm a college student and bought a laptop to replace another really old mac system, to use as my main system.  The issue I'm noting is that on some apps, if I close out their window and switch to the Finder, by either click on the desktop, or by command tabbing.  The application seems to crash.  I say 'seems' becuase I'm not certain it's crashing.  It does this in Text Edit along with pages.  I'm trying to find out if it's supposed to this or if it's supposed to be a new feature.  There is never a crash log made that I know of, nor a dialog box stating the app crashed.  However, it does this by itself, without my quiting out the app by command q nor file>quit.
This has been relatively minor and hasn't caused any large problems.  To me it's an annoyance and inconviencning.  Which is why I waited until summer break at school to investigate.  Other classmates with older mac book pros but the same OS version have not had this problem.  Wondering if I have a botched isntall of OS X from the factory.  I've already had it in for service for the motherboard.  The cooling system was not correctly attached to teh CPU at the factory and cooked itself.
I'm tempted to do a reload of the OS from the diagnostics partition the system came with.  I haven't transferred much of anything from the previous system that this one is replacing.  Now would be an ideal time to do anything of this nature rather than say in the middle of next semester.
The issue occurs in TextEdit, Pages, and that's it so far.  I really have almost nothing loaded on the system.  I dual boot into another OS for using Maya and other various software apps.  The issue does not occur with Safari nor FireFox nor Preview.  It seems confined to Pages and TextEdit.  It can be extremely annoying however when typing an essay in Pages.  Perhaps it's a feature that was introduced that I can turn off?  Going from a 5 year old Mac Mini to a MBP, LOTS has changed.

Sorry for taking so long to reply.  It's still doing it.  I'm kind of wondering if something like a preferences file is corrupted, however, I have to do a total system reload to begin with to eliminate any potential corrupt data on the windows 7 install.
Back story.  When I first got this thing it was running super ridiculously hot.  It's the first laptop I've ever owned however so I had nothign to use for reference.  After about two months of it getting brutally hot, it did a BSOD in the windows 7 install I did via bootcamp.  It never turned back on.  Took it to the Apple store in Novi MI and they stated it somehow ran so brutally hot the CPU did a solder reflow and the whole motherboard shorted out.  Even worse though, I had gotten this hot before rendering stuff in Maya and Vue.  I had done burn in tests when I first received the system, it had passed, or so I thought.  They couldn't even get the system to turn on at the Apple Store.
The tech at the apple store told me that one of the heat sink pins on the CPU just plan broke off and another wasn't attached correctly.  Essentially the system kept overheating as I was consisently completely maxxing out the system doing CGI test renders for my junior animated short film.  The cooling system was never fully connected at the factory according to the Apple Tech.  I don't know how literate everyone reading this is on computer engineering but, when you overheat an IC, whether it's an ASIC or CPU, they dont' immediately crash, they corrupt data.  To further complicate the mess and increase teh chances of data corruption, with the 4th gen Intel i series CPUs (which the MBP uses), they moved the northbridge directly into the CPU die.  So if teh CPU is overheating, the chances of data corruption inadvertantly go up even higher.  I'm suspecting that happened in the first few days of owning the system but that it was minor at that point.  It can take months for the effects of corrupted data to propagate out and be visible to the user.
I would assume that they did a diagnostic test on the SSD when it was in for service, to ensure the SSD didn't overheat.  The tech did state that if the drive failed the diagnostics, they would have ot replace the drive and henceforth all my data would be gone.  Not really a way around it.
Currently under the windows 7 install with Maya and Vue, later iterations of the scene file, from Maya, for my animated short film, have a reproduceable glitch involving a gamma shift and camera selection.  Part of the scene files seem to be corrupt and were saved that way.
Reloading the OS from the recovery partition did not fix the original problem I've been having that I initially asked for help with.  I'm considering wiping out the recovery partition in addition to reinstalling windows 7 and OS X again, it would be the only way to completely eliminate the possibility of any corrupted data floating around on either partition.  I don't have a way of knowing if corrupted data was written to the SSD beyond the corrupted Maya scene files.  The only way I can be sure that it's 'contained' or eliminated, is if I completely wipe the drive and start from scratch.  Now would be a great time rather than in the middle of working on my senior thesis for my BFA degree.
I'm wondering if you could point me to documentation showing how to wipe out all the partitions, including the recovery one.  My understanding is that there is a way to do a 'net boot' or 'net recovery' over a broadband connection using Apples servers.  The idea of doing a Live boot from a Ubuntu distro to run fsck is appealing but it would be pointless.  The file system shoul be fine, it's the data the file system points to that I suspect is corrupted at somepoint.  Unless you recommend otherwise and or formatting.
The overheating also corrupted my journal but there is no way to recover it, I overwrote the earlier file(it looks like uncompiled C++ and jibberished text) when I saved it after completing an entry.  This was many months ago.  Though the idea of attempting a restore with Ubuntu Remix or other recovery Linux distros is appealing I'm doubtful I'd get far, though it's an SSD not a traditional harddrive and they don't work the same.
Back to the main point though, I suspect the overheating corrupted a prefs file which is causing the glitch I'm seeing, and reloading the OS did not fix it.

  • I want to load large raw XML file in firefox and parse by DOM. But, for large XML file the firefox very slow some time crashed . Is there any option to increase DOM handling memory in Firefox

Actually i am using an off-line form to load very large XML file and using firefox to load that form. But, its taking more time to load and some time the browser crashed. through DOM parsing this XML file to my form. Is there any option to increase DOM handler size in firefox

Thank you for your suggestion. I have a question,
though. If I use a relational database and try to
access it for EACH and EVERY click the user makes,
wouldn't that take much time to populate the page with
    data?
Isn't XML store more efficient here? Please reply me.You have the choice of reading a small number of records (10 children per element?) from a database, or parsing multiple megabytes. Reading 10 records from a database should take maybe 100 milliseconds (1/10 of a second). I have written a web application that reads several hundred records and returns them with acceptable response time, and I am no expert. To parse an XML file of many megabytes... you have already tried this, so you know how long it takes, right? If you haven't tried it then you should. It's possible to waste a lot of time considering alternatives -- the term is "analysis paralysis". Speculating on how fast something might be doesn't get you very far.

  • IMovie 6.0.3 for some reason crashes after it starts to play back?

Please help? I created a imovie and I am having difficulty playing it back. Everything loads okay and when I began to work on the project it cooperates for a few seconds then crash. Or it plays back for a few seconds, skips alot then crashes. Recently, I ran out of space on my hard drive and began backing up to a secondary external hard drive. Could this have an effect? Please help! Andy

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
This is the imovie 08 forum, you may get some answers here but are likely to get more over in the appropriate forum. My first advise would be to instal the 6.0.4 update.

  • Some SFX crashing Premiere Pro 5.5

I have some SFX libraries, which are .aif files, and for some reason importing them causes Premiere to lock up and I have to force quit it. Any idea why that might be happening? These are SFX I regularly used in FCP projects.
    Thanks!

Thanks man. I have a Mac Pro tower, dual 2 gHz dual-core processors (quad) with 10 gigs of RAM. It's a bit old, but it handles most of this stuff perfectly.
I don't see how I can attach a file to this message board, but the file (files) in question were .aif files, the finder calls them "AIFF-C audio." They play fine in quick look, quicktime, and FCP. On import, they either crash Premiere or lock it up so that I have to force it to quit anyway.
If there's a way to attach one I will, but hopefully that gives you enough info. Thanks for your help. I'm still getting over the transition from FCP, and loving CS5.5, so figuring out how to make little things like this go smoother is very helpful.

  • Some apps crash but others work - HD has been repaired

Hi, I had error that HD needed to be repaired when I ran disk check in disk utility. I inserted the start up disk and repaired the HD. I then ran another check in disk utility and HD was repaired. Unfortunately, I still have some apps that will not run such as iTunes and iPhoto. Other apps like Firefox and Word run just fine. When I click on iTunes or iPhoto it bounces a few times then nothing. I have looked at the console output and it says that the program has crashed. I then go to view the files in the crash reported but it is empty. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to repair this or do the programs need to be reinstalled. Thank you!

Hi messnerm001, and a warm welcome to the forums!
They may need replacing, fixing the HD may or may not fox files, it just repairs where the OS thinks the files are and such.
Try this first, Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Reboot.
If the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • Where can I find some funny iPhone cases?

Some examples are in this blog post. Are there even funnier ones? I am planning to give a few of these iPhone 4S cases to my male family members and close guy friends as practical jokes.

did you try (I'm sure you did...:-) googling it with those tags, go to YouTube, eBay, craigslist  and Amazon?  That's where I look for my Iphone 4 Cases.  There are also stores like Fommy, Cellphons.shop.net, Accessory Geeks - maybe a specialist from one of these places can either offer you a case or give you some advice as to where you might look.  Also, so you have a local flea market?  Have you tried all your local mall kiosks?  Just some things I was thinking of, I hope I at least helped in some way...

  • After fresh starting OS 10.6 some programs crashed

When i´m starting my IMAC running on OS 10.6 some programs like firefox or filemaker 9.X will not start or crashes. So i repaired the permissions and after a warm reboot these programs are working, until the next "cold" start.
The permission repair tool wrote 2 warnings:
the SUID -File "System /Library/CoreService/RemoteManagment/...../ARDAgent" was changed and will not repaired.
    So to for the following:
The SUID- Datei "System/Library/Private/Framework/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum was changed and will not repaired.
I think the cause of these effects are older software or drivers (like from my HP scanjet 4600), but its difficult to analyse which one is the destroyer of the permission.
No effect was to be seen after stoping some of non apple application startup services in the user account preference place.
Only the warm start after a permission repair helps but its not the way i´d like to work every time.

For Firefox, try tuning off all add-ons. If things get better, then add them back one at a time to try to identify the culprit(s). You also might try deleting bad and duplicate fonts using Fontbook.

Have you checked on the compatibility of your software in general. Go [here|http://snowleopard.wikidot.com> and [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3258].

I would not have expected a fix there.

I would imagine the restarts are what helps, not the permissions repairs. As KT indicates the permission warnings you have received are safety ignored.

  • Some random crashing problems in AE CS3...

So I've only had CS3 for about a month now (had 6.5 forever) and I'm having some stability problems. Using vista 64 but had the same problems in 32 bit vista (and windows 7 which I tried for about a week).
First it was crashing because of divx, I uninstalled divx.
Then it seemed that Cineform Neoscene was crashing it, they released an update and I reinstalled Neo scene with the update and that stopped crashing it. Now I get somewhat random crashes that just say App crash and I get a message pop up that says
    "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    Runtime Error!
    Program: C:\Program Files (x...
    R6025
    -pure vital function call"
What is this and how do I stop it from happening? It seemes to happen in Encore and Premiere aswell.
    I am running as administrator...
    Thanks.

Most of the footage is cineform files, converted using the latest version of neo scene. But its happened before I've even opened a project or imported any kind of files. Audio is PCM. Sometimes the error will come up and if I hit x instead of "close the program" it stays running just fine, other times it will close.
Adobe updater updated everything by itself, know it updated all the core programs, etc. (using Production Premium)
Every available vista update is installed including service pack 2. Latest nVidia drivers, etc. I ran spybot and antivirus software today.
All the OS were on the same system but the HDD was completely formatted inbetween installs.  Yes W7 RC was used.
    Core 2 Duo T9300
    4GB RAM
    nVidia 8600M
    1 internal 320GB HDD
    1 external esata 1TB HDD
Blu ray read + write drive
I have a feeling it could be something to do with Cineform but what and why?
    EDIT -
It just happened when I tried to open Encore and crashed before the program even started with this in the details:

  • Some sites crashing while browsing...

    Hello,
I have an urgent issue here!
In recent months while browsing on sites using my iPad1 WIFI it sometimes unexpectedly crashes and brings me right back to my homepage apps! I have tried many other browsers besides safari, but often the same is true! While this happens of those sites that I was logged-in I am logged out and loose everything that I was working on. Those sites that I was just browsing I loose them totally and cant get back to them no browser history will reveal the exact section of a website I was using at the time.
Can someone please give me some support to solve this issue ASAP!!!

    Hello,
    thank you for your support.
As to your solution, initially I thought about it as I did it a few months ago. But since you reminded me about that, I did it again! All worked well but yesterday and today its the same problem I am having. I have cross checked possible solutions deleted a few conflicting apps that some users indicated in forums. But now again facing the same situation. Do you think its an issue with one of the apps I am using? If so how can I locate such an app? Or do you have any other solution to this? Software is upto date as well!
Thank you very much for your support
