Some Gen 1 shuffle syncing questions
1. I want to plug my Gen 1 shuffle into someone else's Mac to charge it, but don't want to have it resync with their song list. Can I do this? What do I have to set?
2. In the user's guide for the Gen 1 shuffle, it describes a method for keeping the shuffle in the Source list when it isn't connected. This involves clicking on the Options button. In the current iTunes, there does not seem to be an options button. Is there any way to keep the shuffle in the Source list currently?
3. I am thinking of giving my shuffle to a friend. What steps will she need to go through to rename it and have it sync with her own music library?
I'd appreciate any help with these questions. Thanks!

To prevent iTunes from opening automatically when you connect iPod shuffle:
1 In iTunes, select iPod shuffle in the Source list and click the Options button.
2 Deselect “Open iTunes when this iPod is attached.”

10.7.4 OS 10.6.3 iTunes Broke 2nd Gen shuffle syncing
After the recent iTunes update to 10.6.3 I have experienced problems syncing my 2nd generation iPod Shuffle. I get an error message indicating a problem syncing, try again later or restore. I have restarted the computer, restored the software in the iPod Shuffle, and even downloaded iTunes. Multiple times.
Any advice on solving this problem now, or must I wait till the next version of iTunes and hope it fixes this problem?My 2nd gen shuffle still works fine with the lastest iTunes and latest Mac OS X. Did you only update iTunes when this problem started, or was it both iTunes and Mac OS X?
As a test, I woud disconnect all USB peripherals (except for standard keyboard and mouse if desktop Mac), and connect the shuffle to a direct USB port. There may be some odd USB device conflict.
Another test, to help narrow down possible causes, is to create a new user account, in System Preferences Users & Groups pane. Log out (don't use Fast User Switching) and log in to the new user account. Try using iTunes with the shuffle there, to see if it works better. If that helps, the cause is something in your current user account. If the problem is the same, the problem is something that affects the overall system or hardware.
I just noticed that your profile shows two Macs. Do they both have the same Mac OS X version and iTunes version, and does this problem occur with both Macs? -
My old desktop 4G will no longer turn on - hard drive fan runs loud & screen stays grey w/ unending time wheel. So now I can no longer access my itunes library & sync my 5G nano. Is there a way to sync my nano to a macbook pro I am now using - w/ out losing the music & playlists that are on the nano? If not - how can I download the playlists on my nano to another source, then if I have to reset the nano, I can go back and add the playlists from "said other source."
I have excatly the same problem with my wife's ipod nano (5th gen) and windows 8. Itunes crashes as soon as I want to add new content. However, with my iphone the sync works

I have a 3rd gen Nano (and two shuffles). Why when I attach the Shuffles will ITunes just fill it then to capacity (my library is much bigger than any of my IPods) but you can't do the same with the Nano unless ITunes makes a playlist?
Seems if it works with one type of Ipod it should work with all.

I have tried to reset shuffle and also uninstall/reinstall Itunes nothing has worked. at this point I'm not sure if it charging. I have tried on 2 different computers with the same results.
Can anyone help? Not sure what to do and it's becoming quite frustrating... Would like to avoid sending it in if I can as it is so inconvenient!! :)

2nd gen shuffle wouldn't sync - fixed it (for me)
With 2nd gen shuffle, changed computers, downloaded ITunes 9, created new playlists, got all ready... and shuffle won't sync. Would start syncing, then quit after trying a couple songs, then some kind of error - folder not found or something like that. Tried it over and over in different variations. Looked thru google and tried resetting ipod, uninstall/reinstalling itunes (couple times), uninstalled intunes 9 and used itunes 7 (which someone recommended), searched thru apple support and tried things - same problem. Noticed in Explorer that the Ipod wasn't being detected consistently - would show briefly, then disappear so figured there was some problem with the computer recognizing the device, even though IPOD was recognized in ITunes. Went to Apple discussions looking for "recognizing ipod" and found http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1369; which I had seen earlier, but blew it off as not relevant because ipod was recognized in ITunes.
For me, appears that I didn't have shuffle connected to a high-power USB port - just plugged it into first one I saw, which wasn't high-power; did change ports earlier, but didn't know I had high-power ones (or needed them) available in another part in the back of computer. Changed ports and it worked - synced up like it used to.
Hope this helps others - I spent 3 days researching internet, trying variety of different things and being PO'ed - and music-less.I think it was just that itunes was running- but can't disable that. I ended up just taking about 30 mins to delete each song individually from the shuffle. Hopfully it will work for the kiddo we are giving it too. Thanks for your suggestion!

i have tried everything that is recommended by apple to get my ipod shuffle 4th gen to sync with itunes or even show up on my computer does anyone have suggestions?

i have a 2nd gen shuffle. i had to get a new computer and downloaded V11. my itunes works but i CANNOT sync to my shuffle. any ideas????
The latest iTunes may hide the sidebar by default. To show the sidebar, from the iTunes menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
With the sidebar visible on the left side of the iTunes window, when you connect the shuffle, does it appear in the sidebar, under DEVICES?
Since this is a 2nd gen shuffle, are you using the original USB cable that came with the shuffle, with the mini-dock at the shuffle end? A USB cable that is for the 3rd or 4th gen shuffle will not work; the connector is different. -
How can I find an audiobook on my 4th gen shuffle? Can't find it even when I play in order. When I try to tick Sync audiobooks it asks if I want to continue to remove existing music befoer syncing and I don't want to do that. Can anyone help?
Did you already load the audiobook manually (by dragging it to the shuffle)? To confirm that the audiobook is on the shuffle...
Select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar. If the sidebar (along left side of window) is not visible, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
Click the small triangle to the left of the shuffle name (in the sidebar) to drop down its content list, indented below the shuffle. Click on Audiobooks there. To the right, your audiobook(s) should be listed.
NOTE: if you don't see Audiobooks on the content list, there are no audiobooks on the shuffle.
When you turn ON the shuffle, you are playing from the default All Songs list. Audiobooks (and podcasts) do not play from the All Songs list. You need to use VoiceOver to select the audiobook from the playlist menu. This document explains how to set up and use VoiceOver on your shuffle

My mom got a new computer. I installed Itunes and connected her 2nd gen Shuffle which previously had been administrated by her niece's computer. I deleted all music,restored to factory settings, bought new music but am unable to get music on her shuffle. Her shuffle appears in Itunes sidebar and in computer. Says it is syncing but no music is on Shuffle. Light blinks green and orange, green, orange. Troubleshoot says "current user not administrator". I followed steps in relevant topics but still no music on Shuffle. HELP

Have a 4th gen shuffle, I cannot "sync" it. When I installed Itunes it never gave me the option to "sync" it or recognize my Ipod. I have spent hours on this, I have un installed, re installed, rebooted computer, changed ports, you name it and nothing. Please HELP.
Thank you..If you connected it to both your computer's USB port and a USB power adapter on a wall outlet, I think you've ruled out a problem with the power source. Since you at least get the red light, the USB docking cable is probably OK.
So, if it's not the USB port or the docking cable, the cause is likely to be on the shuffle. It may be the battery or a problem on the logic board. If it was just the battery, I think it would still appear in iTunes on the computer (or at least be recognized by the system).
(If this shuffle is less than one year from purchase date, it is under warranty.) -
Frist Gen Shuffle no longer recognized.
I had a original iPod shuffle that i used for years. I misplaced it and recently found it again.
It worked fine when I last used it. iTunes does not see the shuffle. It does not show up in the system profiler under any OS and I've tried 4 different Macs. And it also does not show up as a flash drive. I thought that at the very least it should show up as a USB flash drive with a dead battery
So my question is: when the battery dies does this iPod shuffle cease working altogether?
I have no way to trouble shoot it if I can't get any computer to recofgnize it. If what I am experiencing is a known issue because of a bad battery then I would be fine replacing it with a new battery HOWEVER if it has a dead logic board (which would be weird since it worked when I misplaced it and it hadn't been distiurbed until I found it again) then i don't want to waste the money and time trying to repair it.A few years ago, I bought some broken 1st gen shuffles on eBay, because I wanted to see if I could swap parts and get a few working shuffles. It worked, but I found that most of those broken 1st gen shuffles were broken because the built-in USB plug was faulty. So that is the most common failure, and the symptom is exactly what you describe. No connection. No light on shuffle. Not recognized by computer in any way. That may be why Apple changed the design for the 2nd gen shuffle.
If you have tried four Macs, I think you have ruled out a problem with the USB port. On one of the Macs, try disconnecting all USB devices (except standard keyboard/mouse if normally used). Do this to reset the shuffle

Two 1st gen shuffles; one comp
ok here's my problem; i have a first gen ipod shuffle.(the long skinny white one) it works fine had it for 2 months. i bought my son the same 1st gen shuffle for xmas. I went to install the cd; it removed the 1st installation from when i installed my shuffle. so i reinstalled. it won't recognize the second shuffle (my son's) AT ALL. i restored it using the restore utility download; no help. the new shuffle is still plugged in orange light. doesnt show up in itunes or on my computer.
also when i registered the new shuffle the serial code wasnt accepted, so i had to use the MP code on the box, then it shows me the serial number, which is the exact number i entered.
my question is: can you run two shuffles on one computer, on one itunes, and just have the program recognize the two different shuffles? how? PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!For running Multiple iPods please look to this article.

As For trying to install the CD to the Shuffle, Make sure that you are running the latest version of Itunes.
1. Click Help in iTunes
2. Click About Itunes
The Version number will be the first thing you see scrolling up the page. if you are not Running 7.0.2 then Download latest software and try to sync ipod once again.

I have iTunes 7.0.2 and Mac OS X 10.4.8. My (1st-gen) shuffle is recognized and syncs older or non-DRM songs just fine, but won't sync some newer songs purchased through the iTunes Music Store. I get a message telling my to perform an update from the Summary tab.
Unfortunately, the Update and Restore buttons on the summary tab are disabled, so I can't use them. Nor can I use the iPod Updater 2.0.1 -- it never recognizes the iPod. The iPod Updater 2006-06-28 *does* recognize the iPod, but fails to recognize a software version. Likewise, the summary tab in iTunes says "n/a" for both Software Version and Serial Number. (I've tried "updating" using the 06-28 version; it tries, but gives me an error.)
How can I update this thing? I'd like to have my newer music on my iPod.I downloaded and tried the Shuffle Reset Utility, but it couldn't restore the shuffle. I received an error message saying "No Firmware."
However, I went to my wife's Windows computer, downloaded the Shuffle reset utility, and it worked fine, there. In fact, the Shuffle worked flawlessly with Windows (I was able to sync it with my wife's iTunes library, etc).
I thought -- great, back in business! However, when I returned to the Mac and tried to sync with my own music library, I have the same problems; the Shuffle's version, serial number, et cetera isn't recognized, I can't sync newer songs, et cetera.
Obviously, the Shuffle isn't the problem. Also, the Shuffle worked fine with my Mac before the latest iTunes update; I'm beginning to think it's a Mac software issue with the update. The other possibility is a connection issue, but I've tried all the direct USB ports on the computer, and also a powered hub (also, the fact that the Shuffle worked fine, before, makes me think that the connection probably isn't the issue).
