After using every version of Windows since Windows 1.0 on my original Compaq, I tried Windows 8 but reverted to Windows 7 for a number of reasons, including the confusion of having two systems relatively unintegrated working at times at what seemed to be
cross-purposes. Remembering fondly the beginning of modern Windows with the gradual elimination of interrupts provides me with continuing pleasure today. It is also one of the many things that keeps me with Windows, since development of a huge ecosystem for
active competition provides a great contrast to Apple's closed system.
I have some suspicions that some of the open system is coming apart in some ways, but am delighted that Windows 10 is coming as a possible change in phones. It would be a boon to me to be able to load Windows 10 phone as a usable operating system with my
Android phone.
With this said, there are still a number of integration issues in the latest preview. I am largely reserving my views about the new Start menu until I have used it more. But what remains unnecessarily dysfunctional is the separation of various settings that
cannot be found in one place, most noticeably the apparent separation of the Update system from the Control Panel. In addition, there is little reason to have two separate system settings as far as I am concerned.
Perhaps this is the idea behind having "Settings" now sitting at the top of the newest Start menu, which appears to have most if not all of the Control Panel functions but also seems too hidden and mysterious for my taste. I have not

T430s - general observations and USB 3.0 issue
I got my T430s this week after a month. After unpacking I noticed some fingerprints on the lid and also on the display. So I assume the model was reworked, because from the regular manufacturing process I don't expect any fingerprints. However, it runs and did not yet bluescreen. Or perhaps the fingerprints are from wrapping or QA, who knows.
It did not have the current BIOS 2.02. I didn't note down which version it had, but it was 1.13 or perhaps even 1.11. Is there an update history somehere? I really don't remember. But I don't think this indicates an old board. I can imagine that new BIOS versions are not immediately put into production. They might always wait some months to see if any compatibility problems arise.

Some general remarks:
o the lid: when the lid is closed, my laptop has an oval gap in the middle between the lid and the base. it's perhaps 2-3mm wide. But I found pictures in internet that show the same, so I think it's intentionally. I remember mark_lenovo (?) stating in another thread it's for providing some resistance against pressure. And in fact, I can close the gap by putting some light pressure on the lid. I remember my old T81p got scratches on the screen when the keyboard rubbed against the screen during transportation. Perhaps they want to avoid something like this to happen.
o the keyboard: I really like it, the chiclet keys are a pleasure to press down, but they should have switched CTRL and FN. I'm constantly hitting FN instead of CTRL.
o the touch pad: I don't like the bumpy surface. The finger doesn't glide very well. I prefer the smooth pad of my latitude.
o I made a clean install, so I don't have any of that preinstalled bloatware. I did not install any of the ThinkVantage tools except for system update, and even that proved almost useless, because it only downloads packages, but fails to install them. There's just a notification that installation failed. I could install all packages manually though. So I only use that thing as a downloader. But why all manufacturers give their packages names like g7uj04us.exe? Is it so difficult to use the name that says what it is and what version?
o switching between Optimus and HD 4000 works like a charm
o the laptop is very quiet, but I did not really put it under heavy load yet.
o USB 3.0: I have an external USB 3.0 case (fantec), which works on all ports, but after installing the USB 3.0 drivers it refused working on the USB 3.0 port. It still works on the 2.0 port, but the info bubble even says this is an USB 3.0 device and would work faster on an USB 3.0 port. The USB 3.0 port still works with 2.0 devices. So either the fantec case or the drivers are crap.
And I really would like to have one USB port on the right side. When I sit in my chair, I place the laptop on my laps and then the plug in the back is always in the way or pressing against my leg. Not good, it could break.

i am facing problem zooming and in slide as i think there is some general setting got changed help to rectify.
If the screen appears zoomed in then try double-tapping the screen with 3 fingers (with zoom 'on' you need to use 3 fingers to drag around the screen), and then go into Settings > General > Accessibility and turn Zoom 'off', and possibly also change what Triple-Click Home is set to.

I need some detail solutions and suggests about below these problems:
Problem 1: SAP Management Console cannot start successfully
Problem 1.1: Click on SAP Management Console, but yellow light continues for a long period of time.
Problem 1.2: In DOS, startsap command cannot start SAP R/3.
Problem 1.3: Oracle 9i database automatically shutdown by itself.
Problem 1.4: There is very low disk storage left (say less than 50MB) in the hard disk where Oracle 9i database is installed in the server.
Problem 2: Problems in User Maintenance and Security of the SAP R/3 System
Problem 2.1: Super user account password was lost (e.g. SAP* password was lost)
Problem 2.2: Super users DDIC and SAP* were dropped in table usr02 in Oracle.
Problem 2.3: Some users have been locked or deleted by an ABAP programmer who has been granted with almost superuser profiles. Use the following steps to place your device into recovery mode. If the device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
Did you do this?
Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone or iPod touch, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the the iPhone or iPod touch to turn off.
If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to iPhone. When you reconnect the USB cable to iPhone, the device should power on.
Note: If you see the screen pictured below, let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure the battery has some charge and then start with step 2 again.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
Use iTunes to restore the device.
If none of these works, visit your nearest Apple Retail Store, Apple Authorized Service Provider or wireless carrier.

Suggestions, Observations and problem with Time Capsule shares
*Some Observations*
The Time Capsule can take a long time to become active. This is especially true if using an extended or WDS network. I would suspect this is due to the negotiation between devices that it needs to do. I have on occasion believed it to be hung, only to find that after walking away for a bit it comes up. This also impacts devices showing up in the Airport utility.
Using a time capsule with one Airport Express B/G will work, but adding a second creates problems.
Extending a network with an Airport Express N seems to work well.
Best bet is to set up separate B/G and N networks and run your N network as N only at 5Ghz.
WEP provides no real security, so think of it as you would an open network.
*My Issue*
I am having an issue where the time capsule shares become unavailable. It is an intermittent issue, and I have been unable to identify a test case. This happens for devices connected over ethernet as well as wireless. The Time Capsule shows in the Finder list, but the volumes are not available. Connecting to them fails.
The device also appears in the Airport Utility list, but when clicking on Manual Setup, or guided set up, it causes a hang.
This results in Time Machine hanging when trying to initiate a backup.
I have also noticed that when this happens, the signal does start to get a bit flaky with "Roam (Beacons Lost)" messages. Wireless connectivity still seems to be very useable though. I can connect to other network shares through the Time Machine, but not to the shares on the Time Machine. The only way to recover from this is to power cycle the Time Capsule.
One thing I want to investigate more tonight is whether there are any issues with my keychain and old passwords in case there are multiple failed attempts in the mix that are doing something. Although I know of no lockout feature on the device.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. This is the second Time Machine, so I have seen this on two different devices. I am also seeing this issue across 4 different computers simultaneously, some via ethernet and some wirelessly. Time Capsule is 7.3.2Hi,
I have pretty much the same problem, 1TB Time Capsule that works fine most of the time as a wireless router. Up till recently Time Machine backups just worked (as one would expect them to) wired and wireless. I went away for a week came back and now every time Time Machine invokes a back up process all of a sudden my wireless network goes down, Time Machine can no longer see the Time Capsule and all other devices (iphone / apple TV other non apple devices) no longer have connections (they see wireless but no pass through to the internet or each other).
I have tried resetting all sorts of stuff, re-deployed my network, changed IP / LAN settings to make it less complex, Yasu'd my mac, connected only via wires, cleaned out my keychain etc etc and still get the same problems and as per Chris's point airport utility also hangs and the only solution is rebooting the time capsule.
I am fairly frustrated with this! any suggestions / help would be gratefully accepted.

I have this luck of having a chief who knows quite a sleek stuffs in photoshop and image rendering techniques and that includes gif images.
Integrators love gifs: light, minimal use of colors.. when they’res no curves in any way, but what about transparency ?
There are possibilities to avoid the use of pngs, which are usually heavier and take quite some time to load. Sometimes when gifs are being exported, codes or designers forget the background image on which the gif will be laid onto. That is why anti-aliasing techniques are very important for keeping the design intact.
use overflow: hidden instead of clear:both

use divs instead of tables for layouts
firefox has a great plugin called HTML Validator (http://users.skynet.be/mgueury/mozilla/). you don't have to keep going to the w3c website to validate. when viewing your page within firefox it will validate it and tell you any errors and warnings. saves me a lot of time. it's also great if you're development environment is behind a firewall - you won't have to view source, copy & paste onto w3c validator. they don't have support for html5 yet
this could be more of style and preference but i use multiple files of css. usually 2 or 3. one is for the layout (layout.css), one is for forms (form.css) and one for display data. anything more can become more work when it's time to make any changes, especially with multiple people working on the same project
create a standard workflow. naming conventions for file names, class names, etc.
i'm not sure you can get away from those IE specific css. i've tried a campaign at work to not support IE so that we become fully compliant with the web but unfortunately, IE still has a lot of users. what we've done is support IE but the latest versions only. M$ is at least getting better with being compatible.
view the page in firefox and IE. if they work, then you should be fine with the other browsers. as a developer, it's my responsibility to ensure that any user whether mac or pc can view the website - as long as they are running the "latest" version of the browser. latest as in what the software developer still supports.

I have a project where I need a java application to talk to some test equipment via the serial port. I have studied the java comm api and played around with the SerialDemo example which I used to model my code.
I have a SeialConnection class which is very similar to the example except I made it to extend Observable and I have it notify observers when data is detected on the serial port.
I created a second class which extends Obserable which communicates with the SerialConnection and implemented the observer interface. This class process the incomming and outgoing data and provides some higher level methods, like getSerialNumber(), for my application to use. The application frame is an Observer of this class so the GUI can show the status as well.
An example method from this class:

This works great when the test equipment sends a message or when the user selects a command from the program interface. My problem is when I try to send a command to the serial port from within the update method of the observer. There are instances where a result from the serial port needs to initiate another request for information.

When I make a request for additional information from the serial port within the update method I get nothing returned and the requested data arrives later after the update method has completed.
I do not know the fine details of how the javax.comm or observer/obserable works but it appears to me that my strategy can only process one command at a time.
Can anyone think of a way to allow the application's frame update method to request information and wait for the data to be ready?
Does anybody have an example of how to do this type of communications?

DougI have not received any suggestions yet on an alternate method for this problem, but I have come up with a solution I think will work. I am posting it here so others who have the same problem can at least see what path I followed...
The basic problem seems to be that I am trying to have my observer ask for information that requires the same observer / observable thread to respond.. duh! :) To requst additional information from the serial port I need to move the requests out of the update() method to a different thread.
I implemented the SerialWorker class to make the request so the observer update() method could return normally without waiting for the result of the new request.

I run firefox on a window7 machine. I uninstalled couponamazing, verizon, and a few other programs. Then I updated flash and google chrome. I never used google chrome before. Upon going into firefox my gmail and facebook pages were not formatted correctly (all b+W with open boxes, no icons). I then uninstalled google chrome. I read some help questions and cleared my cash, removed history, and reset firefox. Still have the same problems with gmail and FB.

Quick advice needed on Observer and Observable...
Ok at the moment i have about 10 sorting algorithms in 10 classes. They all extend another class which includes methods like print, randomise, user input etc etc which all sorting classes use. So basically my sorting classes only sort and nothing more is done in those classes.
Now what i want to do is have some statistics on a GUI. This will include copy coperations, compare operations and total operations. I will obviously need to input where these operations occur for each sorting class. I want the GUI to be updated each time an operation happens. All my sorts run in a thread, i did this so i can choose the speed of the sort with a JSlider.
My question is, will i need to be using the Observer and Observable interface? If so, can i have some advice into how i would structure this. If not, then how else can i do a statistics class. I tried a way without this approach, but it didn't seem too OO friendly. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.I'm not a GUI guy and this is definitely not the best way to do it - but you could probably call an update method after each calculation or whatever. Make a static method that has a reference to your GUI form.
This is definitely not an elegant solution - but I think it's explicit and readable, and that can be more valuable than elegance. -
Hi, I've checked how to use Kannada keyboard in Yosemite. But, there are some 'vattu forms' and other grammar in Kannada language that I don't know how to use it. I know how to change between the keyboards and can also view keyboard. However, For eg, 'Preetiya taatanige nimma muddu mommagalu maduva namaskara' How to write this? If anybody can answer this, very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your reply.In general, you need to use the "f" (kannada qwerty keyboard) or "d" key (kannada) between letters to make special forms. Also you may need to adjust the typography settings of the font, which is done by doing Format > Font > Show Fonts > Gear Wheel > Typography as shown below. Tracy, first you should restart the iPhone by holding down the on/off and the home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo. This process could solve some of your problems. Also make sure you have the latest update, go into our settings>general>software update. On the wifi issue try restarting your router, if you are still having problems try resetting your network settings, go into your settings>general>reset then tap reset network settings.
The battery issues seems normal, the battery will not last 24 hours. -
"General Error" and "Out of Memory" for only certain files?
I have Final Cut Express 4 on Mac OS X Leopard and it has been working fine, up until now.
For some reason, when I try to view two clips in the tab to the left of the screen to find sections of them to put into my project, I get a message that says, "General Error" and when I click okay it says, "Error: Out of Memory". They are both mp4 files, and are 242.9 MB and 294.2 MB, and I have viewed them both on Quicktime. I don't understand why it is saying that it is out of memory when I still have 7 GB left on my computer and it still lets me view and add other files into my sequence.
Can someone help me out and tell me how to fix this? I'd really appreciate advise!MPEG-4 is not a format that works in FCE. You'll have to convert it to one of FCE's format. Without knowing details about what the original format is it's impossible to say what you should convert it to.

On Placing Text - General Feedback and Experience Request
Hi everyone.
Recently I completed a Kindle book made through InDesign, containing some 130 images and over 40,000 words. When I typed the book, I did so using MS Word largely because I wanted automatic management of citations, which I did using a Zotero plugin. The writing process was as good as any writing process could ever be, but once I began placing the text (as a Word document) into InDesign, I quickly experienced the "love-hate" relationship described by David Blatner in one of his courses.
I suffered a tremendous amount of trouble when placing the Word docs into InDesign. After I completed the book and placed it into InDesign, and then formatted it properly for ePub, the Table of Contents would not generate. Each time I attempted to generate the TOC, InDesign crashed. Eventually I grew tired of that experience so I pasted all of the Word text into Notepad++, saved a new file as a plain text file, and then copied and pasted the plain text into InDesign and then manually reformatted the entire book, replacing each individual image.
The result of my labor was an InDesign book with clean code that exported to ePub without any trouble at all. So I'm very happy that I was able to complete the project.
Now, I need to do it again, so I wanted to ask for your general feedback on your experience of placing text into InDesign.
Is there a special way you have developed to keep everything as clean as possible to reduce the chances of unexpected problems from occuring?
I can write a book using Apache Open Office as easily as I can Word. If I use Apache Open Office and save the book to RTF and place it, would I get a cleaner InDesign file than if I saved and placed the RTF using Word?
I'm just seeking general feedback that may help ease my future workload.
ThanksWe often get word files to be "converted" to Indesign (now CC for us but in Windows). We have a macro running which converts lots of styles to char styles (italic, bold ...) before importing.
We have a template made in CC and afterwards exported it as rtf. We saved that rft as a word-template. This template works fine, but many of the "special feature" of Word cause problems, mainly because either ID doesn't recognize the code, or ID makes something else for it. Clearing this isn't simple, if it's a short story, we convert all the text to a basic para style (no grep styles, no nested styles), getting rid of all the "overrides", and start by manually reformatting.
My advice: if you start from scratch, use ID from the start, maybe some "things" will be more difficult, but as you put it, if you have to start all over again, it didn't help a lot typing the text in "word" first. -

Second, you will have to set the color of each grid alternatively to black and white.
After you have done this, your chess bord is ready.

You will have to implement a MouseListener and implelemnt the method mouseClicked(MouseEvent e) attached to the container.
So when you use the methods getX() and getY() based on the MouseEvent e...
