Some general ?'s re: urxvt, copy/paste, etc.

I started using urxvt, and I just checked the manpage and what I believe is the section on keybindings was quite confusing for me. I am used to gnome-terminal's ctrl+alt+c/v for copy/paste, and just want to double check a few things.
1. In urxvt, highlight with either left/right mouse and which kb button/shortcut will copy? And what is the paste command in urxvt (above gnome-terminal combo doesn't work I just realized).
2. Doing it this way, I can only paste with middle mouse button, ctrl+v in FF for example doesn't paste it, and I am confused about why?
3. Can someone give me a fairly basic command/rundown for configuring/viewing keybindings in urxvt? I have checked the manpage like I said and it was a bit baffling.
Thanks folks I really want to learn it, appreciate any help to get me in the right direction with some basics

colbert wrote:Is it just separate clipboards and that's how it is?
Yes. As a matter of fact, clipboard managers such as Glipper allow for collection of copied items based on whether the items come from the Primary selection (highlight & middleclick) or the Clipboard (CTL+C & CTL+V, etc.).
See my post here:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 26#p279226
(especially the link at the bottom) for more detailed info about the copy and paste implementation in X11.
By the way, I recently began using rxvt-unicode, and two things that I find require some adjustment are the use of the Primary selection for copy / paste (without the option for using the Clipboard) and no drag and drop support.
Because of urxvt's use of the Primary clipboard, I had to enable that feature in Glipper (which I normally have disabled), and it certainly leads to a lot of junk filling up Glipper's copy / paste list. Every time you highlight something whether you intended to copy and paste it or not, the item ends up in the list making it more difficult to cull out the items you really intended to re-use for copy & paste operations.
I guess everything has its pros and cons, and I'm still on the fence about whether the pros of urxvt outweigh the cons. I'm leaning towards keeping it for now.

  • KDE4: Konqueror: No copy, paste, etc?

Edit: .. what in the hell is going on? It seemed to be fixed for some bizarre reason after installing konq-plugins.. Then randomly goes away again. Then comes back again. Removing konq-plugins doesn't reproduce it back to it's original no-cut-or-paste state.
    Hey guys,
This is probably a simple problem, but for the life of me I can't figure it out. I have just about no hair left on my head from switching over to this (again..).
Simply, the copy/paste/etc functions are greyed out on -anything- in konqueror. Everything. However, it has a menu "Copy to.." that appears to work fine..
Btw, they appear to work fine in dolphin, but I very much dislike dolphin.
    Wtf?
    Ideas?

I would suggest filing a bug report - if you haven't done so already - or reinstalling kdebase.  They seem to work fine on my PC.
Out of curiosity, what's so bad about Dolphin?  It's developed by the same people who develop Konqueror, and has the option of opening multiple, Konqueror-style tabs and splitting the current view (but only into 2 windows - which is all most people need).  Beginning with 4.2, Ark's service menus will also be included, so people will be able to easily (un)archive/copy/cut/move/delete/etc. files.
    * I do not use split view on anything, because for me it's extremely counterproductive to have half as much space to see what I'm doing and where I'm going than just open the two destinations in separate tabs/windows and mess with more scrolling and go around my mental map of the folder layout. The way I am, it actually takes more time, not less, to use.
    * It is no where remotely close to as configurable as konqueror
    * I can't get the layout to be like I've used for years. Kind of close, but no cigar:
There is no apparent way to put a location bar (which I want to be the usual editable kind as opposed to only editable when you click next to it -- -always-.) into the same bar as the back/fwd etc. I can only have a separate, space-wasting navigation bar. I don't see 'location' anywhere in the toolbar options, or a way to get rid of the navigation bar. I need to do both. I dont see a point in wasting so much space to the right of both the main icons and the location bar when you could combine them.
    * I don't understand the point of yet another file browser when konqueror beats it hands down and is essentially loaded into the system whether or not it's used on my setup.
    * Dolphin is not a web browser, which I used konqueror for occasionally.
    * I don't think most of my service menus work with it. Though this I have not determined for sure, because of the above.
I could probably think of more, but these are the most obvious reasons. I just don't like it. It feels like a nerfed nautilus to me.
.... but in other news, Dolphin solved a bug I was having in konqueror somehow that I was about to post. Basically, the icons were huge. When I would resize them and their previews in the config utility, it would work, but then reset itself upon re-launching konqueror.  I used the identical utility in dolphin to change its icon sizes, and magically they are working correctly in konqueror now on every launch. Weird. Maybe loading dolphin to check whether copy/paste works there also fixed copy/paste in konq somehow, as it just did with these icons, and installing konq-plugins was just a coincidence at the same time. Within these few minutes that the icons did not save size settings, I have done nothing but play with dolphin and install konq-plugins. Very bizarre.
Kde4 is so buggy.. =/ I'd post bug reports on these things, but it doesn't do much good when I can't reproduce the problem or have certainty about what solved the issue in the first place.

  • Urxvt , copy/paste from openbox

    Did my homework and found
    select -> copy
    middle -> paste,
but it seems like urxvt have its own clipboard and openbox have another, I can't copy something from urxvt and paste it to firefox. Is there a fix for this?

The middle mouse click will also paste highlighted text from urxvt into Firefox.  Also, mouse-highlighted text in Firefox or other apps may be pasted into urxvt with a middle-click or a Shift-Insert.
Look up "Clipboard" in the wiki.  You'll find some suggestions for apps to synchronize X's cutbuffer and the clipboard.

  • Copy/Paste etc.

Hi. One thing I miss from my blackberry (other than my favorite Brick game!!) is the ability to cut and paste etc. Is there a way to do this on the iphone? Is there an iphone book that is any good? Thanks. Tommy

No there is not a copy and paste function on the iphone.
If you would like to leave feedback about the iphone, this link might help.

  • Numbers: Copy/Paste from multiple tables into 1 single Table?

I would appreciate some guidance in creating a copy/paste script from multiple numbers tables into a different single table within the same numbers document.
The columns in the source table are in different positions to the destination table.
So for example, i would want to copy…
    Sheet 1, Table 1 Cell A3  copy to Sheet 2 Table Z Cell B2
    Sheet 1, Table 1 Cell B3  copy to Sheet 2 Table Z Cell C2
    Sheet 1, Table 1 Cell C3  copy to Sheet 2 Table Z Cell E2
    Sheet 1, Table 1 Cell D3  copy to Sheet 2 Table Z Cell F2
    Sheet 1, Table 1 Cell E3  copy to Sheet 2 Table Z Cell G2
    Sheet 1, Table 1 Cell G3  copy to Sheet 2 Table Z Cell I2
    Sheet 1, Table 1 Cell J3  copy to Sheet 2 Table Z Cell H2
and repeat the copy/paste on subsequent rows of each table until there is an empty row in Sheet 1 Table 1 (or if this is difficult, say set the repeat to a max of 30 rows).
The script would then need to move on to Sheet 1 Table 2, and do the same copying to Sheet 2 Table Z (from where the previous copy/paste finished in Table Z).
Repeat process would finalise with Sheet 1 Table 6.
The Paste part would need to be pasting values, as the cells in the source tables do contain some formulas.
At the moment this is all done manually and does take some to to undertake.
If anyone can help, i would be very grateful.
    Thanks,
    Colin

    Interceptor,
are you trying to aggregate data from severl tables into a single table?  If so you whould be able to do this without a script.  The function indirect() will allow you to construct the proper formula, which you may fill over (in the same row) to the appropriate cells, then fill down.
    Here is a small example:
There are three data tables ("Table 1", "Table 2", and "Table 3").  And a summary "Table Z"
In table Z make the first row a header (as shown):
Use column A to enter the Sheet name and colomn B to enter the table name.
In row 1 (the header), enter the cells you want to get
in cell C2 type (or copy and paste from here) the formula:
    =INDIRECT($A2&"::"&$B2&"::"&C$1)
now select cell C2, copy now select cell C2 thru H2, paste
now select the cells C2 thu H2, hover the corsor over the bottom edge of the selection, and drag the yellow cirlc down as needed to fill the formula down.
Update the sheet and table names as needed for each row

  • [SOLVED] Custom Copy & Paste Keyboard Shortcuts in Gnome3

I'm looking for a way to make custom keyboard shortcuts in for the copy and paste functions. Specifically, I want F1 to be Copy. F2 to be Paste.
(In the future, I'd love to be able to do more, like Find, Cut, adding in frequently used text phrases via one keyboard combo ... in ANY application.)
Why? Because I use a different keyboard layout, Dvorak. I'm sure other layouts have similar problems. The Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V are all of a sudden two handed operations. Slows me down. I need a non-mouse (I'm aware of the middle-click option), one handed operation solution.
There's a solution I found for Windows, AutoHotkey. Lets me do this. No Linux alternative as far as I was able to find. The options in the System Settings for Keyboard shortcuts do not include the Copy, Paste, etc functions. I also tried xclip. Works for copy. Just not paste. I can't get it to paste into any X app. I've used every variation of xclip -o I could. It appears that xclip isn't made for this. Nor do any of the other clipboard-like packages appear to be for it either.
    Any suggestions?

    Found a solution!
    xdotool
Nothing else needed. I just set up custom keyboard shortcuts in the Gnome3 system settings that utilize this command. "xdotool key ctrl+v" will paste. I have that set to F2. "xdotool key ctrl+c" set to F1.
It can type preset text as well, which I use a lot at work (not so much at home). " xdotool type "Hello world!" "

  • How to observe Copy&Paste ?( not just AddToHierarchy)

    Hello!
I need to observe Copy&Paste event.
The approach with Doc Observer attached ( protocol IID_IHIERARCHY_DOCUMENT) gives me ability to catch
    theChange = kNewPageItemCmdBoss and AddToHierarchyCmdBoss.
My problem is that this events occur also on another use cases then Copy&Paste ( for example - just create Frame).
But i need to perform some custom action ONLY if Copy&Paste ( of Frames) occur.
    ( actually, i need Paste event )
How can i do this ?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

No, there isn't any way to hook these events.
And even if you could, would it be for ALL copy/paste operations, only for some, for certainly data types?   I would recommend that you look at simply hooking the standard OS clipboard/scrap operations.

  • The mouse right-click (to copy-paste) menu does not work correctly.

The mouse right-click copy-paste menu often fails in Firefox 4. If I highlight something to copy and then use the mouse to right-click on it, the menu will appear down and to the right. Second, the highlighted command (i.e. copy, paste, etc) will be two steps beneath the mouse pointer. Third, if one chooses "copy" for example, your highlighted text might or might not (usually Not) be copied. This works as expected (perfectly) on this Firefox site, but fails on all other web pages. Note: This is a "company computer" where I am not an administrator.

I am the admin on my PC, and I am not able to select the copy page after I have highlighted an area. I can if a link select copy link, but in short no more copy paste feature on this new Firefox.

  • [SOLVED] urxvt awkward copy paste behavior

Ok i have set up the copy/paste method for urxvt found here - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Rx … _and_Paste
I installed the script from the AUR - http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=35526

but for some reason i still can not copy out of urxvt and into another application (e.g. firefox, pidgin, etc)

  • How can I access copy and paste history in iphone 4, absent some app, if I have copied another block of text before pasting the first?

Is there ANY way to access the copy/paste history in iphone4 without an app? I have the latest verdsion of ios, and I'm using an iPhone 4... The issue arose when I copied a large, VERY large block of text, and then another before I pasted the huge one that took forever to hammer out and was unsaved by any other method, and now I really need it all back!!! Please help! Is there no "clipboard" or similar tool that remembers copied text history for a while, or am I SOL on this one? I can tell you this, as important as the lost words are to me, I don't think I could summon the energy or creativity to repeat it, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and possibly rewarded with cupcakes and affectionate (albeit digital) hugs. Thanks in advance!

I'm currently using Linux Fedora system.
Doesn't matter. There's no standard way for D&D on Linux, no single API.
Every application has its own mechanism which may or may not be compatible with any other.
Gnome and KDE groups are doing some work to provide a common standard but as you know the Linux zealots are completely opposed to anyone telling them what to do (such as creating standards) and won't in general follow them.

Your line breaks will most likely be incorrect if you don't turn on the Japanese Composer.
It is almost absolutely impossible to accomplish your goal without having a font - any font - installed on your system that has that glyph. However, if it's showing up in Word, than means that you must have that glyph installed, right? What font are you trying to use in InDesign? You might already know that Word will auto-substitute fonts when it encounters a missing glyph, so we really don't know what font is being used to render that one glyph. The whole sentence might be in MS Mincho but one glyph might be pulled from another font if MS Mincho doesn't have that glyph.
That being said, you're going to break it if you don't know how to set Japanese type in ID. It's not something where you can just copy text out of email and paste into your English layout.

  • How do you keep strokes, etc, from changing when copying & pasting?

I am sure there is a simple solution to this problem, but I cannot figure it out and could use some help.  I have a graphic in one InDesign document (ID CS4 - using Windows XP Pro) and when I try to copy and paste it into another ID doc, it completely changes the strokes and fills.  It usually does the opposite of what is in the graphic (this happens with every graphic I try this with).  So if I have a circle that is stroke only, when I copy and paste it, it comes in with no stroke and a fill.  I have to use these graphics between documents frequently and some of them are complicated, making it difficult to spend the time correcting this problem.  When I tried adding the graphic to a library, it did the same thing.  It also changed it when I moved one page to another document.  Anyone have any ideas why this might be happening and how to make it stop?
    Thanks,
    GS

Thanks for the reply.  While it wasn't the preferences, I did find a link on the link you included in your answer that led me to the solution.
The problem was conflicting object styles.  The solution was to load the object style from the doc that included the graphic into the doc that I wanted to place the graphic in.  Then when I copy & paste, the graphic comes in perfectly.  The only problem is if there are other graphics in that doc, but now that I know there is an issue with object styles, I can pay attention to it as I design.
I can always count on the forum for great answers!

  • I am trying to Copy paste some content from PDF reader with no success

    Hi,
I am new here, hope I will find the answer to my prob.
I am currently working on an Ebook I plan publishing, discussing affiliate marketing.
I am using some resources from other Ebooks I purchased and have in hand.
    * While I am trying to copy paste some content, it does copy, but when trying to place it in a notepad file, the content is being copied as gibberish. (signs and spaces).
I've tried using microsoft word, then i totally gets out of contrast.
    Did anyone experience something alike?
    Thank you.
    Mia.

This is common. In this case it may be done to protect the copyright
content of the ebook from reuse. Since the amount you can use under
fair use is only a few sentences, it shouldn't take too long to
    retype...

  • Urxvt non-latin copy-paste

    Hello.
I've used tutorial from Archlinux wiki to get easy copy (ctrl+c) and paste (ctrl+v) in urxvt. The problem now is that urxvt can't paste non-latin characters correctly.
For example, I need to paste this to terminal:
    Région parisienne
Guake terminal can render the above text correctly, while urxvt displays
    Région parisienne
The same error also happens with Japanese characters, although I can type directly Japanese to urxvt using ibus-anthy.
The copy-paste extension uses a perl plugin shipped with standard urxvt installation.

    @Ranmaru;
already have it xD. I can't use middle click, no mouse and my touchpad's buttons are a bit off.
