Some good advice needed please!

Hi
We are planning to develop an application that offers a web service on the Internet and since we are more familiar with J2SE than J2EE we were thinking about using
javax.jws.WebService and javax.jws.WebMethod in a good old Desktop application. To handle possible high traffic we are planning to use java.util.concurrent.ThreadPoolExecutor.
Our question is ... Assuming adequate hardware and bandwith, will this approach do the job well or are there any pitfalls that we should be aware of?
Many thanks in anticipation.

I posted to your other thread some suggestions for Network connections.
Specific to your question here, the more relevant information entered in the Network panel, the more specific the Network connection. Otherwise, default values set the system to "automatic" which means time can be potentially wasted searching for a Network connection, and hence, the lag-time. The DHCP client ID box adds more specific information for Safari to access, thereby increasing speed. I'm guessing here, but since you still have an E-mail account with Cox, you may have access to their Network.
As I mentioned in my other posts, you may want to speak with Adelphia directly about your browsing experience. They may have other codes you can try to enhance browsing performance.

  • Some general advice needed please

Until today my network was DSL, AE802.11g with ethernet external drive and usb printer, a cube and printer on a remote AE802.11g and an express for the stereo. I had 3 laptops connecting except from one room that I want to move a printer to and use as an office. So I bought some more kit to extend the network.
A new AE802.11n and another express arrived today. Because the house is big with thick walls I think I need at least one airport set up as a relay rather than remote. After reading the discussions I managed to get the new AE set up and connected to the DSL. but, I seldom get more than 1 or 2 AE or expresses show up in airport utility making it hard to set them to join the network which seems to keep disappearing. The most remote AE is near one of the expresses but does not see the network.
Any suggestions for the optimal settings for each device? And what order should I set them up in?

Thank you. Having the airports all in proximity was the key and, of course, I eventually found the same advice in an apple help file. I set the new AExtreme up as WDS main with an ethernet disk for backups and music. An old AExtreme as WDS remote serves the Cube by ethernet and a usb printer. An AExpress as WDS remote serves one stereo. The other AExpress is WDS relay serving another stereo and helping the network reach the office where the last old AExtreme is WDS remote with another USB printer. The 3 mac laptops are happy. I have yet to try any PCs.

    Hi
That screen grab helps a lot. There’s a much easier way of doing what you’re doing.
Remove all your tabs and set the text in justified paragraphs.
I’ve typed in dummy text in the example I made below, but after “19.1” put in a space and put your blinking cursor after the space and before the ’N’ of ‘Notices'.
Then hold down the Command key and hit Backspace (on Mac at least - it’s the key between the Inverted commas/ apostrophe key and the return key).
The text will jump into place the way you want it to.
    Hope that helps
    Paul
PS You can set a tab, instead of using a space, in the description I gave above. So, after 19.1 or 19.2 or 19.185 etc etc insert a tab, then hit the Command Backspace after every paragraph number and they'll all line up exactly together. You'll find that editing text within the paragraphs
after you've set it will be LOADS easier this way.
You can put the tab anywhere you want it to be using 'Command-ShiftT' and putting a 'left align' tab just after the number. Just type the Command Backspace after the paragraph number and it'll work

  • Russian and Chinese Flash movies - general advice needed please

    Hi all -
This is a plea for some general 'jumping off' advice. I am an experienced Flash developer but now have a request to convert an existing xml-fed movie into both Russian and Chinese. I speak neither of these languages so we have had the content of the movie translated by a professional translation service.
The movie contains both png/jpgs with embedded text - created in Fireworks and also (for the bulk of the content) external xml files. I still need to be able to develop in an English environment - so purchasing a full version of Flash/Fireworks in Russian/Chinese would be folly. How should I go about this? If it is a matter of fonts - where should I get them from? And are there any considerations to be met with regards the xml files? Basically, I would really appreciate some general advice on this subject as it is completely new ground for me.
    Much obliged,
    Hugh

  • Some advice needed please

    Hi,
I am currently staying with my folks, and have downloaded itunes on their pc. I have signed in and have authorised the computer. It is recognising my ipod touch and i have run diagnostic tests and everything comes back as working successully...
However! I have imported cd's to the library but they are not syncing onto my ipod. I have also purchased a tv programme from the store, and again, this is not syncing onto my ipod.
Does anyone have any idea as to how i can resolve this?
    Thanks in advance.

    You need to update manually...
    Transfer music manually
Backup your music though, as if anything happens to your iPod, you may loose your music.

  • Oracle "guru"'s advice needed please :-)

I think I need an Oracle "guru" for this situation. 2 issues:
    1) Installed Oracle on a Standalone desktop with Win 2K Professional. Database Config. Assistant created Database - 9i Version of Oracle Standard Version. I get 2 errors: Ora 12541 and ora 12154 - all relating to TNS No Listener or failed to resolve service name. Now, I'm quite the newbie but I can't understand why I would need to configure this stuff on a standalone machine. It also asks me for ID and password and when I put the correct one in, that's when I get the No Listener error, however, I did indeed configure one. My Tsnnames.ora and listener.ora do have the database in them and everything in those files seems correct. The DB name is SteveTe and the PC (or host I guess is "Tower"). How can I configure or fix this?
    2) I used Migration Workbench to "import" an Access DB into Oracle which was successful BUT I also expected to see the database in Enterprise Manager and want to use SQL + to do queries with it. How can I do this? Currently I cannot do it and the DB doesn't show in Enterprise manager. Furthermore, if I attach it manually, it still asks me for a ID and Password and it doesn't have one so how do I get around this?
If someone can help, please send me some detailed instructions to get me out of the Oracle "quicksand" that I'm in. Thanks,
    Steve

I would suggest using XSL to define your presentation layer. This will be much faster than accessing tables. It also allows you to change your presentation on-the-fly with different XSL files.
Storing the XML in the database is a good idea. Especially in 9i which will have native XML support with the use of a new datatype called XMLType. It uses CLOB's under the covers, but will give you native access to your XML data.

  • Advice needed :please help

    Hi,
We have an application that has 2 database tables that hold presentation information as:
    Table :- screens_info
Contents of a record :- what is the background color , title , link colors etc. for a screen in the application
    Table :- tables_info
Contents of a record :- what is the format of a column of a table that needs to be displayed such as heading , data-type , textbox/listbox etc. , needs to be presented in presentable version , width
I was thinking for a java solution and use XML instead of database presentation tables. There will be multiple XSL and XML for this presentation info.
I need to justify this approach to my colleagues.
    Here are some points:
    FOR -->
    1. Database is not a good way for storing presentation info. whereas XML is
    2. Later on we can change it easily if required as well as talk more effectively with other applications ( which is our need in near future )
    3. For each screen load and reload , we need not access database presentation tables. Improves performance
    Against -->
    1. It's fine for saying not to store the data in database , but ultimately we have to access the XML and the files etc.
    2. I am planning to use XSQL servlet from Oracle that basically will handle the query execution part and return a proper output as I am going to specify with a stylesheet
This poses a danger in case tomorrow we plan to deal with some other database than Oracle. So instead of that I can go for java beans and XMl parsers.
I am not able to exactly specify the advantages of storing presentation info. in XML.
Please guide me and correct if I am wrong. I badly need help on this decision.
    Thanks
    -kg

    Hi Steve,
    That's a good point.
Related question is as I am going to use XSQL servlet, if we shift tomorrow some other database than oracle , XSQL servlet is of no use I guess and I should go for parsing and all by myself. Isn't it?
But can you tell me the major advantages of using XML in my case?
    Thanks-
    Kirti

  • K9A2 plat hardware, CPU monitoring-advice needed please

    Hi,
It seems that the MSI's "dualcore center" does not accurately displays CPU temp, normally it shows CPU temp. at lower than room temp.
Also sometimes dual-core-center freeze/hangup other programs as well.
With that being said,  I am looking for advice/recommendation as to what program to use to monitor CPU temps; something that would show in the task bar, show current temp., and does not hog up lot of resources.
    thanks

Oh yes... got to pay more attention to the spell checker.
Ironic.... I come here for technical advice and I get a lesson in spelling.    thanks Frankenputer. Furthermore ironic the fact is that I claim that I am not obsessed, yet I keep coming back here too read /learn more. May be it is not an obsession but an addiction. I am just a newbie here, some of you have post count  above 1K. Hee-heeee..
Fredric, you mention bios is the most accurate, but you can't access it during a game play or application use.
The only time I see bios info is when I boot. (yes boot  no need to correct.... boot=  as in pressing the power "ON" button to begin PC operation) it would not be a good monitoring tool.
    Hans
There is room , I am just not satisfied the way it is mounted. A huge, heavy heatsink hanging out to the side which is supported by the MOBO, now you hang another object(fan) on the heatsink; just like hanging weight on the end of a lever. Then you spin up the  fan and let it vibrate, these cheap fans not balanced as they should be.  An air tunnel or duct system would be a much better way to bring airflow to a heat sink, better than hanging a fan on it.
Normal way  of mounting works of course. I am just testing to see if there is a better way. I am using a fan, just mounting it elsewhere.
Products engineered certain way because size, cost, or compatibility issues. Not necessarily to be most efficient.
My corsair TX750 PSU a good example.  A fan is mounted inside; size and compability issue.
So the engineers put a 140 mm fan on the bottom(inside),  blocked half of its airflow with a plastic shield so air is moved to the back, though and out.
I removed the fan and the airflow blocking plastic piece, mounted fan on outside of  PSU. Airflow has nearly doubled. I am sure it runs cooler too.  A slight mod to the case was necessary. Now I sleep better at night  (kiddding)
This PSU (unmodified) in an Antec P182 case barely moved any air through it. I ended up selling the the antec 182.

  • Output quality advice needed please.

    Hi,
I'm new to the forum and new to the world of video editing and I've got a basic question that I'm hoping someone could help me with.
I'm shooting 1920 x 1080 HD (H.264) footage with a Canon 7D DSLR camera. I've just purchased my first HDTV and Blu-ray player and I'm obviously dying to see what the quality is like from my camera's video.
I quickly put a few clips together and selected the burn to DVD option. I selected PAL-Widescreen and unticked the Quality box, I put the quality slider at Highest Quality. The DVD played fine on my Blu-ray player and I assumed I was watching my video footage in high definition at the maximum quality.
However, someone has just informed me that it's not high definition at all, because I've selected the output as PAL-Widescreen it's actually standard definition footage 720 X 576. My TV states the footage is 1080p though.
Could someone clarify please. Am I watching the footage in HD, and if not, what settings do I need to apply to see the best quality?
Any help would be very much appreciated, thank you.

Also, some BD players have chips to up-rez SD material to as close to HD, as possible. Those chips do a really good job, so that a SD DVD will be better on them, than on an older plain DVD player. They will not be BD quality, but will be improved. The amount of improvement will depend on the exact player and the up-rezzing chip(s) that it has. My SD DVD's look better on my higher-end BD players, hooked to HD TV's, than they do on my plain-old DVD players (use those to test) and older TV's. I find the end result amazing, but still short of full BD quality. Those up-rezzing chips are amazing, at least to me.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - for background and full specs. on DVD and BD, this ARTICLE has some great links. It's basically a FAQ listing from Jim Taylor's multi-1000 page book, DVD Demystified - the DVD/BD "bible."

  • Connection Advice Needed Please

    Hi All
I moved house over a week ago and asked to transfer my BT Services over (but thats a whole other shambolic issue).  At my previous house, my HH5 was connected to the Master Phone Socket and I had Infinity 2 Unlimited.  However, the new house already has FTTP installed - with an ONT box and back up battery box on the wall.
I've not been able to get any advice from BT, but can someone tell me if I just plug my devices straight into the wall mounted box or do I plug my old HH5 into the ONT box and use my old wireless SSID as usual?  Or do I still just plug my HH5 into the main phone socket?
I did not ask for the FTTP super fast service, so they should be activating my old 76MBps Infinity 2 service.
    Many thanks
    Liz

    Hi EWINMK17
If you have FTTP and already have the ONT (Openreach optical network box) and backup battery installed, then all you need to do is connect your Home Hub 5 via the WAN port (may be coloured red) on the back of the Home Hub 5 to the LAN1/Port1 port on the ONT with an ethernet cable.
Are there any lights light up on the ONT?
Here's some information about the lights on the ONT box: http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/36945/~/fibre-home-phone-service%3A-lights-on-the-ope...
Have a look at page 11 on the user manual on how to connect your HH5 to the ONT here http://btsupport.custhelp.com/ci/fattach/get/3309418/1381227399/redirect/1

  • Advice needed please

    Hello there,
New to the forum and cannot find help anywhere else.
I have lost the calculator software and cannot reinstall/retrieve it.
Also, any software I try to install doesn't work - HotSync stops and says the application wasn't responding to HotSync.
Any advice would be much appreciated - thank you
    Post relates to: Palm Z22

    1. It's as good, if not better.
    2. According to Apple, the same material was used on the 5th Gen iPods as the Nano. You can draw your own conclusions on scratching issues.
    3. Yes.
    4. Yes.
    5. No, you need to upgrade to iTunes 6 in order to get video functionality. You won't need to reinstall playlists (as you put it). Playlists will remain intact after the upgrade from iTunes 4 to iTunes 6.

  • 1st gen imac, dual core no power?  Some  helpful advice requested please....

Please pardon my grammar, sentence syntax and perhaps spelling!
Yes I have read all the gloom and doom posts regarding logic boards etc, what are the chances it might be a power supply issue?
Cord in and out, pram reset, no power light, no response to keyboard, no connected accessories, nothing on screen, no response to attempted insertion of disks, so sound (start up or otherwise), no sound of disk trying to boot etc, etc. Tried alternative cord as well...rarely shut down except for moving unit, days away etc
Please could you helpful guys and girls throw some ideas about what my issue with this rather old (first intel imac early 2006, 2o" screen) but beloved piece of tech might be?
My Imac simply went to sleep one fine spring morning and never woke up. Thanks in advance!!

I am on the phone right now with a product specialist about my iMac G5 power supply issues. Kind of ***** because he has, in so many words, said that the Genius is the Alpha and Omega and can extend the 3 year coverage. For me that is great except that the Apple store is over an hour away. I don't understand why the dude on the phone can't pull the switch and make it happen as well.
    Factor in:
Unplugging iMac G5 and all peripherals
    Loading it in the car
    Driving an hour
Carrying it into the Mall (apple store)
    Waiting for my Genius appointment
More than likely getting it fixed for free (from the sounds of things)
Driving back after it is fixed
    Doing everything listed in reverse.
Would it just be easier to pay the $108 for a new power supply, wait a few days, undo some screws, and BAM! it works again?
Update. Off the phone now. The product specialist flexed his muscles, back handed the Genius to gain authority, and basically stated that they WILL DEFINITELY repair either the power supply or the logic board or both if needed. I have already had them replace the logic board once. BUT, I still have to load it up and take it to the Apple Store. Boo.

  • Urgent advice needed please help!

I need a new laptop asap that is the urgency part over with!

    Intel i5 4200M dual core 3mb cache 2:6/3.2Ghz processor
    8gb ram
    nvidia gt740  2gb
Keeping in mind I will mostly be just editing canon dale 1080p footage.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
budget for laptop is 800 euro. So far the best all rounder for vid editing is: Toshiba s70-a-11h

That unfortunately is a common misconception with GPU acceleration. GPU acceleration handles certain frame features such as scaling interpolation, and some effects. It current does not handle decoding/encoding with Adobe. That is handled by the CPU. Because the Decoding has to start the process the CPU determines the overall performance/load on the GPU at any point in time. This also means that at any point in time the CPU is not necessarily handling less load. The CPU is just more focused on what it has to do such as decoding/encoding and many effects. All of this means no I dont think the 740M will change the user experience enough to stop the requirement for rending the timeline to playback. It will help but that is all. The CPU is really low for this type of compression. Pro Res or DNxHD would probably work ok on that CPU simply because the compression level is much lower and they are very efficient codecs with regards to performance. I would suggest looking at Cineform if you need to get this laptop and the realtime playback is not good enough for your workflow. Cineform allows you far better performance with more limited specs.
BTW 8GB of ram is really low for GPU acceleration and HD. The biggest current mistake people are making is configuring systems without nearly enough ram to optimally handle the GPU acceleration. GPU acceleration requires a significant amount of ram because of how it works and transits through your system ram. Even if a system has the fastest CPU and best GPU, the performance is going to be poor if the system ram is to low. Most of the power available in that config would not even be utilized.
