Some good, free, useful Mactel software

Hello all, second post ever - right after the first, but I want to switch gears. I am 100% brand new to the Mac world - I have been a PC user for about 15 years now. On the PC, I have Sound Forge, Acid, Vegas, FL Studio, and many various other softwares and things... but what about the Mac?
I know there's Ableton Live, Logic, etc. But, I'm new to this world, and I don't know the places to look for the right tools. I would love any and ALL free/cheap software recommendations, things you just can't live without, for audio editing, photo editing, websites, anything. Any and all computer tasks! What's essential... what's better than the default Apple apps... I want to know it all!
But on top of that, I would prefer them to be Mactel compatible - Rosetta is aight, X11 is nearly unacceptable.
So... let'er rip. Give 'em to me.

If you are new, don't rush your thing, enjoy it and try to get along with apple programs included, like iLife, Comiic life, etc.
For your audio recording need, try to play with Garage band first, and if you are familiar, try to download plug ins (Audio Unit) for it, some are free.

I use ProTools LE with mBox on my eMac, and it served me well until now, and mBox 2 is a good starter to play with for it is less than $500 and already has plug ins and couple software bundled beside Pro Tools LE.
Just download the latest ver 7.1.1 that support intel mac, and you are ready to go. And recently digidesign add macbook as machine that supported too.

The common census by the old timers on the forum is that you should not have any AV software on your Mac cause its not needed, yet the forums are full of people that have been infected with Malware which the same people help clean afterwards.
This totally befuddles me. I take care of quite a few macs and in the past few years have installed Anti Virus software on them and other than Sophos not catching the latest kinds of Malware that are out in the wild, I have not experienced any of the problems that the so called experts claim that they do.
Over the past few months I have migrated over 50 Macs from using Sophos to now using aVast Free Anti Virus for Mac. Other than getting more alerts of Windows viruses being found in Mail there has been no downside whatsover.
I believe in the old saying that an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure. So with that I will recommend that you should have some sort of Anti Virus software on your Mac. As I said prior, for now I an recommending avast Anti Virus for Mac. This will protect your Mac from getting infected with malware before you have to come back and ask the experts here how to fix your Mac and get rid of the malware.
When doing a scan I recommend that you only have it set to only show infections. Since it cannot read some compressed files and reports them as an error.

99% of podcasts are free and available through iTunes. There are podcast available for just about any topic under the sun. Do a web search for anything that interests you adding podcast to the search terms and I'm sure you'll find something that interests you.
A lot of public radio broadcasters such as CBC, NPR and PRI have their shows available as podcasts. I like This American Life, Not Necessarily The Opra (not music) and Radiolab to name a few. For Tech related shows you can't beat anything by Leo Laporte on his TWIT network or the offerings at CNet.
If you can't find your favorite show in iTunes Store you can still subscribe to it using the option in iTunes Advance menu.
For Audiobooks, not free, but you can't beat a subscription to Audible.com.

I know this question has been answered before, but I need a source for some good free music for a redo of a little iMovie vid produced by a nonprofit...the existing music clip from the iMovie is not quite what is needed...looking for some uplifting, inspiring ... about 90sec to 2min or so...thanks

I don't know of any that do exactly that, but I use Pinger. You can even make free wifi calls trough them. Call quality is as good, if not better, than Skype too.

I need some good converting softwares for my 5th gen ipod. i cant find anything to convert my mpegs to mp4 for my gen 5 ipod

I have a Windows machine and I bought Quicktime Pro and it works for the short .mov files my digital cameras create. I tried a bunch of "free" DVD conversion programs, including Videora for iPod with mixed results (I couldn't get Videora to work). Finally, I bought PQDVD for iPod (http://www.pqdvd.com). It was expensive when you compare it to free software ($39.95) BUT you can stick a DVD (that you own of course) in and press a couple of buttons and it makes a video file. The nicest part is it makes very small files (275MB average). It also does it twice to three times as fast as anything else I tried. The movies look and play great on the iPod (except you have to go all the way to the end to stop them, hmmm). So if I pay myself $10 an hour, I'll get my money back pretty quickly. In one night, I got 4 movies moved over to my iPod, no hassles.

i have a story about my sister, am talking on her behalf, she got stolen her phone at a caffee when she just come from a horeble exam, she was very mad and having haedace for not doing well at the exam, i ask her if we could have coffee before we go home, once she sate; while i was getting the coffee for her, some one snicked to her pocket and took the phone, immidatly she feelt it and went on to searching, but nathing was hopefull. what makes it more heart braking is that she worked day and night just to buy the phone and pay for her books and so on as a student. she use to work 16 houres a day before she had to start school. 8 houres in one place and then to the other place. and she was always demanding for more houres to work; one day her boss saw her on her other job and she was serprised to see her and saied OHhh my God Milly if you work like this, i wonder if you servive, how could you also ask for more houres, My sis had to do it she has no parents or any thing, well the phone was taken after only two months of having it. the sad thing is she stile dream having it even though she can't think of buying againe. well me i have tryed a lot of things but i know some were out there there is a solution for people like this, it is not always fare for some one who has payed up to 800 to just loose his ......

I'm sorry, but your sister, unless she had already turned on the "Find my iPhone" feature and the person who took the phone has not disabled it, is out of luck. She should report the theft to local police authorities, including the serial number of her iPhone. While her experience is unfortunate, there are good reasons why Apple cannot do anything else about it.
I hope she gets her phone back.

Indeed, you can set the strings for the on and off state, but it will
only show the default off state text when running on a pocketPC. A
solution is to use two buttons: one to turn on and another to turn off.
By overlaying the two controls and hiding the last pushed button, you
can actually simulate a single button. See attachment (LV7.1).
