Some help required with Clipping Masks

Hi,
I'm quite new to illustrator - I've made designs before but really just playing at it.
Now, though, I have a design which I had "grunged" up by applying a texture and knocking out the sections of the design with it in Photoshop. However, I want to learn how to do that in illustrator and thought that clipping mask was the answer.
I can get the clipping mask to work except it creates the opposite effect I am after...It masks the portions of the image I want to keep visible leaving those areas I want masked visible.
In effect I need to inverse the mask but I don't know how to do it in illustrator.
Hopefully, I've made it clear what I mean and I appriciate any advice.

You can use the Transparency panel to make an opacity bask as well and inverse that.
Or if you wish use the pathfinder panel to minus front. I think the second icon on top from the left.
Read the help files about opacity masks, pathfinder and clipping mask
and it might also work as a compound path Command 8 or Control 8.

Some help required with logic for a dynamic sql query

i have below code but not sure how to resolve this problem - what i need is to be able to dynamically
the problem:
i have a rabbge of paratmeters coming in from a form and need to be able to create a dynamic query string to go into a prepared statement object.
the problem i have is there are 2 fields year range and year.
if year range is none i need to create the query string as such :
where the value of year can be serached on exactly
str.append("VOLUME_YEAR = ? ");the probelm is if the year range is 5 or year range is 10 i dont know how to maipulate the query string to be able to set the string such that i can then place the year value in the place holder in preparedStatement.setInt(1, year)
how can i create the intial query string ie.- what are the possible things that i can do. - i'm thinking of things like putting some type of between or such type query statement - but not at all sure how the syntax would go - ie. how would i use the year value and how would i create this dynamic part of the query string so that the JDBC regonises it?

Although, i think its far too advanced for me to understand and try to manipulate it and fit my problem. I'm pretty new to programming as you can probably see from my simple if else type statements. But i'm going to give it a try and see how it goes.

i have a year being entered in form . in the database there is a column year volume which contains year in single year value format and also in a year range value format - thus as in below - how could i do this -
eg.
user can enter a value in the year field a single value or a range value - then he can select +/-5 or 10 yrs range on that value - the DB holds the values as single values and ranges as below -
one suggested apporach is as follows if a single user is alloweed to enter only a single value in the filed and select a query range +/- 5 etc..
volume year of �1926-1928� and the user enters �1927�, the query has to find all records where
look for records that are �less than or equal to� 1927. It then has to check to see if it contains a range. For those that it finds containing a range, it has to work out what the �upper� year is and check to see if that is �greater than or equal� to 1927. If it is, then that is a possible matchanother approach that is suggested is to have a drop down with all years from databse and user is only llowed to select value from drop down and following logic is suggested :
Because volumes can be received as ranges (e.g. 1964-1966), some extra coding is required where the user asks for a Year Range (such as + or � 5).
Using the Year selected from the dropdown list, split it into 2 values, a low year and a high year. For example, if �1965-1968� is selected from the year dropdown, split it into �1965� and �1968� for the low year and high year respectively. If �1964� is selected from the year dropdown, split it into �1964� and �1964�. Now take the Year Range that the user has entered into account. For example, if the user has entered 5, subtract 5 from the low year and add 5 to the high year. Using these values, include the following search criteria in the query to the database:-

What is the size of your hard disk? PSE 4 is a very old program and I suspect it is not able to access the entire hard disk on your machine. Just a thought here.

Help required with connection / settings between a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum EX (soundcard) and a Creative DTT3500 Digital (5. speakers).
The problem
No sound from any of the speakers. (Exception can plug in headphones at front)
Background
My computer has been recently upgraded at my local computer shop and all programs re-installed (including driver update from Creative's website). However after reconnecting speakers and restoring the original settings I?m getting no sound from any of the speakers. I?ve followed all the available advice/instructions I can find on this website and manuals to no avail.
Set-up
Physical
(Digital DIN) Speakers/decoder amplifier (DTT3500) connected to the (digital out) soundcard (Audigy Platinum EX) using minijack to DIN cable. (As per instruction manual)
Software
Creative Audio Consul ? setting as per instructions, however have tried variations in vain. (Note: above tabs there is a select device box with SB Audigy [A0000] in it ? only option. Just wondering what [A0000] means?)
Your advice please. A simple step by step guide would be appreciated, many thanks in advance, Jon

Do you have the original installation disk?
If so, try installing THOSE drivers, ESPECIALLY if it worked before. Be sure to uninstall what is there now, first.
Its natural for most people to want the 'latest' drivers for their hardware. However:

I have successfully installed all of my creative cloud apps with the exception being acrobat.
I cannot print from Indesign to PDF.
I have unistalled, reinstalled and still no Adobe Acrobat.
I now have to go back to Windows 8 and create the PDF's there.
Any one know how to get around this issue?

OSX has effectively killed the ability to print to pdf, (print to pdf eliminates most of the "Rich features" of current pdf).
Export from InDesign, always, excpet for the 1% of the time where you know why print to pdf would produce a better result.

Because it was not possible to apply a gradient to a stroke in CS5. When you open the file in CS5, it is reduced to something that can be rendered in CS5.

Seamless repeating pattern - using embedded images with clipping masks

Hi forum,
We struggle a bit creating a seemless repeating pattern that includes embedded images with clipping masks applied.
Our pattern is a 550x550mm black square with various embedded inserted on top. All of these images have Clipping Masks applied to hide unwanted areas.
These images are placed so they create a seamless repeating pattern and this includes areas that overlap the square.
Once we create a swatch from this pattern the repeatable area becomes too big as it includes the unwanted areas hidden by the clipping masks.
Because the repeatable area is now too big it's actually not repeatable.
We tried various things in order to solve this issue. Pathfinder/crop to delete the unwanted areas in the images etc.
None of them worked good enough.
We though of just livetracing the images, but due to the complexity this is not an option.
Do we really have to do our "cutting" in Photoshop or do you know any fancy tricks for issues like this?

Kenneth,
You may try the destructive deed, with the Clipping Mask selected:
1) In the Transparency palette/panel dropdown list select anything but Normal (Multiply is fine),
2) Object>Flatten Transparency, just keep the defaults including 100% Vector,
3) Shudder.
This should reduce the size to the Bounding Box of the Clipping Path.

Help with clipping mask in illustrator cs5

In Illustrator CS5, is there any way to get rid of the white space around the artwork when exporting a jpg? I currently use the mask tool, but when you export the jpg, it still shows the white space where the clipped objects are. Is there any clipping mask? Or any way to just make the jpg the size of the artboard, that way any of the objects that fall off the edge of the artboard woldn't be included?

Yes but if I use the artboard, when I export it to a jpg it still has the white space around the outside. Some of my clipped images fall outside the clipping mask so there is white space where the physical images are even though the mask technically covers them up. Thanks

I am running cs4, I have a picture of a hand holding a piece of paper, I want to put text behind the thumb and the forefinger. I'm thinking clipping mask, but I can't seem to get it to work right. Please help?

Youv'e got your clipping mask reversed. You want to draw paths around the areas you want to keep where the text is concerned. What you currently have would allow you to mask content in the fingers themselves, not outside of them. And you want the clipping mask to be placed on the text, not on the hand image.
Basically you want a path which matches the outline of the card (going around those fingers) then place the text inside that clipping mask.
Red path is the clipping mask....

Problems with clipping mask, Photoshop CS6

I have been working with a clipping mask around a complex item. This included a large clipping mask around the edge of the item, along with sections inside this path that were also 'cut out'. I am not sure how, but I seem to have done something which is now stopping me from making the additional 'internal' paths. Instead of these areas being blocked by the clipping mask, they are appearing as paths drawn over the image and not as part of the clipping layer (yes, checked that I was working in the right layer). I have checked the 'outside' path and this is all connected - no gaps. I have tried to set up a new file and start again, but now can't seem to make the mask behave properly. Can anyone help?

THanks for that, but to be honest I am a real novice - learning in pieces - so am not sure how to check path modes etc. ..Any suggestions??

Message was edited by: fjb3012. When I try and cut out new sections one of two things happen - I lose the image completely OR the new path sits on top of the image, with no clipping.

Trouble with Clipping Masks

Hello!
I created a pattern in illustrator, and then I created an object, and I wanted to fill half of the object with the pattern, so I used a clipping mask to do this.. however, now when i try to group everything together, the clipping mask in released and the pattern spills all over the artbaord... when i try to copy and paste into a new document, everything is pasted as white instead. When i try to merge the layers, the clipping mask is released...
I'm not sure how to fix this and have been searching for a solution for it. I hope you can help me figure out how to keep the clipping mask from releasing..
Also, I tried rasterizing but that doesnt work either and it makes my shapes all rough and choppy!

I always select with the solid selection tool ^^ infact when i want to select everything i just use command+a.
Anyway, I'm still unable to group or copy the entire picture without the clipping mask releasing..

Copy object with clipping mask from illustrator to photoshop

I want to copy objects from illustrator to use in photoshop, but the eps file that i am working in has a clipping mask and when i attempt to copy objects in that file from illustrator 6 to photoshop 6, portions (in some cases) all of the object turns black or gray. I'm sure this is a simple noob error (hope my question is clear enough), and it's driving me nuts. I have searched for solutions using terms "clipping mask, black, copy, move, illustrator, photoshop, etc." and can't find any discussions on this topic. Can you please help?

You simply lose the blending modes and transparency settings because this stuff works differently in both programs. You will have to reinstate it manually e.g. if the white highlight is created usuing Add blending mode, you will ghave to use the same in PS...

Having a Problem with Clipping Masks

Everytime I add an adjustment layer to CS5 layers palette, the adjustment layer comes in as a clipping mask and is clipped to the layer below. I must have accidently invoked something that is causing this. It is very frustrating and time consuming have to change each layer in my stack. WHAT DID I DO WRONG... and HOW DO I FIX IT.

Noel as I have noted in the past it is easy to code around the bug by recording all add adjustment layers clipped to previous layer then un-clip the ones you want to be applied to all, The problem is this will not fix all the good action that been recorded in the past and download by members in a large community of Photoshop user. I don't have a clue to how many have download actions I made available. I stopped using Adobe exchange while the exchange recorded the number of downloads exchange makes it almost impossible to make updates for they need to approved them first and they never seem to. I know thousands have downloaded my actions but don't know if any use them or who use them. The only contact I have is if someone reports a bug. Yes some get by me to. Most of the downloaders of these actions don't know that Adobe has introduce a bug that may effect actions they downloaded and have been using for many releases of Photoshop without problems. The nasty part is action will work correctly sometime and not other time and when some of the failure happen there is no error message an adjustment layer of the right type is added and may effect most of the document correctly so the error my go un-notice at the time it happens and then may notice at some later date. The bug need to be fixed. Then actions with the work around and those without the work around will work correctly.

How do I export with clipping mask?

I'm a newbie to Illustrator.
I have a starburst design with a clipping mask. When I try to export as png or jpg, there is a transparent or white border around my design - where the items clipped by the clipping mask are hidden.
I have flattened the file before exporting. I have "fit to art board". I have checked the "use art board" box when exporting. Nothing removes the border. My art is 8.5 x 11, and my art board is 8.5 x 11. Any other suggestions?

Help required with Image Field

Hi,
I have some 300 forms with image field set in them. I now need to import images into these image fields. The images are present on my local machine. If required i can upload these into my repository.
The issue is i am not able to create a batch process which will do this. Can some one please help me out with this issue.

This is possible if all your 300 forms has the similar fields hierarchy.
One of the several possible ways:
1. keep your forms & images in folders within livecycle server.
2. create a process to read all these form and images and set the image content into Image field using XPATH expression (SetValue activity)
Iterate through the number of forms available. You are done.
