Some hypertext links broken in generated PDF

Hi all,
I'm using FM 8.0p277 to generate a PDF of a book which uses hypertext TOC links to different chapters and topics. We've been using the same process for some time without any problems:
Generate TOC -> Print book to .ps -> run Distiller.
However, recently some of the hypertext links have ceased to work, seemingly at random.
Sample marker text from a nonfunctional link: openObjectId 01 PP System Theory of Op.fm:2 699335
Sample marker text from a functional link: openObjectId 02 PP Intro & Sys Rqts.fm:2 683648
The broken links are not isolated to a certain paragraph style or even to a specific book.
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? I'm really at a loss.

Arnis Gubins
Thank you very much; the broken links were pointing to markers I'd removed during the release process instead of where I thought they were supposed to be pointing. I think it was a PEBKAC issue, but I never would have noticed if you hadn't mentioned checking the link properties.
I regenerated the PDF after fixing the markers in FM and everything seems to be working fine.
Thanks again!

  • Hypertext links not working after pdf conversion

    I have a document that contains many hyperlinks to external PDF files. Not sure if I created the link correctly to start with, but when I save the book file as a pdf none of the links to the external pdf files work.  I entered the location of the files as the marker tex as shown ../Vendor_Data/Show/vendor_manual.pdf not sure if I need anything in the hypertext field. can someone assist. the directory structure is:  c:\techpubs\Frame\files.fm  the vendor data is c:\techpubsVendor_Data\data.pdf.
    Thanks

    > ... many hyperlinks to external PDF files.
    What Marker type?
    >  I entered the location of the files as the marker text as shown
    >../Vendor_Data/Show/vendor_manual.pdf
    Why is "/Show" in that path?
    > ... the directory structure is:
    > c:\techpubs\Frame\files.fm
    > the vendor data is
    > c:\techpubsVendor_Data\data.pdf.
    You are missing a "\" after "techpubs", and the pdf names don't match.
    I presume that even when you get that working locally, you are aware that it won't work whenever the calling and called files don't have exactly the same directory-relative relationship. This further means that if consumers of your documents make local copies, they also have to recreate that local directory structure, which typically they won't.
    Using fully qualified URLs instead of relative path references is more stable, but of course always forces the reference to use the web.

    Hello,

  • Difference in generated PDF file size between distiller 6.0 and 10.0

    Hi,
    we are currently using Distiller server 6.0.1 on Windows server 2003 to convert PS to PDF, we want to upgrade our operating system to Windows server 2008 R2 but distiller server is not supported on this,
    so we are evaluating Acrobat distiller 10 which comes along with Acrobat pro x but we noticed some slight difference in the generated PDF file size, for the same PS the distiller server 6.0 generated PDF
    file size of 55 KB whereas Acrobat distiller 10 generated PDF file is 53 KB. The output looks same but wondering whether is it safe to continue further with the file size difference, it would be good
    if you could provide some insight into why the file sizes are different between these two versions.
    Thanks,
    Anand

  • Hypertext link in pdf, hypertext link in pdf

    Hello,
    Could anyone tell me how to create a pdf with the hypertext link from word or power point ?
    Thanks a lot

    Hi Adriana,
    I stay away from Firefox for this very reason. It doesn't seem to show things as well as IE. I don't know if this is because I am missing some plugins, but have you tried using IE.
    Possible solution:
    It seems that Firefox >1.5 needs to have its security settings changed, using a user.js file, before it will activate links to files. Chrome has similar drawbacks. This browser requires a plugin installed before links to files work properly (see https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/jllpkdkcdjndhggodimiphkghogcpida)
    I have also seen the Allow / Block message. It isn't there all the time, but I suspect it has something to do with access rights to the drive / directory / folder where the PDF is stored. I have learned to just live with this.
    Note, it is important that you use the correct number of slashes. Previously, Firefox (<1.5) required 5 forward slashes in the link path.

  • Links to FM Cross References do not work in Generated PDFs

    Windows XP Professional SP2, FrameMaker 7.0p576, Acrobat Professional 8.1.2.
    I have multiple volumes that are intended to ship together. So, for argument's sake, I have Book_1.fm, Book_2.fm, Book_3.fm.
    Within Book_2.fm, I create cross-references to Book_2.fm and Book_1.fm.
    When I generate the PDF files for all three books (using Frame's Print Book, Printer set to Adobe PDF, Generate Acrobat Data so my bookmarks are generated as links), Book_2.pdf's cross-referenced links to within Book_2.pdf work perfectly. However, Book_2.pdf's cross-references to Book_1.pdf result in the following message:
    There was an error opening this document. This file cannot be found.
    The problem occurs whether the books reside independently, as a single combined PDF file, or as a PDF package (single combined and package both generated after the three individual Book_x.pdf files exist).
    I have kept all PDF filenames identical (minus the extension) to the FrameMaker .book names.
    Thanks for your input.

    Sandra,
    This is an explanation and NOT a solution. When you create a cross-reference to another file, you have to have the file open. Apparently, Frame sees a file in a different book as just a file; it seems to have no way to know that it is part of a different book. Hence, the link points to a chapter name, not a book name. Again this is just an explanation.
    I do not know how, or if there is a way, to do what you want to do, other than edit the links after the PDFs are created, which I am sure is not what you were intending to do.
    Maybe the gurus on these forums have a way to do it.

  • How to: Save as PDF AND preserve Word bookmarks/hypertext links

    Is there a way to save a word doc as PDF in OS 10.4 that enables the hypertext links in the PDF file? When I save, i just get blue underlined text in the PDF but it cannot be clicked on to follow the links embedded in the original Word doc.
    thanks for any solutions/workarounds.

    I wonder if this is actually a limitation of Preview... I've made PDF files with Illustrator that, when I open them in Acrobat have active links. The links don't work when I open the same file with Preview.

  • Hypertext links are not always preserved from Word to PDF, using Aperçu or Adobe, depending on OS 10 or Lion. Why? This generally works perfectly in Windows. Why are Apple and Adobe unable to correctly handle links when converting from Word to PDF?

    Hypertext links are not always preserved from Word to PDF, using Aperçu or Adobe, depending on OS 10 or Lion. Why? This generally works perfectly in Windows. Why are Apple and Adobe unable to correctly handle links when converting from Word to PDF?
    Depending on the system version, and Office Word version:
    - a pure URL link starting with http or even www sometimes works in PDF, either produced by Aperçu or Adobe, sometimes does not work;
    - other kind of links where the text under display is not a URL, never work!
    I like everything with Apple computers and software, except PDF generation. Output files are usually bigger in size, and no better quality, than under Windows. Furthermore, it is weird that something as common as hyperlinks does not work correctly!
    I related this question with Mac OS X Snow Leopard, but the problem is still there with Mac OS Lion.
    This problem seems to have been around for years, without any proper solution from Apple and/or Adobe! To me, this is very embarrassing!

    Greetings NoNameGiven,
    If I understand the problem correctly (I’m not sure I do) you would prefer ‘iii’ to be read as “eye eye eye” rather than “three”? The alt text property is the only way that I know of to make this happen. Hope this helps.

  • IWeb hypertext links to pages from my site not "viewable" in some browsers

    I am new to iWeb 08. iWeb created hypertext links to eleven pages from my "top level" site are not "clickable" or viewable in some browsers yet the hyperlinks I added on top page to other sites don't present a problem.
    No problem with Safari or AOL Desktop Version 1.2 or Firefox browsers. However, AOL Ver 10.3.7 (rev 4136.310) only shows other site links and NOT the page links at the top of site page. Only a dot is visible where links to other pages in the site. I thought it could have been a Java Scripts problem so I updated my AOL to latest JAVA. Not concerned for my part but others with Mac AOL may have same problem.
    Is there something I could do diferent at my site or is this another AOL shortcoming?
    See: http://web.mac.com/louiedea/OceanaMed_Cruise_2008/MedCruise08.html
    Thanks, LouieDeA

    Gayle,
    No solution yet. I am sure it is a shortcoming of AOL's Mac browser but am trying to contact AOL support (difficult now that they are free). I don't use their browser but there are probably those that do. I presume you don't have that problem when you use Safari, etc?

  • Some Internet hypertext links or pop-ups not reacting

    Hi,
    Please, please I really need some help. I am about to throw Windows Vista and my Toshiba out the window!!
    For whatever reason some internet links that I try and click on - from trusted sights just don't work - I get absolutely no reaction from my PC - it does not even say not-responding, it is almost as if it has ignored my action of clicking on the link. When I try the same exercise on another machine using Windows XP it works fine.
    Similarly Ithe pop-up to allow me to load photographs at blogspot.com just ignores the fact that I have clicked on it.
    I have trawled through all the security options. Changed each one and tried again, unfortunately I have not had any success. Has anyone out there got any ideas? I would be most grateful.

    This issue is understandable and there is definitely not a kind of magic solution. If you wrote about some pages how we should understand your problem.
    Can you please send the link of those famous pages? I would like to test it with my notebooks (Vista and WXP).

  • FM10/Acrobat X hypertext link problems

    Hi All,
    I just upgraded from FM7 to FM10 (10.0.2.419 version), and Acrobat 6 to Acrobat X, and found that the hypertext links (which worked well in Acrobat6) within the same book are broken in Acrobat X. However, the cross-book hyperlinks work well in Acrobat6 and Acrobat X.
    I have 3 book files which contains cross-book hyperlinks and hypertext links within the same book. The book structure is as follows:
    ../book1/A.book
    ../book1/chapter1.fm
    ../book1/chapter2.fm
    ../book1/chapter3.fm
    ../book2/B.book
    ../book2/chapter1.fm
    ../book2/chapter2.fm
    ../book3/C.book
    ../book3/chapter1.fm
    ../book3/chapter2.fm
    ../book3/chapter3.fm
    All hyperlinks are linked with hypertext markers (newlink and gotolink in 'Special -> Hypertext'). The converted PDFs are placed in the same folder.
    The cross-book hyperlink works fine. My story is:
    book1 has cross-book hyperlinks to book2 and book3. To add a hyperlink from "book1's chapter1" to "book2's marker1", I add 'gotolink ../book2/chapter2.fm:marker1' in file ../book1/chapter1.fm.
    When converting these 3 books to pdf files, I'll open all book files, and print book to ps file one by one. After that, I'll use Acrobat Distiller (Acrobat X) to generate pdf files.
    The cross-book hyperlink 'gotolink ../book2/chapter2.fm:marker1' will be converted, the target filename will be 'book2.pdf', and the destination name will be 'M8.8.newlink.marker1'.
    The hypertext link within the same book is broken. The scenario is:
    In book1, I want to add a hyperlink from chapter3 to chapter1, so I insert the hypertext marker 'gotolink chapter1.fm:marker2' in file chapter3.fm. After the conversion, the target filename becomes 'chapter1.pdf' (it should be 'book1.pdf'), and the destination name becomes 'M5.8.newlink.marker2' (it should be 'M8.newlink.marker2').
    Am I missing something for the hyperlink above? Any thoughts?
    Regards,
    Maggie Yeong

    I think I am having the same problem and I suppose the issue is a matter of semantics and familiarity with linking in general. What I have is a PDF document with web links of the format that Kim describes, but my problem is that this format only appears to work for external links. So I need to ask what should kind of linking is suitable to internal references. For example, "<a href="Documentation/IO.OS 2.1.3 Technical Overview.pdf#nameddest=alarm&zoom=40">Tech Doc</a>" seems to work for me on a browser viewed PDF document only if "IO.OS 2.1.3 Technical Overview.pdf" is not the document containing the link. In other words named destinations do not seem to be the correct linking method for internal links in HTTP served documents. Perhaps the problem is the browser which is fix by workplace standards at IE7?

    1) Add an upper case letter to the start of each sentence. This helps the reader to scan the text quickly, looking for the important parts. It also helps to dispel the impression that the writer is just lazy.
    2) Try to do some research on your own, summarise it and state any conclusions you have reached. Ask a specific question and generally, try not to sound so pathetic.

  • FrameMaker 11 file link broken when published out to RoboHelp 10

    Hello
    I have the Adobe Technical Communication Suite 4 and am trying to test publish a FrameMaker 11 file out through
    the FrameMaker publish button to WebHelp (by way of RoboHelp 10).
    In the FrameMaker 11, file, I have a link to a PDF that sits down in a subfolder.  I have used the following approach:
    1. Highlighted text in a FrameMaker table.
    2. Chose Special>Hyptertext
    3. From the Hypertext panel, I selected Message Client from the Command drop down menu
         and in the syntax field I entered:  message openfile Foldouts/Foldout1.pdf
    4. I then tested the link in FrameMaker by using ALT and CTRL and it works.
    5. Next, I saved the FrameMaker file as a PDF (File>Save As PDF) and tested the PDF.  The PDF links work.
    So with all that said, how come I can't select File>Publish>WebHelp and have the link information carry through to the WebHelp HTM output?
    I tried this Publish option straight out of the box and it did not work.  I also tried creating a custom RoboHelp template (.XPJ file) and it did not work.
    I believe there is a PgfId marker that is generated when the Hyptertext is created in FrameMaker (using the process stated above), but that marker is not getting
    translated into an HREF, once it gets published out through RoboHelp 10.
    I also tried saving the FrameMaker 11 file directly as an HTML file using the FrameMaker 11 - File>Save As HTML process, but no links carried through
    using that process either.
    I do not know if this is a FrameMaker issue or a RoboHelp issue, so I am now posting this in both forums.
    If someone could point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it.
    Are there certain steps one must do to preserve FrameMaker Hypertext links that get published out through RoboHelp 10 to WebHelp?
    Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
    Jim

  • How do I generate PDF and CHM files from the a command line in windows?

    I am trying to set up a PC to build some documents during the night. I was looking for a way to get framemaker to generate PDF and CHM files via a command line in windows? How is this done with FrameMaker 12
    Thanks for the help
    Alex

    Hi,
    The part with generate a PDF via a jsx seems to work OK, except when FrameMaker decides that it will not work anymore. I must say I am not impressed with the stabillity of FrameMaker 12, there is room for a lot of improvement!.
    I have given up on how to figure out how to get FrameMaker 12 to generate chm files via jsx scripts, any pointes are still very welcome.
    The route I have taken is I make a RoboHelp project for each chm files I need to generate. The only thing this RoboHelp project contains is a link to the actual FrameMaker project I want to generate a chm file.
    To make the chm I start RoboHelp with a script that
    1) Opens the desired project
    2) Sets the desired output chm files name
    3) Generates the chm file
    4) And finally quits RoboHelp
    Below is a copy of the jsx in case anyone can reuse anything.  And yes parameters are transfered via enviroments variable. I have later learned there is some way to read the parameters given at a command line but this seems to work so I stick to this for now.
    // Get parameters
    var RhProjName = $.getenv("RH_PROJ_NAME");
    var RhChmName = $.getenv("RH_CHM_NAME");
    var RhLogFileName = $.getenv("RH_LOGFILE_NAME");
    var RhLogFile = new File(RhLogFileName);
    RhLogFile.open("w", "TEXT");
    RhLogFile.writeln("RH_PROJ_NAME : ", RhProjName);
    RhLogFile.writeln("RH_CHM_NAME : ", RhChmName);
    doc = RoboHelp.openProject (RhProjName, 1);
    var sslmngr = RoboHelp.project.SSLManager;
    for(var i = 1; i<=sslmngr.count; i++){
      var ssl = sslmngr.item(i);
      if(ssl.name == 'Microsoft HTML Help') {
        // Set the output location and file name
        ssl.setSpecificProperty("DestinationProjectName", RhChmName);
        if (doc.saveAll(true) ) {
          RhLogFile.writeln("saveAll returned TRUE");
        } else {
          RhLogFile.writeln("saveAll returned FALSE");
        if ( ssl.generate() ) {
          RhLogFile.writeln("ssl.generate returned TRUE");
        } else {
          RhLogFile.writeln("ssl.generate returned FALSE");
      } else {
        // alert ("Found " + ssl.name + " dont do anything");
    doc.saveAll(true);
    RhLogFile.close();
    RoboHelp.closeProject();
    RoboHelp.quit();
