Some keys not working on wired full keyboard

I recently got hold of a new-style wired keyboard that has the numeric keypad. When I plug it in most of the keys work fine, but the "return" and "caps lock" keys seem to do nothing. I think mechanically they are okay, I suspect there's some kind of key mapping problem.
I've checked the Input Sources section in System Preferences but selecting things like "US Extended" seems to have no effect.

Hello:
Who manufactures the
new-style wired keyboard that has the numeric keypad
If it is third-party, the manufacturer is the best source of information.

  • Keyboard: some keys not working

Some keys not working.  Need help/suggestions.  Not great with computers so PLEASE give details/steps re: how to do what you suggest - thanks!
Details: intel based iMac running snow leopard 10.6.8.  Apple wireless/bluetooth keyboard (came with the iMac).
Some keys suddenly stopped working:  space, tab, capLock, option key to the right of space bar (one on the left works), down arrow
The problem happens in various programs (safari, pages, etc)
The keyboard is fine on another iMac
A different keyboard is fine on this/the involved iMac
(nutshell: keyboard works fine - computer works fine, unless they're together)
    Here's what's been tried/checked:
-checked the settings for universal access ("mouse keys" are off) and checked for any bluetooth keyboard shortcuts.
-in system preferences "speech" is not set for "speak selected text when the key is pressed" - this is not checked/selected
-tried creating a new user but had the same issue so it's computer-wide rather than just a user account
-removed the keyboard and reconnected (using the +/- signs and "disconnect" and putting in a new code of numbers to pair keyboard)
    -language/text is set for english
-did the keyboard viewer and the keys in question did NOT highlight when pressed (but don't forget the entire keyboard is fine on a different computer so thekeys aren't the issue)
-"slow keys" is turned off re: keyboard in system preferences.
Any help is welcomed.  It's frustrating knowing the keyboard works, just not with this computer.  Please help.  Many thanks!

yes - not sure how this works...if you can see my original post there are a lot of details in there.  If you can't...
nutshell: the keyboard works on a different iMac
a different keyboard works on this/the involved iMac
I tried to create a different user and the keyboard still does not work so it is computer-wide
I also removed the keyboard from the computer (using the +/- symbols and disconnecting and then repairing it.  The problem remained
Thanks for any help.  It's crazy that the keyboard is fine and the computer is fine but together, there's the problem.
    Thank you!!!

  • Apple Keyboard used on MacBook: Some keys not working

    Hello,
I use an Apple Keyboard (USB-connection, aluminium, Model No.: A1243, 2007) for typing longer texts when my MacBook is connected to an external monitor.
Since I have re-installed the OS X software on my MacBook because I had to replace the hard drive, the Keyboard doesn't work successful. Some keys just don't work; The letters cannot be typed. (Affected keys: "8", "I", "K", "," and number pad keys "7", "4", "1")
I installed all software updates for keyboards that could be found on the apple support webpages.
The keyboard istelf doesn't show any defects for me.
What can I do to solve the provlem? Or to get to know if it's a software-based problem? I want to exclude all possible software reasons.. In a worst case I have to replace the keyboard, I think. But it always worked fine and a new one can be expensive.
    Thank you for all hints!

have you tried command-option and the keys? or command and one of the keys? if so did it work??? if not, try going into the finder, and go to preferences file, but did not know which one would be the culprit. The strategy I adopted, which took me back to my System 9 (and earlier) days, was to go into the Library folder of the affected user account, open up the Preferences folder (after backing it up elsewhere on the hard drive), and take out a small number of files (.plist files, etc) at a time, log out then back in and note any changes. The theory is that if there were any changes then it is most likely that the offending file was in the last group to be removed. You would then replace those files one at a time until the problem returned. Eventually I found the culprit. To my surprise it was the com.apple.loginwindow.plist file. Removing that cured things completely.
Why that particular preference file affected that particular key is beyond me, but it fixed the problem!

  • Keyboard - some keys not working? (Didn't spill anything though)

Hi - I am a new apple user (iMac Intel core 2 duo 24" screen) using Mac OS x 10.4.11 operating system. I have been learning it for about a month now. All of a sudden, only "some" of the keys won't work on my keyboard. THe numeric pad keys for number 4,5,&6 do not work. If you press them, nothing happens. Also, more importantly, the right "shift" key doesn't work. I am the only user and nothing was spilled on it. It has been working all along, and nothing was changed. Just to be sure, I checked the keyboard, mouse, shortcut, etc. settings, and everything (that I know of) is set right. Any idea what it could be?? Also, what is the best way to learn everything you can if you don't know a lot about the mac? The classes they offer? or ?? Thank you so much

Hi, welcome. As for the keyboard take it back to an Apple store/retailer and get it exchanged if under warranty. I have not heard of those particular keys just not working. The best way to learn about the mac is to...use it. Assign yourself some projects, play some games. There are lots of trial/freeware programs if you don't have the latest photoshop or quake. You'll run into things you're not sure about so that is where you'll learn. Check your systems Help and/or ask questions at the appropriate forum. Have fun.

  • IMac G5 & new apple keyboard - some keys not working

I have an iMac G5 (2GHz, 20 inch), running OS X Tiger (10.4.11) and I recently purchased the new apple keyboard (the wired version without the numpad, to save desk space). I am finding that the function keys at the top don't work - specifically, the keys that control sound. I've googled this, and installed the Keyboard Software Update 1.2 that most people said fixed their problem - but it hasn't fixed mine.
Instead, the f10-f12 keys don't control the sound functions, but the f12 key ejects discs (it sits next to the eject button, so perhaps this is a wiring error?), and the caps lock key does not always work when hitting it - it needs a large amount of pressure. I would think that my keyboard was defective, but I just exchanged it yesterday, and the new one has the same problems. I'm getting close to just giving up and getting a refund.

Hello - thank you for the quick responses! To answer your question, yes, I have repaired my permissions and restarted, to no avail.
I have looked through the keyboard prefs quite a bit, and cannot find anything that allows me to choose where to map the sound keys. I have checked "Use All F1 F2 etc keys as standard function keys". In the small aluminum keyboards, the f keys are dual-function - in this case, the f10-f12 keys also control dashboard, etc, which I have turned off (but I have tested the keys with these options both off & on, with the fn key, without the fn key, etc - tried lots of combinations). I've tried quite a few things to get these keys to work. Honestly, the f1-f4 keys don't seem to work at all either.
I might try and take a video later today to show you what I mean. The caps lock key is the biggest thing that's bothering me - I use it instead of shift to type, and 75% of the type it does not activate when pressed...I would think this was just one bogus keyboard if it weren't for the fact that I already exchanged it once...

  • Satellite Pro A10 - some keys not working with new keyboard

    Hi all
I hope some1 can help with this
i have a Satellite Pro A10. The prob i have is a.b.n.and enter keys are not working and its a new keyboard
i fitted into my other A10 and all keys work so keyboard is fine.
All works ok with usb keyboard. Had motherboard out all seems ok.
    Any help plz
    chris....
    Message was edited by: widgy

    Hi
Why do you think that the motherboard is ok?
Maybe its a keyboard controller issue
Did you check if the cable was connected properly?
In my opinion if you are 100% sure that the keyboard is ok then the issue must be related to the motherboard because there is no other part which is placed between the keyboard and mobo.
    Bye

  • How can I restore my keyboard to factory settings? (some keys not working on new unit)

I bought an HP dv6-6167cl last night from Sam's Club and I like the notebook but for some reason the right shift key - ( a longer shift key with both "Pause" and "Shift" written on the key) does not work at all. I'm trying to determine if this is a driver or system configuration issue or if I need to exchange the computer for a different one. It may even be user error - is there some sort of trick to using this shift key? (function toggle or something)
    This question was solved.

Try to backup your personal files and perform a recovery which would put the Notebook back to factory condition. The instructions can be found below

I have spent 20 minutes loging on in order to complain about my MacBook Pro underLeopard.
1 the keypad is capricious. It changes the location of the cursor when I use certain keys, especially capitals. This happens all the time in Mail and Gmail.
2 the trackpad is UNUSEABLE when connected to a projector. This happen often and i have to reboot to recover. A mouse works however.
That is about all not much but these probelms did not exist on the old model. The eradict trackpad is annoying and the keyborad not working are both exteemely annoying.

  • FN key not working on Apple Wireless Keyboard

EDIT: Found the culprit: USB Overdrive was taking over the external keyboard. After disabling USB Overdrive for the keyboard, the FN key started working again.
I have Macbook Air (Mid 2013) connected to a Cinema Display and Apple Wireless Keyboard. MBA is running the latest Yosemite (10.10).
I tried using FN + Delete on the wireless keyboard to forward delete but it didn't work, it just deleted. I tried other keyboard shortcuts that require the use of FN key, and none of them work either. But when I try these directly on the MBA's keyboard, the FN key works perfectly there, just not on the wireless keyboard.
I've removed the bluetooth keyboard and tried reconnecting, restarting computer, login out and back in. Nothing works. Anyone have any ideas?
Message was edited by: Isko Salminen

I disabled "Any Keyboard, Any Application" and "Any Other, Any Application" but I still could not use my Fn key on my Apple Wireless Keyboard. Uninstalling (removing the driver) restored Fn key functionality. In addition downgrading from 3.1 to 3.0.2 on Yosemite also solved this issue.
Did you actually try what you wrote?
I should also note that the Fn key on my rMBP's internal keyboard works with 3.1, oddly enough, but the Apple Wireless Keyboard's Fn key does not.

  • T440s: some keys not working after a few drops of water

Recently I spilled a few drops (literally) of water on my T440s' backlit keyboard. Right now, as far as I know, the following keys are not working anymore: Y, T, BACKSPACE, TAB, CAPSLOCK and left SHIFT. According to the information Lenovo gave me, the keyboard can handle about 10 liters of water so I'm not sure if water is the cause. But if not, it would be quite the coincidence.
Can somebody advise me what to do?
