Some major Leopard annoyances (mainly related to external drives)....

Okay, I have some real pet peeves with Leopard....
1. Repairing permissions takes FOREVER.
2. I can't unmount external drives from the Finder window. I click the little eject icon, but nothing happens. Also, dragging the drive to the trash does nothing. The only I can disconnect them is to use Disk Utility, which is very annoying.
3. To connect to my AirDisk, I have to physically turn the drive off and back on again. If I eject it, I can't reconnect without restarting it. This is also very annoying, as the drive is in another room.
4. I can't set some folders to use icon view and some to use list view, etc. When I switch in one folder, it changes the view for every folder on the computer (as well as on an external drive).
5. Still no New Tab button in Safari!!! (this is more of a minor pet peeve, but come on Apple..)
I'm using a 17" MBP C2D, by the way. It's not like I'm trying this on something that's barely Leopard compatible. I think I might go back to TIger.

N.2 and N.3 are my problems too. Very annoying.
I hope in a 10.5.1 update very soon.

  • Leopard Won't Boot from External Drive

I'm using an iBook G4 running Mac OS X 10.4.10. I just purchased a Western Digital 320GB eSATA external hard drive to use as an external Leopard boot disk because my internal hard drive does not work (I've been using a 20GB Lacie external hard drive as my boot drive up to now).
I have installed Leopard onto the new external drive using the Leopard install DVD. The installation was successful, and the new external drive mounts on the desktop. In addition, I can see all of its contents, and it appears as a startup disk in the startup disk preference panel. However, when I select it as the startup disk and restart the computer, it will not boot from the new external drive.
    Notes:
    1. The drive is formatted in the Apple Partition Map scheme.
    2. I have pressed "option" during restart, but the drive does not appear.
    3. I have restarted with only the new hard drive connected to the cpu, to no avail.
Am I missing something? Please assist.
    Thanks!

I've been trying all day to boot from my external HD after installing Leopard on both my HD and external HD. I was convinced that my external HD volume wasn't being read and recognized. What I discovered a while ago was that my internal HD volume always shows up at the top of the list on my desktop whether it's the volume running or not!!
When running 10.4.11 and booting from the external HD, the icon for the external HD volume always appeared at the top on the desktop, over the internal HD icon. That's how I could remember which one I was on. That's not happening now. I may have been working on the backup for half the day and not known it.
The only way I'm able to tell for sure which is the active drive is to check the User folder to see whether the House/Home icon appears (the system running) or the name is in text (the system not running).
Is there some way to change that or is it a glitch in Leopard? It's weird!

  • Some iPhoto files won't transfer from external drive to the hard drive.

I had all of my photos on an external drive and I wanted to put them on the hard drive of my iMac.
While copying all of the photos over, some of the files copied as 0 bytes into the "Data," "Originals," and "Modified" folders, but not the same files. So, some images have no thumbnail image in iPhoto (guessing from "Data"), some have no original image, but have a modified image, and some have no image at all (the 0 byte files that are only in "Originals."
The images are all fine on the external drive still.
Any idea of what I can do? Any file I can zap from the library or something to make this work?
    Thanks for your help.

Open the library on the EHD with the Finder as shown in this screenshot
and look in the Masters folder to see if any of the original files have zero bytes? Do not make any other changes/alterations, i.e. look but don't touch.  If you do find zero byte image files  then it's not the copy process that is the culprit but the files are bad to start with.

  • Major problems using DV cam with external drive connected. HELP

I am running Final Cut Pro 5.0.4 and Quicktime Pro 7.0.4 and I want to use one of my external Firewire drives as my scratch disk, and when I connect my Canon GL2 FCP either crashes if it is open, or hangs when trying tro start uo if external hard drives are connected. As I need to use an external to capture to I really need to resolve this A.S.A.P.
Thanks in advance for your reading and replying to my post,
    Sebastian

firewire external hd is a perfectly acceptable medium for capturing footage. it works pretty flawlessly and has little issues or problems
This type of blanket statement really can't be supported in my view.
There are issues with single bus firewire captures.
And many cams, including Canons, don't play well with firewire hard drives on the same bus.
Glad it works for you, but that's doesn't mean it works for everyone.

  • Cannot install Snow Leopard onto external drive

I'm attempting to install Snow Leopard on a second drive, an external bare drive in an Icy Dock enclosure connected to a MacPro (running 10.6.6) via serial port. Apple Disc Utility confirms that the external drive (a Seagate 325gb) has a partition map scheme GUID Partition Table. SMART Status is not supported. Connection Bus reads as SCSI but it's connected with a serial cable.
I'm able to perform the first part of the install by selecting the external drive but when I have to restart and complete the install from the original Snow Leopard disc (10.6), the external drive no longer shows up. I've tried several times and have restarted the Icy Dock external drive enclosure.
    Any ideas? Thank you.

Not necessarily. Use a backup utility so that you can deselect all the data from within your Home folder as well as third-party applications in order to create a bootable disk but without some of the excess. Any of the following should be suitable:
    Backup Software Recommendations
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Install Leopard on external Drive?

I'd like to do what I have always done before when upgrading OSes, which is install Leopard on an external HD whilst I keep my existing Tiger on the internal HD.
This way I get to try out the new system without throwing out the old until I am satisfied the change is actually an "upgrade".
However I have heard this doesn't work with Leopard, you can not run 2 different OSes on the one machine and switch between them at startup.
Is this true? Has anyone tried this for themselves?

You heard incorrectly. Many here have done exactly that which you propose. I have two dual-boot machines - Tiger and Leopard. It does not matter whether the drive is internal or external. The only caveat is that for Leopard to boot on an external drive on an Intel box, the drive must be GUID.
For PPC it must be APS. Other than that, there is no problem.

  • Help needed with formatting an external drive

Like some of you exoerienced problems with my external drive on upgrade to 10.5.5. To cut a long story short, bought a Western Digital 500GB Studio already configured for mac. Backed up with time machine. The drive does not boot on startup of my Intel iMac as its the partition map is APM and not GUID. For some reason, when I access the drive in Disk Utility and select Partition, the Option button is greyed out i.e. read only and therefore I can't select GUID. Any ideas how to resolve this?

You cannot boot from a TM backup in case you did not know that.
In order to re-partition the drive for GUID you must:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Select the number of partitions from the drop down menu. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
Be aware that this is a destructive process and all data currently on the drive will be lost.

  • I-Tunes and and External Drive...Questions!

Hello, starting my music collection seriously for the 1st time and have some questions.
When you use an external drive how does i-Tunes recognize this?
Will it still allow me to browse through everything ( album artwork etc) as if the music was in the i-Tunes music folder or will it just be a bunch of folders listed on a drive.

OK, I am not sure that I can help you.
Have your tried pugging into a differnt usb port, do you have any other usb devices that you could try unplugging.
I wonder if fiddling with the drive letter qould help as in this Apple artcle about another problem relating to incorrect recognition of drives.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499
Are you upto date with all your downloads from your computer manufacturers support site?
Is there any support on the drive manufacturers site? This kind of thing does seem to crop up with external drives sometimes Windows doesn't even recognise them.

  • Unable to write to external drive after drive sleeps

This topic seems to be all over the place. I want to know if there is a fix.
I have a number of external disk drives. They are connected via USB and firewire. About 30% of the time, if a drive has been put in sleep mode and then later awakened, I am unable to write to it. If I try to dismount the drive I get a -50 error that the drive is in use. But that is not true because nothing but the finder is running. If I look the console log there are lots of the following messages.
Dec 6 15:50:43 squid fseventsd[45]: disk logger: failed to open output file /Volumes/Calvary1TB/.fseventsd/63657332a56b8d30 (Invalid argument). mount point /Volumes/Calvary1TB/.fseventsd
    Dec 6 15:50:50 squid UnmountAssistant[1463]:
The drive in question is the CAXM Calvary1TB drive. BTW when I received the Calvary disk drive, I reformatted it OSX journaled with a GUID partition before using it. All my other 8 TB of storage is formatted the same way and I had no problems before Snow Leopard. Anyhow, If I force a dismount, all returns to normal. OR if I disable sleep the drive drives options in the energy saver preferences, the problem disappears. But then none of the drives ever spin down.
Once every 50 or so forced dismounts (it happens a lot), OSX will crash with the kiss of death display.
This problem did not exist in pre Snow Leopard, so obviously changes were made to the file system and not properly tested. Anyone have any idea when this will be fixed.

The drive in question is the CAXM Calvary1TB drive.
Calvary lists this drive series only in its "Windows PC" section at http://www.cavalrystorage.com/pr_index.htm. This could be a problem because different manufacturers use different methods to implement wake-from-sleep (or more generally, energy management features) in the support circuitry of external drives. IOW, there are no universal standards for this, so manufacturers may or may not design their implementations for cross-platform compatibility.
Unfortunately, since Windows PC's dominate the market some manufacturers use energy management methods in some or all of their designs that work reliably only with that platform. For this reason, there is always some risk of unexpected behavior when using external drives not specifically marketed as Mac OS X compatible with a Mac. (This is not a problem with "raw" internal drives directly connected to a Mac's SATA interface because there is no support circuitry involved.)
Since you already have invested in these drives, your best bet is to contact Calvary & see if they can offer a solution. If you are lucky, they may have a firmware updater for the CAXM series that works reliably with Snow Leopard; if not, they may simply tell you not to let the drives sleep, or that they don't support the CAXM series with Macs & you are on your own.

  • Adding new imported songs on iTunes to my Library on External Drive

I have my main iTunes library on an external hard drive. My Mac's iTunes folder only contains the iTunes library file but all my songs are kept and imported on my external hard drive at home.
    My question is:
While at work, I have imported some CDs. As default, since that external drive was not connected, it imports all on the computer's iTunes folder in the HD.
What's the best and easiest way to move these imported songs from the computer's drive to my external? Do I erase them from iTunes while keeping the files and re-open them at home when my external drive is connected so it imports them in the drive? Or do I simply move the song files to the external drive and re-locate them??
Appreciate any help on that. Thanks!

    Ok. Got it.
Just need to copy the files' folders by dragging them to iTunes while my external HD is connected; it will add them in the original library location that I have selected (external) while keeping the library in iTunes intact.
Thanks anyway, it was clearly a stupid issue.

  • File Structure with iTunes on an External Drive

This is an image of the file structure on my external drive that holds all of my iTunes music:
Is this correct, or should I have set it up differently? I am asking since it is differnet the the iTunes file structure on my MacBook Pro and some files will get uploaded to my external drive and others will go onto my MBP,s iTunes Music folder. All of my iPhone/iPad apps, Album Artwork, Mobile Applications. I have Book folders on both drives and the both have books on them.
I should say that I had a major problem a few years ago, which has nothing to do with the above problem, with one of the iTunes updates which disconnected most of my songs from their respective files. I tried a solution a friend sugested, which really messed up the files and now many of the files have different info inside the song files, i.e., Otis Redding as the Artist on a Radiohead track. Or another groups cover for a Beatles album. I have a large library and have gone through slowly and fixed many things, but it is still quite messy and a huge bummer.. As a proud new owner of a Late 2011 MacBook Pro, I would love to be able to have a solution for this as well.
    TIA

Well I just went through the same thing. I had a Lacie Porsche mobile drive at 80GB and changed to a Lacie Rugged 250. I keep all my music on external never local. Not a fan of loading my laptop. Anyways.... I was getting those same errors. I had copied all the itunes library contents from the Porsche drive to the Rugged drive. It took quite some time to transfer so you knew it was working. Then changed in the preferences of iTunes to save in the Rugged drive. If you trashed or deleted any files from the new drive and just put them in the trash without emptying you get that 501 trashes path. I found I had multiple duplicates of songs with the name of the song followed by a 1.mp4a. I think the library.xml file is the key to a clean transfer of music. I think this file is stored locally in your user folder and then it's used to direct to the alternate drive but from what I've read it's the file with all the playlist information and stuff on it. If you find it and move it over to the mobile drive then hold option and boot up itunes then tell it to look for that file on the new mobile I think you'll have no worries. I'm actually gonna try this myself.
You don't want to know how it got it working. I physically opened every music file on the rugged drive to make sure the were all where they were supposed to be. All 70'gb's of music. Never doing that again.

  • ?? external drives/copy large folder issue ??

    Hola;
I am trying to copy my large iTunes library from a 1T Seagate [desktop model]to a new 1T WD drive [portable model]. Both drives are Mac Os Extended (journaled) and verified.
First: I created a new small library on the WD and used "add to library" to bring my songs over from the Seagate. This started out OK, but hung about 3/4 of the way through, and I had to force quit, and restart. Second attempt, same method gave me the same result.
Second: Leaving iTunes out of the process, I dragged my music folder from Seagate to WD, and all went well for the first 3 hours and then it hung. More force quitting and restarting. Second attempt with this method gave the same result. First time I left it overnight and woke up to the failure, second time I kept an eye on it, but no better luck.
The WD was preformatted for Windows, so I used Disk Utility to format it. I used Disk Utility to erase the WD each time before I tried to move so space should not be an issue.
Any ideas on what might be wrong here and how I can get this proces completed are very much appreciated.
Macbook Pro, Mac OS X 10.6.8, Snow Leopard.
    Thanks.

Yes, your target drive is experiencing bad sectors and/or your files your attempting to copy are corrupted in some fashion.
Do this to the external drive, either whole (no data on it or it's backed up to another drive) or Free Space, (just does the empty space)
Reducing bad sectors effect on hard drives
Once that is done to the external drive, attempt your copy again, if it goes through your problems are resolved.
If not, your going to have to copy in portions via the iTunes individual music folders (inside the iTunes folder) until you recieve the "hang" again to identify which files or folder of files is responsible.
The data that is attempting to be copied by the hardware is likely on a failed sector on the original drive, you'll have to revert this file or folder of files from a backup or likely delete it if it fails to copy over.
Hard drives are fragile, so don't move them while they are in operation as the heads strike the platters and can cause issues like this, however sectors can fail later with data on them all on their own.

  • Syncing calendars on a home network with a external drive

I don't know if it has been discussed yet(I'm sure it has somewhere) but what is involved in setting up ical to save it's calendar on the shared external drive, so either computer shows the updated calendar? I just sync my iphone calendar through itunes, and I'd like to see that same ical calendar on my powerbook too(and add to it). It is possible isn't it? Without using additional software? (just to make sure you know, I have Panther on one machine and Tiger on the other. Hopefully that doesn't make a difference here)

I don't think there's a magic button. Portable home folders make sense and OS will manage them, portable portions of home folder is not something OS is responsible for.
    ~/Library/Calendars + symlinks
is what you want and it takes some work. Keep main copy on external and every other copy is only a symlink. There's potential for trouble.
There might be some hidden preference you can manually modify, but it won't be supported, so no complaints if your calendars suddenly disappear.
    There's also this:
    http://osxportableapps.sourceforge.net/p_ical/index.html
    But it looks outdated.
    A later version:
    http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Business/Portable-iCal.shtml
I believe this allows iCal select where to open the calendar files from when iCal is starting up. You might be able to point it to external drive.
