Some menus and folder names displayed in Chinese and some in English

In one application the menu is displayed in Chinese text. switch to another app and menus are in English.
Language default is English.
Also using VLC > Open Files > Browse displays Finder directory with all text in chinese against all icons (home, apps, docs etc).
I have reinstalled osx 2 times now and having real problems cropping up all the time with parameters being reset, parameters ignored.
HELP.
20 years on PC and now 1 month Mac is making me gray.

Do Get Info on the icon for that application, hit the languages tab, and make sure only English is checked. If English not available, reinstall the app.
Also using VLC > Open Files > Browse displays Finder

You might want to ask the people who make VLC about that one, if you haven't already.

Prevent using special characters in file and folder names?

I've recently begun adding windows clients to my network. In doing so, I've found that on my file shares from OS X server, the windows clients are unable to see files and folders which have names containing special characters such as / ? < > \ : * | ”
Unfortunately my accounting department has been creating files with these characters in their names for several years. I would like to find if there is a way to prevent them from using a defined set of characters in the file and folder names to prevent them from "accidentally" doing so in the future.
I've found that by turning off streams support on SMB in OS X server, that my windows clients can at least see that a file or folder should exist, albeit with a corrupted file name. Removing the special characters from these names allows the proper name to become visible and the file accessible.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

and pass it in a url query string. But my issue is not
with an url query string, it's with an actual URL, that is,
the actual name of the directory. It
can't be "ça alors: it's a déjà-vu". But I

that can be used for an actual
directory on the server.

Favorites iView Folder Name displayed

For the Favorites iView from SAP, I am creating a new folder. It appears that the Favorites iView displays the folder description rather than the folder name in the iView when a description is added. However, if you do not type in a description, the folder name displays in the iview. Should it not always display the folder name? EP6 SP2 FP5

I have two ways of looking at files in Finder. The first is a straight listing, the middle of the 3 boxes in the upper left corner of finder. Clicking on the gear, click show view options, and size is an option, check it.
Another way is to click on the left box of the three, which shows icons for the files. Again, click the gear, click view options, and show item info. If a file is a movie, it shows the length, if it's a picture, it shows it's size. However, it doesn't show the size of a program module.

Codecs displayed in Chinese and French ...

For some reason on my MBP, some FCP easy settings codecs are described in Chinese, whilst on my G5 they are sometimes in French. As I am British this is rather annoying!
I have deleted all languages other than English from FCP and my System Prefs are set to English too.
I have trashed preferences (FCP Attic), deleted all the Easy Setups and Custom Setups and replaced them with the English setups directly from the FCS2 install disk (using Pacifist), but I still have some Chinese and French settings turning up!
I have even checked the remaining setup files using Textedit and they all seem to be in English. I can't even locate any of the errant files.
Can anyone help me get rid of these very, very annoying interlopers?

I can understand that concern, X.
Our forums font expert, Kurt Lang, has an interesting online article in which he states:
"Apple has made it nearly impossible to remove critical fonts in Leopard, 10.5. If you attempt to remove protected fonts from the /System/Library/Fonts/ folder, the OS will tell you that you cannot remove the font(s) and replaces them from copies in another location. Sometimes immediately, at other times, after you have restarted. Even if it doesn't immediately replace Lucida Grande, the OS continues to use it from the protected location, preventing you from losing control of your Mac."
Of course, a lot of folks are not using Mac OS X 10.5, so yeah, they should be extra careful with this stuff.

Site Index Portlet and Folder names with quotes

Hi,
I don't know if anyone else has hit this problem with the site index portlet, but it fails to render when the page group contains a page with a quote >'< in the page name.
This is an issue particularly using O Drive and 10.1.4 portal, as the page name and page display name both get set to the folder name & windows alows quotes in folder names.
The portlet code escapes the display name, but not the page URL. In 10.1.4 the URL has the page name in it, including any quotes, so the URL needs to be escaped too.
This is achieved by modifying the code in site_index_tree.process_tree. Have a look how l_title_enc is set & do the same for the l_link value. l_link_enc := replace(l_link, '''', '\''');

to avoid this problem I'm afraid that you have to avoid quotes from your pages names.
Quotes in URL are not supported by navigators so you can't use them for pages names (but,as you said you can use for display names).
A possible workaround is to modify the render_tree method, replacing URL by permanent links.
Your url http://myportal/page/portal/page/apage/anotherpage/namewithquote will be replaced by something like :
http://myportal/page/portal/page/54564F654SD5F4SD56F4SD564FS

Why are my file and folder names changing randomly? (Appending Dates)

Recently Finder has taken to randomly (it seems) appending the date to various folder and file names. For example today I dragged a file from Destop into Documents folder and the file name changed immediately after the move:
From: wedding-invite.pdf
To: wedding-invite 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013 12/11/2013.pdf
This has happed to folder names as well with different amounts of replication and different dates (usually today's date or document creation date). It happens to some files and folders but not to others. Those that it does happen to have no UNDO trail for the particular action (like Undo Move for example).
Very frustrating - any assistance would be appreciated.
I am running nothiong special (I do run Google Drive on my iMac). Also Time Machine.

Smart collection and folder names with "_"

I have problems when making Smart Collections based on folder names
My folder name is 2009_11_20 Mist
When I make a Smart collection with "Folder" Stars with 2009
I get a lot of files
When I change the 2009 to 2009_11 I get no files. Even when I make 2009_ I get no files
When I change the 2009 to Mist and the "Starts with" to "Contains" again I get the desired files.
When I change the 2009 to 2009_11 and the "Starts with" to "Contains" again I get no files.
It seems that LR with Smart Collections cannot handle the "_" character???
Who can help?

It's a bug. The usual workaround is to use hyphen as the separator in your folder names instead of an underscore.

Mp3 CDs and Folder Names

Hey all.
Does anyone know if it's possible to burn an mp3 cd using iTunes with different folder names? ie: Different folders for different artists.
Also, any idea how to do this in a manner so that an mp3 capable stereo will display the folder names?
If not iTunes, any other software?

Issue with recieving long SMS and Caller Name display

Hi,
Im new to the blackberry and have looked around other forums & technical centre and havn't found any way to solve my issues although i did find something about caller id problems.
1) When people send me long SMS i.e over 160 characters long i keep recieving them in separate SMS and it becomes very confusing... i have owned over 7 different phones in the past and this has never been a problem. Is there any way to solve this?
2) Quite often when someone calls me, i only seem to be able to see the callers number and not the Name, this is frustating as i have no idea who is ringing.

It helps to give ALL the details of yoru device, such as your OS release on the device and your carrier as well.
1. Verizon blocks combined SMS over 160 characters on their BlackBerrys. You should fuss at them. Other carriers don't do this. An alternative for you is the application called "Beyond160", find it in AppWorld.
2. There could be any one of three solutions... Try these:
a. Make sure you set your own country code at Phone Dialer Screen > Options > Smart dialing.
Set your country code in this format: "+xx" where xx = your country code. Some countries have two or three digit Country Codes. Do not place the '+' in your contact's entry.
* In the US, set this Country Code as "+1", and place your loca area code in the proper box (this normally the default setting in a new BB).
b. At the same location, change the National Number Length to the number of digits for your country (since some countries will have less than 10 as set as the default in the BB). Find out the total digits, minus the country code. Do not place the '+' in your contact's entry.
* For example, some countries have a total number to 8 (plus 3 for country code). You would enter "8".
c. You may have "Content Protection" set on your Address Book.
Look at Options > Security > General Settings. Scroll down to Content Protection > Include Address Book = NO.

Bi Dashboards issue works properly some times and after not display pointers data and give un expected error and throw login window

I have toff situation where we deployed bi dashboards in our site and it works some time and some times not,
and some times it keep loading and throw a login window.
works when
we restart performance point service and if not work
we re create secure store service and generated new key and create new pps service application
before that we stopped secure store and pps service using c.a in application server
we are using ssas for datasource to connect from dashboard designer
we have seperate server for ssas dbs
seperate application server running: pps service and secure store service
two web front ends: one of running secure store
1 Domain controller + central admin service running
some times after 4 -5 hours bi dashboards works , we dashboards not display data and throw un expected errors,
also when we try to connect using a dashboard designer from a seperate client machine in same domain ,we have same issue , we unable to connect to ssas datasource server, and if connect some times unable to deploy dashboards.
we tried every thin icreased server time out values in ssas server

Installed mac installer.dmg Seagate GoFlex and drive and file names now in Chinese characters

I just installed the mac installer.dmg from Seagate on a second Mac so that I could use Seagate GoFlex drive with the computer, but now the drive shows up with its name and the file names in Chinese characters! Connecting the drive to the original mac has the drive show up named properly but a few of the files show up in Chinese characters. What gives?

I should add that these are the instructions I received from Seagate in answer to the same inquiry. I have not yet gone to work to give them a try.
