Some missing and corrupt IPTC metadata on export

As a Lightroom user I'm trying Aperture 3, I may be missing something or failing somewhere...
I've imported some RAW files which already have IPTC metadata, captions, copyright, keywords etc. On export the copyright field has corrupted, the symbol © becomes ¬© and a few fields are missing. I don't have a date, rights usage and the image is marked as unknown copyright status.
All of that data (except copyright status) appears in Aperture so I'd expect to see it in an exported JPEG. Everything appears as I expect when making a JPEG from Lightroom.
Thanks for any comments or advice.

As a matter of fact, it doesn't export costum filds at all.
By definition, custom fields are non-standard, and therefore aren't included in the exported file as they won't mean anything to other software. This has been the case since Aperture 1.0 and has absolutely nothing to do with other metadata problems.
Your website will likely be reading IPTC tags so if you want the information to be readable you'll have to find some appropriate IPTC tags to store the information in.

  • Missing file number suffix metadata when exporting

    Hello All,
I export files from Lightroom 2 (LR2) using custom filenames that include file number, i.e. "Original number suffix", metadata. This metadata is not being picked up by the export module and will therefore not be included in the exported filename. This happens with files that have been edited in Photoshop (CS3), but not with the original DNG files.
So if I have a master file named "Davison-20080809-1234-Master.psd", I in Lightroom 1.x (LR1) I set up a custom filename scheme in the export dialogue box that will export the master as "Davison-20080809-1234-BW-Web.jpg", or similar. This has worked with no problems to date.
In LR2, when I look at the Example field under File Naming in the Export dialogue, I see only "Davison-20080809-BW-Web.jpg"--the original number suffix is missing along with one of the hyphens around it. When I create a custom file naming scheme with only the "Original filename suffix" metadata in it, it shows "_.jpg" in the Example field.
It looks like maybe two things are happening.
In LR1, if a piece of metadata was missing, it would still export a filename with all the hyphens around the missing data, so I would get "Davison-20080809--BW-Web.jpg" if the number suffix were missing. Someone probably tweaked that in the new version of Lightroom so that the unsightly double hyphenation would not appear. So this doesn't look like it's related to the problem.
The second thing that appears to be happening is that Lightroom 2 is either not exporting (in file metadata) or not tracking (in the LR catalogue) the number suffixes. I've looked for the number suffix in Photoshop's metadata and it's not stored in the metadata at all. When I copy a Photoshop file with a suffix that does export correctly in LR2, rename the file "Test-20080809.psd" and import it into LR2, Lightroom parses the date (YYYYMMDD) as the number suffix and "20080809" is what I get when I export that file. This indicates that LR1 and LR2 store the number suffix in the catalogue and for some reason LR2 is not preserving the number suffix in the catalogue metadata when a file is edited in Photoshop.
So has anyone else run into this problem? Or is someone interested in reproducing it? It looks like a bug to me.

I'm also running into this same problem. For what it's worth, when I import my RAW files (as DNGs), I rename them using a naming scheme which looks like the following:
    (2008-08-13) -019- (7108).dng
This scheme is created with the following elements (separated by line-breaks):
    custom date formula
    import number
    original file suffix
In Lightroom 1, I had no problem. Now, I'm wondering if the parenthesis after the end of the file suffix is what's causing Lightroom 2 to think that there is no suffix?

  • Embedding IPTC Metadata without Exporting

Does anyone know of a way to write the IPTC data (keywords, descriptions, etc) to the actual file without exporting from Aperture. The problem with exporting is that I have about 20,000 photos, all with keywords, scattered around many folders. If I export, I either need to export one folder at a time (there are hundreds) to preserve the project/folder structure or I need to export them all and loose the folder structure.
Am I correct about this assumption?
Any suggestions for how to either preserve the structure during an export or change the IPTC information in the original file without exporting?
Will synching up to Flickr write the metadata to the file?

yes. use the metadata inspector>IPTC-Expanded. select the photo and input the information into it.
you can also select at the bottom of the metadata inspector "IPTC" make sure "Hide Empty Tags" is deselected and check the ones you want to see on your list. if you don't see what you want in the list you can also make your own
EDIT: you can also rearrange the order of the items listed by dragging them up or down
or download the different protocol lists from
    http://www.iptc.org/cms/site/index.html?channel=CH0086
    and import them into aperture

you can always do a query search in your library and export the group of photos according to the search input to it's own folder (you can make at export). for example, city, byline, into a folder

see above or when exporting select "edit" and "Include Metadata" this will export your IPTC info with the photo

not sure but there is a buggy plugin for this (hasn't worked for me):

  • Missing and Corrupted Photos?

When I view photos on a connected iPhone 4 (iOS 4.0.1) in either Image Capture or Aperture, I see only a few photos (instead of the dozens on the phone), and those that I do see cannot be copied to the desktop (I get a corrupted file error).
Is anyone else seeing this? Is there a fix?

    Ah, never mind:
The OS (as seen in ImageCapture and Aperture, at least) was still somehow "connected" to my old iPhone (which is not even in the same room). Rebooting the desktop fixed the problem.

  • How do I fix missing and corrupted images after update to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and Aperture 3.4?

Last night I tried to update to Aperture 3.4 on my MacBook Pro (late 2007 / 3,1 model) and received a message that I needed to install Mountain Lion 10.8.2 first.  However, there was no update in my App Store account for 10.8.2.  The update for 10.8.2 appeared above the Aperture 3.4 update after I restarted the laptop and rechecked for updates.  I proceeded to update Mountain Lion and then Aperture.  Everything seemed to be working fine so I opened Aperture 3.4 and watched it update the database without any issues...
Upon examining the small library (of approximately 1200 images totaling about 8 GB) that I leave on this MacBook Pro specifically for testing Aperture updates, I observed the following:
I know anything can happen with stored images, so I try to create redundancy by duplicating important photos on import to an external device, running Time Machine backups and keeping memory cards stored away until I am comfortable with the integrity of the first 2 methods.  I am not really worried about this specific Aperture Library on this laptop because it has become my "laboratory" for testing new updates before we apply them to our other computers.
In general, I try not to be too early of an adopter when it comes to software and updates--even though I have had remarkably few problems with Apple updates in the past.  However, my success rate with Apple's products and "feature curiosity" occasionally leads me to update early!  It is my curiosity that, again, has me wondering:  What went wrong and how can I fix this in case it happens to something important in the future?

I still don't know what happened to my test Aperture Library after the update to 3.4...Not only were my previews lost, but so were the original images!  Needless to say, I haven't bothered to update the main library on the Mac Pro because I don't want to deal with this level of uncertainty (even with backups in place).

  • Themes missing and corrupted for iBooks

Like others, I suddenly have only three themes for books, despite having previously creted books saved in other themes. Most odd is going to the large format book options, where I have two different themes--and everything is in Italian. I recently reinstalled iPhoto 8, had to delete my preference (*.plist) files, in order to get slideshows working. Now slideshows work but my book themes are toast. HELP. I don't want to go through yet another reinstall.

You'll need to do the following:
    Restoring iPhoto Themes
First look in your User/Library/Application Support/iPhoto folder for a Themes folder. If you find it there move it to the HD/Library/Application Support/iPhoto folder and reboot. Then try iPhoto again. That may save you having to go thru the reinstallation process described below:
1 - delete the current application.
2 - delete any files with iPhoto in the file name that reside in your HD/Library/Receipts folder.
3 - delete the Themes folder from your User/Library/Application Support/iPhoto folder. Also look in the HD/Library/Application Support/iPhoto folder for a Themes folder. If there is one there then delete it also.
4 - mount the system disk that came with your computer, double click on the "Install Bundled Software Only" file and do a custom install selecting only iPhoto.
After installing reinstall the latest iPhoto updater again followed by a repair of disk permissions with Disk Utility. Also make sure you're running the latest Quicktime version.

  • Can I choose what metadata is exported?

I'd like to export photos with some metadata (copyright, date, etc...) but not with others (camera model, lens model, etc...) Is there some way to control what metadata is exported with a file?

You do not have much control over that.
You cannot prevent the export of the EXIFmetadata tags. They will be exported with originals or edited versions, since they are stored in the original image file.
When you are exporting original files, you can disable the export of IPTC metadata, for the edited versions these data will be included.
Also, in the Preferences > Advanced panel is an option, to enable/disable the export of location data with the images.
One way to prevent the export of certain IPTC data would be to simply duplicate all versions to exported, collect the duplicates in an album, and flag them,so you can easily recognize them again. Then batch change all duplicates of the image versions and erase the metadata tags that you do not want to export. Export the edited duplicates and delete them afterwards again.
This will only worrk for the IPTC tags; to prevent the export of EXIF tags you would need to clear the EXIF tagswith exiftool or a similar tool. Aperture will not allow to change them.

  • Category and Supplemental Category are missing from Photoshop CC 2014 File Info IPTC metadata

Photoshop CC 2014.0.0 is missing the File Info IPTC metadata fields Category and Supplemental Category. Is there a way to restore them? The new interface to all the IPTC fields is much less flexible—they cannot be rearranged or hidden as in Photoshop CC 14.x

  • IPTC Metadata Editor with Spellcheck and more

Bridge and Lightroom could benefit from a robust metadata editor. Quality IPTC data is almost as important as the images themselves. Afterall that's how we and our clients will find our valuable images.
    Desired Features:
Spellcheck of at least Description and Keyword fields
Thesaurus would be great for creating Keyword sets
More flexible keyword sets to allow more nesting and organizing of similar keywords
Autofill searching of previously used keywords
    Desired Functionality:
Must be fast and dependable. Currently Bridge is pretty slow, writing one keyword at a time. This seems to cause Bridge to hang up on itself and spit out corrupt files or not apply metadata to random files among a large selection.
Perhaps it would be better to have the enter all metadata additions and changes at once to all selected files and hit update, append or replace. FotoStation has had a useful interface in which the user can opt to replace and/or append and/or leave alone various metadata fields all at once.
Currently it is difficult to resolve a large selection of files that all should have the same keyword(s) but some already have it. We are forced to first remove the keywords(s) by pressing the minus sign, wait for that to happen and then reenter the keyword(s). This can be painfully slow for a large batch of files. I've often resorted to manually writing a metadata template in Wordpad an appending the template. It needs to be easier than that.

The IPTC metadata needs a large amount of work across all the Adobe product line.
    Desired Functions:
(1)The identical fields/names and consistent characteristics across all products that generate end-user files; for example, Audition (audio), Acrobat (PDF), Photoshop (image), video products and so on. Audition 1.5 still carries the RIFF metadata but no IPTC format data. Acrobat 7.0.7 Pro does have some IPTC like data fields but has a major data integrity problem with the Description field data. In Photoshop CS2, I can utilize CR/LF via "Enter" to make the presentation more readable as separate paragraphs or new line items. In the Acrobat "Description" field I can follow the same procedure and all looks good upon entry. I do a Save and then bring up the IPTC Description data (same file) and all the data after the first CR (Enter) is lost! Never received any error or warning message.
    (2) I think this pertains mostly to generation of PDF files. Currently, when I generate a PDF document having the same location/file-name that I designate for the "new" file, I appropriately get the warning about the "same name". In addition, give me the option to have the metadata in the "old" file copied to the "new" file.
    (3) Publish (at least in the Help function) all the idiosyncracies for each field (e.g., can I not do CR/LF functions?) and the maximum number of characters possible in each field. Please don't reference me to some standard for the information....tell me what the product line supports! In addition, generate warning messages if I do something outside the field support at the time I am entering data in the field. When possible include such information alongside the field window. One example of this is the note below the keyword window about the comma seperator. The problem with this particular comment is that is states "the comma MAY be used as a separator". Don't tell me what MAY be used...tell me what CAN be used (e.g., spaces, semi-colon, etc.).
    (4) Major update required in the Help function for metadata. Right now it is very poor and not of much use.

  • Missing caption metadata in Export Version

I have a new Canon SX260. When I export version from Aperture 3.3.2, caption info isn't included in the exported file. Location and EXIF are included. Exported versions from my older Canon S2IS and from my iPhone do have caption info.  I can export the metadata into a text file OK. Export preset has "include Metadata" checked. I would expect that Aperture creates a new JPEG with space for all the metadata even if the original file didn't have the space.  Any suggestions to getting the caption included in the exported version?

In a separate thread, this solution was provided.  Now all the captions that I exported show up int he caption field when I re-import the photos.
Re: Exports Don't Include IPTC/Copyright Info
Nov 8, 2012 6:39 AM (in response to jas)
I had jpg (not raw) images in Aperture from both a Nikon D5100 and a Nikon AW100. I added captions to the images and then exported them as jpegs. The D5100 jpgs show the caption under Preview, the AW100 jpg do not.
I found a work-around using the free program exiftool (google it) and Terminal.
In terminal I changed to the folder which contained my AW100 images and then entered this command to re-write all the IPTC data.
    exiftool -iptc:all= -tagsfromfile @ -all:all -unsafe  ./

I received an online gift card for Father's Day.  When I tried to redeem the gift then I received a error message saying I had some itune files missing and I needed to reinstall/download itunes.  Will I still have my previous purchase credits after downloading and reistalling itunes?

You will, because the credited funds are on your iTunes account, not the application. When you reinstall iTunes just configure it with your old iTunes account and your credits will be there waiting for you.

    Hi there,
You're running an old version of Safari. Before troubleshooting, try updating it to the latest version: 6.0. You can do this by clicking the Apple logo in the top left, then clicking Software update.
You can also update to the latest version of OS X, 10.8 Mountain Lion, from the Mac App Store for $19.99, which will automatically install Safari 6 as well, but this isn't essential, only reccomended.
Thanks, let me know if the update helps,

Sorry Mark, you are out of luck as it does not do that - it works the same as L8. The way I would achieve that with more accuracy and control would be to route all the tracks you want to fade to a Bus then use volume automation on the bus. To do this you will need to add a standard audio track, then re-assign it using (Control Click on the track header) to the Bus track. You can then automate volume/plugins etc on the Bus track.
