Some movie imports are Squashed! Why?

I extracted the same scene/chapter from a dvd VOB in two different formats - MP4 and DV. When viewed in Quicktime they are displayed correctly at identical sizes with a ratio of 4:3 which was the ratio of the original.
However, when they are imported into iMovie 5 only the MP4 displays and plays correctly. The DV file has been squashed to what appears to be the 16:9 ratio, but it does NOT show any more image at all, it has identical content to the original and the MP4 but is merely squashed down.
Any ideas out there? Thanking you in advance,

I think you'll find those are the ones that are unchecked in iTunes.

HELP! Some photos imported are viewable only as small thumbs

Some photos imported into the library are showing small thumbs only. Others have imported fine, even during the same import. They are not editable (showing dashed squares), they are not transferable via email, printing, or in the finder, and are showing as all black in slideshow. In the finder, the folder (roll name) shows, but not the images inside the folder, and the folder is only 8k in size. Also, when scaling the size of the thumb in the folder (roll) in iphoto the problem images do not scale past a very small size. The info window in iphoto says there are 84 photos at 168 mb. How can I recover these photos?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Where were these photos that you imported into the library, in an older iPhoto Library folder?
Also, open the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder and check the Originals folder. In it should be year folders containing sub folders for each roll in the library. See what size those files are and if you can open them in Preview. DO NOT rename or move them.

Movies imported are non in the "Events" anymore

Hi All,
yesterday I captured from my DV camcorder a user group event directly to iMovie.
Everything was fine, and I imported everything directly to an external USB2 disk, and that was cool.
But now I've to cut and edit the recording and I'm facing a strange problem: the .dv files are in the folder on the disk, together with all the post-processing done by iMovie "iMovie Cache" and "iMovie Thumbnails", but the events don't contain the movies.
To make the thing seems even stranger, if I select any "Open File" dialog, go to Movies, and I open the "iMovie events" item, I can see all the events and their content.
Any idea of how I can solve this problem? Otherwise I'll not be able to use the movie to make the final cuts and produce the output.

The events are seen by iMovie, but not the contents.
Looking on the forum I found a workaround:
I renamed the folder with the event, and then iMovie recreated all the thumbnails for the movie, it took a bit of time, but now I've my movie showing in the event library.
Seems like it can be a problem with the cache of iMovie.

Problem importing some .MOV files into Premiere Elements 11

Hello,
I am trying to import film footage into Premiere Elements 11 and am coming across a rather confusing problem. All of the footage is in .mov format and all of it was taken on the same device on the same day with the same settings.
When I try to import the footage, some files import ok, others will not import at all and I get a message saying 'The importer reported a generic error'. It seems very odd to me that some .MOV files are OK and others are not.
This same footage can easily be imported into Premiere Elements 10 and into Windows Movie Maker - which makes me think the issue is with Premiere Elements 11.
Does anyone have any ideas on this?

What model of camcorder is your video coming from and what format and resolution is it? Did you use Premiere Elements to get the video from the camcorder to your computer?
Have you ensured you have the latest version of Quicktime installed on your computer?

Please understand I am a frustrated customer like you, , but the availability of movies that have been shown before is dependant on licencing from the rights owners. Sky quite rightly have to pay the film studios for the ability to show to Sky's customers. As I understand it they purchase the right for a period of time, hence when the right expires then it has to be removed. The costing of the movies does reflect on the anticipated popularity of the programme, hence an older less popular movie might seem expensive but if not many people watch and pay that would be right. The apparent silliness of having movies in the store and on demand, allows those people who do not have a movie subscription to rent the movie on a one off basis. I agree that Sky seem to be licencing some programmes for shorter periods and it really upsets me when movies appear in buy and keep but not available to rent only. I recently queried Sky about Fortitude being available in OnDemand until 2022!, then of course found out that Sky owns the rights of the series. I can only say be careful if you are a movies subscriber and wish to watch a movie, not to select the Sky Store version if it is available in the Movies on Demand section. I recently wanted to watch a film that I found in Sky store at a cost, and just to be sure I searched for it and found it was to be shown on Channel 4 in a few days. I don't think we'll ever understand how such decision are made as to how long they licence movies for and how the charging model works with the film studios. Logically you would think that a smallish fee to have available indefinately and to pay the studio fee based on the number of rentals would be better, but that might be difficult to administer and Sky would have to have extra server storage fees, which they outsource. Hi guys, I've been given some .mov files to use. When I play them I can hear the audio but the pictures are green. The client says they play for him. I am on mac 10.5.8 and FCP 6.0.6. Any clues as to why this is happening?

I've been told this happened to somebody else last week, but didn't get a resaon why.
Any clues as to why this is happening? I suspect it's a codec issue of some sort

Why won't some movies get imported from camera?

I'm using iPhoto 6.0.6 with Panther, and a USB camera (PowerShot AS7100IS). Everything works great except for one thing: some movies I make with the cameras aren't seen by iPhoto and never imported. I have to do it with Image Capture utility, which is annoying. Does anyone know why this happens - what determines whether it sees the AVIs on the camera or not?

Size is the usual issue. iPhoto will baulk at importing large videos directly from a camera.

They will not play because they are protected.
You likely bought them before itunes + (drm free music).

Are you in a country where films can be redownloaded - the page that you posted from should list countries and where the different content types can be redownloaded. But even if you, not all countries have agreed to allow their films be redownloaded, and there is no guarantee that a film (or any other item) will remain in the store, so you shouldn't rely on being able to redownload them. You also can't add films and/or tv programmes to the cloud, whether an item appears there depends upon your country, the film studio, and if it remains in the store.

HT1551 why does my Apple TV say that some movies purchased through iTunes are not authorized to play on the Apple TV (1st gen)

Why will my Apple TV (1st gen) not allow me to play some movies even though they were purchased in the iTunes store? I have sync'd the movies to my Apple TV and there is plenty of room on the drive. I get the error message that says this movie is not authoriezed for play on the Apple TV. Thanks. Ron

Have you purchased anything on the Apple TV recently, next time you make a purchase, try making it on the Apple TV.

The latest .key I created is huge, .... Finder shows it as 5GB. Other .key of similar slide total are about 300-500MB. There is nothing different about this one. It is just .jpg files (photos) and text. No movies, no audio. Why so big??

iMac. 2.4GHz. Core 2 Duo. 2GB SDRAM. OS - 10.9.5.   Keynote - 6.2.2 v.1878.
I just completed a keynote slide show. The Finder indicates it is 5.25GB. It is 200 slides, no movies, no audio of any kind, no special transitions. It is just photos and some added text explanations. The individual photos are each 5-6MB, with about 190 photos total. I have other previous .key's about the size in terms of the number of photos and they are showing in the Finder as taking up 300-500MB. There is nothing different with this one particular presentation. I usually organize and store my photos using .key after a trip. Photos are downloaded into iPhoto (7.1.5) and then I build a keynote presentation by copying the photos as .jpg's out of iPhoto and into Keynote, with text as notes on or under each photo. Something changed with the latest keynote in terms of file size. But I can't determined why it required 5.25GB of disc space while other .key's of the approximate same size and content are only taking 10% of that amount. Anyone have an idea what is going on with keynote is this particular instance??? I know I could compress it, but I want to understand why the last time I used keynote the file size was so huge.    Thanks for the help.

Some additional information. In looking at the package contents info, under the DATA Folder there are several entries for each slide/photo in the .key presentation. There is a long list of contents that shows each image as:
    pasted-image-1234.png
and a second list right below that identifies each image again in the .key as:
    pasted-image-small-1234.png
Both of these lists show image files of 15-25MB for each photo, even though the original .jpg photo was 4-6MB. They list/show all of the images in the .key, but DO NOT show the added text. So it appears the package contents indicates two separate .png files for each photo in the .key, but the file size for each is 3-5 times greater than the original .jpg that was copy/pasted from iPhoto. And for some reason there are two copies of each.
There is also a list for the two following image/data files:
    pasted-image-small-small-1234.png
    st12-1234.png
Both of these lists show a file size of 100-200KB for each image, and again show all of the images in the.key.
Only the st-xx-xxxx.png list of images also show the added text.
Again it appears when I created the Keynote presentation by copy/paste images from iPhoto, Keynote stored multiple copies of each image as .png file several times larger than the original .jpg.   The completed Keynote slide show is so large is almost impossible to work with. The system is so slow that routine commands are not completed, e.g., trying to "save as" into a .pdf never finishes and I have to "force quit".
Still trying to determine why this occurred with the 6.2.2 version. Any chance I can delete all but the st-xx-xxxx image list and get back to a normal file size??

Look under system preferences on the mac at what is be controlled? Look at Mail, Contacts, Calendars. How many accounts are managing contacts? Just the cloud? the cloud and gmail? or cloud, gmail, yahoo, and exchange? If you have more than one contact account, then you will have different contact lists, if John Smith shows up in more than one of your contact lists, you will have multiple entries.
Pick a contact list that is your master, (I use iCloud), only turn on contact syncing for it. The same for your phone. Spend some time on the iCloud webset (www.icloud.com) and work on your contact list there. Clean it up, remove duplicates, etc...Changes will auto sync back to all your devices. Life gets much simplier.
Just remember, if you sync different contacts lists and a large number of people appear in your different lists, then they will appear as duplicates.

Iphoto imports some movies ok..but not all????

iPhoto imports everything but some movie clips I've taken come up as .mov files and others as (poor quality) jpgs?
Why? Whats going on?

It displays a thumbnail of a .jpg and not a .mov.
You click on it and you get an enlarged version, just a poor quality photo.
This only happens SOMETIMES.
One movie may be imported as a .mov (with the correct info on iphoto page); ie: double click gets you what you want.
The next one may not and is just the dodgy .jpg.
Any clues????

Iphoto unable to import some jpeg files... why???

Am trying to import some photos from a friend. They are jpeg format on a CD which was created at the photo developing lab when he got his films developed. Have tried importing them one at a time, all at once, by copying, by "adding", by dragging... I'm out of ideas. I keep getting a message that says the files are either "unrecognized file type" or "may not contain valid data." However, I can open them in Preview, in photo editing software, etc. Any ideas?

I am not sure why you can't import them. Why don't you open them all in Preview and then save them. Make sure the extension is added to the file name when saved. Next try importing them.

Flash CS4: why movie clips are static when exporting to video formats ?

Does anyone know why the movie clips are non animated when I export my flash animation into a video format ?

You must need a suitable codec for that like DivX codec, it will also import the nested movieclip animations. otherwise whatever you have on the main timeline is exported for avi. you will get the codec on the export settings for avi.
