Some new messages are highlighted in red

I have received 2 or 3 messages lately that show up in my inbox highlighted in fire truck red. I'm not saying the message is listed in a red font. It's like a red color label has been applied and I'm not sure how it got there. It's not as a result of an action taken by applying a rule; I don't have any rules except the one Apple put it there by default to highlight their messages. How do I disable that? Does Mail handle priority labels sent my other mail apps by applying a color label?

William, I have limited experience of this kind of happening but I do know that my ISP can highlight any email that has possible problematic content. Here in Australia there are government regulations concerning spam & emails with certain words in the message. I've had a couple of emails coloured as a warning that I should be careful.
I suggest you check with your ISP whether or not this is what has happened.

Make sure People Sending you via iMessage are sending their messages on your PHONE number not on your EMAIL addresses . My sister had the same problem, thats how i managed to solve it!

In Contacts, I don't have any duplicates, but in iMessage contacts on iMac in Mountain Lion, the contacts it provides for a new message are all doubles. Why and how can I fix? Thx.

I also notice that each contact says iCloud in it twice, but when I go to iCloud.com, there are no duplicates either. Help..

Try Contacts>Preferences...>Accounts...remove {-}/re-add {+}your iCloud account.
If that is not successful, follow the steps listed in iCloud: Troubleshooting iCloud Contacts.

In Apple Mail, my new messages are coming in without the blue dot, as if the messages have already been read. Why? Has my computer been compromised?

I did not use my laptop all day. This evening, when I looked at my new e-mail from earlier today, only about 3 messages still had the blue dot, that shows on unread mail. I watched new messages come in. One new one came in with the blue (unread) dot, then maybe when the next new message came in, the blue dot disappeared from the first message, but appeared on the new message. The 2 subsequent e-mails came in without any blue dot. I had not highlighted or opened any of those 4 new e-mails, or any of the previously delivered e-mails from today. I cannot find anything in system preferences or in mail preferences that addresses this issue. Anyone know why this is happening? Has my computer been breached or hacked?

Ok, so even thought no one has answered, it appears that once I move mail to the "On My Mac" mailboxes, they no longer exist on the server (though they can be moved back there if desired). Which means that I'm fine if I migrate my hosting to a new server, and redownload them, because the mail in "On My Mac" will be untouched. The only thing I don't know about is the "Sent" mail, but I believe those also exist on the server, and therefore if I migrate them then the link relationships are maintained (no idea about the mail that is "On My Mac" that has links to "Sent" mail in the server, but I guess that isn't so important).
As for keeping a completely syncronizable Mail application - the only way it appears I'd be able to do that is to forgo "On My Mac" entirely, and keep *all* mail on the server. If I want to move mail into different folders, those folders would have to be Server folders created for that account, and hosted by that hosting company. This actually doesn't seem like such a bad move, especially as we get further and further away from having only one device that we use to process Mail.
Are there any disadvantages to *not* using the local "On My Mac" folders? Are there any major advantages to using them?

Some incoming messages are not received in outlook

Using Iphone 4.
Most of the time I receive messages from a POP account on the IPhone and on my Outlook2010 client. Once in a while I receive one or more on the IPhone and they never show up in Outlook.
This is DNSExist Squirrel mail server. The messages are not removed from the server account after they are received by the iPhone. Outlook is setup to remove the messages 1 day after they are received and appears to be doing so.
These messages come from different senders.
The Settings.Mail.Account.Advanced.DeleteFromServer setting is set to "Never".
Some of the messages appear to be flagged as received by IPhone in a way that make Outlook treat them like they have already been received.

I believe that the messages sill show up eventually.
While I've no experience using Outlook with POP3, I have experience with Outlook 2011 on Mac and 2010 on Windows with Microsoft Exchange. Both OS X and Windows Outlook appear to have a bug whereby they defer display of new messages for a seemingly random amount of time (even if you tell it to "Send/Receive Messages" by clicking on the item in the ribbon or from the menu). The messages are on the server, and, if you monitor the messages in the activity bar at the bottom of the Outlook window, it seems to see the messages and transfer them, but they simply don't show up in the application.
Some messages appear immediately, others don't. We've not been able to determine precisely what differentiates those that do and those that don't. Some messages don't appear in Outlook for hours after they post on the server.
This is widely observed throughout the company, and home users report similar behavior (again, I can't tell if they are using POP3 or not).
We've reported the bug to Microsoft.
Your iPhone is doing the right thing. I know of no current fix or work-around for the bug in Microsoft Outlook.

New messages are not bold or blue dotted in mac mail

Just upgraded to Lion in preparation for my new Iphone 4s.
Mail on laptop does not indicate which messages are new and unread. I have checked the "bold if unread" box in preferences with no luck. I then went into classic view and told it to bold new and unread messages with no luck.
What is going on? I am insanely dissapointed.
I've spent the last three days trying to uproot myself from my firm entrenchment in google apps to shift into mac, icloud, ios5, etc.
I can't even tell tell which emails are unread? Think Apple could have figured this one out.
Any ideas anyone?

So I did something from my gmail account that seemed to fix it. Wish I could remember what. Thanks for looking into it as much as you did Glenn!
I am starting to realize, though, that apple is really selling what google has been giving out for free for quite some time now. I am really starting to wonder if I screwed up by buying an iphone and deciding to switch over. I'll never ever buy another pc, but google's running circles around apple on this cloud stuff. Seems like apple wants to charge a subscription for just about everything, and even then requires that what ever you are sharing be created on an ios5 device. Extremely limiting.
Keeping my fingers crossed that the next two years of my contract isn't as counterproductive as this first week.

I've got two 11.2.0.2 environments - one where this is reproducible, one where it doesn't seem to be.
I assume it must be a bug and one of these environments is patched.
I had a quick look at metalink and couldn't see an obvious match.
I might see if I can figure out differences between environments later.
There are a number of bugs around compound triggers.
I've been bitten before with a different compound trigger bug.

Shame - nice way to neaten up multiple triggers but too many issues.

Some new messages or some that I respond to do not go out, and some from others do not arrive. This seems to be a new problem.

I have sent test messages to my self several times today to and from from each of my addresses and they show in my sent folder but do not arrive. Others that I know were sent to me did not arrive. In one case, the same message sent again did arrive. Other mail does arrive, but I now wonder how much I'm missing. I need some help?

if Mail goes to your sent folder without error, Thunderbird has received a "sent ok" from the outgoing server. Your mail is not arriving, time to talk to your service provider. They probably have spam rules and are quarantining your mail somewhere or are simply dropping it as SPAM. There is no guarantee of delivery or of notification of failure in the email protocols and the larger ISPs in the US especially make significant use of that absence in their cavalier spam policies.

Some Sent messages are missing

My wife has noticed that about 5-10% of the emails she sends are not in the Sent folder. When we checked the Console it gives the following error:
Error (null) occurred while trying to append messages to outgoing store. Ignoring and proceeding delivery...
This is using an IMAP mailbox with our hosting company (not mobile me). There is an archived post in these forums with others reporting the same problem - but cannot find a way of fixing it. We have repaired permissions but it didn't help.

well guys, not that I am happy that this happens also to you... but at least I can say that it' is not only my problem, but a common problem.

What is causing a- new message "area/transparent thing" at bottom

I dont know what to call the thing I am seeing on my screen. [please see screenshot.]
It has just started to appear in last 3 days. I upgraded to 34.0.5 and it is still there.
How do I determine why it is now showing or what is causing it to show?
It happens on all web pages. Its like a new style pop up (but i have pop-up option turned OFF) so i dont think its a pop-up as such.
But it appears after a while, It is transparent. Has no information other than a x in a circle and close.
So just annoying to have to keep closing it all the time.

Cant read pages,headings & large type are highlighted in red

When I get to most pages theyre headings and most parts but not all of the type is highlighted in a bright red , making the pages unreadable.

If the background of links is red then that is probably caused by an extension like SEO or SearchStatus that has the option set to highlight noFollow links.<br />
You can check the options of such an extension.<br />
You can click the icon on the Status bar to open the SearchStatus options and un-tick "Highlight NoFollow Links"<br />

AOL and mail some sent messages are not saved

I have been having a problem with sent messages using mac mail and my aol account. Occasionally the message will get hung up and will take a long time to send. The send progress bar fills up and the message is eventually sent, but it is not copies to my sent folder. This happens for about one out of every ten emails that I send.

That is, I am relatively sure, an AOL server problem (happens to me occasionally).
You might try Open DNS (the free one) to see if it will address other possible problems.

Previous Messages are highlighted with a line on the side

I have inadvertently changed the way a message is viewed when opened. A line now appears on the side of each previous message. I must have set this feature by mistyping and hitting a key board short cut. However I cannot find a way to revert to a view without the lines.
Mail help does not address this feature. Can anyone advise please?

It's the 1st version of Pages I've had on my computer.
Can't delete them as they scroll through them at a rapid pace. The longer I've had the problem the more blank pages it scrolls through.

Inbox shows 1 unread message after opening all the messages.why are new inbox messages not highlighted

I cannot find the unread message despite having opened all my inbox messages and wonder why the new messages are no longer in bold text.

Right click the folder, select properties and then the repair button. A new index might clear it.
If not try
View menu > folders > unread see if Thunderbird can find it since it says it is there after an index rebuild.
