Some non-Apple applications suddenly won't start.

I have a user who, after an update install for MS Office 2004, now has a number of non-Apple applications that won't start. I did some poking around, and found the following in the console log:

I've done disk permission repairs, as well as cleared the cache. The problem persists in other logins. The apps don't quit abnormally, they simply bounce once in the dock, then go away.

Check that user's Application folder.
Do they have another Office on there?
Either an older version, or the Office Test Drive?

  • Non-Apple applications won't launch

On Intel iMac, recently many non-Apple applications won't launch, including Photoshop, Indesign, Quicken, Filemaker, Techtool Pro. On the other hand, Mail, Safari, iPhoto, iTunes, Pixadex, Ultralingua all launch just fine. The non-launchers quickly present the window with Ignore, Report..., Relaunch; and using Relaunch just brings the window up again.
I've tried Disk Utility, both from the drive and from the OSX install disk; Time Machine back to just before the problem started; removed .plist file from Preferences: all to no avail.
While this problem started one week ago, we have had a new iPhone 3G since July 12 (since I see a few discussions with the same error codes related to iPhone).
Below are the error reports for Photoshop and Filemaker, and some system info.
What can I do to fix this? Thanks!

No idea what caused it, but your PPC emulator is definitely hosed and doing a clean installation would probably be less time consuming than figuring out what the problem is.
This is also all very old software that was never meant to run in Leopard at all, so you should consider the possibility that some of it will simply never work.

  • Non Apple applications fails to launch

    Hello,
Today, when I launched MS Word or other non-apple application (like Indesign 2), I've got the following error :
The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "5<Microsoft Word><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_LaunchServices>"
I tried to repair the disk autorization with the disk utility, and I also launched Onyx to reinitialize other system parameters.
I tried to reinstall the Tiger Update 10.4.8 (combo) but it failed..
Does anyone have a solution ? the other Apple Apps work fine (the iApps, mail, safari, etc..)
Thansk in advance for your help !!!

Archive and Install will install a new System but save your Users, network settings, and third party applications, and put your old System in a folder named Previous System. You might want to reinstall plugins rather than to retrieve them from the Previous System. You also might have to reinstall some third party applications if they don't work after the Archive and Install.

We installed some Windows Server Updates about 3 months ago (at the time, over 70 Windows updates were installed) but, this problem hasn't shown up until 2 or 3 weeks ago. I think a .Net Service Pack might have been part of the updates at that time. When we did the updates, Windows was shutdown and updates installed per the preferred option of Windows. But now when rebooting since that time, the server continually reccomends the install updates and shutdown option. Do we need to rollback the server to date prior those updates if possible?
I have also uninstalled .Net Framework back to 2.0. Is 1.0 or 1.1 the max that will work with XI?
Should I also try to uninstall all other Windows updates?
Thanks in advance for any help, Ed

  • Upgraded to ios5 and now no non-apple applications installed on my iPad will launch when their icon is clicked

Upgraded to ios5 and now no non-apple applications installed on my iPad will launch when their icon is clicked

Try downloading any free app from the store (as that appears to reset something) and then re-try them - the free app can then be deleted.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Firefox suddenly won't start. I open it on my Mac, I see the Apple icon and Firefox where a menu bar should be, but that's it. My only option is to Force Quit. Firefox windows won't open at all. Any advice?

As you can read above, that's it. The only thing I can think of is that I did a Microsoft update and then my Firefox stopped working. It won't start up. Windows and tabs won't open. It's completely unresponsive. I have uninstalled and reinstalled new and old Firefox, yet I have the same problem.

  • 10.6.2 update causes all non-Apple applications to crash.

update Final Cut Studio 3 and Aperture fail to open as well (pro apps)
Hi: Hoping for some expert help here.
Updated from 10.6.1 to 10.6.2 today, using the combo update. The Software Update version refused to install.
After a reboot, I was *unable to open any non-Apple branded application*. Firefox, Adobe CS3 or CS4, Roxio, MS Office, you name it. All Apple branded apps, iLife, iWork, Mail, Safari, all performed well.
I created a new admin account, hoping that those problems would not occur - but they did.
I have since done a Time Machine backup and am ready to do a clean install to rid myself of this mess.
Before I do, I'm wondering if there's an easy fix out there.
I did do a repair permissions before and after the install. I have removed Application Support files from the Library (both in the root and my profile).
Am now angry and frustrated, but this isn't the first time Apple has let me down with a poor update package.
    Any suggestions/help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

I am still happily at 10.6 because .6.1 broke things for some and offered me nothing I needed. Looks like .6.2 combo will be the same. I have no incentive to install it.
    Keep in mind:
    1. There is no evidence that the Snow Leopard updates have broken anything for most users -- because of the focus of forums like this one on problems, they are not reliable indicators of typical results.
    2. Among the reports of Snow Leopard update problems, many if not most are caused by unidentified pre-exsting conditions, not the updates themselves. These things should be fixed whether or not you update the OS because they usually get worse over time & eventually can't be ignored.
    3. For almost all users there are very strong incentives to install the updates. Among them:
    • Eliminating bugs that have been identified in the original release of the OS, typically ones that occur under relatively rare conditions. Just because one has not affected you yet does not mean it won't in the future.
    • Adding small & sometimes not-so-small improvements in the reliability, efficiency, & optimization of applications & application services. Every OS release is subject to deadlines; there are always some things that could be improved given more time to work on them. Software updates give the engineers the time they need to add these tweaks to the system.
    • Eliminating potential security exploits that have been identified in earlier releases of the OS. The OS is pretty secure to begin with; however, it is not so secure that users should become complacent about this -- especially since many of the flaws are well documented, meaning those with malicious intent can easily learn how to exploit them. This has been a historic problem with Windows: so many users of that OS are so lax about applying security updates that Windows malware that could not exploit the updated OS still regularly spread across the Internet & affect tens of millions of users. This includes Mac users because the malware often turns the vulnerable computers into "zombies" used to create botnets to do things like generate spam or launch denial of service attacks.
There is little indication that this kind of malware currently targets Macs -- Windows computers are still the low hanging fruit most malefactors target -- but continued complacency among Mac users about this issue plus the increasing market share of Macs do not bode well for the future.
Simply put, all OS's should be considered ongoing works in need of improvement. Apple does not make public all the fixes or improvements any OS update provides, so unless you try them you won't know how significant they will be for you. Caution is good -- always have a backup/reversion strategy should something go wrong -- but the old adage "if it ain't broke don't fix it" does not apply -- the OS is always broken so it is really a matter of how broken it is, not if it is or isn't.

  • Non-Apple Applications stop loading

Laptop has been working fine, yet suddenly Microsoft Office, Kodak Easyshare, etc. will not load and run. All Apple apps are fine and work normally. Double click on menu, or directly in Applications Folder for MS Office apps or others non-Apple, it seems to start, but no window appears, menu does not change, does not show as active in Apple+Tab listing nor in Force Quit dialog box.
Deleted folder for MS Office, reloaded from install CD ... no change. Then found other non-Apple apps not working as well as all office apps. Not a new laptop unit, it is Intel chip, about 14 months old. May have happened with 10.4.10 update from 10.4.9, but I can't be sure. I can reload the backup image, but I would like to know how this happened or what is causing this.

I have been looking on the Apple support site ... just tried MacFixIt.com ... I'm not getting relevent returns. If you know what keywords found this topic, I'm not having any luck!
Thank you in advance if you can give me even one to start on.

  • 4th gen. iPod touch suddenly won't start up again?

Hey all, hopefully someone can help me out.
My iPod was working perfectly up until an hour ago, and for some reason won't start up again. I've looked at the various tips, holding the power button for 10 seconds, but it still won't start up. Help would be greatly appreciated!
    -Mike

I have the same problem. I bought it 5 months ago, and just used it when I was at home. I take very good care of it. No accidental damage or misuse. But it suddenly can not start up. So I sent my ipod touch to Apple store. To my disappointed, they can not do anything. They do not want to take their responsibility.
Below is the email they sent to me.
Thank you for choosing AppleCare Service.
Your IPOD TOUCH (4TH GENERATION) has been inspected by Apple technicians, who have determined that it has been subjected to accidental damage or misuse, which is not covered by the warranty, the AppleCare Protection Plan, or other Apple repair program. Therefore your original product is being returned to you unrepaired
    So ridiculous and irresponsible
    Hope someone can help me.

  • Shake suddenly won't start

    Hi there!
I'm new to these boards, and to Shake, but I've been learning quite a bit over the last few weeks. Unfortunately, I've just run into a bit of a snag while working on some composites for a small project that I'm working on. When I click on the Shake icon in the dock, or in my applications folder, it just won't start. It does, however, start if I go through terminal - which is confusing to me.
Anyway, I had been adding some freeware macros to Shake that I recently got from highend3d.com, and after figuring out where the files should go, and getting the first one to work fine, this little issue cropped up. I was hoping that someone might have a brilliant answer before I go through the process of uninstall/reinstall.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks a lot!
    Rob

    Ahh, okay...sorry...
I opened Console, and then clicked on the Shake icon, and here is the message that Console displayed:
    7/30/08 6:23:20 PM [0x0-0x69069].com.apple.shake[597] error: unknown function -psn0430185
    7/30/08 6:23:20 PM com.apple.launchd[84] ([0x0-0x69069].com.apple.shake[597]) Exited with exit code: 1
I really have no idea what that means...but maybe you or someone else here does? Thanks again for the help!

  • Photoshop Elements 4 suddenly won't start up

I last used Elements on 7th July. It was fine. Since 21st july, it won't start - goes through all the brushes loading etc but then quits.
    I have:
Removed all Adobe programmes, prefs etc using AppZapper
Cleaned up using Adobe's maccs3clean script
Repaired disk permissions (a huge long list there, why?)
Re-installed Elements 4.0 between some of these stages.
No luck! It still crashes at the same point. Could I try reverting to an earlier system state via TimeCapsule, if so how do I do that?
Or, re-install the OS (my Leopard version would be quite old now) and do a total update?

  • ITunes 9.2 Apple Mobile Device won't start.

a few days ago i updated my itunes to the latest version (9.2) but since then its impossible to sync my iPod touch 2g. every time i start itunes and connect the ipod to the pc, a message pops up saying that Apple Mobile Device hasn't started.
i searched in forums for a solution, i tried starting it manually but then a message pops up saying that it started but then stopped again because some services close immediately when they have nothing to do.
i tried reinstalling everything.. didn't work, i tried repairing AMD from control panel also, same problem. always that message that it hasn't started and in services it says that it closed again.
i don't know what to do... please help me!

I am experiencing exactly the same issue too. Vista-64 bit O/S. Uninstalled-reinstalled iTunes 9.2 numerous times. Still getting the same error in the event logs:
Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\AppleSyncMapiInterfaceHelper_x64.exe". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.CRT,processorArchitecture="amd64",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e 3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50727.4053" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.
Another error that seems to be related is:
Faulting application AppleMobileDeviceService.exe, version 17.58.0.21, time stamp 0x4c0ed767, faulting module RPCRT4.dll, version 6.0.6002.18024, time stamp 0x49f05beb, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00017a46, process id 0x184c, application start time 0x01cb2ae2765b428f.
As a result "Apple Mobile Device" can't start and I can't connect the iPad.

  • All non-Apple Wireless Clients won't Connect to Time Capsule

I have a latest gen Apple 2TB TC (ME177LL/A) and have had it for about 14 months. I have never had any issue with it in the past and have perhaps only had to reset it twice in that 14 month span.
Came home from work last night to watch some Netflix on my PS4, and noticed my PS4 couldn't connect to the network. In the PS4 OS I kept getting errors that said either the network no longer existed or my password was incorrect. I simply tried to re-enter my password multiple times, but only once was the PS4 successfully able to connect. The one time it did connect the network speed indicated in the PS4 speed test was less than 200 kpbs. Within moments, the PS4 lost connection again. I was unable to reconnect.
At this point I figured I would just use the PS3 instead...same issue, however. Initially thought it was perhaps a PSN issue, but this time I never once could get the PS3 to connect. It repeatedly just said the network wasn't available or the password was incorrect. Went through the same troubleshooting steps that I did on the PS4 with no luck.
At this point I realized my Lyric thermostat had been erroring out and giving me a notification on my phone---the app on my phone wasn't able to connect to the Lyric via Wifi. Also noticed my August Connect was flashing red and was not connected. DirecTV Genie was not connected to my TC network either. Then went to my home office to discover my Slingbox was no longer connected either. Interestingly enough, though, my iPhone, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, wife's iPhone, and MacBook all were still connected to my TC network with no issues. I performed speed tests on all of them and all were giving me well over my 60 Gbps Internet speeds. These devices never disconnected nor had any hiccups.
Essentially determined all my non-Apple devices couldn't stay connected to the TC network.
Proceeded to just reset the TC and see what would happen. None of the non-Apple devices could connect. Same "Network not found/incorrect password"
Then proceeded to perform factory reset on TC. At the same time I unplugged my Charter internet modem from power and cat5 out. Powered on modem, waited. Then powered up TC. I did this process twice through, once with auto selected 2.4/5 Ghz channels--still had issue with devices being unable to connect. The second time through, I set up the 2.4/5 Ghz bases upon the most "open" channels as shown by iStumblr (I live in fairly large luxury apartment building that has many networks -- so there are A LOT of networks).
This time I appeared to have success. One-by-one I was able to connect all my non-Apple devices to this new network with the new SSID and credentials. All devices were able to connect and the PS3/PS4 were able to connect to PSN and I was very easily able to get Netflix.
Woke up this morning and noticed all non-Apple devices were once again not connected....really not sure what's going on. Didn't have time to dive in deeper before heading to work.
Just as an FYI, I have 2 different Macs backing up to the TC via Time Machine wirelessly (the primary reason I have a TC and not another router). Also have an Asustor AS5008T connected to the TC via round robin link aggregation. All Macs are running Yosemite. All iPhones are running iOS 8.3. Offhand, I don't know the firmware the TC is running. I made no recent changes to the network or any of the hardware.
Anybody have any idea what could be the culprit? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Whilst I said in my first post that apple had removed all the logs.. you can still get them via PC version 5 airport utility... you will need to plug in via ethernet since wireless is not working. You can also install v5 utility into a Mac but I cannot tell you how. Google it.
The other method.. and I am not at all sure if it is useful or not.
Using the airport utility in an ipad.. click on the TC, then edit.. then advanced.. Diagnostics and Usage Data.
Go into this and you will see the Airport utility has got a stack of info out of the TC..(for secret transmission to apple).
    eg
I guess it is comparison between normal functionality and when it fails that will show something interesting.. meaning you will need to track the info... and it is not so easy to get it out other than as a screenshot..

  • Apple Application Support won't install

I can't get the new itunes upgrade to install. I tried the update, that didn't work. So I unistalled itunes and quicktime thinking this might help. It didn't. I've tried everything the support says and it still won't download. I then downloaded only and when I go to the "open downloaded files" from the tool bar from the apple software update window, I click on the apple application support and I get this error:
An error occured during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.............................HRESULT: 0x8007054F
I can install the itunes and quicktime from the update window, but without the application support, i can't do anything with it. Please Help!
I'm using Vista and running Internet Explorer if that helps.

Once in "Local Security Policy", I had to go into "Local Policies" to find "User Rights Assignment", so if you're having trouble finding it, you might check that folder.
Ahhh! Thank you kindly. Sorry about that, I should have checked on the Vista box instead of on the XP Pro box.
Okay ... the key to the old iTunes issue was that there was a missing Administrators and/or SERVICE in there, so I think we've ruled that possibility out.
I think we can probably rule out the "broken Windows Modules Installer" possibility with you too. Although the poor folks with that variant of things (typically on Vista 64-bit Home Premium boxes) get a 1935 when they try to download the redistributable security update, they typically can't get any Windows Updates to install, and their error message codes are consistently Code 0x80070424 on both the failing Windows updates and the failing iTunes installs.
For the sake of folks following this thread, here's a link to the thread where we've done the bulk of the troubleshooting work (here to date) on that particular Code 0x80070424 variation:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10597133&#10597133
If you're game for more experimentation, there's a couple more things I can think of that might be worth pursuing.
The first one is operating system damage. If perhaps one or the other of those files we tried reregistering/resetting (using the Fixit) are damaged rather than deregistered or otherwise-grumpy, then an sfc scannow may be able to help with matters.
So perhaps try running an sfc /scannow as per the following document:
[How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833]
If the scannow reports that it can't repair any files, could you let us know what the sfcdetails.txt says about them?
If the scannow does find and repair damaged files, do you have any better luck with the updates and/or iTunes install?

  • Application Explorer won't start unless logged into workstat

Since upgrading all our XP workstations to Zenworks Desktop Management Agent to 7.0.173.90519 (Zenworks7 Sp1R4) some computer's Application Explorer is failing to start properly.
The Application Explorer system tray icon is defective, it does not respond to anything and no application folders are loaded. However it does work ok if you use Workstation Only first then log into Edirectory afterwards
I have tried reinstalling the Desktop Management client, Novell Client, re-registering the workstation and clearing the NAL Cache. The only thing that fixes it is reloading Windows

If you are able to open an SR, I would recommend doing so.
What happens if you set "Application Explorer" so that is does NOT load
    automatically.
    Login Normally.
    Then load "Application Explorer" manually.
If that helps, how are you loading "Application Explorer".
