Some of my icons have disappeared from my desktop

Quite a few of my app icons have disappeared from my iPad screen.  I can still go into the app thru notifications or thru the purchased section of the App Store.  Does anyone know how to get them back???  Thank you so very much!!!! Carolyn

If you can still access these apps from the purchased tab of the App Store or via a spotlight search, they cannot be restricted. Restrictions will hide apps and make them totally unusable - hence the restrictions name.
Have you tried resetting the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appears on the screen?
Or, you can also try resetting the home screen layout and the home screen icon will reappear - but the home screen will return to the way that it looked when you first activated your iPad.
Settings>General>Reset>Reset Home Screen Layout.

    Hi iPheariPhoPad,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like there’s an issue with Settings, the Notes app entry isn’t showing up as expected. Take a look at the article linked below and try restarting your iPhone 3GS.

The deeper levels of tools have all disappeared from my Tool Bar.  Clicking on the arrow beside the tool does nothing?  How do I get them back?  I have restarted both Photoshop and my computer and this does not help.  Thanks.

Try "Reset All Tools"  Right-click on the Hand Tool in the Options bar, or whatever tool is active, and click on Reset all Tools from the menu.
This screen shot will show you where that is.

  • External Hard Drive Icons have disappeared from Desktop

I have 4 external drives, 3 G-Tech and 1 LaCie, I don't have them on permanently and today I switched them on for my usual backups but the icons didn't appear. My finder prefs shows External disks checked and indeed if I check/uncheck Hard disks they switch on and off but external disks there is nothing.
I can see the drives in Disk utility and can open them from there and my backup app "Databackup" can see them and backup files as normal. I've unplugged/plugged all relevant cables, shut down, restarted, verified disks (no problems) all to no avail. I haven't updated any software since I last used them (yesterday) so I'm at a loss.
Does anyone have any clue, I'd be most grateful for any input.
    Thanks
    Ed

    Hello ED
You don't say which of your Mac's the Drives are connected to or if there FireWire / USB?
If there chained FireWire, disconnect them all and try connecting the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Drive in the chain directly to the Mac/iMac.
If there USB connected thru a Hub, by pass the Hub and connect them up one at a time directly to the Mac/iMac.

  • Hard Drive and Desktop Icons Have Disappeared From Dessktop

I can locate all the files and access them via "search" and clicking on them, but can't see them on the desktop.
Problem started with difficulty using Spotlight, which eventually led to a freeze and when I restarted, the images were gone.
Have already tried: (1) Disk First Aid, which found a couple of minor problems, but was unable to complete the verification test, stating "underlying disk needs repair" and "1 HFS volume checked needs repair. . . (2) Trashing the Finder preference (which had no effect) . . . and (3) Restarting — both from the existing OS, as well as the Mac OS X Install CD. Tried several times with the latter (holding down the C key), but it did not override the damaged system.
Can't remember the last time I had to reinstall a system, bu it probably was at least 5 years Ago, if not longer, so am hoping to avoid that. Also have found a few directions online (and in an Apple document) that require rewriting a script, which scares me even more, since I've NEVER done that and am concerned about messing up my system even further.
Am hoping there's an easy fix that does not require taking the computer in for service.

Sorry. I am NOT using 10.2.
    I am using 10.4.11!
Also working with the original set of disks that came with the computer.
The first time I tried to boot with the Software Install disk, I assumed it had not booted properly, because the entire desktop (such as it was . . . i.e., just a few assorted folders, apps down the side and icons for the install disk appeared with with it.)
The same thing happened when I held down the shift key while booting.
Both times when I tried to use Disk First Aid, a message stated that it was not compatible with the current OS.
And no, I did not think to see which OS was active either time. But I wouldn't be surprised to find 9.2 (Classic), . . . one of the operating systems identified on the disk) which was available as an option at that time, for users still using software that had not yet been updated by the manufacturers.
But even if I had thought of that, I probably also would have tried to avoid loading OS 10.0.4 if I didn't have to. (Why take an unnecessary step backward?)
Fast forward to today: My computer is still working. Miraculously, Spotlight has reappeared (on its own). I think I can access all or most of the files on my computer by using "search" . . . but the only ones currently on my desktop (and reappearing after a shutdown) are the few that op up at random, when Iaccidentally hit the "G" spot.
The icons for the hard drive and other peripherals still don't show up . . . which, in combiation with the missing file icons suggests to me that I still have a problem, which I would rather repair now, than wait for it to multiply or cause a major, irretrievable crash.

  • Some of my photos have disappeared from iphoto

    Hi
I'm running iphoto 09 (version 8.1.2 424) on my Mac Book (Mac OS X 10.5.6).
I've just noticed that several photos are missing from various events. In some cases there is only one photo left. This appears to have happened randomly - some of the events are unaffected, others have just a few missing, others most.
Are there any suggestions as to what might have happened and how I could retrieve the photos? There are no thumbnails or anything. They just appear to have vanished!
    Many thanks.

OK so I've been digging around in this forum and seen a post which says that dragging photos from iphoto to the Trash Can in the Finder sidebar rather than iphoto's trash can, can corrupt the iphoto Library.
I've always deleted photos from iphoto by doing this - I didn't realise this was something I shouldn't be doing. Could this be the cause? And if so can I do anything to remedy it?
I regular back up everything to an external hard drive but I have never had cause to restore anything from it. Would I be able to do this without losing what I already have, and is there an optimum way to restore photos I don't currently have on the imac which might still be backed up on the external hard drive?
    Thank you.

  • Some of my photos have disappeared from my iPad and iphone

I Have lost a large number of photos from my collections/albums. Random dates. How can I retrieve these. Everything is backed up to the cloud.

    Howdy Jan,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like some photos are missing from your iPhone and you want to know how to go about recovering them from an iCloud backup. Take a look at the articles linked below, the first will walk you through the restore process and the second provides information that’ll assist you in recovering photos after restoring from an iCloud backup.
iCloud: Restore or set up your iOS device from iCloud
Get help finding missing information in iCloud after restoring an iOS device - Apple Support
    Your photos
In iOS 8 with iCloud Photo Library beta turned on, your photos and videos are stored in iCloud. They aren’t included in your iCloud backup. When you restore from iCloud Photo Library, your device downloads thumbnails of your photos and videos, and any original photos stored on your device.
If you’re using iOS 8 and haven’t turned on iCloud Photo Library, or if you’re using iOS 7, iCloud backup includes photos and videos in your Photo Library or Camera Roll. They’ll download to your iOS device when you restore.
Photos in My Photo Stream are already stored in iCloud, so they aren’t part of your backup. iCloud stores the photos that you uploaded to My Photo Stream for 30 days. To keep these photos on your device and make them part of your backups, save these photos to your Photo Library, Camera Roll, or another album.
To view a My Photo Stream album, make sure My Photo Stream is turned on in Settings (If you use iCloud Photo Library, the My Photo Stream folder is removed).
To recover photos that originally synced to your device from your computer, sync your device using iTunes on a computer.
To restore Photo Library (or Camera Roll) photos to an iPhone or iPod touch, the iCloud backup must be from an iPhone or iPod touch. To restore Photo Library (or Camera Roll) photos to an iPad, the iCloud backup must be from an iPad.
    Ciao,
    -Jason

  • Some of my songs have disappeared from Library

I've imported more than a dozen CDs into iTunes and have been listening to them on the computer and with my shuffle. Now, I get error message on some songs from a CD (but not the other ones) that says, "...the original file could not be found." When I go to the iTunes music folder, I can't find some songs from the album.
Any suggestions? Is there a limit to how many songs can be in the iTunes Library? Would the songs be move to another place on my computer?

I am having the exact same problem. Strangely, the song that was non-existent and had an exclamation at the left, appeared fine the next time I opened iTunes to update my library, or create a playlist.
Play it safe and back-up all your songs, whether they're on iTunes or another application on your computer. If you've a DVD burner, the single layer DVD holds appx. 4.7 Gigs of data. Download all your music files onto however many DVD discs it takes. If you've an external hard drive, send them there. I don't trust iTunes quite yet.
As well, I keep duplicate song copies in my Windows Media Player 10. I've had no issues nor surprises.
Let me know what you find out. And vica-versa.

  • These icons have disappeared on my iPad 1; iTunes, safari, app store. How to restore???

These icons have disappeared from my ipad1; itunes, safari & app store. I cannot use the ipad because of these missing apps. How to transfer these app from my mac to the ipad?

They are built-in apps, so they can't be deleted, though they might be hidden (you also can't copy them from your Mac, they are different operating systems). If you can't find them on any of your homescreens or app folders, and you can't find them via the spotlight search screen (pull down the centre of the home screen down in iOS 7, swipe your first home screen to the right in iOS 6 and below), then are thet hidden by Settings > General > Restrictions > Installing Apps, Safari, and iTunes being set 'off' ?
If not then have you tried a reset to see if you can find them after the iPad has restarted ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Why does my external drive disappear from my desktop?

I am switching from PC to Mac. I have 2 externaldrives. Both have been formatted in FAT 32 by the MAC. When I plug them in the desktop and finder see them, then with both of them they have disappeared from the desktop and from finder. Still can be seen in disk utility and system profiler. How can I find them and why does this happen?

If you daisy chained then try without. May not be enough power to handle both at sme time. Other than that read some info:
    1. Shut-down your Mac, and unplug the power cord
    2. Turn the power off on your external FireWire devices
    3. Unplug the FireWire devices from the Mac
    4. Wait for 5 min.
    5. Plug the power cord to your Mac only
    6. For PPC Macs: Restart the Mac while holding the Option-Apple-O-F, and keep holding until you get the ">" prompt, then release the keys
    7. At the ">" prompt type:
reset-nvram and hit the Return key
set-defaults and hit the Return key
reset-all and hit the Return key
the last command will restart your mac
    8. Shut down your Mac
    9. Connect all your FireWire devices to the Mac and turn them on
    10. Restart your Mac.
All your FireWire devices should reapear, if not repeat the procedure
How to avoid the issue :
The only really proven way to avoid burning up a FireWire port is to connect all devices and to turn them on PRIOR turning on the Mac. Likely, one must unplug them and turn them off AFTER the Mac has been turned off. If you need to connect another device, then you're on for a shutdown of your machine...
It's a tad annoying but it guarantees that the FW ports won't be damaged.
Be careful when using self powered devices such as webcams, iPods, hard drives or hubs, as they can destroy the port pretty easily. Another thing is to avoid daisy-chaining hard drives.
When the FW port doesn't respond anymore :
In this case, peripherals won't be mounted upon plugging, and won't be displayed in Apple's System Profiler. The self powered devices will still be fed by the port, but won't respond either.
It happens that the PHY just hangs after a surge or a random problem. Once hung, the port will not respond any longer, it is possible to reset the component by going through the following steps :
1° boot the PPC mac in Open Firmware by holding [ Apple key - Option - O - F ] after the startup chime.
2° you'll get to a command prompt. the keyboard mapping will be QWERTY, so pay attention when you type the following :
RESET-NVRAM (enter)
RESET-ALL (enter)
3° Now the mac should restart itself and the port should function properly again.
If it still doesn't work, then it means that the PHY is damaged.

    From Wiebetech:
I just upgraded my Mac OS, and now I'm having trouble with my FireWire device. What can I do?
A: With nearly every OS update Apple releases, some external drives are not recognized after the update. The typical symptom is that the device will not mount but the volume is visible and grayed out in Disk Utility. This means that the device is working properly, but the OS does not recognize the volume as mountable. Sometimes the drive does not show up at all.
The first thing to do is to see if repairing Permissions with Apple's Disk Utility First Aid feature solves the problem. If not, try repairing the disk with First Aid. Another possible solution is to zap the PRAM. This is done with a keyboard command while rebooting. Restart your computer and hold down the Command, Option, P and R keys. Consult the Apple web site for details.
If this does not work, then try pushing the PMMU reset button on the logic board. Consult the Apple web site for locations of the button for your Mac. If the drive still does not show up, shut down, disconnect all peripheral devices, and boot from the Mac OS Installation CD. The later the OS version, the better. Do not reinstall the OS, but when the Installer is loaded up and ready to begin, go to the File menu and use the Disk Utility program. Connect the drive that is having problems, then start the Disk Utility application. If you see the external drive and it is not grayed out, you know the drive is okay. Run Disk First Aid on it anyway. Then run it on your internal boot drive while you are at it. When done, unmount the external drive and UNPLUG it! Then restart the Mac.
When the Mac has restarted and is running on the internal boot drive, reconnect the external drive.

As mentioned in the header to this question, the toolbar icon symbols have disappeared from apps such as mail and safari and from finder windows - just grey boxes appearing without the sumbols that are usually there. Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Some contacts have disappeared from my phone contacts. They are still in the phone because if someone calls me their name appears and if i search in text for contacts they are still there - but if i search in phone contacts they are not there, Help

Some contacts have disappeared from my phone. Not all just random ones. They are still in the phone because if someone (who has disappeared from my phone contacts calls me their name appears and if i search in text messages for contacts they are still there - but if i search in phone contacts they are not there, Help!

But once again, I do not want to lose my other texts, app progress, and photos. I could sync the photos but i would still lose the app progress and texts. I would only restore if it was the only option left, but the other space, as already stated, isnt the main concern. The main concern is those 'deleted' texts. If they go, then a good size chunk of the other space goes. I know you CAN delete texts for good. It worked fine before. All i want to know is why its not working for me now, and how to fix it.
I also know that when you delete texts on your iphone, they get marked for deletion, however they stay on your device (thats why they show up when you search for them.) then when you sync your device with itunes, the texts marked for deletion should disappear. When i synced they didnt disappear. Thats what i need an explanation/solution for. Why the texts marked for deletion didnt get fully deleted after the sync.

  • Songs have disappeared from my library and Ipod.  I have found some in trash but I did not send them there.  Others have completely gone.

Hi - I have discovered that some songs have disappeared from my itunes library and Ipod. I have found some of them in trash even though I did not trash them, as they are some of my all time favourite songs.  I have now restored these trashed songs to my library/ipod.
However I cannot find some other missing songs in trash - so I have no idea where they could be! It makes me feel very insecure about itunes as a whole.  I would prefer music to diamionds - and it disturbs me when music just disappears like that!  An explanation/solution would be gratefully received.  I wonder whether I can ask Apple to pay for the items that have gone for good!

    Andrea,
have you tried to update the Ipod? If not try that, but do not restore it. If you still cannot find the songs, there is - I suppose you are using windows - a nifty little program available from Findley Designs (www.findleydesigns.com) that allows you to transfer Music from your Ipod to your PC. Download it and see if it works with one song, if it does it is about USD 14 to buy and helps if you want to transfer songs from your Ipod to your computer. If you have transferred the music to your computer you can restore your Ipod-
    Good luck
    Thomas
