Some of my playlists in iTunes have exclamations!

I recently purchased a new iPhone 4S and when adding it to iTunes, I went to sync my iTunes playlists to the iPhone. I noticed that some playlists were not complete on the iPhone. When I went into iTunes on my computer (MacBook) I noticed exclamation marks by many of the songs. I have sort of learned why that happens but cannot figure out how to fix it other than manually fixing them one by one which will take forever!
Is there a way to fix this universally? Please help!
Many thanks!

They may be encode as 96 kbps or less, are over 200MB in size, or were purchased with copy protection (DRM) from a source other than the iTunes store (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4124).
Right-click on the songs in iTunes and select Get Info, then look at the Bit Rate on the Summary tab to see if they are over 96 kbps.  If so, right-click on them and choose Create AAC version.  Then rescan your iTunes Match library (Store>Update iTunes Match) and see if they are elligible now.

  • Is there a way to delete all duplicates, other than one by one?  some free program or does itunes have one to just identify and delete all duplicates in the library?

How do I delete duplicates in my library as a group, rather than one by one?

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here... HT2905: How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

  • Songs purchased in itunes have exclamation point

Yesterday, I purchased several songs on itunes, and never did anything else with them. Today, when I opened it up, it had a exclamation point next to 2 of the songs and said the original file cannot be found. The songs are still on my ipod, even after I synced it with those songs saying they were missing.
I don't see how this can happen, as I only bought them yesterday, I never did anything with them, and it only happened with some of them. Does anyone know where I can find them?

Try finding them using these directions

  • HT204406 A few of my playlists in itunes are not transferring to my iphone 4 when I sinc it to itunes.  I'm also using icloud, help?

Some of my playlists in itunes are not transferrring to my iPhone either by sincing and by icloud.  I turned itunes match on and off several times and still doesn't put missing playlists on my phone.  I didn't have this issue prior to saving to icloud and using itunes match.  Anyone else having this issue?
    Thanks.

    Hi oxman78,
That definitely sounds frustrating! Let's give this a go to see if we can isolate the issue futher:
First, connect your device and choose the "Music" tab. Next, uncheck the "Sync Music" checkbox, and apply the changes (so there is ultimately no music syncing to your iPhone).
Once you have done that, recheck the "Sync Music" checkbox, and apply the changes once more. This will instruct iTunes to completely remove all music from your iPhone, and then copy the files once more. If you have a large amount of music, this initial sync may take a while.

  • Tracks and playlists on iTunes not syncing with iPhone 5

I'm using windows 7 with the latest updates, the latest update of iTunes and an up to date iPhone 5.
All I want to do is sync the playlists and tracks on iTunes to my iPhone. I'm using the 'sync music' tick box and then selecting the playlists and artists which I want to sync. This method was taking absolutely ages with 'determining tracks to sync' coming up for 15 or so minutes. After this, nothing changed on the phone or pc. Apart from some of the playlists on iTunes emptying of tracks and some playlists being deleted from the phone. Neither of which I wanted!
So I thought I'd try to add music manually. I started by adding playlists to the phone which was taking ages but at least the job was getting done. Suddenly, certain tracks wouldn't transfer And a message would pop up on the phone telling me so and to check iTunes. I'm up to 37 tracks not transferring so far.
So I am at a bit of a loss. I'm using all the latest up to date software and a genuine lightening cable.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

  • Most of the songs on my Ipod have exclamation points next to them.

All of the songs on my Ipod (except for songs purchased from Itunes) have exclamation points next to them, however the songs are in my Itunes library and work just fine in the library, so Itunes knows where the songs are, the problem is on the Ipod itself. The songs stop working once they are on the Ipod. There is no explanation anywhere for what the exclamation point means.
I've tried re-copying the songs from my library to my Ipod. Didn't Work.
I've tried resetting the entire Ipod and recopying my music, only to have it stop working again the next time I tried to sync music.
I have a 6th gen Ipod touch on version 8.1.3 and im running Itunes on 12.1.1.4

The ! means hat the actual music file can't be found
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync/delete all music and resync
To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Manage Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

If they were songs you purchased from itunes, try redownloading them from your purchases...
if that doednt work, make sure the optuon to copy files to itunes media folder is checked in settings, then find and download from the net. and re-add them to your library

  • Hi I have recently had my computer reset and now can't find my original playlist on itunes for my ipod how can I find this or how can I put my music from my ipod onto itunes

Hi I have recently had my computer reset and now can't find my original playlist on itunes, how can I transfer it from my ipod into itunes, or how can I find the original one?

Expanding on what The Fiend said, the license to play music from a CD is tied to and stays with the CD. So if you sell or give away the CDs, the license to play the music goes with them, at which point you legally no longer have the right to the tracks. You need to keep the CDs if you want to keep the music.
As for transferring the tracks from your iPhone back to your computer so you don't have to re-import all your CDs, check out this post from Zevoneer for some iPod/iPhone media recovery options:

  • My smart playlists in iTunes match are not interpreting "date added" property correctly for some songs.

I have many smart playlists that are dependent upon the "date added" property of my songs. I use iTunes match on a PC, my iPad (4th gen), and my iPhone 5, and my music is stored on my iMac. For some reason, (on my iPhone only) a handful of songs stubbornly continue to appear in smart playlists even though their "date added" is much earlier than the playlists dictate. And they are the same handful of songs on all playlists that have this problem.
Turning off Live Updating resolves the problem, but then what's the point of a smart playlist if I have to continually update it manually? Turning off iTunes Match on my iPhone, deleting music, and turning iTunes Match back on does not resolve the problem.

I think I have figured this out, so I'll share in case anyone else has this issue. I had automatic downloads enabled for my iPhone, so any iTunes music purchases were automatically downloaded to my phone. As a result, the "date added" attribute of a song is tied to when it was downloaded to the phone rather than when I originally purchased the song and added it to my iTunes library.
I disabled iTunes Match, deleted these songs from my phone, re-enabled iTunes Match, and that seems to have done the trick.

How do I add a playlist to iTunes Match so that it'll appear on my Apple TV?  It was appeared on it before but ever since I added some CDs to the playlist, it won't show anymore.  Please help.

When new content is added to a playlist it has to be updated for it to be available across devices. If it's content that isn't matched the playlist is removed from the cloud. Did you make sure to access store - update iTunes Match? It should do it automatically after a few minutes but the odd time I have to force it.
Other than that may want to try reboot, log out/in.

  • TS1717 I have exclamation marks (!) which has ruined my playlist as it doesn't function as it should. I was downloading music when a scan had started which I cancelled.  Ever since then I've had these exclamation marks anyone know how to fix it?

I have exclamation marks at the beginning of the titles which has ruined my playlist as it doesn't function as it should. I was downloading music when a scan started which I then cancelled as it was slowing down my download. Ever since then I've had these exclamation marks and now these tunes are not transferrable and I've lost them in my music file on the ipod nano and so cannot reload them again. Anyone know how to remove the !!!'s or clean my files?

You get exclamation marks or dead tracks because  iTunes can’t find the file. This can happen for a number of reasons:
The song file or a folder in its path was renamed
The song file or the folder it is in has been moved
The song file has been deleted
The device containing the song files e.g. external drive is not accessible or the drive letter has changed..
Usually the actual music files are still there, so you need to check to see if you can find them.
If they are there, open iTunes and select a problem track, right click and select Get Info.
Answer NO when asked if you want to locate the track.
Now you should see where iTunes thinks the tack is located on the summary tab, how does this compare with where the track actually is.
This info should help work out what has gone wrong.

  • When I burn a disc from a playlist in iTunes, the track names and artist info does not display on the disc when friends view/listen to it. This probably is an easy fix, but I need some advice.

When I burn a disc from a playlist in iTunes on my MacBook, the track names and artist info does not display on the disc when friends view/listen to it. This probably is an easy fix, but I need some advice.

No, this standard has been implemented for several decades.
How iTunes remembers audio CDs - http://support.apple.com/kb/TA27785
It is just conceivable you burned a CD that exactly matched one already in the Gracenote database.  Gracenote uses track count and duration to decide what CD it is you have in a computer.  If you have one that matches that it will label it.  You could conceivably even have one that matches it that is not the correct one.
This script will only work on Macs:

    Hey csumner1,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are receiving a "Not enough free space" alert when attempting to sync your new iPhone 4s. The following article may help to resolve your issue:
iOS: "Not enough free space" alert when trying to sync
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1503
    Resolution
Try disconnecting and reconnecting your device, then syncing again to solve this issue.
Orphaned files may remain on your iOS device if it is physically disconnected while syncing music, podcasts, videos, or photos. This can prevent iTunes from syncing the iOS device on subsequent sync sessions. When this happens, the Capacity indicator in iTunes may report a large amount of "Other" disk usage for the iOS device. To resolve this issue:
    1. Turn off the music or photo sync option in iTunes for the device.
    2. Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.
    3. Turn the music and photo sync options for the device on again.
    4. Click Apply again to try to sync the device to iTunes.
              - If the 'Not enough free space' alert appears, continue to step 5.
    5. Turn off the automatic syncing functions for the iOS device. To do this:
              - Select the iOS device from the iTunes window and click the Summary tab.
              - Deselect "Automatically sync when this device is connected" and select the "Sync only checked songs and videos" checkbox.
              - Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.
              - Reduce the amount of data that is being synced to the device and resync the device. For example, if syncing your Music library exceeds the memory capacity of the device, choose "Selected playlists" to transfer rather than "All songs and playlists" under the Music tab in iTunes.
If the 'Not enough free space' alert appears, continue to step 6.
    6. Restore using iTunes.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.
