Some paragraphs print as bitmaps

Looking closely at a Pages08 document printed on a laserprinter, I found that some paragraphs were printed in very poor quality (not vectorised). I checked absolutely ALL parameters of those paragraphs, even copied and pasted format of neighbouring paragraph that was using the same font and style with no problem at. Even copying and pasting a non-problematic paragraph could then encounter the same problem.
I first thought that the problem was related to the font I was using (Helvetica Neue Light). But then changing a faulty paragraph to even Arial would not solve the problem.
I then thought it was a printer problem (HP...). But exporting in PS showed that it wasn't printer related. It's completely random and really annoying.
I'd like to attach a blown-up of the Post-Script export showing contrast between a faulty paragraph and a normal paragraph, but I don't know how to embed a picture into my posting.
Any thoughts anyone?

Hi MakeSense,
Welcome to Pages discussions.
Two printers I use with Pages and Numbers, both work perfectly, are Brother 5040 laser, and Canon i960 inkjet. Now that Yvan confirmed it's a HP hit allow me to suggest using this forums search feature. There you'll find numerous hits about using HP printers with Pages. Someplace in there may be something that will assist you; truly I hope so.
1. In the upper right of Discussions, just below "Search Discussions more options", click in the Search box type your request such as, Pages and HP printers, then press return
2. Change Restrict by Category or Forum: to iWork > Pages,
3. Change Restrict by Date Range: to All,
4. Click search; you'll receive many hits. Looking through them may solve your issue or point you in a better direction.
Prior to posting a question use Search, many thousands of questions have been asked, their answers will provide direct solutions, tips, or workarounds.
Also available is the regular Apple Support as well; http://www.apple.com/search/support/. In Pages you may want to click Help > Pages User Guide then download it. Much good information there as well. After doing all that if you cannot find your question or an appropriate answer to your question then by all means ask your question. Truly we'll be pleased to assist you.
These Discussions are user helping user, not Apple employees answering the question. Questions will be answered when a user such as yourself finds time, desires to, knows the answer along with the time to respond.
Again, welcome to Pages Discussions, have fun here. I hope you'll be able to find a solution to your printer issue.

  • Print a Bitmap to a chosen printer

    Hello all,
One of our customers, has an implementation where some user data are stored as bitmap images on a server. Right now, the user can view those images and then choose to save them on the local PC . Those images are shown at SAP using the ABAP Bitmap Image Processing Class found on this blog
    /people/thomas.jung/blog/2007/09/05/abap-bitmap-image-processing-class
Now the customer, is requesting that the user, instead of saving the file, should be able to print it on a printer that he chooses .
The important part is, that the bitmap file should not be saved first on the user's computer .
To be more specific, what we actually need, is to change this class, with another that will be printing the bitmap instead of saving it .
      CALL METHOD CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES=>FILE_SAVE_DIALOG
       EXPORTING DEFAULT_EXTENSION    = '.bmp'
                 DEFAULT_FILE_NAME    = lv_filename
                 FILE_FILTER          = 'Bitmap files (*.BMP)'
       CHANGING  FILENAME             = lv_filename
                 PATH                 = lv_path
                 FULLPATH             = lv_fullpath.
      CHECK NOT lv_fullpath IS INITIAL.
Is this possible and if so, how ?
    Thank you

    Hi there,
if you have the bitmap in binary format then you can try the following function calls
    RSPO_SR_OPEN
    RSPO_SR_WRITE_BINARY
    RSPO_SR_CLOSE

  • How to restrict editing of some paragraphs and allow for others in same document?

I have a client that wants to put together standard proposals that have boiler plate information (long paragraphs and some imagery) that will not change. In the same document they have other information that is to be customized by sales teams (text and images). Sometimes, they will have a sentence or a phrase which needs changing in the middle of a long paragraph but the rest of it remains the same. Since these documents are shared and edited by multiple parties, they would like to restrict some paragraphs from editing while making other areas editable, perhaps on the same page of the document. Is there a way to do this in Acrobat Pro XI?

Thanks for that, yes I’ve been creating pdfs in InDesign for better layout results. We want to generate a template that our international sales team can use for templates, sharing over a server, and trying to prevent them from ruining text flow, image flow etc. just wondering where my limitations are at.\
Thanks for your help. Anymore suggestions are very welcome.

  • Raster Vector Balance vs Print as bitmap

I'm getting problems frequently when printing where a drop shadow or a clipping mask creates a discoloration on a solid color area of color in the background.
I can eliminate this using Print as Bitmap although it seems to affect the printed colors, is slower and comes out at a lower resolution than when I don't use this option.
My question is -- if I change the Raster/Vector balance in the Custom Flattener presets down to 0 (so everything is Raster), how is this different than using Print As Bitmap?

    Your answer:
Adobe Illustrator is optimized for PostScript printing. When you print from Illustrator to a non PostScript printer, objects may not print, or may print incorrectly.
Non PostScript printing problems can manifest themselves in many different ways, including (but not limited to) the following:
Text or other objects are partially or completely missing from the page.
A system error or freeze occurs.
     Try doing this:
Set Raster/Vector balance to 0 with Print As Bitmap unchecked.
İ think quality will get better.

  • Print as Bitmap to Postscript printers?

Illustrator CS3,CS4 MAC various postscript printers
Is there any possible way to print a file as bitmap to a postscript printer? The option in the Print / Advanced section in illustrator is always greyed out.
I would want to do this in cases where the vector art is too complex to print (locks up the printer, disregards it, postscript errors etc). I can rasterize the problematic artwork first or even use a layer effect however if the option to Print as Bitmap was available for Postscript printers it would save a lot of time.
    Thanks J

You could create a Flattener preset where the Vector Balance slider is set to 0 (the far left). At that setting, the entire artwork is rasterized and effectively prints as an image. Just dial in the resolution you want into the preset as well. You might call the preset "Print as Image" ;-)

  • Grainy Type / Print as Bitmap

    Hello,
We've been having an odd issue with Adobe design software and our Brother 4040CDN colour laser printer. When printing type from an Adobe product (namely Illustrator CS5 or InDesign CS5) it appears grainy and not the precise typographic smoothness you expect from a laser printer.
Printing from Microsoft Word or Apple Pages produces beautiful smooth type, so the issue lies presumably somewhere in the Adobe drivers/settings. After much fiddling with the InDesign CS5 settings, I was able to de-select "Print as Bitmap" in the Advanced print settings and the results were beautiful, smooth vector based type:
However, trying this same technique in Illustrator CS5, I am unable to select or de-select the "Print as Bitmap" option:
I've searched for and tried many different solutions to the grainy type issue, but to no avail. Any insight into:
    1) Alternate approaches to solve the "grainy type" issue from Adobe products.
    2) Forcing the "Print as bitmap" option in Illustrator CS5.
    Thanks in advance. Much appreciated.
    -Kyle

Printing from Acrobat produces the same result, sadly.
Updated the Brother firmware and reset the Acrobat settings and it seems to printing great now.
Illustrator still prints grainy type. Any ideas on parlaying this success into Illustrator? Thanks.

  • Cannot print a bitmap in .psd CS4

All of a sudden I can't print a bitmap image in CS4, nor can I view it in print preview. Did I flip a switch?
    Thanks for any help. Mark

Is the PDF embedded in the page (similar to how a Flash movie can be embedded in a page) or is the PDF displayed in the full window?
If the PDF has the full window, you probably need to use the print icon supplied by Adobe Reader. In the version I have, it appears on a toolbar when I float my mouse pointer over the center of the document about 80% of the way down the window. Not as convenient as earlier versions.

  • Some paragraph tags are not printing when document is printed from Framemaker 10.

So this is really odd. I have a situation where I have a document that I am developing in Framemaker 10 several different paragraph tags are intermittently not printing when the document is physically printed. When I go to print the document from Framemaker 10 to a physical piece of paper some tags are printing partially or not at all. What makes this stranger to me is that when I print the document to a PDF, all of the content and tags show up in the PDF. Then when I try to physically print from the PDF, the tags do no print from that document as well.
Typically the tags that are not printing are those that have been bolded, but are across several different tags. Also the problem is sometimes only to the first line of a tag, where if the tag carries over to a second line in the document, the text on the second line prints. Another quirky instance that shows up is where the text a line will print only parts of the text. The document uses the same type font for the entire document, Helvetica 55 Roman. The font size varies and the coloring varies as well, but this issue is happening for all sizes and colors.
I'm not sure what additional information is important here, but if you need additional information please request it and I will supply it to the best of my ability. I'm a content developer with an intermediate amount of experience with Framemaker.

I'm not sure if this is the same problem, and you didn't mention your
OS, but there was a widespread problem with dropped text in PDF with
Windows XP. A hotfix was issued to fix it. If on Windows XP, you should
    install it:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2008/07/hotfix_for_framemaker_1.html
Also, you mentioned that it was "bolded" text that tended to have the
problem. Bolded text is artificially bold and does not use actual bold
fonts. (If I recall, text is double printed at a slight offset to give
the appearance of a bold font.) So there is no bold font to embed. Be
sure you install and use an actual bold font, rather than using the
bolded characteristic, or you could see problems.
This is a stretch, but you also mentioned that some of the problem
sections have colored text. Check the printer properties of your Adobe
PDF virtual printer to make sure someone didn't reassign the driver (on
the Advanced tab). It should be set to use the Adobe PDF Converter
driver (or Acrobat Distiller in older Acrobat versions). Years ago,
people sometimes changed this setting to use other drivers for various
reasons, not realizing that they limited themselves to the capabilities
of that driver. So, if they chose an HP LaserJet PostScript driver, for
example, their documents might no longer be able to be 11"x17" or
color-- because the printer couldn't handle it. The driver was limited
to 8.5"x14" and black-and-white. Perhaps there is a driver set that is
choking on the colored text-- though I would think it would merely
    convert it to B&W.
Okay, I've grasped at enough straws.

  • Some Text Prints Clear, Some Text Prints Blurry

I have an HP F4480 all in one printer-scanner-copier.  I recently changed the black ink cartridge with a genuine HP cartridge, printed the alignment page and scanned it as well.  However, some lines of text are printing clear, and others are printing blurry, with a shadow type effect to the letters.  Below is a scan of one of the printouts, I put a blue mark by the blurry lines.  I did an intermediate clean of the print heads, and the following printout (an image of two pears, in color) looks fine.  I did a paper clean feed for good measure too, and still have the same issue.  I have the dpi set at 600 (normal).  I'm running Windows Vista 32 bit operating system.  Any idea what's going on here?  Any help would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

I have the same problem with my F4480. I print from two different computers to the shared printer on one of the computers.

  • Some clients print, some don't

Server is PPC running OS X Server 10.4.11.
    Clients are OS X 10.4.11 or 10.5.
Users are enabled for print in WGM, Server Admin says Print Services are on.
Epson printer is connected to the server.
Some of the clients can print to the shared printer. Some cannot. In one case, a user has two installations of the Mac OS X on one machine, each on a separate disk. For some work, the user boots OS X 10.4, for other work he boots 10.5. The 10.4 install can print, the 10.5 cannot.
I have deleted and added the printers several times. I can see a printer with the correct name in the browser, it adds but sending it a print job is not received by the print service.
User logon is the same for both installations.
All suggestions, links and WAG's warmly encouraged.

Sorry I can't provide a better answer than the others but think for a second.
Think about your customers' motivations for copying instead of calling you.
Try to imagine what's in their minds. "Why should I call the photographer and pay him for prints when I can do it myself?"
    You have two options:
    1) Use technical means to prevent them from doing it.
    2) Provide them something that they can't get anywhere else.
You can use Digimarc. You can visibly watermark. You can use some software scheme to encrypt files or make them difficult to copy. You can probably do 100 different things. But you still haven't addressed the main question.
What can you do that would make them WANT to call you back?
What can you do that provides them with a service that they can't do themselves?
I don't know what you can do because I don't know your skills. I don't know what equipment you have. I don't know the nature of your business. However, let me make some general suggestions.
Can you provide "giant" hi-res prints?
    How about picture packages?
Memory books? DVD slide shows? Graphic design?
I don't know... My suggestions are probably lame. But I'm trying to say that you should try to do something that people really want and that they would willingly pay for.
Long story short: Let's apply some lateral thinking.

  • I need some help printing to plates please please

Hi all I am brand new to illustrator CS4 as of today I am starting to print church stuff and need to print to polyester plates I have a logo I cannot seem to be able to figure out how to print each plate for CMYK. Please help me as I want to start printing ASAP. I have searched and searched but cannot seem to find info that is straight forward something seems to change from real world to what I read.  Anyone? I would really appreciate some help please

Printing to polyester plates requires an expensive piece of hardware.  It is not a simple "print-out-of-Illustrator" solution.  There may be some opportunities for printing direct to the RIP which then generates the plates.  There are also direct-to-plate digital presses.  You need to do some research on what is available and how much it will cost.  Contact your local offset print shop and ask them if they can help you narrow down the search for a solution.
This assumes you have no platesetter or digitla press on the premises.  If you do, then you need to learn the operating manual for the equipment you have in place.  Not sure what your situation is and what you have to work with other than Illustrator.

  • Some paragraphs won't stay together no matter what I do. What am I missing?

    Why is this happening?

I think I may have misunderstood you. The screenshot in your initial post shows a widow (the last line of the paragraph that is separated by a page break), so I thought you were talking about keeping lines of a paragraph together. Now that I see your topic title mentions keeping paragraphs together, I have to wonder if you mean keeping one paragraph with another (which "keep all lines together" won't do, because it only controls the lines within a single paragraph).
The screenshot in your second post shows all lines of the highlighted paragraph together on a page, but I think you're getting at the fact that you don't like the large gap on the previous page. If that's the case, it's a matter of fitting what you have into the space you have. You either need more space, or less text. If you are the author of this text, and you have the option of re-wording it to make it fit, that's one solution. If not, you can try things like adjusting the tracking, character width, font size, leading, or any other things that would make the text smaller. Or, you could change the page size or margins to give yourself more room for the text to fit into.
Personally, I don't think it's bad to have a paragraph span a page break (or a column break, for that matter). If you are working under a rule where that is not permitted, then maybe the large gap is something you will have to accept. Generally, if you set the keep options to some number of lines at the beginning of the paragraph, and some number of lines at the end of the paragraph (other than one line, that is), you won't get widows and orphans, and your text should be OK.
If I still haven't taken your meaning, please post back with clarification, and I'll try to give it another whack.

  • HP UPD 5.3 - some clients print garbage

    Server: Windows 2008 R2 SP1.
    Clients: XP SP3.
Yesterday I upgraded from HP UPD PS 5.2.6.9321 to 5.3.1.10527.  This morning I find out that tons of users are now printing "garbage".  This garbage is actually raw PostScript code from all types of applications.  The kicker to this problem
is that it appears to be PC and/or user based.  For example, WorkstationA prints out garbage but WorkstationB prints just fine -- they both are using the same queue on the print server.  Deleting all HP printers from the client and
re-installing from the print server does not fix it.  If I change the print driver on the print server for the problem queue from HP Universal Printing PS (v5.3) to HP Universal Printing PS (v5.2), then the XP clients can print just fine again.
I've contacted HP and found out that other clients are reporting this problem too.  Awesome.
While I wait for HP to investigate/resolve the problem, what would cause some XP clients to print raw postscript while others work fine?

    Dear Customer,
    Thank you for posting here!
After reading your post, I still have a few questions not very clear. Please let me know some information as below:
    1. Please capture a screenshot and send it to the me([email protected]).

  • Only some apps print to HP or Ikon

Okay, I am at a complete loss here and I really hope someone can help figure this out.
I am running Tiger, 10.4.10 on a G5. I just had to reinstall everything. I have a HP 5000N LaserJet and am also connected to a digital copier/printer, Ikon CCP 8050. Before the crash and ensuing reinstall everything was running fine. I have the latest drivers. I am running Quark, MS products, and all the Adobe products, as well as the Mac Mail program and Safari. I have contacted Apple (at the Genius bar), Quark, HP, and Ikon and no one can help me.
I can only print to the HP from Quark. I cannot print to the color printer from Quark.
I have the opposite problem from all of the other applications. I can print to the color printer but not to the HP (it crashes Word).
Can anyone tell me what I should try or check next? Like I said, I have the most recent drivers and all the other tech support I have received has proved useless. It seems odd to me that some programs would work and some would not.
I can supply whatever missing info you may need.
    Thank you all, in advance!

Is there a way I can only transfer some apps & folders when I choose "transfer from another Mac"?
Top-level folders in each user home folder, yes. Apps, no. See #19 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum), for details.
And you have to be very careful of apps. Complex ones, that come with their own installers, often do more than install the app in your /Applications folder; they put various files in assorted places. If you don't know where they all are, the app won't work properly, if at all (and you'll likely have to re-enter the purchase codes). Those need to be reinstalled from the original discs.

  • Border on some fields prints double

I am running into a problem in PLD on a PO Layout that I customized.  On the header fields I have a right border.  On some of the fields the border is doubled even though the fields do not overlap and as far as I can tell all the settings are correct.  At times I remove the border and frame from a field that is printing double, and then it prints single even though there should not be a border now.  It seems to randomly affect different fields.  If I fix one by removing the border then the double border seems to move to a different field?  The only thing out of the ordinary is that I have the colors set so that the background is all black (0,0,0), and the frame and text are white (255, 255, 255).  There is no Highlight set, the box is not checked.
Does anyone else have this problem or know a solution?  (this is SAP 2007 A, SP 00 , PL 15).
    Thanks,
    Don

    Don,
First thing first, you have to upgrade your PL soon since the lowest supported 2007A PL is 30. Current PL is 49 if not 50 already.
As for the border, it will be too hard to set them correctly if your background is all black.  Try to change background first.
    Thanks,
    Gordon
