Some photos jiggle when DVD played on TV

My 13:30 project is composed of jgp and png images, along with strips of m4v files exported from iPhoto. There are also two titles made with Live Type.
My problem is that when playing the burned DVD on TV, some photos jiggle. I've tried two different types (quality levels?) of media.
There's no jiggle when playing the DVD on computer, nor is there in the mov file.
What do you suspect?
Suggestions welcome.
(I may next try making a dmg file in iDVD and burn with iDisk or Roxio).
Thanks,
Terry D

OK, the problem was caused by photos that were scanned at 480dpi (supplied by my client and overlooked by me). I reduced these to 72dpi and they juggling.

  • Images jumping when DVD played on TV

I am working on a DVD slideshow project where the quality of the visual images is top priority. I am using digital photos stored in iPhoto.
I have made 4 short versions to compare the quality of the final products:
    1. used iMovie (varied transitions and times per slide) to build the slideshow then exported to iDVD and burned to disc. (I did not let iMovie render.)
    2. built the slideshow in iPhoto (varied transitions), exported to QuickTime Movie, then to iMovie and finally to iDVD.
    3. built the slideshow in iPhoto and exported to iDVD from there.
    4. used iDVD to build the entire slideshow from the iPhoto album: chose "page flip" as the transition.
The KBE was off in each case.
Version #4 looked the best on the computer monitor and so I went one step further with this one and added music - a piece stored in iTunes Library.
All four versions were burned onto the same disc and all four played smoothly on the computer; however, when I played the disc on my television, the images in version #4 'jumped' - each image was clear for only about a second. The television is HD.
Is there an explanation, and hopefully a fix, for this problem? Since the only difference between version #4 and the other three is the addition of an audio track, would that have created the problem?

I'm not sure why that is happening. You could try reburning at a lower speed and changing your disk brand to another high quality brand like Maxell or Verbatim. Make sure you have at least 10GB free disk space to burn. I doubt that the music is the cause, but you could try changing or eliminating that too, as well as eliminating or changing the transition. To adjust your burn speed you would need to save your iDVD project as a Disk Image (from the File menu), and then burn it using the Utilities/Disk Utility app on your Mac. (When you open the Disk Utility window, if your iDVD project is not displayed in the left hand pane, then drag it in there. Select it and burn.) On my computer, the burn speed defaults to 4x, which is slow enough. Alternatively, you could burn using another program like Roxio Toast, that gives you more burn speed options.
You've done some handy research, and perhaps you could share your findings. Which of the methods that you used produced the clearest images in the final burned project when you played back your DVD on your TV? (Obviously you were having trouble with the iDVD one, but you might get it working.) Others have remarked that iDVD slide shows display better on computer preview playback, but I have not seen any comments as to whether the final burned product on DVD plays any clearer than slideshows created in iPhoto or iMovie.
Sorry I can't be more help. Perhaps others on this forum will comment.

  • White bar shows at the top of the screen when dvd played on a mac.

    Hi,
I am using DVDSP 3. When I play the dvd on a mac there is a white bar at the top of the screen saying the marker names. If I watch the same dvd on the dvd player hooked up with my tv, it plays fine and does not show any extra area the white bar at the top. Is there any way I can prevent this from happening?

Do worry about it. It sounds like you have coded with the "text track" of the .mov file left superimposed onto the pictures. If you open your original .mov in Quicktime, you can turn off the text track. Then save a reference Quicktime file, and then use this to make your .mp2. Alternatively, change your marker settings when you do a FCP playout (assuming you are using FCP) - turn off the marker export; or make sure that you have chosen compatible settings for your version of DVD SP3. Also, you can write down the timecodes, and put your Chapter markers into DVD SP3 by hand.

  • No sound when DVD played on TV

Hi, I don't know if anyone can help.
I am new to creating DVD's, but did this weekend - my band's promo movie. I created the movie and rendered it to High Quality via iMovie HD - the movie includes the audio.
I burnt the DVD by Roxio Toast 6 via an external DVD writer (that always defaults to NTSC format, althugh I am UK based and tried choosing the PAL option to no avail).
When the DVD was put in the Mac it played fine with audio. When put in my DVD player to view on TV, the DVD plays as normal EXCEPT there is no sound!
Does anyone have any ideas why this might be the case, and if there is a solution that doesn't cost squillions of pounds?
    Many thanks!
    Ian

It sounds like your PAL DVD player doesn't like to play NTSC discs.
Take a look at: Exporting your movie for viewing in a PAL or NTSC format at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/HD/en/im110.html
Note it says When you first create a new project in iMovie HD, you can select a video format for the project.
BTW, with Toast 6: select the Video tab. To the left of the window you should see Advanced - Select Advanced - then under Options, select PAL.

  • Why are still photos blurry when I play movie?

I am making a video slideshow using Adobe Premiere Elements 9. Most of the video is made up still photos. When I playback the video the still photos are blurry. What should I do to prevent this? Thanks!

I read your article Bill, and that just seems like a massive amount of work for the average individual who wants to put together a movie. Is all of that really necessary?
With PS, or PSE, and Scaling Actions, one can do batch processing of entire folders of images in moments. That linked article gives setup tips for doing batch scaling very easily, and the Action, plus Automate to Batch, will work on entire folders. My workstation will automatically process ~ 500 4000x3000 pixel images to 720x480 in about 2 mins.
There are two benefits when Scaling stills in an image processing program, prior to Import into an NLE (Non Linear Editor) program:
The processing overhead is greatly reduced
The quality is greatly improved, as the Scaling algorithms in an image processing program, are much better *
If one wants to let the NLE program do the processing, and one has many large images (especially at still camera resolutions), then they WILL need a very powerful computer.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
    * PrPro, as of CS5, has improved the quality of Scaling, but the overhead issue still exists.

  • No stereo when DVD plays back on DVD player

I create a fair amount of photo/slideshows and then burn it all with music onto a DVD.
In the past, the playback was always in stereo, but now the playback is in dismal mono sound!...
I could be my new HD digital television set and I'll just have to explore that also. But when I did get ready to "burn" my dvd, I was given a "prompt" that gave me the choice of "how" I wanted to do this.
I recall it asked me if "a data burn" was okay. I do recall that I also saw an "MP3" option also.
Could this be the problem. I'm not sure if this audio prompt came from "idvd", itunes, or "imovie"..
    Any suggestions?.
    thanks...

Another possibility is, the TV that you have has all the color taken out. To find out I would see if the TV plays anything else in color. If it plays cable TV input and the input from the DVD Player in black and white then the problem is probably a setting in the TV. But if the black and white problem is only occurring with the input from the DVD Player the problem is either 1)Mac-onga is right and the plugs are put in the wrong inputs on the back/front of the TV OR 2)there is a black and white setting on the DVD player.
    Hope this helps,
    TC

  • No pictures are displayed when I play slide show

no photos appear when I play slideshow. The screen is black

    Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.
    2 - Run Option #1, Repair Permission

  • Iphoto.  When I play an album "slideshow" some photos show up as a blank/black screen.  Please help if you know what I am doing wrong.

    Iphoto Question
When I playing a "slideshow" album, a few photos show up as a blank screen.  Also, when I select a photo in an album to make it full screen - some photos won't "hold" - they go full screen for about a second, then the screen goes blank.  Any ideas about what I am doing wrong?  Thank you.

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). (On iPhoto 11 this option is under the File -> Reveal in Finder.) Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/ Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
If none of these help: As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • When I burn a slideshow from wondershare fantashow the music is to loud even when I play it on the tv and turn the tv down the music burned on the dvd is still too loud and has a vibrating sound like too much volume.

Hello does anybody know about wondershare fantashow for mac? when I burn a slide show to a dvd the music is too loud. then when i play it on my tv and turn my tv volume down the music on the dvd is still vibrating too loud. How do I adjust that in fatashow before I burn it to dvd? thank you

Hadn't heard of it before today!
There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
(Other users here use the alternative FotoMagico:  http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/homevspro/ which you may prefer - I have no experience with it.)
Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie  as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, including adding other video clips, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast,  for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!
To simply create a slide show in iDVD 7 onwards from images in iPhoto or stored in other places on your hard disk or a connected server, look here:

  • I recently tried to burn some photos to a disc.  It did not work, but then I ended up with a .fpbf folder on my desktop.  Can't trash it, and when trying to burn again, I get this "... can't be burned because the original items can't be found". Help???

I recently tried to burn some photos on a CD. For some reason, It did not work.  Now I have a .fpbf folder on my desktop. I can't seem to get rid of it.  I tried dragging it to the trash, but then I get a box asking my to type my password it, so Finder can make the changes.  Doing so, does nothing at all.  And when I try to burn another CD from the same .fpbf file, I get a the following message: "There are 35 items that can’t be burned because the original items can’t be found. Skip the items and continue burning?".   When I skip and continue burning, nothing shows up on the CD.  In the meantime, the .fpbf folder is still in my desktop.  I tried changing the aliases on each pic, but it still doesn't work.  Any ideas of how I can remove this folder from my desktop?
    Thank you.

    Beavis2084,
Thank you for your detailed explanation but something is seriously wrong with my computer. Although the method you have described is very similar to the one I tried in step 2 from my second post, I have since "done things" which may have complicated matters—or suggests that my computer has a more serious problem.
    Here's what I did:
1). Installed Onyx and discovered that I had a .plist file (com.apple.iphotomosaic.plist) that was causing a Syntax error: "Conversion of data failed. The file is not UTF-8, or in the encoding specified in XML header, if XML." After doing some research online, I was given the understanding that downloading the iLife update 9.0.3 (I installed the more recent version, 9.0.4) would solve this problem because it would also fix some system issues. So, I downloaded it...and when it didn't solve the problem, I decided to just deleted that .plist file.
2). I read your knew post and decided to follow your directions, even though I realized they were basically the same steps I followed in the 2nd method I mentioned earlier. I say "basically" because, for some reason, after inserting a blank disc, my computer does not open the disc in the Finder. Instead, it places the blank disc's image on the Desktop, even though the Finder's Preferences and the System's Preferences are set to have it open in the Finder—nothing should be on my Desktop! (Note: When transferring the items (all folders) I want to burn to the blank disc, I did not use the Option-Click-Drag method as before, I used the Click-Drag method, which created the curved arrow in the lower left corner of each item.)
Now, for the result of "method 2," the method we basically have in common, the computer goes through the burn stage but, in the verify stage, tells me that it is unable to verify the disk, suggests that my DVD may be unreliable and that I should try another disc, and then tells me about some "fork" (?) error (-43).
I don't know what to do anymore...

  • Playing Photo CD on DVD Player

Each year I burn to a CD my digital photos stored in my iPhoto albums. When I play them on a DVD player, I always get identical consecutive photos, only one of which plays/shows. The other creates a blank screen for the five seconds that each photo plays. How can I eliminate the duplicate/second photo from the CD? This glitch has always happened no matter which DVD player I use, and no matter which version of iPhoto I have used over the past 5 years (currently using v6.0.5). Can anyone explain and offer a solution?

    nedhead:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I think it is the resource fork of the image file. The “resource fork” contains special instructions for the creator application or the computer’s operating system. They get included with each file. PC's don't use a resource fork and sending image files to PC results in the second file. There are applications to strip that resource fork. You can search at VersionTracker.com for "resource". One that I've used is GrimRipperCM.
I think that should get rid of your mystery files on the Photo CD.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • I made an album in iPhoto and when it plays through the "slideshow", heads are cut off in some of the pictures.  How do I fix this?

I made an album in iPhoto and when it plays through the "slideshow", heads are cut off in some of the pictures.  How do I fix this?

When running a slideshow from an album it will not run properly if the photos are sorted manually.  Sort them by any of the other options, title, date, rating, etc. and it will play correctly.
Send a report of the problem to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.
If you must sort them manually create the slideshow in the slideshow mode in iPhoto, not from an album.

  • "Some photos need to be prepared to view them at full size" message when starting slideshow

I'm pretty new to iPhoto so I'm sorry if these questions are obvious to you, but they're not to me!
From the "Photos" section on iPhoto, with no photos selected, I accidentally started a slideshow with all my photos by pressing the play button on the keyboard and got this message:
"Some photos need to be prepared to view them at full size. Do you want to continue using the current size or prepare the photos so that only full size images are used? This may take some time." With these options: Cancel / Prepare Photos / Continue Playback.
I pressed "Esc" on the keyboard and it clicked "Prepare Photos" instead of "Cancel" as I expected, it started the process and I clicked "Cancel" to stop it, and the slideshow started. When the slideshow was playing, everything froze, I pressed cmd-alt-esc, no window appeared and iPhoto quit immediately. Could it have caused damages to the library? Could it be a reason to restore the iPhoto Library from Time Machine? I didn't get any error message when I reopened iPhoto.
Not to leave the process incomplete later I decided to start another slideshow and this time I clicked "Prepare Photos" and let it complete the process. Now when I start another slideshow I don't get that message anymore.
I have no idea what this process did to my photos and couldn't find an answer anywhere. This library is very important to me, so I'm wondering if I should restore the iPhoto Library from a Time Machine backup.
Could canceling the process the first time have caused any damage to my photos?
What is this preparation? What did it do to my photos? Have my photos been resized, or somehow modified?
    Thanks

Ok, thank you very much. I still don't know exactly what the "preparation" did to my photos but now I guess that nothing bad happened. Thanks

  • Audio goes in and out of sync when burned dvd played on standard DVD player

I made a short film recently (7:00 mins) and once completed and burned to DVD using iDVD and DVD Studio Pro about 20% of the clips have out of sync audio. Just slightly out of sync. Some more noticeable than others.
Playing off the timeline syncs perfect, the exported prores 422 mov file syncs perfectly, and if the finished DVD is played on my mac or my pc the sync is perfect, but when played on a standard dvd player to my TV I get the syncing problem, but only at certain points through the film. As I said, about 20% of it. The rest of the film is fine.
Shot on Canon 5d mkII - footage converted to prores 422 1920x1080. Audio recorded on Zoom H4N with some ADR recorded on logic pro. Audio synced manually using clapper board reference. Using a 27'iMac with current OSX update as of 14 March 2011. Edited in FCP 7, exported to proress 422, burned to DVD with current iDVD and DVD Studio Pro, all current versions and updates.
I have tried exporting to mpg4 and mpg2 - no joy. I checked audio bit rates and discovered the logic recorded stuff was 44.1khz as opposed to 48, so I converted to 48 but still no fix.
    I am STUMPPED
    Any suggestions?
    Cheers
    Dallas

Should I convert just the clips which are out of sync in the DVD, or all of theclips in the FCP timeline?
If that is the issue, wouldn't I have the problem in the final prores mov as opposed to just when its played dvd to tv?
Ill try it though. Its an odd problem so its likely to have an odd solution. Willing to try anything at this point.
    Thank you.
