Some photos misses some EXIF data

Hello,
I'm wondering why some of the photos on my iPhone are missing some EXIF information like the date when the photo was taken or the GPS data.
All the photos were taken with the default camera app and were copied to the Mac via iPhoto and Imagecapture. So what happened? Are the EXIF data really LOST?

I have this same issue. It seems that more photos are being recorded without time/date and camera info than with this info.
I hope someone can help us fix this issue asap!
Thanks!

When exporting a photo to photo library, all EXIF data is lost.
    What rational is behind this?

Thanks for your reply on this!
One issue seems to be with Foto Library app itself. When running an auto-correct there it looks like EXIF will be stripped more or less completely.
Second issue is in iPhoto app on iOS when working on RAW. When exporting to the roll the EXIF is modified in a way. It was keeping most of the EXIF in case of Canon 5D MKII that I tested today, but the EXIF data is definately changed, e.g. lens type is different because maybe some fields are ignored there. Also the images are silently scaled down by 50% which is kind of annoying.
The initial problem was observed with a Pentax K7 and I will need to reproduce the issue in this config I assume. Maybe tomorrow I can do this.

  • Some Photos Missing

Quite a few photos have gone missing from my library.
I first noticed (0) next to the album and then looked in the library, but they are missing there also.
If I go through the finder, the photo names are there but Zero kB size. Some of the thumbs have an image and some not.
I went back with Time Machine, but its just the same. To add insult to injury, the CD I backed them up on is unreadable.
Is there any way to locate and restore the missing photos?
    I'm using iPhoto 5.0.4.

There's lots of space on the disk and only these few photos (all of which date to 2004) are affected.
As I said in the original post, I have copies of the photos on a CD, but can't read the disk on a Mac, although Windows can. I posted that question in a different thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7042778#7042778
Any solution to either problem would be great!

  • Some photo's have wrong date on iPhone after importing them. Messes up 'moments' in photo's

When importing photo's from my Mac using iTunes, some of them display the incorrect date in the Moments catagory on my iPhone 5S (7.0.3). For example some photo's say 8th June 2001, when they should say 8th June 2012.
In iPhoto on my Mac these photo's orignally had the incorrect date on them, but I changed them all using Photos > Adjust Time And Date and are all fine in iPhoto.
But when I try and sync them again in iTunes, they are still displaying the incorrect date in Photos on my 5S.
    Any help would be appreciated

Had the same Issue and went digging a bit deeper.
It seems that the Collection Feature doesnt grab the EXIF date correctly all the time or relies on the date created of the file directly for some reasons (not sure though).
What you can do to get this fixed:
    1. select all your photos in iPhoto
    2. Menu: Photos -> Adjust Date and Time
        Select Modify Original Files
    3. Go up for 1 Second on ALL photos
    4. Sync again
    5. Go down for 1 SEcond on ALL photos
    6. Sync again
In my case it was indeed necessary to sync in between changing the time for 1 second. might work without for you.

  • Missing/Corrupt EXIF Data

I was looking at a folder of images today, and noticed that the camera data was not showing up and the images looked out of focus. Moments later the camera data showed up but the images still looked blurry (thumbs). Suddenly all the thumbs in the folder disappeared, being replaced by the .nef icon. I mean instantly, they all changed to the icon. I tried to open but got the message:
"Could not complete the request because it is not the right kind of document. "
So I tried to open it using DXO and it returned :
"This image cannot be processed since its EXIF data cannot be read or is missing".
Right click the image and the File Info is missing from the menu.
How does this happen? I have opened these images in the past. I can imagine the instant insanity should all my .nef's suddenly do this!
I am using Bridge running Photoshop CC on Win 7 64 bit. The .xmp data exists according to Win Explorer. There is no Bridge cache showing for the folder in Win explorer.
I am unsure as to whether this belongs here or in Bridge or???

I don’t think WFW would know about any outsider accessing the file on dropbox since it runs on your local computer.  If this is the first time you’ve used dropbox, it may have been asking for permission for dropbox to access your local system via the public network (there are local, domain and public tiers in the firewall rules) since dropbox synchronizes things between computers via the data stored in the dropbox cloud storage.
In other words, I downloaded the file to my local computer using the public link you provided, and wasn’t logged in as you, so would have been accessing the dropbox cloud for retrieve the file but not be logged in as you, but I don’t think the WFW would know I was doing anything for that interaction because that is between me and the cloud, not something on your local computer.  Depending on how you answered the WFW question, you may have blocked dropbox from doing its normal things.  You can get into the WFW configuration in Admin Tools (or maybe Control Panel) and enable things for a particular program that you may have disabled by mistake.
Back to the corrupted file issue:  spot-check a few of the bad files on the backup, right-click Properties, and look at the Created Date and Modified Date, compared to the expected date the backup first would have copied them, to see if either indicates the date the zeros were written.  You might want to compare those dates on files that are ok, to see if there is some difference in pattern.  It is possible the backup software updates those dates to be what the source files dates are which might mask the backup-software's last-copy date, which is what you want.
If you can determine the date for the zeros and it is fairly recent, then the system event log might list something as having occurred.
If there haven't been any viruses, then I'd say it was a transient condition, either in the circuit-boards or cabling or the hard-drive media, itself.
Has the computer ever locked up so you had to turn the power off to get control back of the mouse?
You can test the hard-drive media for errors by chkdsk d: /r or chkdsk d: /b (or the gui-scandisk equivalents) to scan for data errors--iffy media problems.  Move any virtual-memory swapfile off that drive if you want to test it while the computer is running.  Maybe do a plain chkdsk, first, one where you don't fix problems and don't test the media, which would find problems indicated with zeros in the directory-structure, first.  And if you find any of those, disconnect your backup drive in case the "fixes" corrupt even more things and that gets replicated.
A chkdsk that fixes media problems will likely take several/many hours.

  • Editing with the iOS 8 Photos app strips EXIF data from photos.

The new iOS 8 Photos app has some nice editing features and extensions from other apps is a good idea, however any editing done strips out all of the EXIF data from the photo.

I have the same problem. It's awful; if you edit and upload georeferencing and other stuff is lost. Fail.
It didn't strip it when I edited in Snapseed and then saved back to the photo library.

  • GPS Altitude Not in Extended Photo Info or EXIF Dat ahwne exported

    Hi,
I have my own website that uses a Goggle Maps plugin to read and show GPS info for photos I upload. When I use Places to capture that info the Altitude info is not stored either in iPhoto's database or in the EXIF info for the photo when exported. Is there anyway get this info stored in the database and phot when exported?
The Google Maps plugin on my site makes use of the Altitude details to show a more close up image depending on the altitude chosen. Without this info the site just shows a extremely high level world map with a pin showing in the country where the picture was taken. Not particularly useful. So I have to go and edit each file on my website and manually add this info. Which is very time consuming.

    Jennec
iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback
There is no provision in iPhoto to add altitude at this time - iPhoto should maintain the EXIF data that is imported - if it is not then I certainly would report that as a bug
When I show extended photo info in iPhoto for photos it shows the altitude - I presume it exports - will test later

  • Weg Gallery: Some photos downloadable, some not

    Dear Forum,
I have an odd one here: I have a (password protected) Web Gallery I regularly update with new photos. It now turns out that all images I uploaded up to around a week ago are downloadable, the latest ones consistently aren't. I would like them all to be downloadable.
No settings have changed on the one computer (Macbook Pro) that I use to publish the web gallery. I have seen similar threads on this topic within this forum, but with no answer so far. I have followed one recommendation, to change the Web Gallery setting to make all images not-downloadable, synchronize, and make them downloadable again. No difference! I have the latest iPhoto version.
The consequence of this nuisance is that other iPhoto libraries which subscribe to this web gallery only get a small image downloaded (320x211 pixels).
Am I right in assuming this is an iPhoto bug? I cannot see any other setting I can change, and there is no distinction whatsoever between the photos - all are taken by the same camera over the past 3 weeks. There is no reason that I see for this sudden change in behavior.
    Thanks a lot in advance!

I've seen this too, but even with non-updated galleries - some photos are downloadable, some not.
I think the servers may be unstable or there are errors in updating the status of individual images.
I suspect it's a 'bug' of sorts but I've no idea if it's iPhoto or the server end.
Also there seems to be an issue with uploaded 'originals' getting re-sized. My Canon photos are 3504 wide but get changed to 3054 wide for download (heigh scaled to preserve aspect ratio). These originals will be 1/6th of the size of library originals.
It's not ideal but another poster mentioned that deleting the web gallery then re-publishing corrected things - not an ideal solution but may be worth a shot - maybe you could create an album which gets published as a web gallery to allow for easy updates of a gallery from different events.

  • How do you export photos and movies from iPhoto to your iPhone? I synced the device and noticed that some photos and some movies from iPhoto on my laptop were not transferred to my iPhone.

How do you export photos and movies from iPhoto to your iPhone?  I synced the devices and noticed that some photos and movies on my laptop iPhoto were not transferred to my iPhone?

I am not sure, which answer you found - so just in case:
If you sync your iPhone with the iPhoto library, the photos will only stay on the iPhone until the next sync and they are not in the Camera Roll. If you transfer using the Photo Stream, they will only be vidsible in the stream, until they are replaced in iCloud by newer content.
So, if you want to transfer the photos permanently, save them to the Camera Roll.

  • Some photos missing since Time Machine restore...

    Hi All,
I have been looking through the forum to find an answer to this, but I haven't seen anyone else with this exact problem.
    2009 iMac, Snow Leopard
I had to erase my drive and do a clean install. That went well, and I used Time Machine, and Migration assistant to bring all of my users, docs and media back in.
When I open iPhoto some of the thumbnails in the events browser are missing. Just a gray box. If I double click the Event, a window opens and I can see the thumbnails of the photos in that event. If I click on one of the thumbnails, I get the white exclamation point.
    It get's weirder...
All the photos that are missing seem to be ones taken with our iPhones. Not every photo from the iPhones is missing however, only some, mostly recent, but a couple of 2008 events too, just to further confuse things . All the photos we imported from our regular camera are all still there.
    It gets weirder...
When I first open iPhoto, if I quickly scroll down in the events browser to the area of missing thumbnails, I can see all of the thumbnails for a brief moment, then they disappear. This doesn't happen every time, only occasionally.
If I hover over the gray event boxes, the pop up still tells me the date and number of photos in the event. Those numbers match the number of thumbs in the event when I double click, but I just can't open the photo.
I have tried rebuilding the thumbnails and searching for orphaned photos.
I have not tried rebuilding from the auto backup, because I recently restored the whole system and didn't know if I still had a "good" auto back-up and didn't want to inadvertently screw things up further...
I am really at a loss here and would appreciate any suggestions...
    Thanks in advance!

The exclamation point is an indication that the library has lost the link to the original file. Run the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #4,5 and 6.
    Fix #2
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos.
    Fix #3
Start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
    1. Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.

  • IPhoto '09 - Some Photos Missing?

I recently used time machine to back-up the contents of my iMac. Everything seemed to go well enough, no problems.
I was using the computer for the first time since the back-up, and went into iPhoto only to realize that some of my photos are missing. Two events are completely gone from iPhoto, and I have no idea what happened.
Any ideas? I tried launching iPhoto while holding option & command in an attempt to rebuild the library, but that doesn't seem to have done anything.
Also, I tried opening the old library from time machine (by holding option and launching iPhoto) but the missing events aren't in the back-up, either.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Exactly same story here - did you manage to solve the problem?
Luckily I restored backup to the new disk, so still could recover pictures from the old one, but makes me wonder - if my disk breaks for any reason, it's very hard for me to trust Time Machine now...
When browsing through the TM backup file, it appears that original pictures are simply not there (and no library rebuild is going to change that i'm afraid...)

  • After updating iMovie, some clips missing/some in wrong project

After updating iMovie to 10.0.3, clips from various projects are intermingled.  In some projects, clilps are missing.  In others, there might be two clips from a different projects in the project.
I took my MBAir and an external drive to the Apple Store for a One on One; the creative consult was baffled.  He said he'd just started, and had never seen this problem.  He gave me his name, asked me to make another appt, andto  ask for him.  He said he'd do some research.  In the meantime, he suggested I write the forum, see if anyone else had this problem, and if so what the fix might be?
In the meantime, any suggestions/ideas welcome.
    Thanks, Hal

Quite a number of people are reporting clips disappearing fom events, especially if they have used the "Adjust date and Time" function, so  I am beginning to think that there is a real bug that has been introduced with iMovie 10.0.3. (I have not experienced this problem myself but I have not done much in iMovie since updating having moved on to FCP).
I have not heard before of clips moving to different projects though.   is your problem only with clips in the timelines or do they disappear from events completely?
    Geoff.

  • Some photos gone, some not?

I was trying to free up some space on my computer. I did the following: I went to the "Search For"on my hard drive sidebar (Today, Yesterday, Last Week, All images, All documents, etc) I clicked on "Search For" all images selected some and dragged them to the trash. I then checked in iPhoto to make sure my originals were there and they were so I emptied the trash.
Now when I go to iPhoto the title of photo shows up, and the frame. The photo shows up at first but when I click on it, either an exclamation point shows up or nothing.
I have done this before (trashed photos from the "Search For" area) and not had this problem.
What have I done and how do I get my pics back?
Thanks so much for any help. Even redirecting me to other posts and answers would be greatly appreciated.
    Julee

I then checked in iPhoto to make sure my originals were there and they were so I emptied the trash.
    How did you do this?
Now when I go to iPhoto the title of photo shows up, and the frame. The photo shows up at first but when I click on it, either an exclamation point shows up or nothing.
this is an indication of corruption of the iPhoto library which is most often caused by user modification of the iPhoto Library
I did the following: I went to the "Search For"on my hard drive sidebar (Today, Yesterday, Last Week, All images, All documents, etc) I clicked on "Search For" all images selected some and dragged them to the trash.
Were the photos you deleted in the iPhoto Library? If they were the reason they are gone it that you "dragged them to the trash"
What have I done and how do I get my pics back?
Do you have a current backup? If you do load it.
Go to your pictures folder and right click (control click on a single button mouse) on the iPhoto library package and select show package contents - open the originals folder and look - DO NOT MAKE ANY MODIFICATIONS or deletions - to see if your photos are there.
If they are not you need to get some file recovery software and try to undelete the photos you trashed.
If they are in the originals folder you can make a new library and populate it with those photos as follows
    1 - quit iPhoto
2 - drag the iPhoto library to the desktop
3 - launch iPhoto and allow it to create a new library
4 - drag the originals folder onto the iPhoto icon in the dock
This will import all of the photos in the originals folder to your new working iPhoto library
In the future never change anything in the iPhoto library from the finder or any program except iPhoto - and always keep a good, current backup

  • Some files missing, some not.

Okay, there are similar posts but mine seems to be different then the others. I recently moved some files, but not my iTunes folder that I use and now iTunes won't find the majority of my files.
Here's what I did. I have a Buffalo Link Station Pro that I use to host my music and TV shows(on a drive that's attached to it via USB). I recently bought a third external drive to replace the other USB drive that's attached. In doing so I unplugged the music drive so I could move files (since the LS uses XFS, I had to attach them and do it that way) over from the other drive. This worked fine so I removed the old, smaller drive and hooked up my music/iTunes drive again, into the same USB plug with the same name and the same locations (my iTunes was off during this whole process so it wouldn't look for the files during this).
When the drive was back up and mounted, I restarted iTunes. Exclamation points. No problem, right? I went to preferences (it returned to default) and redirected to the appropriate folder. Now it finds about 1 out of every 15 songs. Really strange. I've got tons of songs and tons of smart playlists sorted by ranking and I desperately do not want to re-rank them.
Message was edited by: Mark Leszczynski1

Yes, it's weird that unplugging a drive with iTunes not running, then re-connecting, should cause a problem. However, those ! are not coming from the music files but from the iTunes Library database file which holds all the paths to each and every song. Pointing your Preferences to the Music Folder will only do part of the job - if something happened to that Library file, that's a separate issue.
I'm puzzled why your Preferences reverted to default. That shouldn't have happened.
Do you have a backup of your iTunes Library file somewhere? If so, copying that back to the iTunes folder may resolve this.

  • Some tracks missing, some tabs didn't become collections

Editing my recently migrated public site (straight public-to-public migration), I discovered that tracks were missing. Digging deeper, it's clear that tracks added to our old public site after mid-2010 didn't get published to the new public site.
Also, several tabs in the old site didn't become collections in the new. Again, Im thinking it's all tabs created after summer 2010.
I know I checked out the Public Site Manager back in summer 2010, but I don't see how I could have done anything then to lock subsequent uploads to the old site out of publishing to the new -- I didn't publish to the new until just over a week ago.
Help, please. Do I need to re-upload all recent tracks?

No replies yet. I'm still hoping, but I have to start re-uploading files -- which may be even uglier than I thought, since the .mp4 files that published successfully to the old site return 'unsupported filetype' errors in the new. Sigh.
