Some Preferences not sticking ie screen saver jump back to random after setting a particular screen saver

I set a specific screen saver in the preferences file, after a reboot, random savers box is always checked. Also when I move items to the side bar they stay there until a start-up after which they have disappeared.
Thx  AL

I think that it is something wrong with kernel and graphic drivers but i'm not able to solve it from the beginning of using of Arch by me.
I'm not so sure this issue is software-related only because in my case it seems the laptop screen enters power-saving mode (10-min timeout) on its own without any events logged (as shown by dmesg) so my next thought was OK, I'm going to get rid of this issue disabling the screen power-saving timeout in the BIOS and set it to never power down or something like that and from then on managing power mode manually; ie: when I want to power down I will just use systemctl suspend/hibernate which work fine ... problem is: there are no related options in my BIOS for such timeout.
The only timeouts I have are in /etc/systemd/logind.conf set to 30min (#IdleActionSec) (commented) by default so these are not in effect because the screens goes blank after 10m which is less than the (default) 30m in logind. Maybe setting loggind to 9m (un-commented) to catch the event before the machine-default one ?
IdleActionSec=9min
IdleAction=suspend
Will check it and report back.

  • Mail preferences not sticking

I access iCloud email via the web when I'm at work (Win XP SP3 + latest release of Chrome).  Recently (as in over the past couple weeks, give or take) my preferences (not showing images in HTML email, default email address for sending, show BCC, etc.) are not sticking permanently.  Sometimes I make/save the changes and they stay for days; other times (like this morning) they don't even stay set for an hour.  My rules are always there, but the other preferences need to be reset periodically -- and seemingly randomly -- to their default values.
I have deleted all cookies, cleared the cache, etc.  I have not tried another browser because (1) it could be days between "resets" and I don't want to have to use another browser for that long just for troubleshooting and (2) I need this to work in Chrome, so whether it works in another browser is more or less moot.  No matter what troubleshooting steps I've taken, the problem recurs unpredictably.  It is very frustrating because I have to keep a constant eye on the "From" address when replying or sending new messages to mailing lists I'm on (which reject messages from the address that iCloud defaults to), plus with the option defaulting to "On" to show images in HTML email, I'm opening myself up to even more spam than usual.
    So two questions:
Is anyone else having this same issue?
Why are these preferences apparently stored in cookies rather than persisting on Apple's server?  Or if they ARE on Apple's server, why do I have to keep changing them back periodically?
    Thanks,
    Brent

As follow-up, just since I posted this message and without reloading the iCloud tab, restarting the browser, or anything like that, the preferences have once again reverted themselves less than an hour after I changed them.

  • Some sites not filling in screens

Some sites show the full screen; some do not: just show the tab & a white screen! I tried going to Mozillazine to see why, but it just showed the top of the page.

  • Mail preferences not sticking and sometimes change on their own.

Maybe somebody else has seen this odd behavior. Here's the scoop:
I clean installed 10.5.1 yesterday on my Mac Mini(1.42GHz G4, 1GB RAM)and after setting up my admin account, I immediately grabbed the 10.5.2 through Software Update. This is my first taste of Leopard and so far so good.
Now that everything is updated, I started to configure Mail. I set up two IMAP accounts in Mail and specified certain preferences under Mailbox Behaviors. I unchecked all the boxes that had to do with storing things on the servers. Since my IMAP account quotas are fairly small, ~150MB, I don't want Mail storing anything on my company's servers. Saved the changes and started logging in to my accounts. Tested it out by sending a few messages and noticed my sent messages and deleted messages were being saved on the server. Back in to Mail preferences I go and I noticed that some of the check boxes under Mailbox Behaviors had checkmarks back in them. What gives? I didn't leave those boxes checked. Why had several of the checkmarks reappeared?
Anyways, I've toyed with this thing for hours. It's seems to be a random problem and I don't have any clue why it happens. I've even deleted my own com.apple.mail.plst file and Mail folder multiple times to start over from scratch. I always uncheck the "store xxx on the server" boxes, but occasionally Mail turns them back on. It's happened multiple times now, so I'm getting a little paranoid about it. The last time it happened, I found the "Store draft messages on the server" re-checked under one of the IMAP accounts.
Seems like Mail.app has a mind of its own. Any idea how to put a stop to it?

I've done some more testing and found out several things.
    1. It doesn't matter which of my IMAP accounts I configure Mail to access. I can reset Mail (by deleting my ~/Library/Mail folder and com.apple.mail.plist file) and then reconfigure my preferences for each IMAP sever. The problem still persists.
    2. It definitely is a 10.5.2 problem. I erased the HD and reinstalled 10.5.1 from DVD onto my PowerBook G4 and then ran Mail. Configured it to access my IMAP accounts and had not problems with it. It didn't reset my "Mailbox Behaviors" preferences at all. In fact, it worked the way it's supposed to. On to step 3.
    3. I then installed the 10.5.2 combo updater(dl'ed from Apple's support website) and ran Mail. With the previous accounts still configured, it didn't mess with my "Mailbox Behaviors" at all, but when I reset Mail (by dumping my Mail folder and prefs into the trash) and reconfigured it for my IMAP accounts, the problem came back.
    4. With a fresh reset of my Mail preferences in 10.5.2, the very first email I send cannot be found in any folder until I quit out of Mail and then come back in. Checking my "Mailbox Behavior" prefs, I see that Mail has decided to put the check mark back in the "Store Sent Messages on the Server". That's not the way I set it up in the begining. This weird behviors repeats itself on the first draft message I save and the first email message I delete out of my Inbox. Mail always causes the first draft and deleted message to disappear until I quit and come back in. The "Mailbox Bevaior" prefs also get reset for storing drafts and deleted messages on the server.
So there we have it. Many hours spent on this thing. If others want to try it out in 10.5.2, just move your Mail folder and plst file out of your home folder temporarily and re-run Mail. Put your settings in, uncheck a few boxes under "Mailbox Behaviors" and see if Mail starts messing up.
I guess I'll be waiting for this problem to be resolved in 10.5.3. Until then, its back to 10.5.1 for me.

  • Various Preferences not "sticking"

Having been a long time Mac user since the 80's starting with an SE, I have to say that I've never had so many problems with various preferences not saving after a major upgrade. It began with 10.4 with the annoying Finder views not saving my meticulous sizing and placement of my icons in a given window. I had to do a "clean" install to regain that ability after upgrading from 10.4 to 10.5.
Now with 10.6, after upgrading, there are NUMEROUS preferences not holding as well as annoying bugs: 1) Finder window sizing and icon placement; 2) sound output to direct to Digital Out; 2) Startup Disk starting up with all drive's highlighted; 3) Start Disk not showing any Boot Camp/Windows partitions/drives.
Those are the major ones off the top of my head.
The only way to resolve this was to yet another completely "clean" install on a brand new drive and manually install all my applications and copy my preferences.
This is absolutely HORRIBLE having to constantly do clean installs. I used to kid my Winblows using friends whenever they had to upgrade or resinstall their OS from scratch. But now in the past several major revisions of OS X, I, too, have had to spend DAYS with a clean install.
I have better things to do with my life than spend a whole weekend and more, on top of having to buy another hard drive in order to do a clean install and copy over all the old settings from the old hard drive.
Is everyone else beginning to experience these same OS X upgrade headaches?
Am I simply to toss my entire preferences (and perhaps Application Support) folder to see if this solves various issues?
Like I said, I have better things to do with my life than wasting it troubleshooting annoying OS X bugs.

The first upgrade from 10.4 to 10.5 was on a G5 Dually 2.5. The Finder views not saving was only resolved by clean install. Perhaps it was a dysfunctional machine in some unforeseen way, but it worked just fine until the upgrade.
The next upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6 was on a brand new 2008 Mac Pro 8-core 2.8. I say brand new because I just a fresh install of 10.5 and all applications when this computer replaced the dead G5 and then I deployed for a year and with a machine I used for maybe a total of 2 light duty hours over an entire year, did an in-stride upgrade to 10.6 and immediately had these issues, well, how dysfunctional can a machine get with practically no usage and now third party utilities (previously known as system extensions in the pre-X word)?
I upgraded my MBP in-stride to 10.6 and luckily nothing bad to report so far.
Regarding your unspoken suggestions, I already took the most painful of resolutions by starting on a brand new drive and installing the OS and every single application cleanly one by one. So there is no alternative suggestion that you could have had that would have evoked as much fury as the frustration experiencing with individually installing years of collected software, and setting my work spaces the way I had it before. A whole weekend shot.
I tried deleting .DS_Store files using the Terminal, manually resizing the target window in question to my liking, then after closing and reopening, staring back at all my changes lost and a "default" view thrust upon me. No matter of setting permissions and correctly with Disk Utility worked. I've trashed various Finder and OS related plist files to no end.
And to anyone who tells me I have no right to vent, well then you sure don't know much about the good ol' bad days at the dawn of the "web" where flame wars were rampant for those who did not know how to tread the cyber highway.
Every consumer product should have some sort of Quality Assurance check to ensure that certain aspects are as trouble- and bug-free as possible. The user interface is definitely one of those areas I would put a high priority in thorough testing, especially management of custom settings and preferences.
Should I parse my text with the now passe </rant on/ off> explicit commands to help those skip passages that add nothing but blather and spittle to the discussion?
Are have we turned into a bunch of overly sensitive, stuck-up arrogant yahoo's that Windblows flame-baits portray us as?

  • Why do some pages not appear on screen?

My wife is using the latest version of Keynote. Apparently some pages of text are not appearing on screen when she gives presentations in schools. This has happened across several projectors but the presentation runs fine on the computer! I have met problems like this with video codecs but never just basic pages of text. I presume that things like fonts are irrelevant in this context?

Thanks for this. My wife can't remember which version she used to create the presentation. She still has both versions on board but this sometimes creates issues when she is in a classroom. I had suggested that the newer version was now maturing but it sounds like she will still need to keep both versions installed. I wonder if content could be copied and pasted into the newer version to overcome this problem? Once again thanks for your help.

  • Some Items not allowing me to save to a MP

I have noticed that a couple of things are not allowing me to save them to a custom MP before creating.  The Change Category list items and the Incident Tier Queue list items.  My question is, will these be overwritten when I upgrade?  Is
there a workaround for this?  Is this normal?

The reason you are being prompted for a custom MP is that the out of the box MP (that would be upgraded when the system is upgraded) is sealed to prevent customization that would be overwritten when the system is upgraded.
The Change Category and Incident Category are stored in Unleased MPs (the Configuration MPs) these MPs are provided, but are generally not upgraded by a version upgrade.
it's always a good idea to export all of your unsealed MPs prior to an upgrade, just in case.

  • Just Type Preferences not sticking/buggy

    No device
When I restart my phone any quick action or just type settings don't seem to stick, and I need to redo them...
    Anyone else experiencing this?

I know this is an old thread, but it seems like the bug maybe wasn't resolved and I'm experiencing it as well:
My device is the Veer, running 2.1.2. Preferences *were* sticking, but after running Doctor for an unrelated bug (voice dial wasn't working; it is now) any reordering in Just Type prefs didn't stick anymore. They would even revert before I closed the prefs card. I even uninstalled my theme and patches just to make sure they weren't screwing with anything.
It seems to me, like others have said, that they reorder to be alphabetical and with 3rd party apps on bottom. Which sucks when what I use most in Just Type are twitter/FB posts and SMS. In order to get to them quickly, I have to keep only those 3 actions and delete the rest.

  • Notifications Preferences not Sticking

Since updating to OSX 10.10 Yosemite, I am unable to save any changes to the Notifications settings in System Preferences.  After I log out or reboot, everything reverts back to default.  I have tried deleting a number of plist files and repairing permissions, but nothing has solved the problem.  Is anyone else having this issue?
    Thanks,

Here are the instructions I got from AppleCare from an Apple Engineer. I'm not sure if the fix was specifically for my machine or if it'll work for someone else. Follow at your own risk.
    1. Open the Library folder in your Home folder.
    2. In the Library folder, open the Application Support folder.
    3. Locate the folder named NotificationCenter. Drag this folder to the desktop.
    4. Next, open the Terminal application.
Copy and paste each line of these commands into the Terminal window, in order. Press return after each line:
    cd `getconf DARWIN_USER_DIR`
    rm -rf com.apple.notificationcenter
    killall usernoted; killall NotificationCenter
    5. Close the Terminal app.
    6. Restart your computer.
The notification preference changes won't stick until you restart a 2nd time after this.

  • Some characters not showing on screen

I'm using Flash CS5. I have created an Input Text box, but for some reason, the only numerals that apear on the screen when typed are 0, 1, and 2. If one types 3, etc., they just don't appear.
Also, I have a dynamic text box for which when I do the following, it only shows "lease type a number from 1 to 12." with no "P".
    txt_incorrect_number.text = "Please type a number from 1 to 12."
    Any ideas why? thanks

do NOT type any text in your textfields in the authoring environment.

  • InDesign CC User Interface Preferences not sticking

You're not my father, you killed my father! I'll never join you!
Help I don't want to join the DARK side. InDesign won't remember my user interface preferences. I switch to light, close the app, and it goes back to dark (medium dark) next time I open. I am on Windows 7.
Anyone else notice this (mis)behavior or have a solution?
    Ben Dupre

    Bob, thanks.
I didn't install any updates today. Would that happen without consent?
I did notice my recent file menu is also gone though. Is there a config file I can save that can be reapplied after an update?

  • Admin preferences not sticking.

I don't know what's going on, but my admin preference for login items aren't sticking.  I have several apps (FileMaker Pro, Daylite, iTunes) as login items if the server has to restart.  Each time I restart the computer, iTunes has the agreement screen like when you first install it, I keep having problems with Daylite preferences, and Filemaker Pro won't seem to launch the databases (I use an applescript application to launch the FM databases).
I tried removing all of the login items except just one app, restarted, and they all loaded again.
I made sure that the option in the system preferences general tab to close all windows when quitting was checked.
No matter what I do, all of the apps keep launching and keep doing so with issues.
    Any ideas?

I would look in the System (folder) >> Library >> CoreServices >> Menu Extras. Once the Menu Extras (folder) is open there should be several items with a .menu suffix. For a quick test click on the Clock.menu and see if the clock displays in the menu bar. Now if that folder doesn't exhist or nothing is there, please post back.
+(Tip: this is the place to add things like the volume slider, Eject, and other goodies- so don't be bashful. Add by clicking on the prefered .menu. Remove Command drag off menu bar-release-poof )
    Now in [your home] >> Library >> Preferences see if you have;
    com.apple.MenuBarClock.plist
    com.apple.menuextra.textinput.plist
Possibilities of corruption within those seem possible so they may need trashed.

  • Problems with some preferences not showing

I seem to have problem with Mac OS X Leopard system prefences, some settings like "Sound" and "Displays" don´t show anything, only blank page. I installed Leopard first without any language packs and only after that I installed the desired language so I´m guessing this is the root of the problem? I tried reinstalling the language pack but it did not change the situation.
Is there any hacks to make those work? This is minor issue but still annoying. The machine is iMac G5 so PowerPC version of Leopard.

You surely had to have one language pack present in order to install.  What is the desired language you added later?

  • IPod preferences not sticking

    Hi...
I've had a new problem crop up with my iTunes and iPod syncing....
In my iPod prefs I set music to be managed manually, ipods to update automatically and contacts and calendars to update automatically....
I use this on both my office Mac and my personal laptop to keep them synced.
This system has worked beautifully for me for quite a while now... so much so, that I hadn't noticed that it had stopped working!
Somehow, the preferences for the iPod seems to reset... on both computers. (everytime)
This leads me to believe that these settings are stored on my iPod... and quite possibly this pref file has gotten corrupted.
    I'm using iTunes 6.1 & iPod with click & v. 3.1 software
Any suggestions to solving this problem of ipod prefs reseting would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi-
Does anyone know anything about this?
I've tried just about everything, I've even restored my ipod.... no worky.
I know for a fact that this used to work. I'm beginning to think that this funtionality has been stripped... hmmmm maybe it was competing with .mac?
Anyways, it is unfortunate because I had just canceled my .mac membership and now I have no way of truly keeping my computers in sync without paying the uneasily steep $99 yearly fee.
Does Apple actually answer these discussions?
