Some production notes on making a DVD-9

I've had more problems than usual in making one of my usual DVD-9 projects and thought I'd document them (and my solutions/workarounds) in case they come in handy for someone else.
* I usually do a DVD-9 of four videos, each of which are approximately 58 min 30 sec long (plus or minus 10 seconds). Each video has about 40 chapter stops. The DVDs also usually contain many many many menus, including a few motion menus.
* This time we're trying to do a quickie DVD-9. The four videos have significantly different runtimes (more on that below), there are only 6-8 chapter stops per video, and I only have 6 menus (none of which are motion menus).
* I captured all videos as uncompressed SD via an Aurora Pipe Pro and compressed with Compressor 2 (due to a variety of reasons), average bitrate of 4.4Mbps, max of 7.5, 2 pass VBR best, with best motion estimation. Of course encoding audio to AC3.
* First problem: tried to build/format a test to a double-layer DVD+R, and I got the dreaded "couldn't find a valid break point" message.
Note that NORMALLY I never see this message, as I have a lot of menus (including motion) and four videos of almost the same size. Therefore, Layer 0 gets the menus + 2 videos, Layer 1 gets the other two videos, Layer 0 > Layer 1, DVDSP does not have to place a break point within a video, everyone's happy.
This time, with the videos being different sizes and not a lot of menu space, I had to shuffle their order around in order to get Layer 0 > Layer 1 and not require a break point in video. (Since I'm in DVDSP4, I did it in the VTS view of the Outline palette)
* Once I burned the DL DVD+R, I tried to play it on an older Samsung player. It refused to play the first video on Layer 1, and hung at a couple of high-bitrate areas. A newer Panasonic player worked just fine. Moral: DL compatibility is spotty: don't be surprised if things don't work.
* I then noticed that one of the few high-motion sections of some of my videos (camera motion on top of crossfades) were encoding horribly. Lots of picture breakup (macroblocking). I re-encoded out of FCP4 after placing compression markers liberally at the beginning of the fades. No difference.
The fix (which I think I recall hearing about here) was to change Motion Estimation from Best to Better. I encoded just the 3 minutes of the video that contains this section, and it encoded without macroblocking. The test will be if re-encoding the entire hour of video with Better motion estimation still allows that section to appear properly. If not, I'll encode each hour into three parts: stuff before the high motion, high motion (with whatever settings work), stuff after the high motion. Then I'll append them in DVDSP or MPEG Append.
Anyhow, hope that helps.

Did you get a chance to try the encoding in BitVice (or anything else) to test whether it is a Compressor issue or a precision issue?
Yes, that fell under my "due to a variety of reasons" category. Turns out that, since I upgraded to the latest FCP Studio, I can no longer export movies that use the Aurora 10-bit Uncompressed codec that the Pipe uses to capture. The second I try FCP crashes. So I can't export it to use it with BitVice. Actually, I could use Compressor to transcode to Apple's 10-bit uncompressed, then use that in BitVice, so maybe I'll try that.

    Hello
Can some one please help me on this issue?
We are using Crm 4.0 with back end as people soft.
Sometimes we require some products not to be available for internet sales in the web shop.
We generally make those products not available for online sales by assigning it to category u201CObsoleteu201D which Blocks it for online sales
But for the old orders in Open status containing these products, it should allow us to make any changes when order change files i.e. shipment and delivery comes.
It throws an error that u201CProduct is not available for onlineu201D.
I have tried the option locked given in the Product master,
This option makes product not available for new orders but throws an error when order change files comes from People soft.
Can you help / suggest if there any configuration settings which can
    -         Make those products not available for one line sales
    As well as
    -          Should allow processing of old orders in the open status

that feature must be in the delivery-blocker. I have no system at the moment, but it is there. ( parallel to the credit-check-status )

what to buy? I want to a small amount of product photo editing, build websites, and do some product label graphics.  74 years old and do not want to do the Cloud thing online.

Well, the web site building we can get out of the way rather easily:  You cannot build websites with any Photoshop related applications.  Adobe has other applications for that.
You can still buy the full version of Photoshop CS6 with a perpetual license—no monthly payments and you own it. $700 for the standard version, $1,000 for the extended version.
The Photographer's deal gives you a subscription to both Photoshop and Lightroom for $10 per month, but you never get to own the software.  The moment you stop paying, the software ceases to work.
The Cloud thing is not really on-line.  It resides on your computer.  It only has to call the mother ship once a month or so.
Then there's the bargain-basement priced, emasculated Photoshop Elements, with some hand-holding features.
I'm a septuagenarian too, but then I've been using computers for decades, Photoshop seriously for over twelve years.  Photoshop is a professional level application that makes no apologies for its very long and steep learning curve.
Depending on exactly how much editing you need to do to those products shots, you may be satisfied with Ps Elements mentioned above.
There are trial versions for all of the above.

I'm making a DVD for our class reunion.  A fellow classmate has some video on a mini cassette that he said he could put on a dvd.  Will I be able to import from that dvd to imovie to use in my dvd?  Or does it have to be in another format, maybe flash drive?

Ask your friend to supply you the DVD as a data DVD using either DV or AIC as the video format, burning the DVD as a DVD for a DVD player will degrade the video quality.

  • Disc Burner. Why are some files not readable or writeable?

    Hello,
I am trying to backup my friends computer files on a beige G3 (233 MHz). I am burning about 6 DVDs of AIF music files. Most of the files are about 30 - 40 Megs in size. Often I receive error messages on particular files that read:
"The operation cannot be completed because some data cannot be read or written.
    (Error code - 36)"
Followed by the choices: "Stop" or "Continue".
I have a bad feeling that my startup disk is too small but I am not sure.
Most of the files work fine. However some of the files cause disc burner to not be able to use them in the disc image before I burn. Why would this be?
    Here are the specifications:
Computer: beige G3 with two hard drives (one SCSI and one ATA hard drive) and a Pioneer DVR-110D DVD writer which is Apple supported (Apple system profiler indicates Apple supported on this DVD writer). My blank DVD disks are Sony Vermatim DVD-R (1 - 16x speed support). Although I think my beige G3 only writes them at about 2 or 4x.
I am using OS 10.1.5. My startup disk which has OS 10.1.5 in it is a 4 GIG SCSI disk. Is this big enough for a startup disk (for creating 4.5 GIG DVDs)? My files are on the second hard drive which is a 40 GIG ATA disk.
I have a bad feeling that my OSX startup drive is too small for disk burning - it is only 4 GIGs in total and OSX Disc burner (Disc copy) is first making a disk image on my startup volume before it burns it. Perhaps that disk image is too large for the startup volume. Is there any way I could ask OSX to put this disk image on the second larger hard drive instead (not the startup drive?).
Here is my process (I hope I am doing this right - I am new at this):
    1. I first insert a blank DVD-R
    2. A message pops up asking my if I would like to create a blank disc image for this disk (I think this is the typical Disk Copy utility window. I say "yes" and give it a name and choose the "DVD-R or DVD-RAM" option. (I am not sure if there are other important settings to choose here or better settings to use but I guessed the other options that seemed obvious. A blank disk image is created with an icon that looks like a DVD disk.
    3. Then I drag my chosen files to this blank disc image. It takes about 30 minutes to copy over. Thats when I receive the error message that some files couldn't be "read or written". The other files work fine but it would be nice if they all worked.
Why would some files not be readable or writeable?
    4. Then I choose file/burn in the top menu and the DVD is created. This takes another 20 - 30 minutes. At the very end of the process another message pops up saying:
"Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured (error code -28)" Followed by an "OK" button.
However all the files that made it onto the final DVD are fine - its just that its not all of the ones I originally chose in the first step when dragging to create the disk image.
Am I doing this the right way?
Why are some files not "readable or writeable" as it indicates in the error message?
Is my 4 GIG startup disk too small for this? or are the music files possibly corrupt? or could there be some other possible problem?
    Thanks

To follow up, I have some good news. After following your advice Kappy, it now works very well Thanks! Instead of using the 4 GIG volume for the OS, I am now using an 8 GIG partition on an 80 GIG drive. So now the OS has some room to operate. No disk errors occured on my first DVD
Now there was one problem. The second DVD burned gave me an error. I am not sure why but I am going to guess that because I had to installed the OS onto an 8 GIG partition maybe the OS needs to be rebooted in between disk burns because although 8 GIGs is certainly greater than the 4 GIGs I gave it last time, it still isn't a lot of space - maybe just enough to do one DVD at a time. Thats only a guess. So I rebooted to see if that clears the system out ready for the next DVD and I am trying to burn the second DVD again. If I remember I will report back. In any case, yes, this seems to be working. I hope this second DVD burns well too.
    Thanks Kappy

  • Suggestions on making a DVD from AVCHD?

What would be the best way to get the best quality DVD from original Sony 1900x1080i AVCHD - M2ts files?
    Is it better to:-
Convert (or import) the initial files to AVI with another program and make the project with the AVI files in PE9 and share to DVD using PE9 (what other program?)
    or
Edit the original AVCHD files PE9  then
Share to DVD from the edited AVCHD using only PE9
             or
Share to a HD format file and use another program to reduce and burn the DVD (what other format and program)
             or
Share to some other format file and burn the DVD with another program (what other format and program?)
             or
Share to SD and use another program to burn the DVD (what other program?)
    or some other better alternative?
I would be interested in hearing others experiences or nasties they might have encountered doing this.
I supppose it gets down to what does the best job of downsizing the original HD.
Some (but not all) of the copies of the DVD may be played on good quality Blue Ray players that upscale to full HD so I want the best possible DVD.
Also it's my grandaughters wedding so I HAVE to make it good! It is likely to be played many years in the future on probably super players on wall sized screens when unfortunately I won't be around to see them!.
In case you think I'm mad, I will also be making Blue Ray copies as well so I will have to use a second option anyway but I would be prepared to make the project again in low def if this would be better.

I am not worried about speed or ease of editing or work flow but rather ending up with the  highest picture quality DVD with minimum artifacts and compression.
Are you sayng I will get better video quality using PE9 to pre-convert the HD to SD before editing, then burning the DVD from that as opposed to making the edit in original AVCHD and converting the final edited HD to SD and then burning the DVD?
I also wondered if another program that specialised in converting would be better to use rather than using PE9 which is primarily an editing program.
As an example PE9 does a bad job of resizing any AVCHD. Just a slight increase in size noticably degrades the resolution.

I am making multiple DVD's of roughly 50 hours of footage on DVD Studio pro with 4 separate menus for 4 different 'parts' or series if you will. 50 hours - 20 episodes - 4 parts of 5 episodes each. What are my options in terms of burning these parts on to separate DVD's, what is the process, what size DVD RW should I buy, what bitrate should I use, and what quality I should expect for the burn. Any advice or insight is welcome.

    >>What are my options in terms of burning these parts on to separate DVD's<<
20 episodes totaling 50 hours equals about 2.5 hours per episode assuming all episodes have the same duration.  Fitting 2.5 hours onto one single layer DVD would require a low bit rate which means quality wouldn't be anywhere near best, but that's a judgement call you'll have to make based on several factors.  For example; if there is not much motion in the video (talking heads, etc), you can get by with a lower bit rate and may not notice any quality difference.
    >>what is the process>>
The process is essentially the same as it is when authoring a regular DVD with 2 hours or less of content.  However, with as many discs as you'd need to complete this "set," you'll need to create a separate DVD Studio Project for each disc.  Basically, you'd use one of Compressor's DVD Presets (or customize a preset) to create an MPEG--2 video file (.m2v) and a Dolby Digital audio file (.AC3).  Import both of those assets into your DVD Studio Pro project for authoring and burning.
If you want to keep one episode per disc, DVD Studio Pro does have a 150 minute preset or you could use dual-layer discs with a higher bit rate for better quality.  Again; your call.
    >>what size DVD RW should I buy<<
Size?  12cm.  Capacity?  Single layer, single sided DVD discs (DVD-5) have a rated capacity of 4.7Gb (4.37Gb actual), including menus.  If you use single layer discs and want to keep the quality reasonably good, you'd need at least 50 discs to complete this "set" with each disc holding roughly 2 hours of footage if you keep the menu on each disc simple.  Or, you could use dual-layer discs (DVD-9) which have a capacity of about 7.95Gb - almost doubling the recordable capacity.  There are also dual-sided, dual-layer discs available (DVD-18) but they are relatively expensive and have to be manually turned over to continue playback ... but they do have roughly 15.9Gb capacity.
    >>what bitrate should I use, and what quality I should expect for the burn<<
Exactly; the quality is dependent on the bit rate chosen, as well as the quality of the compression.  Using compression markers where needed can greatly increase the quality of playback but will most likely increase the file size of the compressed video.  For the best quality, keeping the bit rate  as high as possible allowed under the DVD specification will yield the best quality but some DVD players may choke if the bit rate is too high.  For best quality I typically aim for a bit rate around 7.6 to 8.0Mbps but that will only allow about one hour of footage.
Naturally, if you decrease the bit rate, you can fit more footage onto the disc but quality will be sacraficed.   Here's a chart approximating DVD bit rates and durations for single layer discs (does not include space for menus):
    3.5Mbps - 120 minutes
    5.0Mbps -   95 minutes
    6.0Mbps -   82 minutes
    7.6Mbps -   65 minutes
    8.0Mbps -   60 minutes

  • Making a DVD from iPhone Video

Lifelong Windows user here seeking some Mac expertise:)
I am in the process of making a DVD from Iphone home videos that can be played on any DVD player.
I see that Mac's video format is .mov which from what I can tell is not the same format needed to make DVD's that can be played on all DVD players. I already have the files saved on my MacBook Pro as mov. files can anyone tell me how to get them converted in order to have them play on a DVD player? Can iMovie do the conversion for you or do I need another program to convert the files and then process them into a movie in the iMovie program or even Adobe Premiere Elements 12 which I also have installed on this MacBook Pro.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That is great information to have. Thank You for your quick response. Following your response I did some more research on video converters and found that Handbrake which I already have installed on the MacBook converts video files but only in the output formats of MP4 and MKV which does not help my cause; however, while doing that research I came across a program known as iMedia Converter Deluxe for Mac from Skysoft which from what I can tell supports output .avi video formats. Do you have any experience / advice on iMedia or any other recommended video converter program that works well with Mac and is preferably "free"?

  • Some videos not showing up on AppleTV from iMac's iTunes library

Having a strange problem. Not sure if it is an iTunes problem or an AppleTV problem but I will try here first.
I have several videos in my library, some of which are digitized home videos I edited/rendered, others are AppleTV converted DVD's I own. For some reason, many of them are not showing up on my AppleTV when I go into "Computers" off the main menu and select my iMac with the iTunes library of them. Some show up, but more and more do not. They are all properly formatted and done so using Compressor settings for AppleTV. No idea why some are not showing up.
If you look on the iMac with the library on it, they all show up fine. And if I try and play the video on my iMac but tell it to use AirPlay to play the video on the AppleTV, it plays just fine on the TV/AppleTV. I do have Home Sharing turned on for ALL my media and I also use iTunes Match service.
When I try and use my iPad to access videos under the "shared" option and select my iMac's iTunes library, I get the same incomplete list. So I am thinking it's the iTunes library that's sending out an incomplete list for some reason. No idea why.
I have tried drag-and-dropping the videos into the iTunes library as well as using the "Add to library" menu command, neither makes a difference.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Also - i had a similar issue - lots of movies in itunes - not showing up as selectable on apple tv - i found that you have to go to "list" in itunes and select any movies i wanted to be selectable when i switched to the apple tv device - can someone please create a word for - "my software changes and somehow i'm an idiot for not knowing what magic the programmers are throwing down" - this too will change in the future - just need the happy customer service types to maintain a voice with the programmers and bottom line guys and gals.

  • Making Playable DVD From Disc Image

A friend of mine has an iDVD project but his mac cannot burn dvds. So he gave me the file as a disc image. I dragged and dropped the disc image to the dvd and hit burn. It does not play as a dvd in a player or in frontrow on my mac. When I double click on it the disc image is on the dvd. Did I make a data dvd instead? How do I make a playable dvd from a disc image?
Also, is going the disc image route the easiest way to transfer an iMovie or iDVD project to another mac. I did it this way because my mac does not have some of the music or photos on it that are linked to the project file. In Garage Band you can save as archive when transferring a file to another mac and it saves all the loops, etc in the file. There must be something similar in iDVD.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Paul

So he gave me the file as a disc image. I dragged and dropped the disc image to the dvd and hit burn.
    Paul,
Video DVDs are written in the UDF format. That's why you must use Apple's Disk Utility to burn a disk image to writable media correctly.
In burning from the Finder, you have created a data DVD in Mac OS Extended format that will NOT play in set-top DVD players (as you have found out).
