Some queries about MAC OS X LION

I want to know that after installing Lion, will my MS Office 2011 work? I also have a bootcamp partition which has windows 7 in it, So will that get affected after installing Lion?
How will i get back Lion if i need to format my iMac anytime as i will not have a DVD of it, so what is the procedure of that?
Wil i have all the data in my HDD or do i need to back up my files for installing MAC OS X Lion?
Thank You...

Extract the InstallESD file from the package*:

No upgrade can guarantee no data loss.  You must backup your data if you value it.

  • Some features of Mac OS X Lion are not supported for the disk

At the beginning of the installation on my MacBook Pro (early 2008, non-unibody) this alert appeared. The disk is partitioned into three partitions: 1. = Photoshop-scratch, 2. = System, 3. = Bootcamp. It seems that this causes the system-message. What could be the reason for that: The Photoshop-partition or Bootcamp? Is it possible to erase just the PS-partition and then install Lion or do I have to reformat the disk?

  • Some basic queries about mac os

i m wondering to buy a mac n surely i will buy it soon but i had some ques
    1) macs slows down with data as windows does ??
    2) crashes or viruses are frequent ??
    3) any technical issues with os ??
    4) the advantage of windows over mac os ??

Note that you're getting a fairly dumbed-down view of the whole virus issue so far.  People like to play word games with this topic.  It's important to understand that malware does exist for the Mac, so that you don't let a false sense of security behave in dangerous ways.  Of course, there's been several orders of magnitude less malware released for the Mac in the last 10 years than appears for Windows every day, on average, so you'll probably never see any malware...  but it's still possible.  For the full story on Mac malware, see my Mac Malware Guide.  (Note that my pages contain links to other pages that promote my services, and this should not be taken as an endorsement of my services by Apple.)
Also, regarding whether the stock 13" MBP has enough memory for you, it is impossible to answer accurately without knowing what you plan on doing with your computer.  If you're a graphic designer, for example, who needs a lot of memory and power, 4 GB may not be enough, and for that matter, a 13" MBP might not be right for you.  What do you plan on doing with it?

  • Some very basic queries about mac os

    what is the diff between
    alias n duplicate
    get info n show inspector

    1. Alias creates a shortcut to an item. Duplicate creates an exact copy.
    2. The Get Info window opens for what's selected at the time the command was issued. Show Inspector changes with the selection.

  • Some queries about my new ipod! PLEASE HELP!

    hey guys,
before you say, i have searched the forums far and wide, and am not satisfied with what i've found, so that's why i am posting these questions! lol.
anyway, here they are; please help if you're in the know!
    (1) I notice that i can feel the disk in the iPod spinning almost the whole time while watching videos. it is not a very loud noise, but it is enough to hear it slightly, and to feel vibrations. is this normal?
    (2) I notice that after watching short videos, the battery life plummets, only to regain when listening to music. i take it this is just an inaccuracy with the meter, and is normal?
    (3) just out of interest, how long can you run your ipod (a) playing songs, and (b) playing videos? i have a 30GB and i would be interested in comparing to others.
also, is the BTI external battery II a good option for when i need to watch vids for longer? are there any negative side-effects to the iPod because of it?
    thanks alot,
    oli.

    Let's see:
    1. What you're hearing/feeling is the hard disk spinning. It's normal. Moving video takes a lot more than moving music, so to stream it out means the disk has to keep spinning. A song file can be moved to the iPod's memory buffer and played from there, using a lot less disk action.
    2. The battery estimate is switching to reflect the current task. When you watch videos, it estimates how much time you have left to watch them, and when you go to music, it adjusts the estimate back.
    3. I haven't had the iPod video long enough to get an idea of how long the battery lasts for music and video, but it hasn't let me down yet. I hook it up to my Mac each night and run it through the day, and it hasn't ran all the way down during normal use. I haven't run too many videos through it yet, but short films didn't drain it.
I have a Belkin external battery pack that should work well during a 8-hour trip later this month. Estimates like 6 hours of video use, but it takes AA batteries, so an extra set of batteries is all I need. Doesn't harm or affect the iPod, but it bypasses the internal battery system, so you can't charge the iPod from it.
The BTI rechargeable battery should give you more play time, and may charge the iPod as well, but you can't stick batteries from anywhere in it.
    Hope that helps,
    Richard

  • PC user wanting to swap to Mac has some queries.

    Hi,
As the title suggests I have a few queries about swapping from PC to Mac. Firstly I've been informed that you can't directly compare speeds, processors, RAM etc of a PC with a Mac as MAcs run quicker, but is there a way of knowing what an equivalent mac is compared with a specific spec PC. I understand PC specs but not sure how they translate to Mac. For example, my current Laptop has Intel Core 2 Duo 2.13GHz processor with 4GB RAM (I'm wanting to improve on this spec), what would the equivalent Mac be?
I use my laptop for Full HD video editing and use Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9, and have found out this is not compatible with Mac. The only equivalent software I've seen for Mac is Final Cut Pro X, but I'm not prepared to pay £199 for this, especially considering the fact you can get Sony Vegas..... Platinum 11 for £30. Therefore I would need to partition my Macbook and run windows 7 (unless someone can recommend a good video editor for Mac which is much cheaper). Is it free to install windows 7 on a Mac or do you have to buy software? If so how much is it? Would it still recognise AVCHD?
One issue I have with Sony vegas on my current laptop is that it takes ages to render HD video, it can take hours (literally) to render 10mins of video. I don't know if this is down to the OS, RAM, processor or Hard drive, or something else. When editing I only have this one program open as using any other program (even the internet) is painfully slow. Would having a quad core i7 processor and 8GB RAM speed up the rendering process? Do Macs speed this process up, or if you are running it in windows mode would it be exactly the same as running it on a PC?
When ripping music to the Mac can you only rip in AAC/ALAC or can you rip it as MP3 so it's more 'universal'? I have music systems that can't read AAC :-/
Finally, when having a quick 'play' with a MacBook in store (PC world) I noticed that when I opened new Windows/apps the window did not fill the entire screen, and when you opened up further windows/apps you could see them stacked over each other a bit randomly. Can you change the setting so that the windows fill the entire screen, and can you set it so that this happens as default?
Sorry for all the questions, but I want to make sure a Mac's right for me before forking out thousands of pounds.

    LukeD wrote:
Yes, the OP should buy whatever they want, Mac or PC.
However, the OP has come here to ask Mac questions.
A Dell Latitude is not a notebook for video editing, and it is not supported as such by any of the major software developers.
You would need a Dell Precision for editing.
A Mac will run Windows far better and faster than any Dell for the simple reason that Windows on a Mac is a clean, no crapware installation. Any Dell comes with several pounds of bloatware.
If you want a Kia, buy a Dell. If you want a Mercedes-Benz, buy a Mac.
This is not a fanboy opinion, but an easily verifiable fact by reading computer reviews and sales figures.
    Good luck!
Physically, a MacBook Pro will last longer because it is made of durable anodized aluminum versus cheap cracking plastic on PCs.
PC companies make almost no money on notebooks. It is clear that they cut corners.
Add AppleCare, and there is just no credible comparison.
I digress from the OP's questions, but the nonsense of some needed to be addressed.
Ok lets addrees some of this.
But First Thank you fane_J. A voice of reason.
A Dell Latitude can have as good video card as a Dell Precisions. And if I wanted I could change the video card I ordered with my Latitude to any that is available for that model at time of production.
A Mac comes with either Video card A or B and can NEVER be changed. Even if it goes bad the only way to change it is to Replace the complete motherboard which includes both the CPU and GPU. They are Soldered onto the Motherbaord. Nor can you ever upgrade the CPU because it is Soldered onto the board. You can on a Dell notebook.
Have you ever heard that you can format any hard drive on any computer and install the OS clean without the makers included FREE (read that KWrap) software? Well you can. And I am sorry but Mac's also come with K_Wrap ware. Photobooth? iChat? and especially iTunes. And some of the Mac software you can't uininstall.
The reason a Mac will run Windows is because they Use the Same Hardware. Better then a dedicated Windows PC? No I am afraid not for one simple reason. You can not wipe the drive of a Mac and install Only Windows. You first have to install OS X then partition the drive and install Windows. You HAVE TO USE Apple supplied software to access some of the hardware included in a Mac. Also you can only have that One partition for Windows. Try to make a second partition and you break both Windows and OS X.
My Dell Latitude is ALL Metal. Not one plastic piece to the case. If you ever looked inside a MBP you would see many plastic pieces.
No PC makers make money on notebooks, just where did you get that. Notebooks are not Printers where the manufacturer makes money on the Ink they sell.
My Dell came with a 3 year warranty, mail in, included with the original cost. And I could of gotten Accidental Damage Next Business Day On Site service for somewhere around and extra $200. Dell Complete Care Warranty.
That is far less then I paid for the Applecare warranty for my MBP and I can't get Accidental Damage or On Site Service for a Mac.
No credible comparison, Again just where do you get that. With the Dell I don't have to Make an Appointment to have it looked at and then be told it isn't covered.
An YES some this nonsense had to be Addressed.
Which is not digressing from the OPs question.
    Thank you.

  • Mac OS X Lion shows excessive disk storage usage for movies ... about 3 times the expected size.

I  have about 65GB of movies on my Mac OS X Lion. However, when I look up my storage usage from "About this Mac -> More Info -> Storage, it shows 208 GB. I tried querying up all Movie files, and it comes back with only 65-70GB. Any ideas where the extra storage is being reported from?
    Thanks

Then you actually do have 208 GB of movies.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight as described here. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can also use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste (command-V) into the Terminal window. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

So, I have jus bought it .
I heard that mac is exposed to virus, then i found virus on flash "trojan" .
This sounds is commom? What do I have to do when my computer doesn't work as predictable ?
Do I need to reboot it?
    Please help me.

If you elect to install Adobe Flash Player, download it from this site: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
If your Mac is not working as expected, please describe the symptoms and include as much detail as possible. The very last thing you should suspect on a Mac is a virus. Installing "anti-virus" junk in an effort to fix your Mac is almost guaranteed to make things worse.
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it updated with software updates from Apple.
What do I have to do when my computer doesn't work as predictable ?
Since your Mac is new, you should be contacting AppleCare to discuss any concerns rather than seeking help from strangers on this user-to-user support forum.
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgement, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • Why I couldn't buy mac OS Mountain Lion on my credit card. It says some verification !?

Why I couldn't buy mac OS mountain Lion on apps store?

Just look at the card you are using. It will ask you to verify your method of payment and all of that but that again is just to verify its you downloading the OSX from the APP Store. I looked at my account and Apple will send you a reciept for the payment of the OSX from the APP Store ($32.08 with tax). They have only charged me once.
Note: You have to wait for it to download completely, before you go to install it on another computer. This allows the purchase to register on the Apple Database. You will then be able to download on the other computer from the APP Store. It will prompt you for billing information which is just a verification method and then it will download to the computer. From my experience it did not charge me twice. My bank posts transactions rather quickly, so I was able to verify this when I did it on my second computer.

  • SQLDeveloper 3.1 on Mac OS X Lion

    Hi guys,
sorry for reposting, but this is really pressing -- doesn't anyone use SQLDeveloper on Mac OS X Lion?
I have a pretty recent Mac OS X System (10.7.3, today updated from 10.7.2 -- the problem existed there as well) with Java 1.6.0_29:
    localhost:~ bgd$ /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home/bin/java -version
    java version "1.6.0_29"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_29-b11-402-11D50b)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.4-b02-402, mixed mode)
I installed SQLDeveloper 3.1.0.7.42 on this system and I've encountered the following two problems:
    1. the connections aren't saved. Everytime I delete the ".sqldeveloper" directory in my homedir, SQLDeveloper starts without any problems. I can add a connection, test it, connect to the database and even saving it doesn't show any errors. A "connections.xml" file is generated but empty:
    localhost:~ bgd$ find .sqldeveloper/ -name connections.xml -ls
    1733256 0 -rw-r--r-- 1 bgd bgd 0 Feb 9 17:43 .sqldeveloper//system3.1.07.42/o.jdeveloper.db.connection.11.1.1.4.37.59.48/connections.xml
If I start the SQLDeveloper w/o deleting the "~/.sqldeveloper" directory I always get the following errors:
oracle.jdeveloper.db.DatabaseConnections DatabaseConnections has no JNDI context so cannot list connections.
oracle.jdevimpl.db.adapter.DefaultContextWrapper Failed to create naming Context for db connections at url: file:/Users/bgd/.sqldeveloper/system3.1.07.42/o.jdeveloper.db.connection.11.1.1.4.37.59.48/connections.xml
oracle.jdevimpl.db.adapter.DefaultContextWrapper Failed to create naming Context for db connections at url: file:/Users/bgd/.sqldeveloper/system3.1.07.42/o.jdeveloper.db.connection.11.1.1.4.37.59.48/connections.xml
The connections.xml file remains empty, no matter how may connections I add and "save".
    2. After I make a connection to a database, I try the "SQL Worksheet" option (either by right-clicking the DB Connection or thru the menu "Tools->SQL Worksheet"). But nothing happens (except for the dialog "Select connection" when calling thru the "Tools" menu) -- no new window, no "SQL Workshop" space on the right canvas, nothing.
I've googled the first problem (the second one is pretty hard to "formulate") and, based on the results, I also tried the following:
    - Set the right Java Home in sqldeveloper.conf and sqldeveloper-Darwin.com:
    SetJavaHome /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home
    - tried to add the following lines to sqldeveloper.conf and sqldeveloper-Darwin.conf:
    AddJavaLibFile ../../lib/java/api/jaxb-api.jar
    AddJavaLibFile ../../lib/java/api/jsr173_api.jar
    AddJavaLibFile ../../j2ee/home/lib/activation.jar
    AddJavaLibFile ../../lib/java/shared/sun.jaxb/2.0/jaxb-xjc.jar
    AddJavaLibFile ../../lib/java/shared/sun.jaxb/2.0/jaxb-impl.jar
    AddJavaLibFile ../../lib/java/shared/sun.jaxb/2.0/jaxb1-impl.jar
    - I checked, but there is no ORACLE_HOME variable set on my system
    - Right now the java process looks like:
    bgd 1411 0.0 3.9 3831552 326400 ?? S 6:11PM 0:23.03 /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home/bin/java -Xmx640M -Xms128M -Xverify:none -Doracle.ide.util.AddinPolicyUtils.OVERRIDE_FLAG=true -Dsun.java2d.ddoffscreen=false -Dwindows.shell.font.languages= -XX:MaxPermSize=256M -Doracle.jdbc.mapDateToTimestamp=false -Dide.AssertTracingDisabled=true -Doracle.ide.util.AddinPolicyUtils.OVERRIDE_FLAG=true -Djava.util.logging.config.file=logging.conf -Dsqldev.debug=false -Dcom.apple.mrj.application.apple.menu.about.name=SQL_Developer -Dcom.apple.mrj.application.growbox.intrudes=false -Dcom.apple.macos.smallTabs=true -Dapple.laf.useScreenMenuBar=true -Xbootclasspath/p:../../rdbms/jlib/ojdi.jar -Dide.conf="/Users/bgd/Downloads/SQLDeveloper.app/Contents/Resources/sqldeveloper/sqldeveloper/bin/sqldeveloper.conf" -Dide.startingcwd="/Users/bgd/Downloads/SQLDeveloper.app/Contents/Resources/sqldeveloper/sqldeveloper/bin" -classpath ../../ide/lib/ide-boot.jar oracle.ide.boot.Launcher

It is a new Mac OS X Lion installation, but I've restored my home directory from a previous Mac OS X installation -- it is possible that some "old" files from the old installation (where I've also used SQL Developer, but deleted it) are interfering with the new one.

  • I Need To Know Some Information About Installing Windows On A Macbook Pro 13

    Hello !
Actually Playing My Favourite Games Is A Problem Because I Can't Find DVD Games (Mac Version) For My Macbook Pro So I Found Out That You Can Install Windows 7 Software On A Mac But I Wanted To Know Some Information Like :
    - I Know That I Can Install It Using Boot Camp But I'll Need A Windows 7 DVD So Is There Some Specialized Version For Mac ? Or I Just Need A Normal Windows 7 DVD For PC ?
    - If I Installed Windows 7, Will I Lose The Mac OS X Lion ? Or I Can Have Both Softwares Together At The Same Time ?
    - If I Installed Windows 7, Will It Have The Same Specifications Of Macbook Pro 13 ? (Ex: 2.4 GHz Processor)
    - If I Installed Windows 7 And I Already Had Mac OS X Lion, Will The Macbook Lag Or It Will Work Properly ?
    - If There's Any More Info That You Know About Installing Windows 7 On A Macbook Pro 13, Please Provide Me With It, Thanks!

This really is a forum about the MacBook Pro hardware.  The best place to ask your questions would be the Windows/BootCamp forum.  Your MacBook Pro 13 has one weakness that's going to make gaming a bad experience.  It has an integrated Intel HD graphics processor, whereas the higher end MacBook Pro's have discrete ATI graphics processors.  But the forum will help you out.
