Some questions concerning switching

Hello Mac people!
I'm planning on buying a Mac Pro for xmas when the new oct core model is comming out. Thus I have some (read: 5) questions about the switching process:
1) How is the varanty on a Mac Pro? What can I do? Can I exchange RAM/GPU/CPU/HDD etc without braking the varanty?
What does Apple Care give me? Is it worth it?
2) One cool function on Mac is Front Row/alternative program. But, Mac Pro doesnt have any built in ir reciever? Would it be possible to use my iPod doc's ir along with some fancy program and buy the apple remote?
3) How well does remote controlling a win server work using a Mac and OSX? What functions are limited?
4) My receiver (Yamaha RX-V495RDS) is atm connected with a spdif wire to my pc. I understand that the Mac Pro doesnt have a connection for SPDIF but only for Digital in/out? How will this work, is there some sort of adapter I could buy to solve the problem?
5) Mby not the best question to ask in an international forum but what possible dictionaries are there for Mac? I mainly use Swe, Swe-Eng-Swe and Eng.
I am atm using wordfinder for pc and it's just great! Is there a possibility that it would work in OSX using crossover, so that I dont have to get new stuff?
These are the questions I have atm, but there might pop up a few more, so bare with me, I'm a Mac noob!
Thank you in advance!

First of all, thank you both for your answers!
Vince DiStefano: I will have a look at the client...I don't have any big needs so it should work nicely...
Btw...did spotlight search in Leopard work on network pc:s?
1) OK, is it worth it, or should I just save the money instead?
Too bad cpu upgrades aren't covered, since it is really user installable...for many users atleast =)
2) Would I have to buy a new ir reciever or how do you think it would work? I will try to have a look at what's on the market...
4) I don't really understand...
http://images.apple.com/macpro/images/techspecsports20060807.jpg
That is the Mac Pros backpanel and it has "Optical digital audio input and output Toslink ports, Analog stereo line-level input and output minijacks".
How will I be able to plug in my reciever to it?
5) That I know of...and it does not cover swedish...
If someone knows if wordfinder works in crossover or if someone could test it I would be really really really happy! =)
Thank you in advance!

  • Some questions concerning BPC v10

    Hi averybody,
    I am working in a project of BPC v10 and there are some questions i would like to solve. Specifically i want to know if the new version of SAP BPC allow you to insert new records in a hierarchy level. I heard somewhere it was possible by defining percentages to split the record on base members.
    On the other hand, in bpc v7.5 whenever you look for a dimension member using a filter in a evcvw , the dimension presented in order to select a member has no hierarchy. Do you know if it has changed inn bpc v10 or it remains equal?
    Does anybody know something concerning this items? Any help will be much appreciated,
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi,

    No change in BCP 10. Once you fileter based on property view automatically changed to "List View"

  • Some questions concerning the digital signature on an interactive form

    I've just finished an interactive Advertising Contract with 128-bit encryption that will enable recipients to submit CC info safely to our publishing firm. Even though form fields at the top allow typing the name of an authorized person, the signature line at the bottom is presenting problems because in order for anyone to sign, they need a digital signature.
    (1) Is this necessary? If so, is there any way of automating it for clients so they don't have to go through the process of creating one?
    (2) How do I create a digital signature for my partner and have the SUBMIT button on the form channel the returns to his email address instead of mine (which it is doing because of another interactive form I created in which I was the point person for returns)? I couldn't find anything in the "properties" of the OK button that allowed me to enter an email address.
    Thank you so much for your help here. This is time-sensitive, as we need to get the package out ASAP.

    1. If you require a digital signature, then setting up a digital ID is necessary in order to sign a digital signature field. So the question is really more fundamental: Do you require that people sign the form with a digital signature? If you say yes, what are the reasons?
    2. If you are using the distribution process in Acrobat so thatt you can collect the form data in a responses file, you should distribute the form using the other person's machine that has Acrobat installed on it.
    If you don't want to do this and only want to collect the returned documents without placing the data in a responses file, you can set up your own submit button using any email address you want and not use the distribution process. You will have to Reader-enable the document and then email or otherwise get it to the users. How you set up the submit button depends on how you want it to work exactly, and which version of Acrobat you're using. More information can be found here: http://acrobatusers.com/tutorials/form-submit-e-mail-demystified
    If you still want to go through the distribution process and want to change the email address that it uses, you can change it in: Edit > References > Identity > Email Address
    You'll then have to redistribute the form using a copy of the form as it existed prior to your first distribution. The responses file will be on your machine.

  • Just bought the MSIGE70-2PE had some questions/concerns

    I just bought the MSI GE70-2PE and i am curious  about a few things it seems to run very hot and i didn't know if this may or may not be a defective model... i mean its hitting when i play WoW  95+ C which i know is extremely hot and i have tried turning off turbo boost and lowering the battery to eco/power save and it still hits that. Also the wifi will randomly drop and i will have to turn it off and reboot to get it back.
    I was wondering if fellow owners have had this issue or know of any fixes to keep it lower temp.
    I understand its a gaming laptop but these temps seem too hot to where it could degrade the components over time also i am using a cooling pad and the laptop is not even a week old.
    Thanks so much

    *thanks for the quick response.
    my router is LINKSYS e900
    and i have contacted MSI(USA) as well to see what they think of the issue.
    I was just wondering if fellow owners may have run into this issue and on the cooling pad i do have one
    Re-pasting cpu/gpu voids your warranty apperently but MSI do have premission in EU for owners of laptop to open it and do RAM upgrade or replace of broken RAM with new ones and so on but when it comes to repasting cpu/gpu would need you to send laptop to msi service so they can do it since that can apperently void the warranty if you do it yourself.

  • Some question - BI BEx Suite

    Hello,
    Just some questions concerning BI BEx Suite:
    1) How is it possible to get grid lines as well as the standard MS Excel header names (A, B, C, ...) within the
    Excel environment of BEx (e.g. work sheets)?
    2) How is it possible to switch off the buttons Filter, Chart and Info within the Excel environment of BEx?
    3) How can queries be refreshed within the Excel environment of BEx using only one button click? In BW 3.5. there was a refresh button. Now the only way I saw, was to switch off the connection to the source system and then to switch it on again.
    4) I miss the hierarchy triangles within web reports if I define a hierarchy within the query designer (i.e. no external hierarchy using hierarchy tables). Do I have to switch them somewhere on?
    Thank you + regards,
    Ingo Peter

    Hi
    1) and 2) refer to the default Workbook, which you should change according to your needs
    See http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/f1/0a551ce09411d2acb90000e829fbfe/frameset.htm
    Topic Select Default Workbook
    (just create your own default Workbook)
    4) Universal Display hierarchies are still a limitation to SPS7 in the new Web Runtime.
    Kind Regards

  • Questions concerning ST Simple Transformations

    I got some questions concerning Simple Transformations:
    1.) When editing a simple transformation, how to insert comments? In pure ABAP, a comment line must have as asterisk in the first column...
    2.) I use <tt:loop>...</tt:loop> and want to use the index of the currently processed entry, like SY-TABIX when implementing a "LOOP AT itab" in ABAP. Is there a way?
    Thanks for your answer, points will be rewared...
    -MIKE

    Hi Jack, please find some sample coding below that will solve your issue:
    <tt:cond check="not-initial(ref('E1EDL20.INCO1'))">
      <INCO1 tt:value-ref="E1EDL20.INCO1"/>
    </tt:cond>
    With the simple transformation tt cond statment you can make an XML tag optional. In below example during deserialisation xml tag <INCO1> will be skipped when not availabke in the xml and SAP data E1EDL20.INCO1 will not be filled by the transformation.
    Regards. Please give points when usefull !

  • Migrating from Aperture to LR - some questions

    Hey all,
    I'm a current user of Aperture and I'm considering going to LightRoom but I have some questions/concerns.  I downloaded the demo and I'm playing with that but given my lack of knowledge, I wanted to ask some questions to get a feel for the product.
    I'm not sure if my current aperture library is considered large or not but I have about 75gig of images to which I have them organized by project.  Since the birth of my girls I've been focusing a lot on them - go figure   Anyways the setup I have for them is a good example in how I typically setup up my images within Aperture. I'm not sure how easy (or not so easy this can be done with LR)
    As you can see I have a folder called twins, then the year and finally the month.  The purple icons are smart albums, basically images that pass muster and I upload to smugmug.
    I basically would like to have something along those lines in LR - have my images organized by event, date (if need be) and then a smart album of images that I'll be publishing.
    I'm still getting used to the interface, there are things I definitely like and some things I need to work on a little more.  Any advice on moving from aperture to LR would be helpful though I do want to qualify that I'm still checking it out and have not made a decision to jump ship quite yet.
    Finally are there any deals or such to lower the price of LR?

    "while LR shows you your folders, offers the temptation of trying to categorise by them (resist it!), and allows you to organise and categorise by collections. You you aren't forced to use virtual folders, but can and should."
    So you're saying don't organize the images in the physical folders - that's going to be a hard habit to break.  In playing with LR last night, I created a separate catalog called twins09 and I exported my masters (with the sidecar) out of aperture by folder, i.e., January09 goes into a separate folder, as does June09 etc.  I then created my smart collections of keepers by using the 5 stars and date constraints that LR provides, i.e, greater the 20090430 and less then 20090601 for May09 images.
    What you're recommending is to create a twins 2009 folder and store all images there and then use collections/smart collections to organize the images.  Interesting. Given the habits I've picked up using aperture that will be a difficult adjustment.

  • Some installation questions concerning AS and 8i

    I will be installing 8i Enterprise Edition so that I can work with 9i AS. I have read through most of the Installation Guide for Oracle 8i - Enterprise Edition Release 3 (8.1.7) for Windows NT. I have some questions that didnt seem to be addressed in the documentation.
    How to access Web Site component?
    Appendix A, 'Individual Components Available for Installation,' indicates that the Oracle Enterprise Manager Web Site component is not included in either the Typical or Minimal installations of Oracle 8i Enterprise Edition. Is it available through a custom installation, or how do I access this component?
    Advanced Security questions:
    That same appendix also makes it clear that one of the primary differences between the Typical and Minimal installations is all of the Advanced Security features (encryption and integrity support; authentication support; and so on). It seems that I will need the Advanced Security component, because I will be configuring a database that stores usernames and passwords. However, I will be working with Oracle Portal. Can security features be configured just through Portal and 9i Application Server, or do I need to use Advanced Security instead, or in addition to, Portal and AS?
    From what I understand, Advanced Security works with SSL (Secure Socket Layers). Does this affect visitors' ability to access a Web application anonymously before login (doesnt interaction with an application in SSL require online exchange between computers of authenticated, encrypted digital certificates? I hope this question makes sense; I'm new to the topic.) Is there a short answer to this question?
    Application Server instead of Oracle HTTP server:
    I also saw in Appendix A that the Oracle HTTP server powered by Apache is included with both the Typical and Minimal installations. It's also bundled as a "Web listener" with the Oracle Enterprise Manager Web Site.
    However, I will be installing 9i Application Server instead to work with the 8i database. Will this cause any conflicts? I'm just wondering if the Oracle HTTP server component can be excluded from the beginning, without doing a custom install. I did see on pg. 3-6 of the Installation Guide (under 'Oracle Enterprise Manager Web Browser Requirements') that Oracle Enterprise Web Site does support the Oracle Internet Application Server.
    Also, I understand from the section on 'Mandatory Individual Component Requirements' that Advanced Security "requires preinstallation of an LDAP directory such as Oracle Internet Directory (provided on the component CD-ROM)." It refers me to the Oracle Advanced Security Administrator's Guide for further information.
    Oracle Internet Directory:
    However, I haven't been able to access the Security Administrator documentation yet for installation procedures since I haven't been able to successfully download 8i Enterprise Edition (with all of the supporting documentation) yet.
    I looked at the online 8i documentation at http://technet.oracle.com/docs/products/oracle8i/doc_index.htm but did not see any reference to the Advanced Security Administrators Guide.
    As for Oracle Internet Directory itself, I did just find the Oracle Internet Directory Administrator's Guide on the oracle8i/doc_index.htm page mentioned above - so that should help.
    I also looked at the Oracle Internet Directory download page to see if links to documentation might be provided there, but saw that "Oracle Internet Directory Release 2.1.1.0 is delivered as part of Oracle8i Release 3" which leads me back to the 8i Enterprise Edition page where Ive been experiencing download difficulties. So far as I know, theres no evaluation-version CDs available for this software, though there are evaluation CDs available for 9i AS.

  • Potential new T61 user with some questions about product/support/etc.

    Hi all!
    I've been using Dell Latitude's for last 7+ years and been happy with them thus far, as I was able to stay within the C-series thru 3 systems and reuse some components such as batteries, CD-ROM, etc. but now that I'd have to go to D-series, that gives me the choice of going to new vendor...and IBM/Lenovo was the only other choice due to my OS requirement: XP Pro!
    So now I'm here asking some questions that I'm still having issues with:
    (I'm comparing the T61 to Dell D530 and/or my C610)
    1) Features that I've used on existing Dell that I don't see on T61 :
        a) Infared port --- I've used to transfer stuff from one sys to another
        b) S-Video out --- I've used to display on TV for some situations
        c) Serial port --- can't recall using it but with my luck, I'd need it sometime.
        d) Parallel port (C610) --- for my really old printer used on rare occasions
        e) Floppy drive --- yes, I still use it for some unusual situations
    2) On Dell, I can put a 2nd battery or floppy drive in the media bay instead of CD/DVD...what about T61?
    3) Support:
        a) Dell forums have 7+ yrs of history and are well used...this forum seems brand new...was there another one before it?
        b) My Dell's have lifetime tech support (ok, so sometimes understanding the folks from India can be an issue) but IBM seems to limit this to life of warranty.
    4) Pricing: T61 would be seem to be, at minimum, about $150 more than similar Dell even with current "sales"...I'm having trouble justifying this...
    5) Things that I see that T61 has that new Dell D530 doesn't:
       a)  built-in mike --- my current Dell has it and I use it now and then so this is a plus!
       b) keyboard light --- nice feature, but couldn't I use a USB one instead if I really needed it?
       c) fingerprint reader --- never used one...how often do people use it?
       d) 2nd card slot for Express cards --- current Dell has two standard slots and I'm using both, though one is wi-fi which C610 didn't have built-in...and other is modem to replace failed built-in...D530 has only one slot, so having 2nd of any type is good.
       e) middle mouse button --- is that what I'm seeing? Or is it something else?
       f) recovery partition --- ok, nice but how much room does it take?
    6) Things that D530 has that T61 doesn't:
       a) 4th USB --- I'm used to only 1 now so even 3 would be big step up...
       b) 15" standard screen --- T61 is only a 14.1" screen and that extra bit of size would likely help, but I'm limited on physical dimensions to 13.5" total width (unusual situation) so a 15.4" wide screen isn't possible...I'm looking at SXGA+ in either case to maximize usage.
       c) recovery CD is standard --- so I'm presuming I'd have to create my own here?
    That, I think, about does it...so...any users willing to help me decide if a switch is good for me?
    Thanks!!!
    Update: It seems that phone tech support is only available for warranty period with IBM, whereas with Dell, I can still call for hardware tech help (to diagnose problem at least) for "lifetime" or well past paid period, as I've already done in past...comments?
    Update #2: Changed the incorrect "R"s to "T"! Duh!
    Message Edited by J_Hallgren on 12-28-2007 07:50 PM
    A current Dell Latitute user who was looking to maybe switch...But didn't.

    I finally made the switch to Lenovo and the Thinkpad line of notebooks and think this was the best move I have ever made in years! I've spent far too much money maintaining a separate notebook (Dell Latitude L400) several custom built desktops.  This December, I sold my desktops, my laptops (I had 2 L400's), and my 20" Aquous LCD TV to finance my Thinkpad T61.  It was well worth it!  I will try to answer your questions in this checklist, which I found to be quite similar to my own .... frighteningly exactly like my own....:
    Hardware Requirements
    IR: This is pretty outdated but functional.  I used to use a Palm with IR as well as an IR laser printer.  I ditched both for a PDA phone with bluetooth.  The laser printer is networked now
    S-Video: You might be able to get away with a TV tuner cardbus or a expres card.  There might also be external converters that convert from your VGA/DVI (DVI via port replicator) into any variety of video outputs.
    Serial: My older Palm had a serial port for the docking station - bluetooth is a good replacement
    Parallel port: I currently have a USB to parallel adapter in my bag just in case.  These are cheap cables and work well.
    Floppy: I keep a USB one of these just in case.  I find that having fewer input devices on my laptop and leaving them external help keep the machine lighter for my mostly mobile usage (e.g., my L400 with no inputs at all except 1 USB port).
    T61 Spare Battery: Uses ultrabay battery - I rarely use the DVDRW drive and leave the ultrabay battery in there while on the go.  DVDRW drive stays in the bag until needed.  I recommend you upgrade to the 9 cell battery with the advanced ultra bay battery, which will give u something like 9 to 12 hours of operating life.  If you are not a fan of the battery pack sticking out like crazy, stick to the letter box format laptop (not widescreen), which will provide the minimum amount of battery pack stick-out with the 9 cell battery.  The 6 cell will not stick out with the letterbox laptop but will stick out with the widescreen version.
    Support Options:  I rarely call support so I have no opinion here.
    Pricing: Price was not really a concern for me.  I purchased mine for the business look mainly, which Lenovo maintained well.  I don't like the shiny/plastic/toy look of Dell and Apple computers these days.  If anything, consider the premium an investment in the build quality of these machines (or a premium just for the good looks).  I particularly like the roll cage as well as active protection system that stops the hard drive as soon as the system detects excessive motion.
    Included Hardware Comparison:
    I like the mic, use it often for Skype and the built in 1.3MP webcam as well.
    Keyboard light.... kinda cute but not as functional because it simply is too small.  It was a cute idea that could have been made better had Lenovo opted for a backlit keyboard instead.  That would have been more functional and added to the "cool" factor.
    With regards to the Express Card and PCMCIA card slot, I rarely use either because everything is built in.  However, if you want that TV tuner, an express card or PCMCIA card slot is good.  If you opt for the built in media reader, you will be unable to use the express card as the media reader takes up that slot (I might be wrong, but I think the card reader is large enough that it takes up both slots, so u can't add anything anyway - but you should call pre-sales to answer that question).
    Middle mouse button: The three buttons in the middle are used for the trackpoint/joystick mouse controller.  I think the middle button is configurable to do various things.  I personally hate the joystick and can only use the touchpad.  The lack of a touchpad was the only reason I did not stick to the smaller 12.1" X line of laptops, which was really more in tune with my size requirements (too used to using the L400 sized machine).
    Recovery Partition: This is a cheap way for manufacturers to make it easy for people to recover their systems in case of crash - without the need for any documentation or disc media.  However, it makes it hard for people like me who only use machines after a clean format and customized install of Windows.  This partition is about 10GB and can be erased with special disk format or partition tools.  Windows itself cannot read or delete this partition.  With the minimum size of the hard drives available, this should not be an excessive space killer for most people.  I personally need only 7GB total for OS and apps.  The remaining data I work with is actually streamed from a 500GB gigabit NAS.  I might switch to a 32GB solid state disk one of these days when their performance comes more in par or exceeds traditional drives.
    Recovery CD: You can create your own from the recovery partition since Lenovo does not provide any.
    4th USB: I only use 1 or 2 as well.  1 for an external micro mouse (I love my touchpad, but it's just hard to use with Photoshop or CAD apps) and a second for a USB memory key.  My other devices i.e., scanner, external mouse, keyboard, are plugged in on my desktop through a USB hub that goes to a single port on my docking station.  So yes, your docking station will probably remove the need for more than 2 ports.  Although, I do find it odd there are only 3 ports... such an odd number.
    Screen Size: I personally wish I could have gotten the X series of laptops but the 14.1 was the only other mobile solution.  For the larger screen size, docking station to my 24" Dell 2405FP.  The compact nature of the T series makes it pretty thin and compact though... it was not too much bigger than my L400 - at least, not uncomfortably bigger.
    But yeah, I think if you make the switch, you'll be getting yourself a solid machine that will keep u going for years.  The Latitude line of Dell's were really good, but overall, I feel that the nature of Dell's manufacturing process is making it too "cookie cutter" and reducing its overall quality level.  Their earlier lines were awesome, like the D lines you mentioned.  But unless you get the ATG line, you just won't get the same level of quality they used to offer (in addition, the ATG line is wickedly too expensive - I'd rather get a Durabook for military grade spec at a fraction of the price).
    Anyway, have fun shopping! :-)
    And moderators or employees of Lenovo, don't you guys get referral bonuses for giving your employee discount code to friends and family?  *wink*

  • Some questions regarding x-fi pro 5.1

    Hi guys, i have some questions that i cant seem to find answers to that i hope someone can help me with.
    I recently bought an X-FI Pro 5.1 USB sound blaster.
    I have it plugged into my computer, and i have an optical cable from its spdif output connected to my wireless surround headphones (sony ds6500). These headphones can accept up to 7.1 signals in dolby digital and DTS and they "emulate" a surround through its 2 speaker elements.
    As a reference i can add that i have tried these plugged directly into my PS3 system and the 5.1 DD signal i get is really good! You can clearly hear what is behind and what is in front of you!
    I have installed the latest drivers and all available software from creatives website.
    1:
    And when reading about this card i often see people refering to the diffrent modes available (entertainment, game and cinema). But nowhere in any software can i find any option to change my mode, which seems to be stuck in entertainment. Whats up with this?
    2. I am getting a DD signal to the headphones, they indicate this so the system has the basics properly set up.
    But the biggest gripe i cant figure out is why it send the same audio from the FRONT and REAR.
    That is, i can hear no diffrence between the signal that is suppose to be the front speaker and the one that is suppose to be the rear speaker. What am i missing?
    3. I have about .5 sec delay of the audio when playing a game for instance, can this be solved?
    Please ask if you need any more info to help me solve this.
    Thanks in advance

    Okay, btw. you mixed point 1 with 2 i'll stay at original numbering
    1. [2.]) Well, i must confess the manual from creative isn't working correct (while the ones for other creative card work, just checked), it just shows the menue but the browsing page shows an error (if the one that is packed with your software is working and you could upload it that would help a lot). So i just searched for modes and found one so i thought it would have them. But now i took a deeper look and there is just the Entertainment Mode in Creative Software Suite. Also the Quick Start Guide shows there is not much software available, so i guess this card simply doesn't have it.
    2. [1.]) That should work either you can try 2/2.1 or Headphone (in X-FI Console and Windows Audio Console) as the Headphone is Stereo only with kind of virtual Surround like CMSS does. Btw. on your first post you wrote: kind of nice DD you hear. Thats wrong AFAIK. You hear Sonys Virtual Technology or maybe (as other Surround Headsets feature that) Dolby Headphone. Anyway it might be some of the creative options mix up with Sony way of surround sound. So did you try enable/deable CMSS (3D/Headphone/Virtual etc)? Else it just can be the configuration of speakers in Windows: Please note that the channel settings in Windows® Vista/7 can be set in Windows Audio Console, not in the X-Fi Audio Console. (Right click the speaker icon at the system tray, Select playback device, “Speakers”, Speaker Configures)
    3. Concerning the Delay: Under 'Creative audio control panel,' be certain that 'high speed' (2.0) is checked, and not 'full speed' (1.1) . Else you might need to switch back to Vista or XP drivers that obveausly helped some people to solve the delay problem. Or you try newest PAX drivers eg. wait on Danial_K's new X-Fi Pack (what i believe will be best bet as you also get new functions). I know creative drivers are a bunch of ****** and if you compare to AuzenTech oder ASUS f.e. the hardware isn't better too. Never going to buy creative again.

  • Question concerning WiSM operation

    I have a question concerning the operation of the wireless network and the WiSM in a 6500 that we have put in place. My customer has the following setup: On thier mainsite, they have a core 6500 with a WiSM module in place. They have 4 remote sites, with several APs at each remote site. Each remote site is setup in an all Cisco environment, where its typically AP --> cisco switch --> fiber to main site cisco switch --> core --> then on to where ever. I have an engineer telling me this, that whatever wireless data traffic (internet, anything) that hits the AP (at any site), it must go THROUGH the WiSM module. I would have thought that the WiSM module would be for ONLY management of APs, not for data traffic handling.
    Again, he says that ALL traffic (internet, etc) goes through the WiSM module, then on out through the infrastructure.
    I would have thought that traffic would go through the AP only, then through the infrastructure.
    Can you verify wheather data traffic from any wireless device through the AP actually traverses the WiSM module or not?
    Again, I thought the WiSM module would be only for management of APs. Thanks.

    The engineer is largely correct. By default, the APs will tunnel all traffic to the controller to be distributed according to VLAN/SSID. The controller and the AP work together to perform the normal wireless <-> wired bridging. This allows some flexibility in how the infrastructure handles mobile clients. There are many benefits to the Cisco Unified model (or LWAPP).
    We have three hospital campuses and only a couple remote wireless sites. They are all well-connected. As all our primary app servers are on one campus, we only have controllers on that one campus. The client traffic is bridged at the main campus.
    The Cisco Unified model does offer other modes of operation (H-REAP for example) that allow some local traffic to bypass the controller and be bridged by the AP to the local LAN. There are some caveats to this, however, and you'd want to read up on it before trying it:

  • Nub question concerning threads.

    I recently completed my first Comp Sci. class in Java and have decided to try to continue learning on my own. I am now trying to make a pong game, using a turorial. Unforunately my course did not cover threads in any way, shape, or form. I am able to get the beginning of the program to work (code posted below) and have no problems with it; however, I do have a few questions concerning what certain elements of the code do.
    1. Can someone please give a definition of a Thread in "Dummy" speach? I've looked up definitions and I can't seem to really grasp what they are and what they are used for.
    2. In my program there are two lines (32 & 79) where the thread priority is changed. Can someone explain what that means and how it affects my applet?
    import java.applet.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    public class BallApplet extends Applet implements Runnable
         //Declare variables to change posistion
         int x_pos = 10;
         int y_pos = 100;
         int radius = 20;
         boolean rWall = false,
         //The second image of the ball
         private Image dbImage;
         private Graphics dbg;
         public void init() {}
         public void start()
              Thread th = new Thread(this);
              th.start();
         public void stop() {}
         public void destroy() {}
         public void run ()
              Thread.currentThread().setPriority(Thread.MIN_PRIORITY);
              while(true)
                   while (rWall == false )
                        if (x_pos == 700)
                             rWall = true;
                        else
                             x_pos= x_pos + 5;
                             // repaint the applet
                             repaint();

                             Thread.sleep(20);
                        catch (InterruptedException ex)
                        Thread.currentThread().setPriority(Thread.MAX_PRIORITY);
         public void update(Graphics g)
              //initialize buffer
              if (dbImage == null)
                   dbImage = createImage(this.getSize().width,this.getSize().height);
                   dbg = dbImage.getGraphics();
              //clear screen in background
              dbg.setColor (getBackground());
              dbg.fillRect (0, 0,this.getSize().width,this.getSize().height);
              //draw elements in background

              g.setColor (Color.red);
              g.fillOval(x_pos - radius,y_pos - radius,2*radius,2*radius);
    }Thanks for any help, it is greatly appreciated.

    Questie,
    Please control yourself. Please.??
    As the program runs it is one thread. (You canthink
    of each thread as an independent program if youlike.
    This is not 100% accurate but close enough that
    it
    might help you understand)
    It will only confuse the OP
    You are a flat out wrong for a number of reasons.
    1) You seemed to miss the part where I did say that a
    doubling in peformance is fictious and is dependent
    on a number of factors.As i was telling that would only confuse the OP.Its better to be 100% precise when you explain to an OP
    2) You don't understand how a multi-process OS works
    in the least.Assumptions as usual
    3) You don't understand how processors work in the
    least.Well,what was i saying?
    2 and 3 are important because your point about
    context switching is not valid. First of all because
    this happens anyway because your program is not the
    only thing running the processor. Second because of
    the first point each thread gets a timeslice, you may
    with multiple threads each get a timeslice and these
    slices may (and often do) add up to more total time
    then the first got by itself.When you consider a solution to a problem the average and the worst case has more weightage than the best case.You are taking the best case assumption here-"because ofthe first point each thread
    gets a timeslice, you may with multiple threads each
    get a timeslice and these slices may (and often do)
    add up to more total time then the first got by itself".Now dont stop whining that you werent.Never take the best case always coz its the average and worst case which checks if the system festers to a condition beyond rectification
    For example (these numbers are fictional but I am
    trying to explain it so don't go off all half-cocked
    again please)
    Program with one thread. Each thread gets 100 cycles
    per second.
    Program with four threads. Each thread gets 50 cycles
    per second.
    The second program will finish in half the time as
    the first. Because even though each thread is slower
    as a whole the program is getting twice the cycles
    of the processor as before. You are taking the best case again and moreover its the cpu scheduling algo which decides the time slice and not you sitting on the CPU.I have a vague feeling that you have an idea that you are sitting on the CPU deciding the Time Slice.
    You need to understand something important here. Alot
    of the time when you are doing things in a program,
    and this doesn't just apply to IO here, you don't
    have to use the processor for each step. There is
    some shifting around of things to get them ready to
    be executed by the processor. A more advanced
    representation of this is to be found with
    Hyperthreading. Hyperthreading processors (single
    core) are of course single core but they act as if
    they were multi-core (multi processes) because while
    only one process is actually executing at one time
    the others are pipelined in such a way to make sure
    that the executing core of the processor has the
    least amount of idle time possible.Digression
    So that means on a basic processor each time you add
    2 numbers it takes 5 steps. And the processor core is
    idle 80% of the time.
    From where did you get that 80%?Stop coming up with your own numberes.This is no number game
    So for example while some data is being placed in the
    outbox new data is also being collected and is at
    step 2 already. In this model while we are still on a
    single core the core is now idle only 60% of the time[b]From where did you get 60% now
    So yes threading is very useful for IO and other
    operations that may block your program but they have
    more use than just that. Parallel execution can and
    will have some performance advantages (if designed
    properly) even on a single core processor without
    hyperthreading. In a well written multithreaded
    program when you add hyperthreading and multiple
    cores or multiple processors to the mix then you
    really have something.I never said it wont.Read properly what i have posted.I told dont take the best case always.You need to consider that too but the other two carries more weightage
    Please don't feel you ever have to post to correct me
    again thanks.^^
    Get ride of this self conceited attitude.Even if you have it dont make it public.Its not that you are always right cotton.I am not saying that you are wrong.If you have read my first reply i mentioned that i knew that you gave that example just to make the OP understand.The problem with that is that if the OP is unable to fathom out what you mean he is going to misconstrue whatever you have said and that propogates

  • Some questions regarding ESB system.

    Hi all,
    I've used my ESB system for a few months now, so I thought it would be interesting to look at what's going on in my database schema created by my esb system (oraesb). This led to some questions (and raising eyebrows), I hope some of you soa-experts might have an answer.
    * Is my system installed properly:
    I noticed that the oraesb schema created by running IRCA.zip installs only tables, views, topic queues and 1 procedure (create_queue). However, looking at the sql scripts in ${soaSuite_home}/integration/esb/sql/oracle there are far more stored procedures defined. Is it normal cq. okay that these objects are not installed or is my esb system faulty?
    * No constraints or indices:
    My system is yet very small, so it is still performing good/fast. I imagine that when the esb system is going further, performance and locking becomes an issue due to lack of indices on foreign key columns and primary/foreign constraints.
    * Only small part of schema used:
    When browsing through the tables of the oraesb user I notice that only a few tables are filled with data. For example all "Slide Tables" (this is the name given to these group tables in file ${soaSuite_home}/integration/esb/sql/oracle/wfeventc.sql) are empty. Is this normal? What kind of processes should enter data in these tables? What is the use of the "Slide tables"?
    * AQ-tables not being used:
    My esb system has five aq-queue tables (esb topics), but they are never used! I recall another thread on this forum about these queue tables growing enormous in size. I guess there must be a sort of switch somewhere to switch between jms-queue's and aq-queue's? Can anyone please explain how switch on the aq-queue's or point me to the proper documentation. I must have overlooked this in the documentation.
    Kind regards,
    Happy new year,
    H

    When your podcast is accepted you should receive an email telling you this and giving the URL for its page in the iTunes Store. The string of numbers at the end is the ID number.
    It usually takes somewhat longer for a new podcast to appear in the search results. Once you can find it by searching on the title, you can get the Store page URL, if you still don't know it, by control-clicking on the podcast image (or where it should be) and choosing 'Copy Podcast URL'.

  • Master iPad configurator question concerning cart syncing with different versions of iPads.

    I have a question concerning configurator syncing.Can the master iPad be a different version of iPad than the other synced iPads? For instance can iPad 2 be the master iPad to a group of iPad Air's? The iPad 2 has some fewer capabilities than the Air, would some settings or restrictions be left off of the iPad Airs if they were set up this way?  Thanks.

    There is no such thing as 'master iPad'.  If you're using Configurator or Profile Manager control of the setup is done from a Macintosh.

  • Some question for Sun Java System

    Dear all:
    I use Sun Java System We Server 7.0 for my project.
    But I have some question on SJSWS 7.0
    My server runtime information
    1. OS is RedHat Enterprise 3
    2. memory: 2G
    3. SJSWS version: 7.0 preview 3
    My questions
    Q1. The speed that download image is slower than the speed that run JSP page . The image's size to smaller than 5 KB. Is it possible to speed up download image
    Q2. My machine has 2GB memory, The system use swap area always. I think it isn't enough of SJSWS 7.0. How much memory size that SJSWS 7.0?
    Many thank for everybody

    first off, please try the Update 1 release in stead of technology preview releases: http://www.sun.com/download/products.xml?id=467713d6
    Q1> So I want to ask it is possible to display image and text at the same time like use Tomcat ?
    there is nothing in the server end (whether it's Tomcat or any other web server) that affects how the content is displayed on the browser.
    Q2>I detect The ram was used over 800M~1G by SJSWS7. My website has 80~150 user in workinghour
    Are you seeing Web Server process measuring so much memory?
    Q3> Is it possible that the admin server use SJSWS7U1 and some or all of node use SJSWS preview 3, because the server is running on line, I can't stop them for update server
    No - you want to switch to U1 anyway, since it's a released version (and is absolutely FREE for production use).
