Some QuickTime movies won't play after 10.4.4 upgrade

Hi,
I recently upgraded to 10.4.4 and now some QuickTime movies - mostly from Safari won't play any more. I do online training and none of those QuickTime movies will play. They load perpetually. They also work fine on my other machine (which I haven't upgrade from v10.4.3 yet)
According to System Profiler, I'm running QuickTime 7.0.0 - but I can't find 7.0.1 in the Apple downloads section. I'm not even sure if that will help.
Any ideas?

Most current version of QT is indeed 7.0.4, but Apple has removed that update and instead posted one that backs 7.0.4 back to 7.0.1.
Apple is now passively recommending against 7.0.4
One of the links that no longer works is any of VTC.com's training videos.

You said that QuickTime movies won't play "inside Firefox". Do they play inside Safari or when you directly access a QuickTime Movie file that's been saved on your Mac ?
See the Firefox Support article, [[Use the QuickTime plugin to play audio and video]]. It has some test links and explains how to enable the QuickTime plugin in the Add-ons Manager, in case it's been disabled in Firefox.
Like you say, QuickTime is built into the operating system on Mac OS so if you can't enable the browser plugin in Firefox or if it's missing, your best bet would be a Mac forum such as https://discussions.apple.com/

Quicktime movies won't play on Apple Website

I formatted my HD and reinstalled Snow Leopard. Last night and this morning I was watching the videos on http://www.apple.com/business/theater/#activecorners?sr=hotnews.rss, but tnight when I went back there, the movies won't play, nor will any other movies on the entire website. All I get is a Quicktime Icon with a question mark in the middle of it. I have both Quicktime X and Quicktime Pro 7 installed, with Pro in the Utilities folder.

After loading the AppleMPEG2.Component into the Quicktime folder in the Library, everything started working again. I'm not sure if that's what made it start working again though.

ITunes movies won't play after backing up library

I recently ran out of hard drive space on my macbook pro so I decided to move my iTunes library to an external hard drive to make space. Since doing so the movies that I bought on Itunes won't play. Everything else is fine. The music plays but the TV shows and movies won't play. There was an error message the first time that I tried to play it but I have never seen it again and I didn't write it down. Something about a file missing. Has anyone successfully fixed a similar problem?

iTunes prefs - Reset warnings.
Double click a movie to play it.
When it comes up and asks if you want to locate it, click Yes, then go to /iTunes/iTunes media/Movies on the external and find the movie.

Movies won't play after update to iPhone 2.1 Software

Help. I updated my 16GB iPod Touch with the iPhone 2.1 software to support applications. But now, when I go back and try to play my mp4 and m4v movie files on my iPod touch, they won't play. When I try to play them I get a warning that says "this movie could not be played". Videos I purchased from iTunes continue to play just fine.
Is this a new anti-piracy thing or something like that or am I having a problem with the iPhone 2.1 software? If I knew I wouldn't be able to watch my old movies and TV shows, I wouldn't have upgraded to 2.1.

Just a quick update on my issue... which seems different than most. To summarize, I tried updating from iTunes 10.6 directedly via USB. Got an empty progress bar when it "rebooted" after "successfully updating" to 5.1 with a memory allocation bar on itunes showing most the memory as allocated to "other", instead of the usual memory allocation to apps, music, pcits, etc. Rebooted the phone, but still came up with an empty progress bar, but would connect to itunes.. showing booted as 5.1, but again the memory was still allocated to "other". Started recovery process on itunes to try to bring back my old config, after which the iphone fully booted (into 5.1), but was completely.... recovered and re-installed all my apps, music, etc without a hitch and rebooted successfully, this time the memory allocation was correctly labeled, but somewhere I gained 2.0 GB of memory, even with all the same apps and music installed. I had to do some minor additional configurations (password lock had to be re-enabled), but otherwise, everything was working. A bunch of apps lost their stored settings... which I though strange as I expected the "backups" to store those settings as well. Otherwise, running 5.1 now without issues... seems much snappier than 5.0.1... but the process was nerve racking to say the least.
Best of luck with other "explorers" tyring to make the whole process work.

IWeb Published Quicktime Movie Won't Play in Safari. Only Quicktime Logo Shows.

I created a movie using iMovie and, after publishing my movie, using iWeb, to my MobileMe account, I visit the site using Safari, and can only see the Quicktime logo instead of my movie. When I use Firefox to view the page I created, it shows fine. I'm all up to date on my software and OS.
Any help you can offer me? It seems like all the Apple pieces aren't working well together.
All my other published movies still work fine. It's just this most recently-published one that won't show correctly.

They are compressed in H.264 .mov. Only one works well on my macbook leopard snow and air ipad ios8. The two other Jazz and Jazz2 run on iPad but not macbook. Sometimes I succeeded, but this is very rare. Can anyone tell me please what I should do or not do?

"Export as Quicktime Movie" -- won't play on other computers

When I use the "Export as Quicktime Movie" option and try to play it back on a Mac without FCP installed, it is missing components and won't play back in Quicktime Player. Of course, I can export with various compressions and then it's fine, but sometimes I want that big "original" file. Any thoughts? Thanks!

You do need the codec you are exporting to installed in the other machine if you wish to play the exported file. A variety of codecs are available only with FCP installed.
A couple of possible solutions are a very high res H.264 or Download [ProRes decoder|http://support.apple.com/downloads/AppleProRes_QuickTime_Decoder_1_0_forMac] to share a prores file between machines.

Quicktime Movies Won't Play on Godaddy's Server

I moved my site from valueweb to Godaddy a mouth ago all of my videos now show up with a question mark and won't play. I called them they said it is a problem in iWeb. Can any take a look at my page and let me know what you think.

In any case, if correctly uploaded you site should have more to the url, like the name of the folder which demo.html is in. You should upload the folder which has the same name as your site does inside iweb plus the index.html which is published alongside that folder.

DVD Movies won't play after 10.4.10 / DVD Player 4.6.1 Updates...

CDs will boot fine, blank DVDs will mount fine, but when I insert a DVD movie; the drive won't mount and the DVD player will not play my discs. I currently have a Pioneer DVR-109 installed in my PowerPC G5. Any information or help please.

IT DEFINITELY IS A TIGER ISSUE... here's a little workaround... although in a tricky way, i got my commercial dvd's to finally play. do the following and let me know if it will work for you as well.
-insert a movie dvd (commercial)
-when told that the disc is not readable and prompted to eject or ignore hit ignore
-you will not see the disc mount on your desktop
-open vlc and hit play. choose "disc" for destination and hit okay (don't try with apple's dvd player, IT WILL NOT WORK)
-you will now see the movie title in your playlist, select it and play it... it works!!
good luck and until we find a permanent fix we can still watch movies on our macs! BTW, i used vlc 0.8.6c for this test on 10.4.10. incase you're not familiar with vlc, it's a free video player and you can download it from number of places on the internet.

Quicktime movie won't play in firefox

Hi. I just made a movie and trailer that I put up on the web. My friend programmed the site. I used apple's compressor program to compress the video for web. I chose the quicktime 7 setting. The quicktime 7 setting in compressor seems to be compressing it into a .mov file. The movie plays fine in safari and internet explorer, but for some reson will not play in firefox.
Has anybody had a similar problem? Does anybody know why I can't get this movie to play in firefox?

Movies won't play after upgrade

After upgrading my system to OS X 10.4.10, the movies I downloaded will not play in iTunes. Double-clicking the file name, or selecting "play" from the controls menu does nothing--no error message, just inaction. There is no exclamation point in the file name, and the files are located where preferences say they should be. Purchased audio files all play ok, only the movies don't.
I can select the movies in the Quick-time player and they do play that way, but not within iTunes.
Any ideas?

Problem solved. I downloaded a Quicktime upgrade, and the movies now play.

Quicktime movie won't play in PC.

A QT movie, made on an IMac and copied to a flashdrive, will not play in my PC--even though the PC has Quicktime for Windows. I get the following message:
"the movie file 100_0816.dv cannot be found. without this file, the movie cannot play properly."
Any ideas? Suggestions? The movie plays just fine on the mac, but has to be viewed on a PC at school(yes, it's a project).

I answered your post. You've made a reference movie and not a "self contained" file.
How large in file size? KB's?

Movie won't play after renaming in iTunes and on iPod if iTunes crashes

So new MacBook Pro, new 80 5G iPod. All up to date.
I can rename my movies files with about 80% success, 20% of the time I get the spinning beach ball of death. iTunes hangs and I force quite (probably a bad idea) now the files, either on the iPOD or in my library, are unplayable. If I try to open them in Quicktime (Pro) it says there was an "Error opening File, the Movie could not be played"
It looks to me like iTunes is corrupting the file when it tries to rename the file. Any one experience this as well or know how to fix the files? I've tried fixing permissions and repairing the disk in Disk Utility.

I've noted that the beach ball clears if I wait for 1 hour.
I've also noted that it is much faster to rename the movie files themselves in the finder, the next time I play the movie in iTunes the name changes.
I've noticed several other messages about the spinning beachball of death. In case anyone is wondering don't force quit iTunes least you corrupt the file.

Rented movie won't play after 8 minutes in.

I rented a movie on my iTouch yesterday, then when I played it it stopped at 8 minutes 42 seconds and wouldn't play anything after that. I was determined to watch the movie so I rented and downloaded it again, it did the same thing. So today I synced my iTouch to my computer, updated it, tried the movies with the same problem, and rented the movie AGAIN via my computer. The movie did the same thing AGAIN! I'm soo frustrated! If anyone can help please do!!! I'd like to add that I rented a different movie and watched it the day before and it was fine, so I don't know what's going on with this movie!!

Movies won't play after downloading 2.0 software?

Yesterday I figured out that apps i purchased weren't working because I hadn't had the most recent software, so I downloaded 2.0. Before doing this, I had purchased a movie from itunes on my PC, which worked perfectly until i tried it for the first time after having the update. Every time I try to play the movie on my ipod touch (1st gen), a pop up comes up that says "This movie could not be played." Help Please?
