Some secure sites recommend closing the browser. Is closing the tab the same as closing the browser?

Secure sites recommend closing the browser. Is closing just the tab effectively the same?

you can try disabling ipv6 support in firefox & see if that helps - [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Server%20not%20found#w_ipv6]

  • Can't access some secure sites through proxy?

can't access some secure sites through proxy server on osx it just keeps going local authority couldn't be contacted, i had the same problem with parental controls, but now that is off and its still doing it, is there a setting or something i need to enable?

In my original post, not today's, I had said I was having the issues on the Mini, running OSX 10.6.8 and Safari v.5.1.5 for my bank's pill pay. I should have been more specific as to which machine and OSX Safari browser I'm having the T-Mobile problem with. My mistake.
It is on both the MacMini and now the Air too. A moment ago, I was able to log in to my.t-mobile.com on the Air, but after putting into my Bookmarks folder, I can't do it anymore. The Log in button comes up greyed out instead of green.
I'm also still having trouble with my bank's bill pay section on both computers too.
I wonder if it's related to the saving of the log in info or putting in the Bookmark Folder?

  • Do some secure sites disable autofill?

There is a site I use only about once every two or three months that I can not get Safari (or Firefox) to remember its passwords. Other https sites work fine with autofill. I've reset Safari, deleted preferences, repaired keychains, reset keychains and all the other things I've picked up off this forum and still never even get asked whether I want to remember the password.
Could it be the site that disables the autofill feature?

Let me answer your questions since you are asking here, though feel free to email any further ones:
Since a web site can ask a browser to turn off autofill, that would refer to any browser, not just Safari.
Not necessarily as not all browsers out there support auto fill or implement it in exactly same way.
Again, the "secure" issue is a semantic question that you and Kirk brought up. Nick made it clear he wasn't sure if that was the right way to word his question and that he just wants to know if a web site can disable autofill
It is an important definition to bear in mind as its erroneous to think that secure sites will always disable auto fill, and indeed non secure ones can disable auto fill too. Main reason for clarifying is someone above posted that secure sites wouldn't be secure if didn't disable autofill but thats not always true. However, as the OP has guessed himself, in his case most likely web site authors have disabled autofill on this particular website.

  • I was on a secure site because of the little lock in the right hand corner, now that I've installed this new version I don't have the lock any longer. What happened to the locket and how do I know if the site is safe for me to use a credit card on?

where is the lock in the right hand side saying your on a secure site?

The padlock has been replaced by the site identity button, for details on using it see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Site+Identity+Button

  • What happened to the padlock in the corner of the old Firefox that helped assure me that I was on a secure site along with the https in the url?.

I just downloasded the new Firefox and then went to pay some bills online. Although I see that the URL in the address still has an https at the beginning, I miss the the locked padlock in the corner that helped assure me I was more secure.

The padlock is no longer a part of Firefox; it can give users a false sense that a site is secure by not supplying all of the information about a site. Familiarize yourself with the '''''Site Identity Button''''' in Firefox:

  • Safari forgets some Top Sites after closing

    Hello!
My Safari always seems to forget the Top Sites I set.
I have set all twelve Top Sites with my favorite Webpages.
When I quit Safari and start it again in the last row of Top Sites two of my favorites are gone and have been replaced by other randomly chosen Webpages.
I already tried to reinstall Safari by deleting the App and loading it again from apple.com.
I also deletet the TopSite.plist files and tried to reset Safari. None of these things worked.
Its funny though, that when I take a look inside the .plist the top sites are correct and in the correct order. Safari just doesn't display them correctly.
Does anyone have an idea? I like the Top Sites feature really a lot but its behavior right now is quite annoying.

    Hi,
    Quit Safari.
Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.safari.plist file to the Desktop.
    Relaunch Safari. Try Top Sites.
If that didn't help, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder.

  • I just upgraded to Firefox 4--what happened to the secure site icon at bottom of page?

I just upgraded from Firefox 3.6 to 4. There used to be a secure site icon at bottom right of secure pages. Clicking on the icon opened a window with all security info for that page. Now there is no icon. To get the same info I now have to click on the button in the address bar and then click again on the "more information" button. This is not intuitive and seems like a step backward. Is there a way to bring back the old secure site icon?

  • Safari won't open some secure pages

It's not just Safari, though - Firefox, Chrome, Opera.
It's not just my iMac either - MacBook Pro *AND* iPad.
Some secure sites simply won't open.  It looks like they load (the timer thing goes through the URL) but blink - no page. Just a blank browser window.
    Any clues??
I've tried reinstalling browsers, trashing preferences, turning off all security measures - pretty much anything you can think of.  OS is 10.8.3, browsers are all updated to most recent versions.
I'm stumped.  It wouldn't be a big deal except for one page that I NEED to get to for my job. I can't keep running over to my neighbor's house and using IE on his Windows 7 PC - not only is it irritating him, but it's making me crazy that something that works so effortlessly on his crappy PC won't work AT ALL on my Macs!
    HELP!

3 devices - they all connect using the same router/modem ?
can you connect at neighbouring house using ipad or macbook pro ? - that would maybe confirm the issue being with your connection.

  • Safari user name and password for secure sites

I just sent the following to "Mac OS X Feedback"
Some secure sites like brokers, e.g., Ameritrade, do no allow autofill in Safari for the user name and password. In fact Safari does not even ask if you want to remember the user name and password just entered for such sites.
I would like to suggest that something be done for users in such cases:
    1) A dialog box comes up warning that this website does not allow autofill.
    2) A suggestion is made as to what network setting needs to be changed to allow autofill to work
    3) A fix in Safari to take care of this problem
    4) Add something to Safari help
Does anyone have a work around for this problem?
Mac Mini (Intel Core Duo)   Mac OS X (10.4.5)
Mac Mini (Intel Core Duo)   Mac OS X (10.4.5)
Mac Mini (Intel Core Duo)   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Think about what would happen if someone gained access to your Mac, say while you were briefly away from your desk or whatever. They launch Safari, go to the login web page of (for instance) your bank & discover that autofill has helpfully filled in your user name & password so all they have to do to get access to your accounts is click the login button.
From there, they can transfer all your assets to some other account (theirs!) or invest in FlyByNight.com or whatever -- they can do anything your password lets you do with any password-protected account ... anything!
Take this a step further. Say you have enabled auto-login to your primary account at startup, or have used an easy-to-guess account password for it. Someone steals your computer ... & with it potential access to all your online accounts with autofill entries.
Not a pretty picture, is it?

  • Cisco RV042 - Dual Wan Load Balancing - Secure Site (HTTPS) Trouble

    PID VID :
    RV042 V03
    Firmware Version :
    v4.0.0.07-tm (Aug 19 2010 19:19:50)
Ever since I setup my RV042 with load balancing using the Dual Wan system I have had trouble staying connected to some secure sites. After doing some searching I found that the potential issue is the IP change mid session.
Although my interface is significantly different I was able to find the same area in my RV042 admin area however, it doesn't seem to work.
    System Management
    > Dual Wan
In Wan 1 & Wan 2 I have HTTPS and HTTPS Secondary all forwarded to use Wan 2 under Protocol Binding
This however has not managed to do anything at all for my network and every computer conneceted experiences the same HTTPS irregularities at some websites.
I'm sure I must be doing something wrong, but I don't know what it is.
Both incoming connections are from the same service provider although the plans are different.
Any help with this would greatly help me stop losing my mind trying to fight with my website control panel for 10 minutes to just login and get something done.
    Thanks

Any ideas or advice from anyone?

  • Safari and iTunes having problems accessing secure sites

I've been having problems with iTunes not being able to access the iTunes Store. I can browse the store but can not add anything to my shopping cart. I decided it was time to see if Safari was having problems with secure sites and sure enough I discovered that it can not access secure sites either. The only way I've been able to access secure sites is via Firefox.
A typical scenerio is that I can not log onto my Apple ID. As soon as I click on the "sign in ID" link I get a pop-up stating that a secure connection to store.apple.com can not be established.
So far I've tried clearing the Safari cache and deleting site keys from my stored key chains. Nothing helps.
    I'm running Safari 1.3.1 and iTunes 4.9.

    Can anyone help?

    Hi grdy83,
    What are your cookie settings?
*[[Enable and disable cookies that websites use to track your preferences]]
*[[Permissions Manager - Give certain websites the ability to store passwords, set cookies and more]]
You can delete all history when you exit Firefox, but it seems odd that a secure page that should expire is still accessible. It may be a timed expiration, but check the third party cookie settings to make sure it is not allowed to be saved.
I hope this helps prevent this from happening again.

Ok, first thing, why are you doing anything with WAMP or XAMPP when you're running a Mac? MAMP should be what you want unless you're not explaining part of what you are trying to do.
2nd thing, I haven't used MAMP in a while, but there are two possibilities for not seeing what you want to see once you have MAMP turned on. One possibility is that you already have "Web Sharing" turned on in your Sharing Preference Pane. If that is the case, port 80 will already be taken and you'll be seeing the default Apache install (files are stored at /Library/WebServer/Documents/). This would push MAMP to either not turn on it's web serving capabilities, or to push it to another port. The other possibility is that MAMP defaults to another port anyway. So instead of localhost, you might have to type in localhost:8080 or something similar. I believe the control panel that gets installed can take you to the currently MAMP-served page, and it can also help you change which port your serving on.
80 is the default port for web serving and the ONLY port that will let you get straight to the server without having to type in webaddress.com:port# instead of just webaddress.com.
