Some sites (nytimes) take forever to load - seems to relate to graphics or CSS files. Problem occurs in safe mode. No problems on same sites using Chrome.

By forever, I mean that the loading icon spins and spins. Often, but not always, if I stop the load and reload, the page loads instantly.

Hello sjkappel,
Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache.
Note: ''This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to.''
To clear cache and cookies do the following:
#Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
#Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
#Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
#From the details list, check ''Cache'' and ''Cookies'' and uncheck everything else.
#Now click the ''Clear now'' button.
Further information can be found in the [[Clear your cache, history and other personal information in Firefox]] article.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
Thank you.

    kernel26beyond 2.6.19.beyond1-1
Basically its a kernel 2.6.19 problem for me, where udev takes forever to load. I've narrowed it down to the problem module and its pata_amd. loading it with modprobe -v showed no errors, just takes 2 min or so to load. I've tried to blacklist the module, and oddly enough my hd works fine but my network doesn't work anymore "no route to host".
Using DFI nforce 4 (so no intel controller). sata II HD. turned off my cdrom in the bios (ide) just to be safe.
Here's some errors I noticed in logs

basically just gotta blacklist pata_amd and ata_generic. for some reason only blacklisting pata_amd would break my internet. *shrug*

Strange, I have a similar setup and pata is not loaded when using the following hooks:

But if this still does not work, blacklist pata_amd and load amd74xx via rc.conf.
I'm speaking mainly from memory, I'll check it out when I get home from work. It aperantly failed booting up this morning, so I can't ssh in to try and fix it
Thanks for the help so far btw, been going crazy about this problem.
EDIT: Update (figured I won't make a new post)
Ok basically I tested it out a bit with different results:
Kernel26: takes 2-3 min at udev then boots up and works fine.
kernel26beyond1: takes 2-3 min at udev then hangs at "mounting filesystem"
kernel26beyond2: takes 2-3 min at udev, then boots fine, but internet doesn't work.
    Disabling pata_amd: breaks internet.

  • I have IE & Firefox on both my laptop and desktop. Why is Firefox so much slower than IE7? Firefox seems to take forever to load pages!

I have a HP laptop & Dell desktop with IE7 and Firefox. I use Firefox more as I like it better than IE, yet the pages in Firefox load so slow. I thought the new version of Firefox was so much faster, but it seems to drag along and take forever to load pages. Why is this??

  • Nothing is working right, it freezes all the time and takes forever to load

The first time I switched to Firefox 4 it worked really fast but since then it takes forever to load, the pages freeze, some sites don't recognize 4. It is very irritating trying to just get on the internet. Facebook will load slower that ever and freeze constantly. Other sites partially load then freeze. Typing anything will often freeze in mid word. I hate this. What is going on?
What is all this stuff at the bottom in the "Installed plugins" section?

Here's a novel thought. Take it back to the vendor. Should have done that one week ago.

  • Small Quicktime movies & music show as 'Q' icons - take FOREVER to load

I have a site - joelplimmer.com (I created a re-direct - it's my iWeb .Mac site really) and the Quicktime content is taking forever to load - it USED to load fairly quickly - I have gone into 'package contents' in my 'domain' file in application support and looked at which files are too large - strangely, most are < 10 meg, but many of those are ones that take forever to load. I've minimized some of the larger files I had on the site - still no luck on .Mac (it looks fine when I publish to a folder, of course). So, I tried deleting EVERYTHING in my joelplimmer.com folder on my iDisk and re-publishing from scratch, STILL the same thing. I have tried this from different computers, both Mac & PC - with the same result. Does anyone know what could be the problem?

Of course it takes ages to load.
4 movies on a page, 6 audio files on a page, I lost count. I left before the encore.
    Most problems are not technical.
Just using your brain will solve them. Try it.

  • Devices and Printers Menu takes forever to load

Devices and Printers Menu takes forever to load in WIndows 8.1.
For some reason the green bar goes all the way across the top of the screen before the devices and printers
menu will load. It then loads without an issue after waiting for almost two full minutes.
This is a core I7 Win 8.1 PC with 16GB of ram and an SSD so it screams otherwise.
I do have a lot of devices on my home network but my windows 7 PC which is on the same network loads the devices
and printers menu almost instantly. If it were a device hanging up you would think that the Windows 7 PC would also be affected but it isn't. I will say that Windows 8.1 does identify a whole lot more devices that fall into the category of "multimedia
devices" on the network than does windows 7.
I have tried accessing the menu from safe mode both with and without networking and it takes just as long
    to load.
I have noticed that most of the devices in Devices and Printers also show up in file explorer under network.
There is however no delay accessing that menu.
I don't really have a good feeling as to how to go about troubleshooting from here?

    Hi,
For the issue, it seems one of services related to device stopped.
I suggest you check the services to see if they start.
Please refer to the following link:

Note: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support. This contact information may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this third-party contact information.
We can try testing if the method in Windows 7 can work on Windows 8.1 computer.
If it doesn't work, I suggest you remove all device to test it.
Meanwhile, let us try SFC tool to check the result.

No matter what wi-fi I'm connected to or browser I'm using, webpages take forever to load or they never load at all. Other computers do not have any problems. How can i fix this?
I've tried safari, chrome, firefox...I've cleared the cache as well. This has been going on for several months and used to be tolerable as it was not every website. Now it has become every website and is impossible to deal with. My roommates computer and my cell phone connect fine. I'm fully connected to the router yet websites don't load. I'm using 10.7.5. Thank you!!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Quicktime videos take forever to load on my system

Is it me alone, or does anyone have the same problem? I have a excellent system, and nothing takes forever to load on it, only Quicktime videos. The only reason why I use quicktime on my XP machine is to watch the videos that are downloaded from my Kodak camera memory card since the camera saves its video files as quicktime videos, but it takes forever for the video files to load after I have downloaded them and saved them into a folder on my system. When I want to go back and view the videos, the folder freezes until all the videos, even if it is only one video in the folder loads. Why is that? Other video files load immediatley from avi, wmv,to divx, etc.
    Does anybody have a solution?

  • Question 1: new website takes forever to load.

I just published my first website. The first page is all words and yet it takes forever to load. Why is this?
    The site is: http://shortpoem.org/
Any suggestions on how to speed things up? Thank you.
(The credit page mentions Sandvov, however I removed those pages.)

It could be that the audio track is the biggest part of the file size. CD audio (AIFF format) is about 10MB's per minute and, if that's what you used, reducing the quality and adding compression could dramatically reduce the file size.
iTunes can open AIFF and convert it to AAC or MP3 formats. Use half the frequency (22050) and a bit rate of 96 to get it down in size.

  • Microsoft Office 2008 & other programs take forever to load & run

Ever since I installed Snow Leopard on my laptop, my entire Microsoft Office 2008 suite takes forever to load and to operate. It also seems to have slowed down the processor for almost all other applications, especially Safari. I have Snow Leopard on my desktop as well, and both computers are at least 2 years old but are Intel-based, and only the laptop (which is newer - 2008) seems to have consistent speed problems when loading the Microsoft software. I've uninstalled and reinstalled more than once, and it never seems to do anything. I've even used a newer version of the software with the same results. Any thoughts? I know very little about programming language, etc., I'm just a habitual user, and I use both computers every day, so the slow speed of the laptop is extremely frustrating. It doesn't matter if other programs are running or not, it's always slow to open and 9 times out of 10 slow to operate, and probably 7 times out of 10 it affects performance of other programs as well.

    Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app
I'm really sorry your having these issues. I used to always run apple's Disk Utility with past Mac OS. I'm really happy with 10.6. And one of it's big selling points at one time was that it's a leaner meaner version of Mac OS X.
Now, in using it, if it is new to you, it cannot repair the active start-up HD. But I think it can "verify" and look for issues and then let you know if you need to pursue further use of the application. To actually make repairs to your start-up HD, either boot from another HD or the Mac OS install CD. To do that, restart your machine with the CD inserted and while holding down the "C" key. It's been awhile, so I hope I have this right and am not misleading you.
It can be a tedious process. But good for you in having more than one Mac to work from.
My apologies if you have already done the above and are well beyond what I've written here. Disk Utility really gives and end user like myself away to trouble shoot a HD.
Also, inside your Apple drop down menu for "About this Mac," you can opt for "More info . . . ." This shortcut opens System Profile. While there, look for Diagnostics under Hardware. This tells you the results to the Power On Self-Test and when it was last performed. Also while there, look at your Memory. To the far right of its table for each installed memory module is Status for each. That should read "OK."
Best of luck to you! Slow machines are never fun!

  • TS5367 why do images take forever to load in my mail?

just upgraded to 10.8.3 and now my mail takes forever to load images, banners, html, etc. even images that were previously loaded arent there when I reopen the program Mail v6.3

Seems like it is still in the downloading process which may provide some lag time. Do you have slow or limited internet?

  • Why does my Windows Live Hotmail take forever to load?

Over the past month or so, my Firefox browser hasn't been playing very nicely with Windows Live Hotmail. For one, it takes forever to load the page, and I stare at a white screen for a good 3 minutes before it finally loads. HughesNet is my Internet Service Provider, and it shouldn't take that much time for my Hotmail to load. I could see it if it were a DialUp connection being this slow! The other thing I want to mention is that for some reason, my SilverLight plugin keeps crashing! All of my 3rd party plugins are fully up to date, including my SilverLight. It won't allow me to upload pictures to attach to e-mails! Instead, I get a sad face, telling me that my SilverLight has crashed! What is the problem that is causing this? So you know, I have the latest version 9.0.1, and it is fully up to date. Thank you. Michael Gronemeyer

i have updated to Firefox (safe mode), have updated flash player and have gone through pages and pages of help articles, but any and all of my facebook games (farmville, petville, farmtown, etc.) take forever to load and after loaded move extremely slowly AND never load fully.
