Some start up questions (help please)

Hello everyone. My name is Tom and its very nice to meet everyone.
I have been, historically, using harware sequencers for my music (Korg M series, Korg O series, and most recently a Fantom X7).
I have decided that I want to go the DAW route for my music for various reasons. At any rate here is what I'll be ordering next week....
MacBookPro 2Ghz 15" (1 gig of ram to start 2x 512)
Logic Pro
M-Audio Keystation Pro 88 (my main instrument is piano)
M-Audio Oxygen 8 v2 (I'll use this for synth sounds, strings, brass, triggers, etc)
Presonus Firebox (portability)
SIIG FireWire 800 1-Port ExpressCard/34 (the MBP only has 1 Firewire port)
My Book Pro Edition 500 GB Ext HD (will connect to the FW 800 expresscard)
Pair of Behringer Truths B2031a (I listened to these in a local store and I was really impressed.)
I have various other instruments that I will use (guitars, bass, steel, etc) during recording but those arent the focus of these questions.
To the point...
1. Should I connect both Midi In and Out for the Keystation Pro?? (The midi thing is somewhat new since I'm coming from the hw sequencers and I never midi'd my boards together) I understand that I'll go from the midi out to the s/pdif cable in but will it be necessary for information to be returned to the ks pro?
2. On the Presonus Firebox, is the s/pdif cable included with the interface??
3. Any general impressions with my initial setup?? Please keep in mind that I will do all the music by myself... one track and one instrument at a time. (Which is why I thought the firebox would be sufficient for my needs) Any concerns with my ideas for setting it up?? KS Pro midi'd to presonus. presonus FW 400 to Mac. Oxygen 8 USB'd to Mac. My Book hard drive FW 800 through expresscard expansion. Will I have any compatibility issues or conflicts?

Welcome to the forum!
1) your keystation and Oxygen 8 will send and receive midi to Logic thru your usb connection. You can connect any other midi devices thru the keystation or using the Oxygen or Firebox midi ins & outs. Logic will recognize all of your midi connections. you just need to assign which midi keyboard or other outboard device is connected to which midi port in Logic's environment
2) yes the spdif cable is included
3) Your setup sounds nice. I personally don't like the firebox, I had one for a short time and got rid of it, but I know a few guys here use one and like them.

Hi Vishal,
I'll try to answer your questions as best I can.
1) It is definitely possible to preload data to the 32MB memory (per group) and start the acquisition after you have preloaded the memory. There are example programs on ni.com/support under Example Code for pattern generation and the 6534 that demonstrate which functions to use for this. Also, if your PC memory buffer is less than 32MB, it will automatically be loaded to the card. If you are in continuous mode however, you can choose to loop using the on-board memory or you can constantly be reading the PC memory buffer as you update it with your application environment.
2) Yes, your data will automatically be loaded into the card's onboard memory. It will however be transferred as quickly as possible to the DMA FIFO on the card and then transferred to the PC memory buffer through DMA. It is not going to wait until the whole onboard memory is filled before it transfers. It will transfer throughout the acquisition process.
3) Vishal, searching the example programs will give you many of the details of programming this type of application. I don't know you application software so I can't give you the exact functions but it is easiest to look at the examples on the net (or the shipping examples with your software). Now if you are acquiring 512 bytes of data, you will start to fill your onboard memory and at the same time, data will be sent to the DMA FIFO. When the FIFO is ready to send data to the PC memory buffer, it will (the exact algorithm is dependent on many things regarding how large the DMA packet is etc.).
4) If I understand you correctly, you want to know if you waste the other 6 bits if you only need to acquire on 10 lines. The answer to this is Yes. Although you are only acquiring 10 bits, it is acquired as a complete word (16bits) and packed and sent using DMA. You application software (NI-DAQ driver) will filter out the last 6 bits of non-data.

New/Additional phone line question- help please!

I am after some advice, and every time I call BT I get passed around as I am not 100% on what to ask for, or who I should speak to.
Basically, we have 2 phone lines coming into the house. One line/number + broadband signal goes via a repeater to the office which is a separate building across the garden (approx 300m but I am not sure on the actual distance). The signal is not great, for the broadband particularly - often drops out etc. To solve this we would like a new physical line installed in the office building to give us a separate phone and broadband package to that of the main house, but ideally keeping the same number as we currently use in the office. The office is used everyday for working from home and so is important to us.
Does that make sense? I fully expect that an engineer will need to look at the site, and there will be a (significant) charge for the line to be installed (underground pipe work for cables already exists from house to office building and so this could be utilised). Do I just place an order for a new line online, and wait for an engineer's visit? Can I deal with changing the number at a later date if that is easier for the system to deal with? Last time I rang BT, I was told I needed to speak to the exceptions team, when I was put through to them she told me all I needed to do was speak to customer services, customer services thought I was trying to move home and then didn't seem to understand what I needed (but it was probably how I was explaining it!).
I would be so grateful if someone could point me in the right direction, or give me tips on what to ask for. My main worry is keeping the same phone number as it would be so much easier.

Can't start Macbook..help please

Ok, so I was in my Windows partition and I shut down to restart to Mac and it won't load.
It's just the blue start up screen for a while. So I put in the Mac OS installer and it takes it a while to load, but it does. And wants me to reinstall it. It shows my hard drive and my windows partition. But when I try to install it on the disk, it says there is an error. So i went to my disk utility and tried to repair my disk. IT says that there was an error coming out of the process or something.
What do I do?
I need help please. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

If Disk Utility is showing a problem that it can't fix, then you'll need something stronger such as DiskWarrior. BTW, exact message help tremendously.

Flashing folder start-up. HELP PLEASE

Hey, so a few days I go I was using my MacBook Pro bought in June 2012 ( latest model), and while on safari it completely froze. Because of this I left it alone for about 30 mins, but I still had the multi coloured spinner spinning, so I decided to manual shut down my computer by holding down the power/shut off button on the right hand-side top corner. Later on I attempted to turn on my MacBook again, and the a flashing folder with a question mark appeared. So again i turned off manually using the power button. I stopped using my laptop for a few days hoping that it just needed to cool off for a bit. But surely, as I tried to turn it on again after not using for a few days the same flashing folder with the question mark appeared. I've looked online for some solutions and as a miracle I someone said to press down the shift button after turning it on before the grey screen, I did so and managed to log back in, in safe mode boot. While still in safe boot I went into system preferences -> start disk and selected which disk I wanted my MacBook to use when turning on. I then logged off and turned off my MacBook. Went back to turn it on a few minutes later and it was all in working order! So happy. However the next day I turned it on and the flashing folder with the question mark was up. I tried to do the shift old down thing again like last time but its not working!! Please help me I really need access to my laptop again!! Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated! :)

That means the system can't find an Operating System to boot the computer from. More then likely your hard drive has died as if it was just the Mac OS X partition the system would boot to the Recovery HD partition automatically. But since that is not happening the drive is probably dead. Take it to an Apple store to be checked out and fixed under the warranty.

Stuck in unix command line during start-up. Help please.

I have an iBook G3 running on 10.3.9 (opaque, 16 VRAM).
After experiencing a number of freezes and crashes, I was having problems starting up with the system on the hard drive. I booted up with Disk Warrior 3.0 and it told me my directory was severely damaged so I rebuilt it using Disk Warrior.
After it was successfully rebuilt, I quit DW and re-booted. When the computer restarted first I got the usual gray screen with the Apple logo and the moving gear wheel. After about 20 seconds the screen becomes black with the following text in white in the upper left corner: "local host: / root #" and then a white cursor mark. I have repeatedly tried to re-boot but get the same black screen and text. I booted with the original OS X install disk and used Disk Utility to repair permissions but I still get the black screen and white test on start-up.
I don't know what to do. Please help!

Powerbook Doesnt Start Up! HELP PLEASE!

Please help my powerbook wont start up! It goes past the gray apple loading screen and then it moves on to a blue screen several minutes later... and never goes passed that point. Any suggestions? Please any help is greatly appreciated.

Well, I just had the exact same experience. It was preceded by about a week of increasingly slow application launch times. I tried putting the machine into firewire target mode - no luck. My DVD drive has been non-functional for about a month now, so couldn't boot off the OS DVD, but I do have a recent bootable backup on an external Firewire drive, so I connected it and booted off that. Ran Alsoft DiskWarrior, and got some very bad news: the hard drive has had a mechanical failure.
Prognosis: not good. Looks like I lost a week's worth of work (date of my most recent backup). The drive appears to be entirely unreadable at this point.

New to Solaris question help please

Just successfully installed Solaris 10 on VMWare ESXi and assigned it 50GB of HDD space. When I type df -h I see that 79% of my disk is used and the rest of the storage is nowhere to be found.
I'm new to Solaris is this because the rest of the drive hasn't been partitioned? Some help would be greatly appreciate so that I can take advantage of the rest of my volume...

I don't recall allocating anything during installation.Which means that you did a default installation with no customization. Looking over your file system layout confirms this.

From this, I understand that /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0 has a size 4.6GB (assuming the OS is installed here) when I download items to the desktop, it appears they are placed in this "disk"?Depends on where you told Firefox to place them by default. You could just as easily configure it, Edit, Preferences, Main, Downloads, tell it to place the downloads somewhere else.

Correct. Solaris is a multi-user system that leaves plenty of space for user home directories which default to /export/home. IMNSHO the space that is leaves behind for / is usually small enough to make the system unusable after applying only a few patches. If you switch to OpenSolaris 2008.11 you can ZFS which will mitigate most of these problems.
Just a little confusing to a newbie, coming from a Microsoft background (forgive me!) I am used to seeing volumes as icons in My Computer.The Windows tool for managing disks is nice and graphical.
What's your advice for managing volumes, formating to ZFS, maybe some visual method of understanding volumes?If you haven't done much with the system then you might consider switching to OpenSolaris with the caveat that some parts of Solaris are not available in OpenSolaris because of licensing issues. However, for someone who's just starting out you won't miss them.
For understanding, http://www.docs.sun.com / Solaris / Administration and then look for the two books on Disk Management. One is for ZFS and the other is for UFS. ZFS and Volume Manager Administration

Simple java question, help please

please help
-i am just starting out in java and im havin an early problem. Im trying to run a small java script from a commant prompt but im getting the following error after i enter this command at my prompt
c:\javatest>javac HelloARP.java
javac is not as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
when i enter
c:\java -version
i get the following message: registry key software\javasoft\java runtime enviornment\current version has value of 1.1 but 1.4 is requiured
error: could not find java.dll
error: could not find java 2 runtime enviornment
-im sure this is a simple error on my part. all im trying to do is run my first lil program that i saved in notepad, its only 5 lines long. here is the lil test program im trying to execute

First of all uninstall your current JDK installation, if you can get to the registry delete the registry entries for the old version of java which was there on your machine.
Now do a fresh install of your j2sdk1.4.1, make sure that you will install the JRE with the J2SDK1.4.1.
Once you are done, set your classpath in autoexec.bat if you are using Windows 95/98
or set your environment variables if you are using Win NT/2000/XP.
If using solaris or other unix flavors see the included installation instructions provided.

CS3 Questions, Help please?

I've been gone for a while and I used to know this stuff backwards and forwards. Now that I have come back, I just can't seem to remember some things re. InDesign and shortcuts and keys. I've tried going to help but these don't come up in help and I did not get a book with CS3. I set my shortcut prefs to shortcuts for Quark 4 as in past.
1. Is there a way to get the display preference to default to high quality display so it is there all the time?
2. Where is the default for copy and then the paste going in front instead of pasting in back.
3. I can use my shift/command/> to increase font size (and where is the preference for changing it by 1 point instead of 2 please) but the shift/command/< is not working at all.
4. I have some documents that when I try to increase the leading by 1 point, the leading is increasing drastically almost as if there is a lock to some grid on but all the lock to grids and lock to baseline are not selected. I don't know who created these documents but I cannot find where they appear to be locked to grids. Any ideas.
Thank you in advance for any help. I've been going thru tutorials but can't find the answers to these and I used to know these so well.

Ann, I responded to your other query too, but are you sure you don't have "Paste Remembers Layers" turned on? If stuff you copy is on a layer that is behind something else, it will still be behind it after pasting because it will paste to the layer behind.
Check your Layers flyout menu to see if this is the case.

i use iphone 3gs and im looking for apps that let me control all my oncoming and outgoing calls and let me delet them one by one rather deleting them toghter.
im having lots of trubble with my wife because of that, everytime she looks at my phone and found the call log empty she goes mad at me, so please i need some help

1. if you have something to hide on the call log, buy another phone and don't expect us to help you cheat.
2. You cannot delete individuals calls - you should have thought of that before getting up to no good

Memory Question Help Please

Alright ive never really been to smart on memory and how it runs and all that. The Question is I have a gig of ram on my mac book but right now it says only 30 mb is free

active: 524mb
inactive: 247 mb
used: 993mb
now is that normal cause i mean im hardly using anything im using like safari, aim, and itunes. seems like more memory should be free and crap.

IMac will not start up. Help please!

Earlier today I was surfing the Net with Safari. Suddenly, the page I was loading stopped loading. The arrow pointer would not move if I moved the mouse. The menubar clock's seconds stopped changing. The entire system was frozen. After about 15-20 seconds, the iMac's fans started blowing louder. After another 30 seconds, I gave up and tried the force quit key combo. No dice. So then I held down the power switch, forcing a shutdown.
Now, when I try to boot my iMac G5, I get one of 3 outcomes:
(a) I hear a faint fan sound, and perhaps the hard drive makes a sound, but nothing else happens.
(b) I hear the startup chime, but the chime doesn't finish. It's cut off and the iMac turns off. Sometimes the light on the front of the iMac comes on for a moment, sometimes not.
(c) The iMac starts up normally. After a minute or so, the whole system freezes again.
I use this Mac at work for all my medical records. Now I have no access to my medical records (but I do have a backup, thankfully). Without a working medical record system, I've had to cancel all my patients for the day and I'm scrambling to find a solution.
I found an article in the Apple knowledgebase. I followed the article step by step. It's called iMac G5: Troubleshooting when your computer won't turn on, and can be found at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908 .
With the back cover removed, and the power cord plugged in, LED 1 lights.
When I hit the internal power button, LED 2 and LED 3 lit up, and OS X started up. The login window appeared. Since my keyboard and mouse were not plugged in, a window came up saying that the iMac was looking for a bluetooth mouse. I don't have one, so I plugged in my USB keyboard and mouse, but the mouse never saw power (the red laser never came on). From that point forward, I couldn't get the mouse to work and after maybe half a minute, the fans started blowing again. So I think this was the same as my Mac starting normally, but then freezing. This time, it froze before I could login.
One thing I noticed: the iMac had been off and unplugged for more than 45 minutes. The last time it had been off and unplugged for more than 45 minutes, when I plugged it in an tried to boot it, it actually started up and I got to the finder. But then after I started to run Disk Utility, the OS froze up again. So it seems, if I leave the iMac off and unplugged for some length of time (45 minutes works), it will boot into OS X.
Okay, so on with the steps described in the article. I held down the internal power button, and the iMac shut down. I hit the SMU button (with the iMac off). Then, I tried the internal power button again. This time, LED 1 lit, and LED 2 lit, but then LED 3 does NOT light up, and the computer does not start up. I just hear a light fan blowing (near the processors, I think) and the hard disk makes a few clicks, nothing more. No chime, no display.
So then I reset the SMU again, by pressing the SMU button (which turned off the computer). Then I pressed the internal power button again. The computer still doesn't start up normally. Same as above.
Reading through the article it asks, after pushing the internal power button, does LED 2 come on momentarily, or not at all? Actually, neither. It comes on, and stays on. The article has no instructions for you if LED 2 comes on and stays on. At this point, I'm stuck.
So I checked another knowledgebase article, About the iMac G5 diagnostic LEDs. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86815
It says:
- LED 1 indicates that trickle voltage from the power supply has been detected. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned off and your power supply is working correctly.
- LED 2 indicates that the main logic board has detected proper power from the power supply when the computer is turned on. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and the power supply is working correctly.
- LED 3 indicates that the computer and the LCD display are communicating. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and video signal is being generated.
- LED 4 lights only if the computer detects an over-temperature condition. This LED will be OFF when the computer is turned on and running at the correct temperature.
On my iMac, LED 1 and 2 light and stay on, while LED 3 does not (except for the first time I tried this, see above). This seems to indicate a problem generating a video signal.
So maybe it's a problem with the video signal, but I think something else is going on too.

The fact that the second LED stays on is actually normal. This what is meant to happen if neither the power supply or one type of motherboard problem have occured. Para 12 of http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908 only provides the results (no light or momentary) that occur if the test provides evidence of a problem with either of them.
As Anthony notes, if LED remains lit constantly then power is reaching the motherboard and the computer is turned on as described in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908 .
Just wanted to make this clear in case other users got worried if they found LED 2 lit.
I agree that http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908 could be made clearer in this respect.
