Some strange display anomalies.

Hi everyone
I have quite a few issues with the display. One is a few dark spots of pixels, I tried to clean the display and they are not gone. The other one is an area of bright pixels at the bottom, only noticeable when that area is bright enough. And also sometimes vertical stripes appear on screen, or sometimes random coloured pixel patterns on screen, upon wake up. These 2 anomalies do not appear to be so frequent that I could reproduce it at any time, but frequent enough to annoy me sometimes. Here are the pics for those -

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Just looking at the first picture, I think you may have the NVIDIA chip problem:

You should be covered by the program.
Good luck!

  • I'm getting some strange displays on my iTunes song list????

When a song changes on iTunes on my computer, but another window is over it, (such as a web page of instant messenger) the place where the window is covering my iTunes play list the words are all jumbled. I've managed to figure out that what is happening is when a page is over my iTunes and the song changes to reposition the playlist, the previous playlist words are copied over the new playlist position. But when I click on 1 or all the songs the words straighten out. This only happens when like on random the song changes from 1 to 98 (or any change that causes the bar on the side to scroll) and only when another window is over iTunes when it happens. It has no affect on the playing of the song, it just looks weird. How do I fix this?
(ps I tried to explain as best I could, but if its still too confusing I can try to re-phrase it)
    Thanks

Install all available updates. Afterwards, reboot, then go back and install more updates. Repeat until there's no updates left to install.

  • I have a Samsung HD TV and I purchased a Mini Display port to HDMI Adapter today. For some strange reason I get no display on my HD tv. I even tried switching a few HDMI cables and nothing popped up. I made sure my computer was updated. Help pls

I have a Samsung HD TV and I purchased a Mini Display port to HDMI Adapter today. For some strange reason I get no display on my HD tv. I even tried switching a few HDMI cables and nothing popped up. I made sure my computer performed all software updates, and I even tried calling Apple Support. They just told me to keep trying different hdmi cables and see if anything pops up. Does anybody know what the problem is? My HDMI cable is from "rocketfish" also my display port is too.

You may have the screen refresh rate set higher than the TV is generally able to track reliably. It may be able to get there most times, but occasionally loses sync because it is out of its nominal range.
I suggest you sit down with the manual for the TV and find out what resolutions at what refresh rates it intends to support through VGA, and make sure your screen settings are near (or below) those limits.

My Photoshop CS 5 has some strange actions when I copy a portion of a photo using the clone stamp  to transfer to another part of the image. It carries the entire layer (not just the stamps selection) across the screen and I cannot place it where I need to. It appears as if I selected the entire layer on purpose (which I did not)
The below items appeared when I opened Photoshop CS 5:
“Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver and has temporarily disabled G & U enhancements. Check the video card malfunctions website for latest software. GPU enhancements can be enabled in the performance panel of preferences.”
(I believe this started after the automatically updated Windows was applied. It was coincident with the before mentioned problem . . . but I don’t really know if it had anything to do with it. )

For the Clone Stamp problem, check the Clone Source panel and Clipped is probably unchecked.
If so, check Clipped and see if that makes a difference.
    (Window>Clone Source)
As to the video card problem:
Which version of windows are you using?
What is the make and model of your graphics card?
Do you know which update windows installed?

  • Strange display problems: lines, missing icons, pieces of windows that stay on screen...

My white 24" iMac has recently started having problems with the display. Because I'm able to capture it with Grab and due to the nature of the problem, it doens't appear to be hardware related. But, not sure. See the screen cap I took below as an example of one of the problems I'm seeing.
I'll try to describe a few other display anomalies I'm having:
Moving a window leaves the background that it was on intact all around the edge of the window, where the drop shadow would be.
The Dock, which is set to be hidden until my cursor moves into that area, will appear sometimes with some of the icons missing, but, the shadows for those icons are visible on the Dock. Or, there are weird lines and patterns around each icon.
While using Safari and a few other apps, I'll frequently get colored lines and patterns that suddenly appear across the screen, and then disappear when my cursor moves over that part of the screen.
When I click on the minimize button, the window uses the Genie effect to move into the Dock, but, often leaves a bit of the window on the screen. It will sometimes clear when I drag another window over the area, or the window I'm dragging will start looking like it does in the screen cap below.
My graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT. I updated the firmware to ROM Revision 3467, but, it didn't seem to make any difference. The only think I can recall doing before this problem happened is I installed the iTunes 10.4.1 update. I'm running OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).
This iMac is about 4.5 years old, so, it's not covered by warranty anymore which means I can't take it to an Apple Store for troubleshooting. I'm hoping someone knows how I can fix this. It just started doing this a week ago. Thanks!
    Tom

    Hi Michelefree,
My iMac does not have a separate video card, so, I was not able to replace it as suggested above. Apparently with the Intel iMacs, or at least the one I have, the video "card" is actually a few chips on the logic board. I was told the only way to fix this is to replace the entire logic board, which is too costly (no longer within warranty).
I did a bit of research and discovered that the problem seems to be related to how hot the computer gets. I noticed this, too. When I started using my iMac first thing in the day, no problems. As the day progressed and the computer heated up, I'd start having all these video problems.
I found a utility called smcFanControl which allows you to speed up the mininim fan speeds inside the computer, which helps keep it cooler. Since I installed this, I've had very few video problems. So, it appears to have "solved" my problem for now.
I wish there was a better solution than this band-aid fix, but, it's a lot cheaper than having the logic board replaced or buying a new iMac, the only choices I was given by Apple. Hope it works for you, too!

  • Firefox 4 -- just downloaded and menu & top bars are in some strange language - not english. I can't seem to get to a tools menu to change the language because I can't read the top menu.

Just downloaded Firefox4 and can't read the top line menu because it's in some strange language with symbols instead of letters. How do I get it to display English in the top line menu?
If I could read the menu, I'd go to tools and see if there were an option to change the menu language, but since I can't read the menu choices, I'd only be pushing meaningless buttons.
    [email protected]

Thanks. I tried it and get the attached screen. I don't see anything which lets me change the language in the menu.
Before I give up completely & just stick with Chrome or IE, I'll bring my laptop which has a correctly configured version of firefox 4 side by side with my desktop & use it as a template for clicking on the correct gibberish lines. I still don't see an option for changing menu bar language, but I'll search around a bit.
It would help if I could get phone contact with someone at Mozilla, but they don't seem to list a phone number on their help page ----

  • '09 MBP with some odd screen anomalies

My MBP has some odd screen anomalies. They appear as small blotches of greyness and can only be seen clearly on a white background and when the backlight is bright. When viewed from a viewing angle almost parallel with the screen, one can clearly see the overall shape. They exist in an almost perfectly round ring around the center of the display with an average diameter of about 2.5 inches. The greyness is thickest on the top half of the ring. There is a distinct spot about half an inch above center and the lower semicircle is filled with random grey dots. It looks like, of all things, the Death Star if looked at straight on, or as if someone used the screen as a cupholder.
It doesn't look like image persistence or dead pixles. The anomaly does not move around or change colors, nor does it appear to get any better or worse with time.
I have no idea where it came from or why...
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!
    /Tycho

do a pram reset http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379  and then try verifying your icc color profiles with colorsync utility (verify and repair) found in your utlities folder in the applications folder.
This sounds hardware related though and you should take it in to an apple specialist. sounds like a ball hit it or someone punched it and the LCD is broken. can you still see it when you turn the screen/computer off?)

They don't appear in the same time but in 1 week.
    Please help me.

    hello italian friend!
the people who sold you the device, upon looking at it and realizing it has a defect, should provide you a replacement one, no need to waste too much time and energy trying to get in touch with Apple! After all, you are under warranty through your contract with your cell phone provider first and foremost!
    Good luck

  • Images in the screen corrupted by some strange lines ...

    Hi,
I have many troubles concerning the display on my MacBookPro. Often, the image on the screen is corrupted by black lines and some strange colour patterns. When I use Tiger on the same machine everything is fine. I agree that with the version 10.5.2 the situation is a bit better tan with the 10.5.1, but anyway, this is not acceptable from Apple. When I disable the Quartz Extreme (via a tool in the developer folder), everything is OK. Hey Apple, how to solve this?
    Best regards, Edo

I think I solved the problem, but this is not good for Apple.
I checked the hardware specification via the "Abour this Mac" ... and I discovered that my graphic card doesn't support the Quartz Extreme!!!! So, why my Leopard configuration is set to support this feature? I have found this link that for the moment, solved my problem
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20040724190553112
I hope that Apple will fix this in the version 10.5.32323
    Regards

  • Display anomalies with new 20" iMac

I've had my new 20" iMac for little over a week now (2.4GHz) and in the last two days the display has started to exhibit some strange behaviour. The best way of describing it would be to compare it to a mobile phone screen that adjusts the display brightness based on ambient lighting. This does not appear to be connected with the Energy Saver setting "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before sleep". It occurs when the system has been on and in use for a little while and seems to settle down after a few minutes. Any ideas?

Having spoken with an apple customer service rep this evening, I was given the choice of repair or replacement of the new system, to which I chose a replacement (the system is two weeks old). However, they were unable to arrange this since there was a "technical fault" on the phone line trying to reach the sales support team while I was on hold (I assume they are outsourcing some call centre work to other countries, at least based on the accents). So I have to call back tomorrow to arrange my replacement. =)

  • Why are some webfonts displaying all jagged?

I am running the latest Muse release and I notice that some webfonts display all jagged on regular screens although they display perfectly clean on Retina displays.
However, some others display just fine on both type of screens (regular and Retina).
As an example, here is the same element using both Forum and Ubuntu fonts. It looks clean in Muse, as it does on Retina displays. But it looks awful on regular displays.
Obviously the former have a much better quality, yet regular screens can display elements such as custom fonts pretty good.
In this example, the first screen shot if from my MacBook Pro Ret Display and the second one from my 27" Thunderbolt Display.
Strangely, the Ubuntu font which I've used on another website, displays just fine on both types of screens. I don't get it.
If anyone has any idea about this, I would very much appreciate it.  Thank you.

    "What are your thoughts Hobson?"
I'd first just like to state for the record that I'm almost completely and utterly convinced that I am not Helen Mirren.
I've noticed a few other similar quirks today at ASC, Cap'n. (Email notifications arriving before the relevant post has started to show in the thread in question ... some recent activity not showing in some communities in "Your Stuff > Communities" and so forth.) So I'm inclined to believe it's more evidence of a low-grade ASC tummy upset of some description.
(Of course, it's also plausible that I might have gone barking mad prior to making this reply. In which case, it would not be prudent to trust my judgment on such matters.)

  • Some Strange Sleep Issues

So, I just got my baby back from Apple (two weeks later!). They replaced the logic board and display assembly.
However, my PD continues to display some strange behavior in regard to sleep/waking up.
Just this morning, upon opening the lid, I got a kernel panic. This afternoon (and has happened prior to repair) upon opening the lid, the screen remains black and the light on the open button remains bright rather than pulsing. Attempts at closing and opening yielded no results. Thus, I was forced to do a hard restart. I don't mind this so much except for the fact that I'm working on a 40pg paper and losing it would cause some embarrassing tears.
So, it appears that all of my issues relate to sleep/waking up.
Any thoughts? As always, any help is most appreciated.
    Cheers!

I am having problems with the Pioneer 106D. Makes me leery of Pioneer now.

My macbook pro is running very slow with some strange mouse and window movements. The trackpad is very unresponsive and when responding the cursor moves on its own and/or very erratically. When on safari the window suddenly zooms in or highlights words and looks them up via dictionary. I currently have a wireless mouse connected and I am still having the same problems.
I fee like I may have a virus or my laptop is perhaps being accessed remotely. All of the sharing options are unchecked.
    HELP PLEASE
    Very worried!!

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

Hello My ipads Power button is not working properly when I press it once it shows option to turn off instead of locking and some other display problems like it suddenly lockes down or display disappears ...Please help. Thank You

    Thanks for that information!
I'm sure I will be calling AppleCare, but the problem is, they charge for the phone calls don't they? Because I don't have money to be spending to be on the phone with a support service.
In other things, it seemed like the only time my MacBook was working was when I had Snow Leopard without the 10.6.8 update download that was supposed to be done to prepare for OS X Lion.
When I look at the information of my HD it says that I have 10.6.8 but that was the install that it claimed to have failed and caused me to restart resulting in all of the repeated problems.
Also, because my computer is currently down, and I've lost all files how would that effect the use of my iPhone? Because if it doesn't get fixed by the time OS 5 is released, how would I be able to upgrade?!

  • Is it normal? Some strange Samsung RAM in my new MacBook....

I have just purchased a new MacBook. I wanted change RAM. I saw some strange powder on the contacts. And the mark of RAMs was SAMSUNG, not Kingston. Is it normal? And the powder, what is it?
