Some Strange Sleep Issues

So, I just got my baby back from Apple (two weeks later!). They replaced the logic board and display assembly.
However, my PD continues to display some strange behavior in regard to sleep/waking up.
Just this morning, upon opening the lid, I got a kernel panic. This afternoon (and has happened prior to repair) upon opening the lid, the screen remains black and the light on the open button remains bright rather than pulsing. Attempts at closing and opening yielded no results. Thus, I was forced to do a hard restart. I don't mind this so much except for the fact that I'm working on a 40pg paper and losing it would cause some embarrassing tears.
So, it appears that all of my issues relate to sleep/waking up.
Any thoughts? As always, any help is most appreciated.
Cheers!

I am having problems with the Pioneer 106D. Makes me leery of Pioneer now.

  • Can't access root share sometimes and some strange performance issues

    Hi :)
I'm sometimes getting error 0x80070043 "The network name cannot be found" when accessing \\dc01 (the root), but can access shares via \\dc01\share.
When I get that error I also didn't get the network drive hosted on that server set via Group Policy, it fails with this error:
The user 'W:' preference item in the 'GPO Name' Group Policy Object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x80070008 Not enough storage is available to process this command.' This error was suppressed.
The client is Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop and file server is 2012 too. On a VMware host.
Then I log off and back on, and no issues.
Maybe related and maybe where the problem is: When I have the issue above and sometimes when I don't (the network drive is added fine) I have some strange performance issues on share/network drive: Word, Excel and PDF files opens very slowly. Offices says
"Contacting \\dc01\share..." for 20-30 sec and then opens. Text files don't have that problem.
I have a DC02 server also 2012 with no issues like like this.
    Any tips how to troubleshoot?

    Hi,
Based on your description, you could access shares on DC via
\\dc01\share. But you couldn’t access shares via \\dc01.
    Please check the
Network Path in the Properties of the shared folders at first. If the network path is
\\dc01\share, you should access the shared folder by using
    \\dc01\share.
    And when you configure
Drive Maps via domain group policy, you should also type the Network Path of the shared folders in the
    Location edit.

  • Very strange sleep issue

This morning when I tried to wake my PB there was no response. Then I noticed the sleep indicator was not lit. I tried the power button and heard the DVD or the HD kick on, the sleep light would come on but no screen. The machine would then go back off. I tried several different things when I heard it go on to wake it, to no avail. I tried to hold down the power button and herd some alarm tone and the sleep light flashed 6 or 7 times only to go back off again. I finally removed the battery and left the power adapter on and powered it on, or off, then removed the power adapter. I was thinking it would reset the PMU??? The magic ticket was slipping in a music cd. I finally saw the os X load screen and she powered up and my time needed to be reset so I assume through the process I did reset the PMU. Since then, everything was working...until I went into apple mail and I got a certificate warning? I can't get it to receive any mail from the gmail server? Any ideas as to what happened. I am up and running, but the certificate issue worries me as well as how or why the machine went wormy. This is the first big issue I have had since I bought it in November. Any thoughts...

    See if this helps:
Your mail server uses a self-signed Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate, you need to import your mail provider's certificate authority (CA) certificate into your X509Anchors keychain using Keychain Access.
To import the CA certificate into your X509Anchors keychain:
Get the CA certificate from your Internet service provider (ISP) or system administrator.
    Open Keychain Access.
Choose File > Import and select the CA certificate.
Choose X509Anchors from the Keychain pop-up menu and click Open.
Enter your password in the Authenticate dialog, if required, and click OK.
You must have permission to administer the computer for this procedure to work.

  • Strange performance issue with 3510/3511 SAM-FS disk cache

    Hi there!
I'm running a small SAM-QFS environment and have some strange performance issue on the disk storage part, which somebody here might be able to explain.
Configuration: one 3510, dual controller, RAID-5 9+1, one hot spare and one disk not configured for whatever reason. The R5 logical drive hosts a 150GB LUN for SAM-QFS metadata (mm in SAM-FS speak) and a 1TB LUN for data (mr in SAM-FS speak). Further, there are two small LUNs (2GB, 100GB) for some other purpose. Those two LUNs have nearly no I/O. All disks are SUN146G. Host connection is 2GBit, multipathing enabled and working.
Then the disk cache became too small, and the customer added a 3511 expansion unit with SUN300G disks. One logical drive is a RAID-1, 1+1, used for NetBackup catalog. The other is a RAID-5, 8+1, providing two LUNs: 260GB SAM-FS metadata (mm) and 1.999TB SAM-FS data (mr).
For SAM-FS, the LUNs form two file systems: one "residing" in the 3510, the other "residing" in the 3511 expansion. Cabling is according to the manual and checked several times by several independant people. Operating system is Solaris 10, hardware is a V880.
The problem we observe: SAM-FS I/O on LUNs on disks inside the 3510 is fine. With iostat, I see 100MB/s read and 50MB/s write at the same time. On the SAM-FS file system which is running on the two LUNs in the 3511, the limit seems to be at 40MB/s read/write. Both SAM-FS file systems are configured the same in regards of block size.
In case I have activity on both SAM-FS file systems, I see 100MB/s+ on the LUN running inside the controller shelf and another 40MB/s on the disk runnin in the 3511 expansion chassis. So, the controller is easily capable of handling 150MB/s.
Cache settings in the 3510 controller are default I think (wasn't installed by me), batteries are fine.
Is this 40MB/s we experience a limitation by the expansion shelf? Don't think so. Anybody has any ideas on this? What parameters to check or to change? Any hint appreciated. I can also provide further details if needed. Thank you.
    wolfgang

SUN300G disks sound like 300GB FC disks.
Depending on how many files are in the SAMFS file system, sharing the mm and mr devices on the same RAID array can be a pretty horrible idea. In my opinion and experience, it's almost always better to NEVER put more than one LUN on a RAID array. Period. Putting more than one LUN on an array results in IO contention on that array. And large, unnaturally configured (9+1? Why?) RAID arrays will have problems from the start.
What are the block sizes used on the RAID arrays? It wouldn't surprise me to see that the RAID array on the expansion tray has a very large block size. Larger block sizes are, in general, not better. Especially for SAMFS metadata - which IIRC is something like 8k or 16k blocks.
I suspect what is happening is most of the metadata updates are going to the mm device on the new array, contending with the IO operations on the file data.
How much space is left on each mm device? What does "iostat -sndxz 2" show when you're having the IO problems?

  • More sleep issues

My Macbook (Mid-2008 white model) is having some serious sleep issues. I've been reading several posts about this topic and haven't seen any that replicate my problem.
When opening the lid to wake from sleep, I will get about two second glimpse of my desktop and dock, and then the screen will go black and it will go back to sleep. I am sure it went back to sleep because the front light will start snoring (pulsating) again. After this, I can't get it to wake up again unless I plug it in or do a hard restart. This started happening a few days ago after a system update. It has not had this problem before, so I am wondering if 10.5.8 has these issues.
    Help!!!!

Try resetting your SMC and PRAM.

  • Strange power issues

I am having some strange power issues with my six week old Macbook. The symptoms are as follows (I apologise in advance for the length of this post) :
    1) If the battery charge is below 50%, and you connect the magsafe charger prior to power-on, the charge light will illuminate until the grey boot screen comes up. Then the charge light turns of completely & the Macbook boots up using battery power. If I disconnect the magsafe connector, followed by the mains and reconnect in the reverse sequence, the light turns green momentarily and then orange (as it should for charging)
    2) If I start the coconutBattery application after booting into OSX, while the charge is still below 50%, the same issue occurs again with the magsafe. It appears to happen at the exact time the application queries the battery. I can get the charger working if I follow the same disconnect/mains/reconnect sequence.
    3) The issues above also seems to occur when the battery updater checks the battery. The Macbook does not recognise that the charger is plugged in.
    4) If the charge is above 50%, then all works as expected. The coconutBattery application does not affect the charger. The Macbook works as normal.
I have tested with a brand new magsafe & a new battery - symptoms are identical. I have noticed several other non-consistent issues - the flashing green light/orange light on the magsafe connection, unusual battery life calculations (70+ hours).
I have performed calibrations & reset the PMU and the PRAM, and have all current updates. And I have spent a large amount of time in the forums looking at similar issues without much success. I am beginning to suspect the logic board (DC chip) is at fault, however I dont relish the idea of dropping my new Macbook at my local Apple Repair centre & getting it back three weeks later with the same issue.
My current cycles (on this new battery) are at 2 with a full charge capacity of 5142 mAh.
My questions to the community are:
Does anyone have a similar experience with these types of symptoms?
Or can someone illustrate on what would cause the Macbook to believe that the magsafe was disconnected? Whatever internal system call the coconutBattery application uses to recover details from the battery appears to trigger this behavior.
I would appreciate any thoughts on this one.
    Macbook Core 2 Duo - 2GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Just another observation, based on reading some of Apple's documentation regarding the AC charger:
"If the adapter works after this 60-second "rest," you most likely have a line noise issue with your power source that will require you to reset the adapter (by repeating this moment of rest) periodically. This happens when the AC adapter's over voltage protection feature senses ground noise and then turns off the adapter."
Could a sudden draw of power required at a 50% and below charge trip this over voltage protection feature? I know the charging draw varies based on current battery level.
I have tested this in UPS protected boards with the same result.

  • Sleep issues and strange message in console

    Hi all,
For the last month or so, the only way to sleep my Mac Pro is via the apple menu, it won´t sleep automatically as programmed by system preferences. I have read other posts, and the only solution seems to be the use of PleaseSleep, right?
I also have this console message every time I wake the computer or display from sleep: "loginwindow[48]: in pamsmauthenticate(): Failed to determine Kerberos principal name"
Does anybody know if this could be related to the sleep issues?
    Thanks in advance

    Hello:
Your English is excellent...far better than some who claim it is their mother tongue
My answer was a bit flippant, sorry
I looked at my own logs after reading your last post.  I note all sorts of incomprehensible (to me) messages - some indicating errors.  I have no clue what the sandbox messages indicate.
The other problems could be caused by a number of things - including hardware problems.
You might try resetting the PRAM and SMC.  Those are not cure alls, but they cannot hurt anything either.

  • Weird USB / sleep issue; what can I do?

This is an ongoing issue that has been popping up since at least as far back as 2012, possibly further. It never made sense, and I've slowly pieced together some strange occurrences that might shed some light on the problem.
Back in the Fall of 2012, I copied some data onto a USB thumb-drive from my laptop, then a 15-inch MacBook Pro (I bought it used, I think it was 2006 or 2007 vintage). There was a large amount of data transferred. The copying process took about half and hour. I took the thumb drive to a friend with a much newer computer. My friend told me the transfer took a few minutes. I knew something was wrong then. The MacBook Pro was running MacOS 10.6.8.
The MacBook Pro died March, 2013. I was able to hire a specialist to extract the internal hard disk from the laptop, put it in a USB case, and transfer the contents verbatim to a newer machine; I had to buy a refurbished late-2012 iMac. running MacOS 10.8. (Now runs 10.9)
I have noticed peculiar behavior in running this iMac. USB thumb drives and other USB hard drive transfers can occasionally seem sluggish. Weirder still, if I put the iMac to sleep overnight, waking it up in the morning causes a very strange "wake up" process where the display is greyed out and a progress bar lets me know it is slowly waking up. This wake-up process takes one to two minutes. This only happens when there are no USB peripherals connected to the iMac. If I put the iMac to sleep with a thumb drive plugged in, it wakes up instantly.
I have long suspected the iMac had some kind of software bug or corruption that was brought over from the MacBook Pro in March of '13, when I hastily transferred everything over in the midst of the laptop's breakdown crisis.
Recently, I ran Software Update on the iMac to get Epson and Security updates installed. I repeatedly was greeted by the warning message: "System extension cannot be used  The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update." I have no idea what this means, but it does seem to confirm that there's some weird bug loose and it has to do with USB.
The only question is: what can I do about it? Would calling AppleCare for advice help?
I am my own "Chief Cook and Bottle Washer", in that I do my own I.T. most of the time. I've been using Macintoshes since 1986.

    Hi Walt_Atwood,
I'm sorry to hear you have been dealing with this issue for so long. If you are getting error or alert messages about a deep system file (like a System .kext), you may want to try reinstalling your OS. This should not affect your files or user settings (as noted in the following article), but just to be safe it is alway a good idea to have a backup of your data prior to these kinds of troubleshooting steps.
OS X Mavericks: Reinstall OS X
OS X Mavericks: Back up your Mac
OS X Mavericks: Alternatives for backing up your Mac
Also, regarding the unusual wake up process that you noted, from your description it sounds like your machine is waking from Safe Sleep. This may be normal for your model (Late 2012 iMac) if it has been asleep for more than 4 hours and there has been no USB activity:

  • Power/sleep issues after upgrading to 10.8.5

    mac mini
    2.6 GHz intel core i7
    512 SSD
    16 GB RAM
everything was working beautifully for quite a long time, in fact, i've never had any issues at all.  upgraded to 10.8.5 build 12F37 last night and now the computer won't wake from sleep.  it has to be forced off and then restarted in order to get it to "come back".
reset the PRAM and the SMC, i'm hoping that resolves the issue, but i'd love to hear if anyone else is having the same issue and how they solved it.
    thanks!

Also it happens without the MBOX 2 connected, which is USB audio interface by the way, and with just a Seagate external USB 3 Drive connected, which I use for backing up and has worked fine without these sleep issues up to 10.8.4.
So it is like this...you put the computer to sleep, it goes to sleep, external drive spins off, after a few seconds external drive spins on again for no reason, display stays in sleep, but not rest of the system, as when you wake up a good indication to see whether it has woken up from deep sleep or just display sleep is that if you had wifi on and connected, when it wakes up now it is always connected to wifi, whereas when normally the imac wakes up from deep sleep the wifi connection(just the connection not the wifi interface) is off and is looking for it and connecting to it after you have woken it up. Something totally going wrong with the power management since 10.8.5, no doubt. Ι initially had installed 108.5 from the software update window, done the combo update on top now, and still no change in this behaviour. Strange that it let's me install the 10.8.5 combo, as before, if you had installed the update, it would not let you do it again...Not sure about what this is...
I had different but still sleep issues with an imac late 2009 i7 27inch, after a certain update in Snow Leopard, where again I had done the update through the software update window, instead of downloading the combo one...back then it was that it wouldn't actually go to deep sleep, just display sleep.
It is so frustrating that this happens. The biggest issue is that if you leave the computer supposedly at this sleep for a long time it does not wake up from the mouse or elsewhere...!!!!
And another update, removing the Seagate MyBackup(USB 3) or whatever it is called, putting the computer to sleep, and waking up, it does actually behave as it should, it wakes up and the wifi is looking for the connection and connects after a few seconds, it is not connected as when you have a USB device connected(the MBOX 2 or the Seagate external USB 3 drive in my case) which it seems wakes up the computer from deep sleep(which means it is on and the wifi connects in the background)immediately after a few moments you put it to sleep(observation is that MBOX keeps on going on and off sleep as led's go off and on at regular intervals and the same seems to happen with the external drive....).
The cure...in Snow Leopard with the sleep problems after an update, was to re-install leopard and do the combo update, meaning re-installing the whole system, which is quite a pain in the back side. I hope this is not the case in Mountain Lion otherwise we should be compensated for Apple ruining our system and organisation. The only cure I see for the minute and I am not sure if it will work is to revert to an earlier Time-Machine Backup which was made when the system was still in 10.8.4. And if this works, I will not do the 10.8.5 stnadalone or combo update until Apple start becoming serious with us, and not mess with our work and computers which they sold to us as the perfect machines...
On another note my 27" i7 2012 imac had also these backlight uniformity problems, where part of the screen is slightly darker(on the right hand side, nothing major but noticeable as the same colour has a different hue in the brighetr area of the screen) so I am quite fed up with this drop in QC at Apple, not only in hardware but in software...I am currently waiting for a replacement, but this is nothing to do with this update.
I seriously hope that they release 10.8.6 soon and that it will solve these issues which people who installed 10.8.5 already are experiencing. In fact even their suggestion, if it will be one, let's see, for people to consider going to an earlier backup where the system worked fine(what I am considering to do now), will be unreasonable and undermine their ability to create problem free updates and software which affect basic functions of the system such as sleep, and they will have no excuse, as it is not us who did something wrong to our system, it is their update which they fed to our systems through their software update, and let's say as the ordinary mac user thought it would be good to do...so there is an element of fooling people there as well...What if someone just bought their mac recently and did not have a backup but had already set up(customised) their system to a signinicant degree before the 10.8.5 update? I believe that we should be covered and compensated for such things, as I have lost time and money dealing with these issues in the past.
Don't they properly test these updates, with all their fleet of different mac models, testing them with general peripherals connected to them, that people normally use, such as USB DEVICES, Audio Interfaces, External USB Drives? Come on they make billions for god's sake. We're spending 2 grand on a system that is touted as heaven on earth and it does many things brilliantly, but does fail on some, and what I really get is all these ridiculous issues every now and then which make me lose time and money, as I just want to have a system that sleeps and wakes properly!!!!!!! I AM NOT HAPPY, and it is Apple's Programmers which messed it up for me again...No bonuses this month please.

  • Mac book pro 10.5.7 sleep issue..... not even sydney genius bar can help me

ok hey guys, this is my first ever post on a support forum so please help me out!
I'll give any specific hardware info if needed later on but this is the basics:
i have had my mbp for over a year and 6months into it my mbp started going into sleep mode for no reason ...and no im not simple the energy settings are set to never sleep so its not that. Since then i have tried and tested everything under the sun to resolve the issue i have been to the genius bar and booked it in several times, each time they tell me they can not find any problem. I have had the logic board replaced - i have tried removing the p.list files, resetting pram thingy the battery test thing....everything...i have looked on endless forums for a resolution but nothing works!, it will go to sleep at random times generally when im doing alot of things on it it can run fine for days maybe sometime weeks but then its starts playing up again. When it does sleep the screen goes blank and the power light pulses but worst it cuts the internet connection which is terrible coz i have a time capsule and it cuts that link as well and messes that up entirely! sometimes it will just keep cutting out every 20-40 seconds untill i wake it by tapping the space bar or moving my mouse sometimes it just shuts down completely - i have done a compete erase & reinstall but ill b honest i still reinstalled some programs from my backups that cant be downloaded anymore (isquint etc) coz the genius guys said maybe a program is corrupting the hardware but if anyone has any ANY ideas or has the same problem please! tell me - im sure i could add more info n stuff but if u want 2 ask me specifics then i will answer anything to help
    thanx again guys.
i should say at this point the only relief im getting to stop it from sleeping is if i disconnect the power adapter and use the battery that seems to stop it, but it has crashed(slept) on battery power as well but as of today doing this seems to help ....hasn't crashed since writting this! LOL

Has anyone got any assumptions on suspect software that may cause my problem??
I see that louie has a possible response for you. I had forgotten about that problem.
lastfm, transmission or handbrake. Can anyone confim issues after installing these apps?
if not these softwares then im convinced im dealing with a power issue.
I would be doubtful (although not completely dismissive) of anything like these being the source of your problem.
the genius bar has said it may b an enviromental issue. this also may be the case, tho not so much recently. They said perhaps magnectic fields may cause it 2 go 2 sleep and its true moving my MBP around does seem to settle it for instance if i move it out of my room im yet to see any of my sleep issues occur
The movement sensor might be involved, as also louie's excellent suggestion of the temp sensor. It is difficult to know how to test these effectively and might need more tools than the GB can muster.
But i dont live in a electricity tower and i did move my MBP to the other side of my room where it worked for a good month - and then started again with the sparatic sleeping.
It is hard to disprove a negative. The only way to bring some sort of evidence to the table if there were some such interference would be to use the computer for an extended period away from where you are using it now. If it works without problem in (say) Starbucks or some other neutral area, and then fails within a few minutes of returning to your home, then there is something stronger to work with. Then you can start to track down some external source, I would guess.
So i will try a safe start as graham had suggetsed as this seems as a simple enough fix - but i do run a time capsule, ext 1TB HD, Wireless mouse etc ..which i presume will not work in safe mode .... and is the idea to just keep safe mode on untill it does crash again or will just starting up on safe mode then restarting solve the issue?
Time Machine ought to work in Safe Mode; and I would not suggest working that way for a lengthy period of time: just to start it up perhaps to clear something that is interfering. But what you write here is of interest: (A) The HD -- what is it (brand, etc, and how formatted) and how connected; plus the wireless mouse? What brand is that (and I presume you mean Bluetooth)?
As for A weak diode..I dunno what that is or how 2 check it
Right. I couldn't either, and most shops won't: they would just replace the board. There is a shop here . . . but that is too far for you.
i think the battery is ok ..as i said it performs better at this point when i disconnect the power...but not always... i had a terrible day yesterday when it would keep going to sleep everytime i reconnected the power, if i try 2 persist it will keep going back 2 sleep ever 30 seconds untill i eaither just leave it be for a while or untill it just turns off completely!
That suggests, as I mentioned earlier, something awry with the battery/power combination; especially if the performance is not consistent. A battery should deteriorate gradually, not come and go.
If it does turn off when i turn it back on it wont even get to the grey apple logo it just keeps turning off after 2-5 seconds (turning off not sleeping)
so im at a loss why that is!
No power. You have to wait a while until the power level is brought up to a workable level.
The power cord seems fine all the pins spring out - the middle spring is smaller than the others tho.
    Mine too. That seems OK.
Do post those logs. Someone might see the answer.

  • Strange Database issues while trying to create new user through EM...

I'm attempting to configure my local Oracle 11g database in order to create a Content Server user in order to setup a Fatwire installation. I'm getting some strange issues with my database that I was hoping maybe someone could help me out with.
The guide I'm following starts with this:
+1. Determine the Console Server port:+
    a. Open the emoms.properties file in a text editor. The file is located in:
    +<ora_home>/<servername>_<SID>/sysman/config/+
    b. Find the line,
    oracle.sysman.emSDK.svlt.ConsoleServerPort
and make a record of the port number value at the end of the line.
When I open the emoms.properties file in Notepad++, I'm unable to read the contents - it's all symbols/jibberish.
    The next step says this:
+2. Log in to the Oracle Enterprise Manager console:+
    a. Execute the following command: emctl status dbconsole
When I execute that command I get the following error:
Environment variable ORACLE_UNQNAME not defined. Please set ORACLE_UNQNAME to database unique name.
    The third step says this:
Open a browser and go to the URL highlighted in bold in step a above. If you see
a “Security Mismatch” error, ignore it (the error appears if you are using a selfsigned
    certificate).
I skipped to this step because I'm assuming the link it wants me to go to is my EM console (https://localhost:1158/em/console/aboutApplication), however when I browse to that URL I get the following error:
    503 Service Unavailable
Service is not initialized correctly. Verify that the repository connection information provided is correct.
Clearly, something isn't right here. What's going on? Any help would be appreciated.

  • 24" iMac intel--Sleep issues--simple as widgets

Had major sleep issue with brand new new gorgeous 24" intel 2.8 imac. It wouldn't autosleep no matter what I did--reset PRAM, SMU, archive and install, checked console logs, etc. After some common sense thought, I figured it might be a really simple thing. So, I turned off three of the animated widgets (the aquarium, the CPU monitor, and the beach scene). I tried each one individually, and any one of the three had sufficient CPU activity to prevent sleep. After deleting the three of them, everything was fine, and it now sleeps like a baby.

My pleasure--one of the dead giveaways was that my Macbook Pro 15 Core duo had the same apps and files, but she lacked some of the widgets, and it slept perfectly from day one. This is my 5th Mac, and I know that some third party applications are often more damaging than they are positive. Widgets are not necessarily tested for compatibility with the system files of all models.

  • Odd iMac sleep issues

I first noticed the issues a couple of weeks ago - mid-2007 iMac, running SL.
The iMac will sleep fine if I use the command in the apple menu or the power button.
But it won't sleep automatically as suggested in the Energy Saving preference pane. If I select the 'sleep' keyboard combination (option, command, eject), the iMac sleeps but instantly wakes again.
I've tried everything! These problems aren't due to peripherals - it was working fine with the same peripherals connected. Wake for LAN isn't selected, nor is the wake for BT option (and I don't have any BT devices). I've looked in Activity Monitor and Console and can't find any obvious process that might be keeing the Mac awake. I've tried restoring plists from a TM backup, deleting plists, resetting the PRAM and SMC.  One of these measures (not sure which one) worked ONCE. But when I went into the energy saving preference pane, it stopped sleeping automatically again.
My main concern is the lack of auto-sleep. I've scoured the forums and no one seems to have this problem together with the mac waking instantly after the sleep keyboard combo. I'm hoping this peculiar combination of probems might shed some light on what's causing them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can be very hard to impossible to track down auto sleep issues. Just get PleaseSleep.

  • Re: strange browser issue

so, since this isn't actually my site, and just a site i'm
    trying to
view, it sounds like there's probably nothing i can do about
    it.
i see that Alan suggested it may be my version of Firefox
    that isn't
handling the compressed data format, but i'm having the same
    problem in
IE. the only browser on my computer that i can view that site
    in is Safari.
but here's a new development: it occurred to me to see if i
    can visit a
different page on the site, so i open it in Safari, browsed
    to a
different page and copied the address, then pasted it into
    Firefox. i
can see this page just fine! but if click through the site,
    it appears
as though the only pages i can see are the pages in the
    alphabetical
list of artists, and then i can see the artist and song pages
    if i click
on those. if i click on artists, albums, or lyrics links, i
    get the same
    blank page. very odd.
should i just contact the administrator for the site and tell
    them about
    the problem?
it's not my website, so i'm not going to worry about it
    anymore. i was
just concerned that there was a problem with my computer, but
    that
doesn't appear to be the case. or, if it is, nobody knows
    what the
problem is! oh well. it's just one site. i'll worry about it
    more if it
happens with more sites than this one.
    thanks for all the input!

Hi there, thanks for your response. I'm in Firefox, but note the links I sent will work because the object/embed tag has been shrunk. If I were to modify the size to 1014x740 it wont work, the Allow button would be unclickable.  Take a look here: http://tinyurl.com/2756pye I've setup a version that is broken for you to test with. Note that I've included wmode="window" and still having the same issue.

  • Sleep Issues with g5 Imac

I have a g5 iMac running OsX Panther. 1.6 Ghz with 256 Ram.
Anyways, the computer randomly and frequently goes to sleep. The hot corners are not set for that, infact in the settings i've set it to never go to sleep. Some days, like in the last hour, the computer will go to sleep, i wake it up, and within a minute, it goes back to sleep. Some days it wont go to sleep at all. The problem seems to be truely random. The only programs running are Entourage, Safari and Adium, sometimes Itunes and Filemaker.
Has anyone heard of a problem like this before? Any tips or trouble shooting ideas?
    Thanks.

First read Apple doc.#25801 on sleep settings.
A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
    WAKE UP
In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
    FILE CORRUPTION
Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
    ENERGY SAVER
If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--(username is your name or System Administrators name).
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
Some, in these forums, have had luck fixing sleep issues downloading the Combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
Yours could be the 10.3.9 Combo update (you did'nt say what version you are using). Others reading, download the combo update that applies to you!
    Cheers!
