Some system sounds stop playing. Alternatives to fix-by-reboot?

I have noticed that at some random point Leopard (10.5.5) stops playing certain system sounds. These sounds include e.g. thrash can emptying / dropping, sticky keys sounds etc. They don't include however all sounds like the beep that you hear when you alter the volume.
From activity monitor one can see that coreaudiod is taking up some % from cpu. After killing the coreaudiod the system sounds returned immediately (coreaudiod is restarted right away).
Previously I have been fixing this with reboot (which obviously work), but I hope this helps somebody to get back their lost system sounds without the need for reboot.

Do you have any 3rd party audio apps such as AirFoil or WireTap installed?
If you open the Audio MIDI setup and under Audio devices, Default Output, if you see some SoundFlower or other listings, that is usually the problem.
If you only have "built-in output" then the problem lies elsewhere.

after updating my ipad 1 to ios 5.11 the sound on my ipad sometimes stops suddenly. it happens during video playback, music listening or just text typing on keyboard.

Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.

[SOLVED][KDE4]Only system sounds will play

I'm not sure if this belongs here or in the DE section, so please move it if you see fit.
I'm having a bit of a tricky issue with KDE, all the system sounds will play, but nothing else. I'm currently using the gstreamer phonon backend with ALSA. I've seen some forum posts from the gentoo wiki with similar problems but it seems it was just a mixed mess of deleting .folders and other configuration files. I've also tried to use the VLC phonon backend but to no avail either. I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem and has a coherent solution.
So far I've tested playing audio files in VLC and videos on youtube. My alsa device is fully configured and will play audio, just not output from programs that are not part of the plasma environment. I have also looked to the wiki for a solution but it only seems like it has solutions for audio conflict problems, which is all sorted out for me.

i recently had a gstreamer issue that i solved today as well. run a pacman -Ss gstreamer0.10 to see which packages you have installed. you might need to install the gstreamer0.10-plugins group of packages, as i did.
this might be completely different from what i went through, since i'm not using phonon or kde, but it's worth a shot. worst case scenario is you uninstall the extra packages afterwards.
another option to try (which didn't help me, but was a solution for SOMEONE i found through my searches) was to compile and reinstall a fresh version of the gstreamer0.10 package. abs makes it so simple to do, it's also worth trying.

Some system sounds have disappeared

I just retreived my MacBook Pro from the customer services, where the Logic Board has been changed.
I noticed that some system sounds are not performed anymore.
For example, after completing a download from the Internet the "download folder" on the dock used to "pop". Now the icon jumps but no sound is played.
How can I manage sounds and assigned actions?

Do you have any 3rd party audio apps such as AirFoil or WireTap installed?
If you open the Audio MIDI setup and under Audio devices, Default Output, if you see some SoundFlower or other listings, that is usually the problem.

Sounds stop playing when user locks screen on iOS with AIR 3.9 Beta

We built a simple application that should play sounds when in background and when the screen is locked.
Since we updated to the latest AIR 3.9 Beta SDK, all sounds stop playing when the user locks the screen on iOS.
The sounds resume when the screen is unlocked.
- it works on Android
- we use renderMode : cpu
- we use UIBackgroundModes : audio
- we use NativeApplication.nativeApplication.systemIdleMode=SystemIdleMode.KEEP_AWAKE;
- sounds play when the app is in background
- was working great with AIR 3.8 SDK
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why do some YouTube videos stop playing after a short time?

Since sometime in October, 2013, I have noticed that more and more YouTube videos stop playing within a minute of starting. Most that stop do so in 15 or 16 seconds. The playing stops because the download stops. I watch this on a network activity monitor I always have running. Not all videos do this, but the problem is becoming more and more frequent. Some videos which played correctly for me in the recent past are now exhibiting this problem.
Other than installing the latest Firefox updates I have NOT changed the software on my machine. I run Linux by the way. I do not think this is a Linux problem because (1) it was all working before and (2) my son who runs both Mac OS X *and* Windows is also seeing the same problem. We both use Firefox as our browser on all our platforms.
I should also note that I am NOT seeing this problem with any of the other video websites I use, only when I go to YouTube. That leads me to believe that the problem is not in Firefox; if it were it should affect videos from all websites.
Additionally the problem occurs whether or not I log into YouTube.
I have not run Firefox in safe mode because all the extensions I use did not affect the download of Videos before, so I don't expect unchanged extensions to suddenly start causing problems.
So, anyone else see this problem? (There was another note which talked about the same problem but it was disabled.)
Also -- pardon my paranoia, but -- I need to ask: Since YouTube is owned by Google and Google has its own browser it wants you to use, Chrome, is it possible that Google is intentionally causing some YouTube videos to fail if it sees that they are being sent to Firefox?
(That is not so outlandish I think. Microsoft WAS at one point caught mangling web pages going to certain web browsers other than IE. And these days Google wants to dominate the Internet just as badly as Microsoft does, so why not pull dirty tricks too?)
If this keeps happening I am going to have to try Google's Chrome to see if it somehow manages to play YouTube videos correctly while Firefox does not. But I really do NOT want to install Chrome because I trust Google about as much as I trust Microsoft, which is to say Not At All.

There have been some issues with Flash 11 in the recent past. This could be a manifestation of that issue. Kindly check this response below to see if this helps you in viewing Flash videos.
Also, if you want to check if this is a flash problem and specifically on youtube, you can try the HTML5 version of Youtube. In this, there are no plugins involved, and the browser natively renders the videos. You can signup for the HTML5 trial by visiting http://youtube.com/html5. Please try that and check if the issue goes away.
Also, in this case, Google might not be doing anything sinister - they generally try to be standards compliant too. You can definitely try installing Google Chrome and test this issue, but we definitely would want you to continue to be a Firefox user :)

Recent crashes of certain multimedia contents (this includes Youtube videos, certain flash games and other applications) in conjunction with Firefox are most probably caused by a recent Flash update and/or a malfunctioning browser plugin such as Real Player.

System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.

Videos stop playing, restarting browser fixes

I believe my Macbook AIr with Lion pre-installed, has had this problem from Day 1 ... After I've had my browser open for awhile, say a day or two, video playback stops working. Mainly youtube, or something embedded in facebook. I can follow the link to the video, but once it starts playing (I can hear the sound as normal), the video just goes white. If I just re-start the browser, it starts working again. I am using Google Chrome.
I called AppleCare and some idiot told me that the problem was I had too many browser tabs open and I shouldn't expect things to keep working normally. Which I do, typically 7 windows with 10-20 tabs in each.

Thank you so much! It does fix the problem (which is even more confusing, cause as far as I know it's usually the other way round- people have trouble loading hd videos) at this point I'll just take what I can get : D I'm just really curious why is this all happening....

Suddenly all sound stop playing

Hello.
I have a problem with the sound.
The latest install was the pulse audio (before i had just alsa) so to use it with skype because i couldn't use microphone and speakers .
So after a reboot there is no sound at all.
In alsamixer master channel is full.
Also in pavucontrol when i play a video from youtube the "progress-like" bar in output devices works (fills up with blue color).
So although the master seems to be full and working, no sound is coming out.
Any hint is welcome.

I think I was playing around with bluetooth and broke it, but that may be a coincidence.
Like you, pavucontrol sound meter works.
Everything is unmuted.
For me, my system is an xps14. It has "smart" switch when headphones plugged in, quite a poor system, but it does allow 3 or 4 pole headphones (for inline mic) on the 1 jack.
I cannot generater any sound.

Aspire E1-522 sound stopped playing through the speakers?

Hi All, I have an Aspire E1-522 laptop, refurbished. yesterday the sounds from the speakers just stopeed. i can play sounds through the headphone jack just not the built in speakers them selves. I have factory reset and updated any drivers but not luck so far. Any tips or advice would be great. I use it for when im in hopital, it also has no warranty left so im stuck their. Please help me

Since you already did a factory reset, i think it's an hardware issue instead of software.the only solution is to go to a computer shop and have a check about this issue.

Multiple Apps don't play any sound, Sound stopped playing on audible

Doodle Jump and my Audible Application don't play any sounds and I don't know why. Started happening after I donwloaded skype. I've since deleted the Skype app and it didn't make a difference. The phone rings, and the buttons click when I type, the mute toggle switch isn't flipped, text messages play the alerts I have set.
My thoughts are it's the way the game handles sound output. Haven't tried to play anything on itunes yet to test if its only limited to the audible content playing through the audible app, and the game. Any suggestions?

I'm encountering same problem with iPhone 4, specifically in Skype, Audible, but even iTunes is not outputting sound at times. Restarting iPhone helps. Not ideal though.

Sound stops playing after a few seconds

Hey all. I juz transferred a song to my iPod. The song plays for 16 seconds and then it juz automatically skips to the next song!! It's frustrating. The song played juz fine on iTunes and WMP though. Any solutions guys?

I'm having the same problem many times over! I have about 250 songs on my IPod Nano and about 25-30 of them do this. They start to play and about 10-15 seconds into the song, they skip to the next one. A few of the songs even get almost to the end and then skip. Its VERY frustrating. I have reset, restored, and even re-formatted the IPod to no avail. It happens with songs purchased from ITunes as well as songs I've imported from CD's. The songs play just fine on the computer, just not on the IPod. If someone can help with this I would really appreciate it!!

System sound (like when empty trash) miserably stop working in Lion 10.7.2

I have upgraded to Lion10.7.2 on my Macbook Pro early 2008 Intel 15 inches, and the update went fine except one annoying problem I found so far.
This problem also occurred in 10.7.0 and 10.7.1 and it seems that no fix has been made in 10.7.2
The problem is when I drag file to Trash and empty it, there should be trash empty sound effect, and this has been with us since Tiger.
In 10.7.2 it work as expected, but when I close the lid to get it to sleep, once I open the lid, the system sound is gone without no reason.
When I play music from iTunes, or when I change volume level, the sound effects work as usual, but empty trash sound stop working miserable.
I have to shut down, press Option-Command-P-R and power on to reset PRAM then system sound like empty trash come back. Again, afpr may be half a day, it's gone again
Any friend here has solution for this? The com.apple.soundprefs.plist file, if you delete it, in Lion, it is not recreated again, and it's gone forever. SO delete plist file is not a solution.
Help please

I found a workaround to my problem accidentally.
As the system sound like empty trash or file drag sound stop working miserably, after close the MBP lid to sleep, after it awake, system sound just stop working.
Before this, I have to shut down my MBP, reset PRAM by press Option-Control-P-R and power on, to get the system sound back
But I found that the workaround whenever the system sound stop working thad do not require reboot is:
1. Go to System Preference-Sound
2. Change Play sound effects through: Internal Speakers to Soundflower 2ch) in the drop down list.
(Soundflower has been installed by a software called iShowU HD (screen capturing software))
3. Slide to change Alert Volume from the original position
4. Switch back to Internal Speakers from Soundflower 92ch) in the drop down list
5. Change Alert Volume by moving slide bar back to the desirable position
Immediately, the sound effects that stop working will start working again.
This just work for my case. I don't know it will work for ther people that have the same problem as me or not.
And if possible, can some expert here give me explanation why doing the above make system sound effect to work again? mI want to know the cause, and definite solution to the problem
Advise and suggestion please. Thank in advance
