Some text in Safari appears as fractions instead of readable text

On some web pages certain blocks of text appear as numerical fractions. When I go to the same web page in another browser, such as Camino, the text appears as it should. I have tried to change the font in Safari's preferences, but nothing seems to fix it. This seems to be a fairly recent problem happening on all our Macs and it seems to have started since we upgraded to OS X 10.4, or maybe even after one of the recent updates. Any help resolving this annoyance would be appreciated.

actually, these machines are all running Suitcase to manage fonts, so I eliminated Helvetica Fractions from any of the suitcases and it resolved the issue. It's curious the problem only showed up in Safari and not Camaro, but I've learned not to question things once they are working properly!!

Elements default format appear as blocks instead of inline text

I am creating an EDD and I have some issues with the way FrameMaker breaks each element instead of leaving it inline. This wouldn't be a problem if I was allowed to format children instead of elements; then I could fix the problems I am having.
Short question is, is there a way to tell FrameMaker to open unformatted elements inline instead of as blocks?
For instance, I have acronym elements within the text that wrap the definition and then wrap the term. When formatting it, it must show up as text and then the acronym after it with parentheses around it. I was able to make that happen by using run-ins, but the acronym element itself is no longer a part of the para. It is broken down to its own paragraph.
Example: <para>Reference will be made to the <acronym><def>Air Force</def><term>AF</term></acronym> serial number.</para>
should look like this:
Reference will be made to the Air Force (AF) serial number.
but instead looks like this:
Reference will be made to the
Air Force (AF) serial number.
because I can't edit the EDD to have any para element with an acronym within it to format as a run-in.

If you have solved the problem, fine; but let me clarify a few things:
Example: <para>Reference will be made to the <acronym><def>Air Force</def><term>AF</term></acronym> serial number.</para>
I also have <acronym> as a text range and it does not appear inline; it is still blocked as a paragraph.
The FrameMaker EDD rules assume every element is to be formatted as a paragraph unless you tell it otherwise. Giving the acronym element text range formatting (inline) is not enough; you must also set def and term elements to be text range. This is a little bit of a guess on my part, because I have never tried putting paragraph-formatted elements inside a text-range-formatted element.
Regarding the children without parents, the parent is there in the structure view but when typing down through the page view to make sure paragraph tags were placed correctly, some don't appear.
This is still not clear; every element (except the document root element) must have a parent; othewise, the structure is invalid. You see the parent in the structure view, so the parent IS there.
Not every element has to have a paragraph tag associated with it. The typical examples are elements that serve no formatting purpose but simply contain other elements. For example, suppose you have a chapter that has several sections. Each section may have a title element and several paragraph elements. The title element and the paragraph elements are formatted as paragraphs, each with a paragraph tag (if the EDD assigns paragraph tags). The containing section element does not have a paragraph tag; it simply contains the title and paragraph elements.
NOTE that the EDD can assign formatting without assigning a paragraph tag. Maybe this is the cause of your concern. If your EDD is doing this, then some elements will not have tags, even thought the formatting is correct. {CAVEAT: My EDD assigns a default format list to the root element in a document. Except for a very few elements, all formatting is done as overrides to the default tag. In my case, each element displays the same tag, the default tag. I am not sure what happens when NO tag is assigned as the default.}}
I haven't even begun to grasp how I'm going to work out building the
LEP, TOC, LOI, LOT, and Indices yet. I know the build can be done
manually, because I've done it and have templates for that already
(although they are about ten years old).
You likely need not do these lists manually. In a structured document or book, you can create these lists either as lists of paragraph tags (as one does in unstructured documents) or as lists of elements (for example, an LOT is a list of Table elements, if Table is the name of your table element). The elements in the list need not have paragraph tags in the document; typically they do not. See the FrameMaker user manual for details.

Have been trying to get to the root cause of the problem but did not find much on this. I am trying to figure out what can get the warning to go away completely than using the Allow/Always Allow options for the plug-in

Thank you for your response. Here is the screenshot of the warning that I am talking about.
Here is what I do:
1. Launch Safari and open its Preferences. I have Safari 7.1 installed on my machine.
2. Click Security Tab and click Manage WebSite Settings
3. A window opens showing me all the Plug-ins that I have (listed on the left hand side).
4. One of them is the Adobe Reader plug-in. When I click Adobe Reader, the following details about the plug-in show up on the right
I was referring to the highlighted section that warns me about this plug-in not using the highest level of security for Safari Plug-ins.
Note: I do not see this for all my plug-ins (QuickTime, Adobe Flash Player don't give me this warning) which tells me that there is a way to make the warning go away.

I fixed the issue. It was related to the DEP settings on my windows machine.

But once again, I do not want to lose my other texts, app progress, and photos. I could sync the photos but i would still lose the app progress and texts. I would only restore if it was the only option left, but the other space, as already stated, isnt the main concern. The main concern is those 'deleted' texts. If they go, then a good size chunk of the other space goes. I know you CAN delete texts for good. It worked fine before. All i want to know is why its not working for me now, and how to fix it.
I also know that when you delete texts on your iphone, they get marked for deletion, however they stay on your device (thats why they show up when you search for them.) then when you sync your device with itunes, the texts marked for deletion should disappear. When i synced they didnt disappear. Thats what i need an explanation/solution for. Why the texts marked for deletion didnt get fully deleted after the sync.

Some GIFs and JPGs appearing with yellow "wash" when loading in Safari

I've flicked through forums, google, and called my top graphics people but nobody can seem to help, or has ever even heard of, my issue.
Here it is in a nutshell:
Some GIFs and JPGs appear with a yellow "wash" when being loaded in Safari. I can confirm this is happening on 3 different Macs, and even on a PC running Safari.
Safari 3.1.1 on Windows XP
Safari 3.1.2 on Mac OSX 10.5.5
Here's some examples of it occurring:

You might need to refresh the page in Safari a couple of times to see the flicker but it's there.
I've tried:
- resaving images with and without "progressive" and "interlaced"
- a variety of different colour palettes
- taking a screenshot of the image, putting back into Photoshop and resaving
Has anybody seen this issue before? Unfortunately I can't go live with this site until I fix this very strange error.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

Totally independently from your current problem, Safari is cr@p. Dump it.
All Apple applications, from the Finder through Preview and iPhoto to Safari, assign Monitor RGB to ALL untagged images, even if they were created or saved in sRGB.
The only current properly color-managed web browser is Firefox 3.0.1. Just keep in mind that you have to enable color management deep inside the guts of Firefox.

Vertical line appearing on some pages in Safari 6 (rMBP)

I've had my MacBook Pro with retina display (OS 10.8.2) for less than 24 hours and noticed vertical black lines appearing on some pages in Safari 6. I pulled a page up in Firefox and the lines did not show up so it must be a Safari issue. Does anyone else notice this? And is there a fix?

Same here. Not sure if it happens with other programms as well, but I see it reguarly with safari. Could this be a safari (software) problem, or should I return my mac (still in warranty)?
Problem is, it happens every now and then, but not often enough (for now) to reproduce the issue on a apple help desk counter....

Text boxes not appearing - CAPTIVATE1.1

I have a number of delegates using Cap1.1 - on some machines
when recording screens, the automatic text boxes are not appearing
when the recording has finished. (the "text box" option is checked
on all PCs in the custom options settings)
I`m sure i`ve heard this could be something to do with Flash
players - I checked one of the machines that is facing the issue
and its using Flash 9.

Sorry, I only keep the current version and one version back
due to storage limitations. I would note that there are few things
more difficult than to suggest a correction for an "intermittent"
problem, but I'd have to say an intermittent problem
on a version that was replaced years ago would definitely
qualify as the most difficult of all.
That said, maybe we can offer some help if we knew what the
problem was. You don't really say, except that some text-captions
on some machines are not appearing. That is not really helpful in
troubleshooting.
What is being recorded - exactly?
Where is it being recorded from - Internet, local drive,
etc.?
What are the delegates (what's a delegate?) doing at the time
they expect, but are not getting, automatically-generated
text-captions?
I am relatively certain that the problem (if I understand
that part), has nothing at all to do with the Flash Player version
installed, but beyond that, I'm sorry that all I can offer is
questions instead of answers.

Some device fonts not appearing under 11.0.1.152

I have several swfs published for FP 10 & 10.1 which have been working fine under FP 10.3.182.10 in both Safari and Firefox.
The swfs have code that displays a device font ("_sans") for certain languages, such as Greek, Russian etc. After upgrading to 11.0.1.152 some of the device font text is not appearing. I say some as it stills appears correctly in some places but not everywhere.
I have re-installed 10.3.182.10 and it works perfectly again in both browsers.
In case this problem was related just to the browser plug in I also installed the standalone player for 11.0.1.152 (Flash Player Debugger) and ran the swf from my desktop by double clicking it. Once again the fonts stopped displaying correctly.
If I run Test Movie from within Flash Professional, the text appears correctly as I have installed 10.3.182.10 as the version under "Players" in the Flash Professional installation folder.
Can anybody shed any light on what is going on here?

I think I have been able to replicate the issue.
My swf has some dynamic text under a mask which by default is set to display as Arial. By changing a Boolean variable to true, I set the text field to use a new TextFormat which has a font property "_sans".
Here is the complete code:

I can also see the same issue when viewing the swf in the standalone versions of the player.

Garbled text in Safari after installing Lion

After installing Lion, Safari now displays many pages with what appears to be missing font, garbled text. Many sites I've visted in the past (including my bank) just have "AAAAAAAA" wherever there's supposed to be text.
My first thought is either missing font or font clash. I never had this under Snow Leopard. Any ideas?

There are two problems that leads to this.
Mismatching permissions
Corrupted cache entry's
First you should try to clear the safari cache.
To do so, click on the Safari menu bar at Safari and choose there empty cache.
If that does not solve the garbled fonts, perform a permission repair on your system disk, using the Disk Utility.
Before doing that, close ALL running applications.
Ignore upcoming messages like "could not repair on file XY" while performing permission repair, cause this will happen as you perform the task on a running system and opened files can not get changed.
If the problem persits, report back here.
I recommend to perform anyway a permission repair after every major update, cause during the update process, very often file permissions get crumbled. This will also solve some other issues after system upgrades.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Some fonts in Safari not working

After updating to Safari 3.1, I noticed that some fonts in Safari now display as Helvetica fractions. However, when I use Firefox to view the same Web page, they display fine. I am using Suitcase Fusion 12.1.6 and manage Local Fonts. Some of the local fonts do not appear in the preview pane and say they are missing. I have located them and tried to add them (repaired first, all fonts do not need repair) but Suitcase will crash each time I locate the font.
Also, I noticed in Firefox that it is using the same fonts for the default set as Safari. Times & Courier. Yet these fonts aren't missing in Suitcase, so I am not sure what is happening here.

I am using Suitcase Fusion 12.1.6
12.1.7 is the current version. You should probably update.
but Suitcase will crash each time I locate the font.
Either the font is bad, or Suitcase's database is bad. That it tells you local fonts are missing points more towards a problem with Suitcase.
To reset Suitcase, close the application. It will give you a minor warning about available fonts. Click Quit. If you are NOT using Suitcase's vault, in your user account, go to ~/Library/Application Support/Extensis/Suitcase/ and delete the file:
Suitcase Font Database.suitcasevault
In the Preferences folder of your user account, delete the file:
com.extensis.SuitcaseFusion.plist
Relaunch Suitcase. You will need to reset any preferences in the program that you have changed from the defaults. You will also lose any sets you've created.
If you ARE using the vault, following the above steps will cause you to lose all fonts you've added to the vault. If you have backups of all of your fonts, this is no big deal. Otherwise, be forewarned that they will be gone. What you can do is move the database file to the desktop. Then if the problem with Suitcase continues, you've likely eliminated its database as the problem. Then you can quit the app again and move your original database back into the ~/Library/Application Support/Extensis/Suitcase/ folder.
please tell me if I nuke my font caches, how will it affect Suitcase Fusion.
It won't do anything to Suitcase. It doesn't even create them. For the most part, OS X builds your font cache files. If you remove them, the OS will rebuild them when you restart.

Apple Safari Appears extremely strange in Windows XP... No apparent fix?

Apple Safari Appears extremely strange in Windows XP... I have an AMD XP processor and a Radeon 9550 graphics card and safari appears like its been scrambled. I'd post a picture if I knew how, but basically instead of its proper appearance pages and the header bar are black with messed up type and lines etc. going through them. I can't even read the menus at the top of the window. Nothing is clearly readable in most cases. I can't seem to find a reason for it, and I've downloaded the most recent copy. Anyone have a clue? It's not Safari, it's something that's going on with your Windows installation and graphics rendering; perhaps some corrupted files, bad registry entries.
You should use a utility to check/repair your disk, then try it again. If it's still wacky, then I'd uninstall it and try reinstalling it.
