Some unusual () characters in messages i send when received by others

i occasionally get my own emails returned to me littered with characters (little diamonds with question marks, in case this doesn't post!).
i think this is how they're arriving at the recipient's end ( i.e. the characters are there in the email they receive, they're not 'made' when they click reply)
i think they're most frequently seen in a returned signature for some reason, though they do appear in the body text also so the following paragraph may not be terribly relevant ...
i've been through the process of saving my signature as plain text and converting back to .rtf before pasting it into the signature in the Mail.app preferences - what i call a sort of 'footbath' procedure - to no avail. the funny thing is that it's far from every email. i can't see a pattern to their appearance - they always replace a <space> but sometimes it's the second of two in a row, sometimes it's one on its own, sometimes preceding a link, +etc. etc.+
i send my messages in Rich Text format in Helvetica 11. the signature is also in Helvetica 11 (with some colour and bold elements). there is an embedded .gif as well. 'Always match my default message font' is not selected
anyone seen this? know how to help?

thanks.
(it isn't helvetica nueue actually but it can't hurt to try another) any particular sans-serif font you know of that has less problems reported? shame not to be able to use helvetica (who doesn't like helvetica?).
can't say i understand the header question completely but i can investigate - do you mean the header of my outgoing email or the incoming reply?

I have 2phones on my apple id account. since setting up ios6 yesterday and icloud i have discovered that if i send or receive messages to other iphones those messages appear on both phones. how can i alter this

This is the intent of having multiple devices connected to the same icloud account - they are all kept in sync.  If you don't want certain features kept in sync, then turn off the services on one device (Settings>icloud), but there is no option of that for messages.

  • I deleted some of my text message histories to get rid of 'other' space (6.33 gb). They were gone from iMessage, but they still showed up in search, so they were still taking up space on my phone. I synced my iPhone (4s) but the messages are still there.

I deleted some of my text message histories to get rid of 'other' space (6.33 gb). They were gone from iMessage, but they still showed up in search, so they were still taking up space on my phone. I synced my iPhone (4s) with iTunes but the messages are still there. How can I get rid of these texts for good and have more space on my phone? 6.33 gb of other space is way too much, thats almost half of my overall available space (13.5 gb.) I don't want to reset my phone and lose all my other texts/ app progress/ photos. I do have backups, but when I restore from the backup the other space comes back along with everything else. What can I do to get rid of this other space and the 'deleted' text messages? (I'm running iOS 6.1.3 if that helps)

But once again, I do not want to lose my other texts, app progress, and photos. I could sync the photos but i would still lose the app progress and texts. I would only restore if it was the only option left, but the other space, as already stated, isnt the main concern. The main concern is those 'deleted' texts. If they go, then a good size chunk of the other space goes. I know you CAN delete texts for good. It worked fine before. All i want to know is why its not working for me now, and how to fix it.
I also know that when you delete texts on your iphone, they get marked for deletion, however they stay on your device (thats why they show up when you search for them.) then when you sync your device with itunes, the texts marked for deletion should disappear. When i synced they didnt disappear. Thats what i need an explanation/solution for. Why the texts marked for deletion didnt get fully deleted after the sync.

There is a huge difference between sending email and sending messages.
Yes, I believe you when you say you can only send messages to other Apple products.  The iPad is not a telephone, and therefore, it cannot text message.  It can only iMessage, which means it can send and receive messages to/from other Apple products if they are on WiFi or an iMessage capable cellular network.
Email, however, is a whole different category.  I don't really think you can only exchange email with other Apple products only.  Make sure you have correctly identified the symptoms.

This happens when you both use the same Apple ID for iMessage.  You can continue to share the same ID for pruchasing from the iTunes & App stores, but you should be using a different ID for iMessage.  To fix this you have two choices:
On one of the phones go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with a different ID (so you are both using a different ID for iMessage); or
On both phones go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and uncheck the email address(es) shown under "You can be reached by iMessage at".  Also uncheck anyone else's phone number, if present.

  • I have an issue with some PDF documents   some MS Office documents, notably MS Word when received in eMail as attachments not displaying on iPhones, iPad 2s

    Hi,
I have an issue with some PDF documents & some MS Office documents, notably MS Word when received in eMail as attachments not displaying properly on iPhones, iPad 2s & new iPads?
PDF docs - areas of the doc only show as grey splotches regardles of viewer
    MS Word Docs -
inserted graphics don't display at all,
tables & lists especially with borders are broken &
tables & lists missing the borders &
tables & lists missing the 1st 1-2 lines of the lists/tables.
This is replicated on iPhone 4s, iPhone 4Ss, iPad 2s, iPad new (x2)
It certainly happens in iOS 5.1.1 & iOS 5.1
We believe it all worked aok in iOS 5.0.1(?) & prior
There is no problems reading/seeing these PDF & Word docs on anything other than iDevices.
This is rather critical for us & if not quickly fixed/rectified will prevent us from further purchases of these devices
Rolling back to iOS 5.0.1 or prior I believe isn't possible because of the BaseBand update(?) & isn't much of an option because of the quite noticeable Battery/Charging/WiFi improvements in 5.1 & 5.1.1

    Hi,
I logged a call with AppleCare & have since had explained why this occurs (some time ago)
I'll try to explain what was indicated to me.
iOS has a limited Font Set & this affects what PDFs can display. You need to use iOS supported fonts in your PDFs to see/read them properly
These supported fonts are indicated here => http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4980
Regards MS office docs, iOS doesn't have much of an API to work with MS Office documents at all so is stuck with 3rd Party Apps to try to do it.
Unfortunately Mail in/on iOS uses the API to attempt to open/use MS Office attachments unless you tell it to use an App to open the attachment.
I have had success opening & reading MS office docs now with CloudOn, but find it slow & very awkward to use.
Not too sure if this helps others, but at least it explains why this is occurring

  • I am getting a "not delivered" when I try to send a photo from my Ipad or iPhone via iMessage. I can receive photos in iMessage and I can send and receive photos other than with iMessage. I have tried restoring factory settings etc but no luck.

I am getting a "not delivered" when I try to send a photo from my Ipad or iPhone via iMessage. I can receive photos in iMessage and I can send and receive photos other than with iMessage. I have tried restoring factory settings etc but no luck. Is anyone else having this problem please?

I've been having this problem too, but here's the catch: originally it was only with my dad, and only sometimes.  Now it's dad and husband, every time!  Pix go through, via imessage, to everyone else, and they go through to dad/husband if I "send as text" after it fails.
And the other annoying thing- the blue bar will run all the way, and it will say "delivered".  So I close out of imessage. When I reopen it again, the "delivered" has changed to "not delivered" with the red exclamation point.  I just googled "imessage not sending photos" and founds TONS of people with the same problem, but no solutions.  (I have rebooted phone, reset network settings, with no luck.  I even had to backup/delete/restore my whole phone the other day for a different reason, and hoped that would fix it, but now it won't send to my dad OR my husband (who is on not just the same carrier, but the same family plan as me)

  • Can we display only email address on the sender when receive external incoming mails

    Hello ALL Experts,
Organization want to see only email addresses in the FROM field when receive External incoming emails from Any domains.
I know for Sending emails out to the External domain we can control it in exchange with the help of Use Simple Display Name attribute.
So want the same to the managed for external incoming emails as well, if possible with the help of Transport rule or some custom scripts
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
Based on my knowledge, we can use simple display name as an external display name for outgoing messages, but I'm afraid there is no way to do this for incoming mails.

  • Mail messages stripped of text when received by others

I have been having problems with Apple mail for about a year now.  On occasion I have been called by my boss informing me that I have sent out emails with just attachments and no message.  Problem is, I sent a message with the email but the text was stripped for some reason.  I have the program set to bcc a message to myself so that I can see what I am sending out and can retreive it from the server if anything goes wrong.  These messages are fine.
Is mail encoding the message so that it is unreadable by Entourage or Outlook?  That is the program that at least one of the recipients is using.
Does anyone know what could be going on?

Sort of. Outlook is a crappy email client unless it is sending and receiving to/from itself. It even has trouble with Microsoft's own products like Entourage, Outlook for Mac and Outlook Express (Windows version).
Depending on the version of Outlook and the Exchange server that is hosting it, various problems will occur.
If you are sending to a known bad version, use Plain text and set the attachments to always at end.  Another thing noted as helpful is setting the attachment to view as icon (right-click on it and choose view as icon).
Changing the font at the beginning of the message is known to work sometimes. Recently, some people have found that adding an empty plain text document as an attachment helps with some versions of Outlook.
Despite that fact that Outlook does not conform to email standards, Apple has tried to keep up with the various idiosyncrasies in Outlook, but Microsoft tends to stay one step ahead with new bugs.

  • Rich Text Mail not format when received by others

Am new to Mac and mail. Have set my mail accounts up ok and am sending formatted mail (rich mail, change font to arial and changed colour). However, when it is received by other computers (non-mac!!) the mail format is times roman and colour is black.

  • Sending offline messages, automatically send when connection established?

Hi there,  I am new to the iPhone.  On other phones I could compose an sms or other message offline, and it would be queued & sent when a connection was reestablished.  The iPhone currently doesn't let me hit the send button while offline and if it does it quickly rejects the message and waits for me to resubmit when a connection is established.
    How do I change this?
I am outside of cell service quite a bit, and need to be able to compose messages and have them sent whenever a signal is found.
    Thanks for your help!

You can't change this, that is how it works I'm afraid.

  • HT1688 problem with some of my text messages going to another phone and other devices on my account

Some messages that are texted to my phone go directly to another phone(with a different number) on my account.

More than likely someone sent you an iMessage addressed to your Apple ID email address that is also registered with iMessage on your iPhone in addition to your cell phone number. The cell phone number is registered with the Apple ID email address when activating iMessage on an iPhone.
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive.
Under You Can Be Reached By iMessage At, deselect your Apple ID email address.
Under Start New Conversations From, make sure your cell phone number is selected.

  • Group Messages not sending or receiving

Since the beginning of this week, I've started to have an issue with Skype, in a group chat only. I send a message, and the small spinning circle appears at the side, and continues indefinitely. However, when I send individual messages I can send the message through to them one to one. Just never in the group chat, I've searched through the site here and found suggestions. I uploaded and revised to the most recent version of Skype 6.20.0.104 and still have the same issue. Any help will be appreciated, Thank you.

Having somebody add me to a new group that they created didn't work (I never saw messages from the group, or even that the group was created).  And creating a totally new account is unacceptable on many levels, not the least of which is that I regularly communicate with 100s of contacts
I'm also on a Mac (google search led me to this thread and resolution) so it's really likely to be some sort of issue with the Skype protocols rather than an OS platform problem.

  • IMessage does not send when receiver is not online

I am trying to send an iMessage to another iPhone (version 5.0.1) that is not online (not on 3G) at this moment. I have used iMessage to this person before when that iPhone was on wifi. In my settings I have "send as sms/text" turned on. So I am expecting that the message is going via the cellular sms/text, but the receiver does not get anything (using another phone works well so the receiver can receive sms/text messages).
What could be the problem here? Thanks to all for helping me out here.

Hi Allan, thanks for taking the time to help.
Let me explain a little bit further. My sons iPhone does not have a dataplan, only call/sms plan. I use iMessage with him when he is on a wifi at home or at school.
But now he is not on wifi and I want to sms/text him. My wife with an Android can SMS him fine. He can SMS me as well but my SMS does not get delivered. So he has cellular reception.
With "send as SMS" turned on in settings, I would expect my message to be transfered via SMS. The send button is still blue, suggesting iMessage is still used and not green (which would suggest SMS).
    Thanks for the help!
