  • Some basic questions from a mac newbie

    hi,
i have been using linux and windows all this while, and recently began using an apple too. have some simple questions here that i hope to get some answers for.
    1. is there something similar to /etc/hosts in linux where i can add the IP address of a server? this is for me to use the 'ssh' command in the terminal
    2. when i open up an application, say safari or chrome, i want the window to fill the entire screen automatically, instead of having to drag the bottom right of the window to fill the screen. how to configure that?
    3. when i close an application by clicking on the 'x' at the top left, why is it that it still appears in the list when i press command+tab? to remove the application from the list, i have to right click on its icon on the dock, then click 'quit'. this is rather troublesome.
    appreciate any help!

    1. is there something similar to /etc/hosts in linux where i can add the IP address of a server? this is for me to use the 'ssh' command in the terminal
The /etc/hosts file is there, but the /etc/ folder is hidden. You can use the Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities/) to access it via Unix, or could enter "open /etc" in the Terminal to open that folder in the Finder.
However, I'm not sure how this relates to ssh... I have not needed to modify that file, yet I can ssh all I need to. Are you trying to connect to your new Mac via ssh, or connect to other machines from the Mac via ssh?
    2. when i open up an application, say safari or chrome, i want the window to fill the entire screen automatically, instead of having to drag the bottom right of the window to fill the screen. how to configure that?
Just drag the window out to full-screen and the browser should remember and open new windows at that size in the future. There are also some utilities (one called "Right Zoom" IIRC?) that will make the zoom button (green + button) behave more like the Windows zoom button.
    3. when i close an application by clicking on the 'x' at the top left, why is it that it still appears in the list when i press command+tab?
Applications shouldn't quit just because you close their last window, unless the application's entire user interface is contained within that window. That is the case with ALL Windows apps, since there's no global menu bar, but only in some Mac apps. This is something that always ticked me off big-time with Windows... there have been times when I carelessly closed a window I didn't need anymore, but wanted to keep using the app, and then had to wait for it to load again. That won't happen on the Mac.
If this bothers you, just use the key combination command-Q to quit apps.

  • Some dumb questions from a MAC Virgin

Firstly let me thank you for help you are going to give me.
I have thought for many years about switching to a MAC from my PC.
At the moment I a wireless network comprising my desktop (which is the one I would like to replace with a MAC system) and downstairs a Sony Vaio laptop. I use a Netgear Router and for the upstairs computer a usb wireless dongle to connect to my network.
    First question.
    1. If I buy a mac desktop and set it up upstairs how do I connect it to my wireless network? Is it possible? Is it easy? Will it just find it as my PC does and allow me to gain access via my WEP key?
    Second Question.
I maintain daily two websites. I know the FTP access won't be an issue as far as I can see but what software is available for web design and maintenance - doesn't need to be fancy I can code HTML by hand.
    Third Question.
My printer is connected to my desktop upstairs assuming I can access and maintain a wireless connection will my printer work with the laptop?

    1. Yes, yes and yes.
    2. Lots can be found at versiontracker.com and macupdate.com
    3. If there are Mac drivers for your printer, yes it will work. To setup, see this page:

  • Questions from a debian user

    Hi All,
I'd like to give Arch a try on an older laptop.  Just some basic questions from a debian user:
    1)  I'd like to use xfce.  I had trouble finding exactly what to download.  Is there a boot-only.iso?  I'd like to install the minimum and pull the rest off of the Web.
    2)  I'm using the debian  testing release and enjoy its balance between stability and newer software.  It also keeps me sharp and climbing up the learning curve.  Should I try Arch's testing  release?
    3)  That's about it.  I'll learn the rest once I have it up and running.

  • HT201272 I have recently picked up an Apple TV. When I go to the movies tab, there are less movies available there than there are in my i-Tunes account. I've done some looking around at questions from others, but haven't found an answer that works for me.

I have recently picked up an Apple TV. When I go to the movies tab, there less movies available there than what is available in my i-Tunes library. I have 38 movies showing in my library but only 23 are showing in the Movies tab on the Apple TV. After researching this a little, there are only 23 movies showing under Purchased in the Quicklinks of my i-Tunes account. The majority of my collection are digital copy downloads that came from DVD purchases. Some of the missing movies were added in the past couple of months, the rest are a year-or-so old. I have done some looking around at questions from others, but I have not found an answer that will fix my situation. How do I update my library to get ALL of my movies to reflect that they were "Purchased"(as it says they were in their Properties)?

The pros and cons of to CC or not to CC have been done to death
Its a fact the CC model will work for some, especially newbies and small businesses.
The risks associated with the CC model have been well documented.
For long term users of CS perpetuals its generally a large hike up in cost compared to the upgrade system.
Then there are the....... Adobe can rot it hell...... group who will never subscribe
To each their own, you do the math to suit your cashflow whatever that is and then make an informed decision
To those on the CC model, I'd like to offer some practical advice.........do not allow automatic updates.........make regular backups............develop an exit strategy of alternatives for when you can no longer afford the subscription costs............never ever assume that the Adobe update is bug free
    Enjoy your cloud

Thank you for that post, and the advice. I just happen to be one of those who it does work for. I've been around long enough to know that CC isn't going to work for everyone(the large publishing/radio/web company I work for isn't upgrading to CC because of the costs involved). But it does for me as I potentially venture out into the full-time freelancing world and away from the more structured big office environment. I can't make decisions based on what is best for anyone else, or what will hurt or help Adobe. Just what affects me, and that's all.

  • Hi there.....some questions from a new musician (on this forum that is)

    Hey!
New guy here......37 year old Swede, living in Los Angeles since 1988......guitar player since age 12. Pretty new to the whole computer recording thing, now working in GB3 and have Logic Express.......Some quick questions.......
A decent audio interface?.......Right now Im running through a Line 6 POD XT PRO (the rack mounted version) It works great, for recording guitars (real) and bass and such, but recently aquired a Roland PC-200 MK midi controller, and the POD does not recognize other midi devices...? (understandably, as it is a guitar thingamagig)
All my buddies do Pro tools, and was thinking maybe going the way of that......I understand the M-box works with garageband and Logic, albeit not SO good as let's say a Presonus Inspire or Firebox......What to do?
Still debating wheter going with Protools or Logic? Positives, negatives please......
I heard that ProTools is more live recording, versus Logic is more MIDI friendly.......? Understanfably you can do EVERYTHING you can do on Pro tools on Logic, I guess the difference is, if youre working with it (I am not) then perhaps if time is an issue, you choose one or the other depending on what works best.......
I sit home, record, Time is plentiful, but do plan on recording a CD (solo material) mostly guitars, bass, midi drums and keyboard and vocals......
Anybody with any input, suggestions etc.... will be greatly appreciated.....
    I'm glad to be here!
    Stefan

    Welcome to the forum Stefan.
You are pretty much right on about Logic vs Pro Tools. Logic is mainly a MIDI sequencer (and the best one at that!) with added audio recording capabilities, while Pro Tools is mainly an audio recording DAW with some MIDI capabilities (I hear that Pro Tools 7 is pretty darn good with MIDI, but haven't tried it).
Regarding the interface, what's your budget? If you have the money and are very serious about recording, I would suggest getting the Apogee Rosetta 800 (or 400). If money is tighter than that (as in my case) I would go for the Presonus Firepod. Best in it's price range by many accounts. If that's too many inputs for your needs, then I would suggest it's little brother, the Presonus Firebox.
You'll also want to check into getting some decent monitors (speakers). All this stuff is useless without something to listen to. And they need to be accurate.
    Good luck,
    X

  • Why can't I post a question from my new system?

    Hello All:
I was just trying to post a question from my new mbp but it wouldn't allow me to do anything.  It continually gave me a message highlighted in 'red' that i was;t allowed to modify or post anything.  I've been asking questions for quite a while and have never seen this.  I also happen to have my older bmp, also logged onto the 'Apple Discussions' site, open beside me.  Can anyone explain this to me please?  BTW, my new system obviously has Yosemite on it while my older bmp has Lion.  Thanks in advance, to all those who respond.
    Regards,

ChitlinsCC, I'm adding your reloaders to my article on how to make using ASC easier.
Here is my ASC work flow...
    1) I login.
    2) Block the automatic 30 minute logout.
Unless you do something every thirty minutes you get logged out.  The forum software waits to tell you this as long as it can to keep you in suspense  ;-) . Filling out a reply is the exception to the thirty minute window.
            Start an auto reloader.
    Safari = SafariTabReloader
Firefox = ReloadEvery: "Reload web pages automatically"
Others = Reloaders | Cerberus - Support Center
You need to pick a page that will reload over time without stalling out. It's ASC.  I've found my profile display the best to use. I get my Profile page after some  logins.  It's ASC.  Change rccharles to your apple id.
    https://discussions.apple.com/people/rccharles?view=discussions
    Reply technique
Open a new browser window.  Pick some discussion.  Open a reply window.  As long as this reply window is open, you will stay logged in.  The 30 minute times is reset as needed by the ASC software.
    3) I open another window to do my normal ASC browsing.
    4) I have a FireFox bookmark to goto the discussions that I have participated in. I've modified it to add on the content stuff.
turingtest2 recommends. Change rccharles to your apple id:
    https://discussions.apple.com/people/rccharles/content?filterID=participated~obj ecttype~objecttype%5Bthread%5D
    5) Use turingtest2's generated links with the /content suffix as browser bookmark to the ASC discussions:
Site map of Communities and Categories
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2463
    6) Adjust the ASC web page layout.
    For FireFox
I run with Hiroto's modification to user content.  This is the only way these forums are readable for me.  How to adjust the format and layout of ASC Web Pages:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-7501
    For Safari
"ASCPowerTools is a Safari Extension designed to give more control"
    http://www.etresoft.com/ascpowertools
    7) Read and answer my old posts.  I kind of memorize the time I last posted. ( It's way bad that apple eliminated the last poster to a thread. )
    8) I use tabbed browsering.  From a list of discussions, hold down the command key then click on the link. You get two tabs this way. The original window will keep where you have been.

  • Pro Tools convert to Logic Newbie some simple question for logic users

Hey guys, I am a recent convert from Pro Tools! and There were just some simple questions I thought some of you may be able to help me out with. I am using Logic 9.1.1
    1) After I set up a multi timbral software instrument (in this case MOTU Symphonic Library) how do I set up midi channels to trigger the individual sounds in the instrument. (in pro tools I used to create a midi track then send an output of that track to that particular soft synth)
    2) How do I set up a and forgive my Pro Tools vocab but basically I want to set up a reverb channel on an aux track have it receive on a bus so I can send other tracks to that particular bus.
Thanks for the insight and really looking forward to finally make use of all this ram! lol

    1) I have a nord stage and would like record via midi. In pro tools i would usually need to create a midi track with the output set the the nord and an audo aux track to hear it What would I do in order to record midi from my nord stage?
To record, just select a non-audio track, hit record and play the keyboard. The notes will get recorded into a region.
If you want to play it back to the Nord Stage as well, then it makes sense to set the Nord up as a MIDI device in your templates, so you can just add the Nord to a track and not worry about what MIDI ports it's on etc. Open the environment, create a New -> Instrument, called it "Nord Stage", set the MIDI port and MIDI channels it's on, and sav your template.
Now, when you start a song, to sequence the Nord, you just assign the Nord instrument to a track (by for instance, right clicking on a track and choosing your Nord instrument from the list of environment obects that appears).
    2) The multi instrument trick is quick and easy its great but How would I do that manually?
Lots of ways, look into your key commands, ther are all kinds of "Create track with same instrument", "Create track with next MIDI channel" and so on. There are too many ways to do this to quickly talk about here. In short, all tracks have an environment object assigned to them, whether it's an audio object, or a MIDI instrument object, and this determines where the data on the track goes.
    3) How do you set up midi so that it doen'ts overwrite notes when recording over them?
Not sure I understand you here...

  • Some applications question

i using iphone 4s and upgrade IOS7 last night, today i happen to open some of my games apps, such as injustice, infinity blade, infinity blade 2, asphalt 7, asphalt 8, blood and glory Legend, etc. all of my apps able to load at my current gameplay status except blood and glory legend which this game start from stratch, everything i have in this game just gone! I did backup my iphone to itunes before upgrade to IOS7 and now i planning restore back from itunes.
    However i faced several problem,
    1) i unable to restore this particular blood & glory legend game from itunes, as i know itunes can only perform full restore.
    2) When i wanted to restore from itunes, it mention my iphone not enough space. Is it this mean i need to delete everything in my iphone and than only can check restore?
    3) What worries me is that after i fully restore from itunes, some of my apps will be start from zero.(example, the game i mention above, before restore only bllod and glory legend save file gone, but after restore from itunes maybe infinity blade 2 save file gone)
As i didn't perform 'restore from itunes' before, i worry it will affect my games save files. i almost perform full backup every night. Could anyone tell me what should i do? Thanks for reading(sorry for poor english).
Last thing, usually restore from itunes will take how long?

  • Thinking of Going From Yosemite BACK to Mavericks!

    Greetings All-
First of all, I'd just like to thank this community for being the most helpful group of professionals one could ever turn to in times of distress or need.
I have spent hours of time seeking to find why my wifes 15" MBP - which we upgraded to Yosemite, has been nothing but trouble ever since. The infamous "Spinning Colored Wheel" is a hourly sight along with a freezing system, and extremely slow processing! I have sought out everything I possible scenario and also backed it up in case I found something that erases all cache, cookies, etc OR brings me back to using Mavericks!
Looked into the typical Anti Virus / Malware software and if truly required, what settings to put MBP on for safer surfing & operation and to be honest I don't really know if I should be using the Mac Firewall and FileVault (or what Security settings should be ON vs OFF)
On my trusty 17" workhorse I stayed on with the 10.9.5 OS and have no issues of the sort thankfully. I also really didnt like the new layout of Yosemite while using hers but just cannot put a finger on what it is I don't like. My question is - are there any members who had troubles like these or simply didnt care for it and chose to return to Mavericks? And better yet - HOW easily can one convert their OS Backwards to a previous one too?
Thanks for any advice on these topics and hopefully I can solve her matters!

First, reverting to an earlier Mac OS X from Yosemite is not difficult if you have a TimeMachine backup of the system:OS X Yosemite: Revert to a previous OS X version  If not, things get messier because you have to erase the hard drive and reinstall the Mac OS X version and then reinstall all of the applications.  Data will be lost unless you make a backup on an external drive before starting the erase process.  If her MBP came with Mavericks installed at the factory, you can restart holding the Command+Option+R keys (this takes a good internet connection) which puts you on the Apple servers.  Then use Disk Utility to erase the hard drive and then Install Mac OS X to get Mavericks back.  After that the issues are your applications and other data.
As to her slow performance, you can check what is running in the background pretty simply by getting a copy of etrecheck, from etresoft.com, it is free, and that will show all processes that are running and you can look for obvious culprits like MacKeeper, Anti-Virus software, cleaning software - the usual bad actors.   Latest version is: http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
I have had no issues with the latest Yosemite running on an Early 2011 15" MBP, but I have a lot of memory and that usually makes a big differences.

So I have a problem with iTunes not letting me download anything without first responding to some security questions which I don't remember setting up, how can fix it? Oh, and it won't let me reset the questions either!

If you mean that you aren't getting the reset link, then from the page that you posted from :
Note: The option to send an email to reset your security questions and answers will not be available if a rescue email address is not provided. You will need to contact iTunes Store support in order to do so.
You can contact iTunes Support in your country via this page : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
When they've been reset you can then use the steps half-way down the HT5312 page that you posted from to add a rescue email address for potential future use

  • Some basic questions on File Adapter

    Hello all,
I have some basic questions on XI and File Adapter and hope you can help me. Any answer is appreciated.
    1. Can I use NFS transport protocol to poll a file from a machine in the network, which is not the XI? Or do I have to use FTP instead?
    2. If I understand it correctly - when using the FTP-File Adapter, XI has the role of a ftp client. I have to run a ftp server on my distant machine. XI connects to FTP-Server and polls the file.
Can it also be configured the other way round? The scenario I think of would be: FTP client installed on distant machine, which connects to FTP-Server(XI) and loads up a file. So XI would act as FTP Server.
I know this works, if I install a ftp Server on the computer my XI runs on, and use the NFS-File Adapter to observe the folder. But I want to know, if I need a second, independant ftp server for this.
    3. And last but not least: When do I need the active ftp mode instead of passive?
Thanx a lot for your answers!
    Ilona
