Some wonderful substitutions out there for MobileMe!

I am really impressed with what has happened in the last year or two regarding web hosting options on the web.
At first I was unhappy that Apple was dropping MobileMe, but having moved to a new web host, who charged me less than $50 for a year's worth of hosting, gave me the option to have two sites with urls, free transfer of my domain name, and really good customer service, I find myself sorry I didn't do it sooner.
Since iWeb works in Lion, I feel confident that for the next two years my hobby of putting up web sites will be fine.
This posting isn't a question, it is just offering a little encouragement to anyone who is sitting on the fence, wondering if they want to go through the possible techie **** of changing web hosts and learning new ways. It really is easy.
Just remember that if you set up a new site, and are transferring over a domain name, it really will take around 5 days for that all to take effect. I dropped my old service, and had the site go dark for several days until the domain name transfer took effect. Most people will keep the domain name registered at the old place, and that kind of change really takes no time at all.
I guess this discussion board will go away in a year, but iWeb, combined with a third party web host, will be fine.

This morning I went to the local Apple store, a reseller, to have a first hand look.
iWeb is installed on Macs with Lion.
Curiously, its icon is not in the Dock as if Apple doesn't want you to know it, but the app is in the Application folder, as are a lot of other apps BTW. So you may want to look in that folder.
Did you know that Apple discontinued iWeb 1 and 2?
Somehow they were never deleted from my Hard disk. And I use them from time to time.
So I wonder what the despair is based that Apple will "delete" iWeb?
On the other hand, i'm still frustrated that VisiCalc isn't updated with more features.

Does anyone know how well the Intel Iris Pro installed on new 15" MacBook Pros performs using Photoshop and Lightroom?  I have seen some differing opinions out there, and I would rather not shell out the extra cash for the Nvidia if I don't have to. I mostly do photo editing for business and personal use. I have not used the 3D function in Photoshop, but I would like to know that I could.

I have 30+ iPhoto Libraries, so every time I open one, iPhoto wants to copy the 3 events I had out there when MobileMe shut down. Those 3 events are already saved in the appropriate iPhoto libraries. Wish I had deleted them on MobileMe! How do I turn this process off?

As Larry mentioned I use a different DAM (digital asset management) appliclation, Media Pro 1. For other possible DAM apps visit  The DAM Forum which is for professional photographers.  There the various apps are discussed along with workflows.  If nothing else you'll get some good information on managing digital "negatives".
Media Pro lets you manage the folder organization of your photos and write metadata, keywords, titles, and other metadata directly back to the files.  No matter what app you go with have a backup plan in place to keep current backups of your source photos on separate hard drives.

  • Is there work out there for freelancers?

Might as well ask this here.
Must be loads of people trying to make a living out of this,
in your opnion is there work out there for a freelance web designer

    Word of mouth mainly?

I once built an e-commerce site for a friend. He paid me $100
    a month, plus
7% profit from the site for over two years to pay for it, so
    I made around
$2,500 on it, just not all at once. Plus I had maintenance to
    do on the
site. Since I got an e-mail every time he sold something, I
    saw that in one
year the site generated about $28,000 for him, and all he was
    selling was
little teacup nightlights. He'd buy teacups, cut them in
    half, and put
little light fixtures in them. I no longer make anything off
    of it, though.
As for doing it nowadays, I don't know. *I* don't like the
    idea of running
a business, then spending a bunch of time on a website only
    to have the
client tell me that they've changed their mind and don't need
    the site after
I've already built it. Then I'd be forced to either take the
    loss of time,
or go into a legal battle to get paid. I'd have to draw up
    contracts, hire
a lawyer, etc..., and it's just a bunch of crap I don't want
    to deal with.
Now if I had some kind of partner who gets off on running the
    business side
so I can stay in the back room and just fill orders for
    websites to be
    built, that would be fine.
I once even thought of starting just a service for personal
    web pages for
maybe older people who are easy to please and who just might
    want a small
page with a few updates every now and then to add
    photographs. To run this
business, I'd get an account with one of those webspace
    resellers so I can
sell, say, a 5-megabyte account for $6.95 a month with one
    minor page update
per month, and $5.00 for each additional update. Page setup
    would be $20
for one page. I'd create, in advance, a set of graphics for a
    bunch of
different styles. I dunno. I'd need a LOT of accounts to be
    able to make
any decent money off prices being so low, but since none of
    the sites would
be anything that big, any updates that are needed I could
    take care of in
probably 10-15 minutes, at most. I'd just need some kind of
    billing
software that allows me to add items and prices, then just
    drag the item
into the user's account so their credit card is billed
    automatically each
month for the right amount, or I could mail out paper bills
    and run into
    possibly dealing with bad checks.

i upgraded to lion when it first came out but today i tried to open my photoshop cs2 and its telling me the powerpc applications are no longer supported is there any fix out there for this

Lion is Not compatible with PPC (Power PC) based software, such as your older version of PhotoShop.  Your choices are you can either upgrade to the newer version of PhotoShop, or you can backup your data and apps, erase your harddrive and reinstall Snow Leopard.
    Hope this helps

  • Any good workflow tutorials out there for those moving from iPhoto Aperture

Any good workflow tutorials out there for those moving from iPhoto to Aperture 3?
Especially those that deal with using a laptop and off-line storage of photos.
    Cheers, Andrew.

There is no reason to not port a number from another provider (unless leaving a contract early and being charged the ETF) for if one does decide to switch back to their previous provider within the first 30 days after making the switch, the previous provider will take one back with welcome arms and the same phone number can be used this way.
Your way required getting a new phone number which can't be changed or potted after the fact for single line account.

  • Any ipod touch cases out there for me?

I've been all over the internet looking for the perfect case for my 1st gen ipod touch. I've seen some really stylish looking skins, but I want the protection of a silicone or hard case (I think I'm more partial to silicone). Can I have both style and durability? Does anybody have any recommendations?

I ordered mine from ivyskin.com. (they make cases for iPods & iPhones) It's a hard case that completely encapsulates the entire unit, including a thin plastic cover over the touch screen to protect it from scratches. It's sleek design is lightweight and the clear case makes it almost an "invisible" shield.
At around $30 it's comparably priced with all the other cases out there.

  • Any Better EMail Program Out There for Macs?

I used Eudora as my email program for 10 years and loved it. Unfortunately, it became very buggy on the Snow Leopard operating system. Entire mail boxes got corrupted. So, I had to find a new mail program. I was told that Apple Mail was the best and have been struggling to have it meet my needs for the past few weeks.
Is there any other program available out there that is more like Eudora, but still supported with a new version for Snow Leopard - or at least an be run on this operating system?
    Thanks!

IMHO, Mail is the best. It will take a lot of getting used to for someone migrating from Eudora, though. I used to use Eudora as well, but gave it up years ago in favor of Mail.
Thunderbird will have some features that Mail lacks, but in turn lacks a lot of the polish and some very basic features that Mail has. For example, my wife was trying just two days ago to send a message to a subset of a group defined in Thunderbird's address book, and after ten minutes of both of us trying to figure it out, we finally gave up and she used _pen and paper_ to note the addresses. Doing this would have been trivial in Mail. These sorts of little not-uncommon niggling issues would prevent me from ever using Thunderbird myself.
You could also try [MailSmith|http://www.mailsmith.org>, which was a pretty compelling mail client once upon a time, but which I haven't looked at in many years.

  • Are there any web-based products out there for client project and interaction...

    Dear Web Designers,
Is there any open source, free, php software packages out there (or web products - a doc com tool) that allows a web designer freelancer (like me) who has their own business to take in client requests or new project request descriptions and requests from anyone and allow me to respond back with an answer, a timeline, status on the project etc etc. (besides just a standard contact us form - is there any project managment tool for web designers that works well for that?)
    Andrew

Sure.  There are lots & lots of them.  It depends on your coding skills, which scripts and databases your server supports, and how many bells & whistles you want.

  • What other pro video software is out there for Apple?

Since I can't install FCS2 on my new MBP running Lion, what else is out there in professional video editing that I can install on Lion?  Any suggestions?  I've looked at Final Cut Pro X, but everyone is complaining about it....

Avid Media Composer 5.5.3 works on Lion.  $995 for anyone who has a previous version of FCP (normally $2500).
Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5.5.  Also $995 for owners of FCP.
Both on sale for a SHORT time (been on sale all month), so get them while you can.  The one most like FCP is Premiere Pro.  Avid is mainly for broadcast TV and film.

  • Is there any spyware out there for the mac?

Been looking at spyware to monitor teenager's activities on the iphone 5. Seems they all want Jailbreak installed, but I understand that ruins the warranty on the phone. I don't want to do that, or anything illegal. But, we do need to monitor his activities. Any other programs out there? Thanks a ton. I know...the logical thing to do would be to take away the phone, but teachers contact him there, as well as sports coaches, and his own boss sends his hours there. And, with Find My Phone, we can track him. So, we would rather him have the phone, but need to watch it closer.
    Thanks.

What is a good music subscription service for the Mac, where I can download as many songs as I want to my iPod for a monthly fee?
I don't think there are any. Any kind of subscription service would require DRM. The only type of DRM that the iPods accept are Fairplay which is exclusively used by Apple.

  • Are there any downloadable games still out there for 2nd Generation iPod?

I am searching for games that will download on an older iPod. Purchased two 2nd generation iPods on Ebay and am having trouble getting any games that are compatabile. Are there any still out there. Purchased these for 2 grandchildren. Help. Not only are there games, how do I download them. Can I do it from my computer? Can't find any in the app store on the iPod itself or have I just not looked hard enough.

They are there, but it's not easy to find these days.  At least your iPod touch can run iOS 4.2.  My old original iPhone can only run up to iPhone OS 3.1.3...
I used to be able to go into an app category in iTunes (on the computer), and sort the listing by release date, newest to oldest.  Then, I could go to the end of the list, and the older apps/games would be the ones that worked with the older hardware and iOS versions.  However, this method does not seem to work well anymore.  The lists do not appear to go back far enough, so the apps at the end of the list are still fairly new.
I found an app recently.  It's called VintApps.  You can go to the App Store using iTunes on the computer and search for it.  It costs 99 cents.  I can set it to "filter" based on iOS limitation (and other factors).  I can then browse in app categories (in the app), and it shows me lists based on the criteria.  Selecting an app from the list provides its description.  This lets me find apps that work with 3.1.3 (or 4.2 in your case)
Because older devices are slower (with a small screen), what I do is use VintApps on my iPhone to find something that looks interesting.  Then, I use iTunes on my Mac to find that app in the App Store.  If it looks good, I get it there (using my computer's iTunes) and sync it to my iPhone.

  • Any external DVD Burners out there for Dual G4 450?

Hey, I have a Dual G4 450 Gigabit Ethernet with 10.2.8 w/ firewire 1 and a meh USB2.0 from CompUSA. I've checked a couple of places for an external DVD burner but most are listing a 500mhz as a requirement. The OWC drive they're selling isn't listing a speed as a requirement, so I'm worried about ordering their drive. Does anyone have their drive and would know if it works with my speed, and is there still a drive out there that can work with my computer? Thanks for your answers.

    Went ahead with another burner.
