Some workstations slow to open files on 2008r2 share?

We have been moving from Novell to Microsoft for a couple years company wide.  Until now, other than outlook, the apps were all local with the data being moved from a Novell server to a 2008R2 server.  A week ago we moved our final drive which
was three apps the run .exe's from the server directories.  Out of 300 PCs - all replaced in the last year based on ghosts - about 25 took ten minutes to run an app from the shortcut.  All the other PCs don't have the trouble.  I first went
to that vendor but after troubleshooting, I realized they had slow connections to any windows drives.  They were fine hitting the Novell drives.  I'm guessing since they only pulled documents from the MS drives until now, the slowdown wasn't felt.
Running the larger exe is where the problem started to show.  I've tried many things I found online so far to no resolution.  These things include:
autotuning set to restricted, normal or disabled
turned smb2 off/on
turned RDC off/on
set NIC to autonegotiate
Not server or switch based as good PC is sometimes in the cube right beside bad pc.
ran windows update
same NIC drv between good and bad PCs
Any ideas where to go next?  Thanks for your help!

Hi,
Before going further, what’s the operating systems of these workstations?
The following article focuses on slow network performance when opening a file located in a shared folder on a remote computer, and may be worth taking
a look at.

  • 8Core MacPro slow to open files into Photoshop

    Machine Spec: 8Core - 9gb Ram - 2x750gb - 1900XT. (brand new machine)
    Running Photoshop (CS2 9.02)
opening 112.3mb (8-14mb jpegs) and resaving them in a batch 8Core will average 6-7 seconds each.
    Machine Spec: 1.8Ghz G5 - 4mb RAM - 2 x 160gb. (over 4 years old)
    Running Photoshop (CS2 9.02)
opening 112.3mb (8-14mb jpegs) and resaving them in a batch 8Core will average 7-8 seconds each.
can anyone tell me why 8core is so slow?

The only other factor is the performance of Seagate drives in Mac Pro. Some report slow random small file reads etc. Later units (Mac Pro) may have an improved SATA chipset, but maybe not everyone. Great drive for large file sustained I/O though.
For me, I can't cut my attachment to WD 10K Raptors. Excellent boot drive and where you keep the OS and applications to 75GB or so (and keep data files away from your boot drive!)
Optimizing disk drives for CS2 helps. Dedicated boot drive, separate fast drive for scratch, and another for data and media.
The Mac Pro takes off working with large files where it helps more to have large amount of RAM used for caching.

  • EXTREMELY slow to open files - Illustrator CC 2014!

    Hi,
I just updated from Maverick to Yosemite 10.10.1
See my system config on this monosnap link:
    http://take.ms/2CAxh
I have installed the latest Illustrator CC - 18.1.1
    See monosnap link:
    http://take.ms/lgqj0
I have a big problem everytime I try to open a file from within Illustrator CC!
When try to open a new folder (with few or meny files) it TAKES FOREVER for Illustrator to render the files in the folder. (Aprox 2-5 minutes...).
Everything on the machine freezes - it's like a big hang! - but after the loooong wait the hang kind of releases and I can see all files in the folder and can open and go on with the job...
When I do exactly the same but from within Photoshop CC (2014.2.2) everything works smooth, quick and fine!
I have turned of Yosemite transparance, checked that I have Verdana installed.
    What more can I do???
Please help - this problem is extremely tedious to have!

    Hi Evil Lair Bear,
have You find a solution and solved the problem (besides the embedding idea)?
I still have the same problem = extreeemly slow to open files from within Illustrator 18.1.1
We have tons of old illustrator files dating back so far as Illustrator 3.2...
It's impossible fur us at the studio to reopen all old files and embedding pics...
Now we alla have to have to do the annoying work around "find and open the files in finder"...
    This is driving me nuts...
Any help would be magic! ;-)

  • Dreamweaver CS5 Slow to Open File... Enable Related Files

    Hello,
I have a page that uses the Fancybox script and it takes Dreamweaver 50 seconds to open this page.
This script requires jQuery, so in the head of my page I have this:
    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.4.2.min.js"></script>
If I comment that line out, the page opens immediately. Also, if I disable "Enable Related Files", the page opens immediately... neither option is a good one of course.
It's my guess that dreamweaver is retrieving and parsing the remote jQuery file which is what is slowing things down. How to I stop dreamweaver from going after remote files???
I was hoping setting "Discover Dynacially-Related Files" to "Disabled" would do the trick, but trying that has led me to another problem that I posted in a different topic which is that Dreamweaver won't save the selection for "Discover Dynamically-Related Files". That option always returns to "Manually".
Any ideas how to stop dreamweaver from retrieving remote files?
    Thanks!
    Peter

Im on a mac with CS5 and I have started getting an issue with one of my sites where it is slow to open the files. I tried following the steps in the article you attached here but I can not find that preference file at  /Users/Your User Name/Library/Preferences. In fact, I don't have a library under /users/my name.
I can open files fine on a different site, but for some reason just this one is giving me trouble.

Can you drag and drop the attachments visible in the email to the Desktop OK or does that fail ?
Re the sending: Are these recipients on Mac's or PC's as the file type could be an issue, if on Mac's then try setting the Mail Preferences Composing setting to Plain Text not Rich Text and see if that improves things.

  • Lion Preview and Textedit very slow when opening files from Leopard Server

My small office (about 10 users) recently upgraded our iMac's, Mac Mini's, and Macbook Pro's.  We are experiencing a big problem with Preview opening super slow (1-2 minutes) when trying to open JPG's, PDF's, etc from our 10.5.8 Leopard Server.  We have deleted numerous plist files related to Preview, completely deleted Preview.app from one iMac and reinstalled it via Pacifist and still no change in performance.  One of the new iMac's does open much faster than the others, but we cannot figure out why this one machine works well and the others don't.
All machines are showing the below error (dozens of times) in Console when trying to open files directly from the server...
    sandboxd:  ([###])  Preview(###) deny system-fsctl
We have searched the internet for a solution but have not come up with anything that works.  This problem exists with Textedit as well.  We did try opening a file from one Lion machine to the other and it opened very fast.  We also can open files very quickly from older 10.4.11 Tiger machines directly from the server.  So the best we can determine right now is Lion and Leopard Server are not playing nicely together.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have pasted (one of) the console log files below for reference.

"Enable Related Files" isn't the fix for this issue. It's slightly different - I wanted to still load related files, but only the ones local to the file I was editing.
The fix was to use DW's Resolve To IP Address feature. It required adding a registry value - it fixed the issue straight away

  • Reader 9.1.0 Crashes or slow when opening files over a network

Hello all.  I am having a problem with Reader 9.1.  I have files that are on another computer that are accessed on other computers on the network.  There is a need for up to 21 of these files to be open at one time.  As we update the information on them we close them.  At random times and intervals, Reader either is very slow to open up the file, around 5min. and other times it just locks up the computer and a restart is required.  Is this a limitation of the program to work with files on another system?  I do not know much about Reader it's self, but do windows.  Any help with this matter will be greatly appreciated.  I have included the System Paramaters and Installed Plug-ins reports generated in Reader.  I have also tried updating Reader with the lates patch, but that just makes it worse.

Sorry, my email got cut off. I'll post it again...

I've switched to using the cups/foomatic ppd files for these printers and they

  • Photoshop CS3 slow to open files

I have looked at all the answers i can find so far on this and other forums, but have not yet been able to effect a solution, so please bear with me, and hopefully someone can assist further.
The problem is that opening files is painfully slow - having read about the issue with network printers (which I don't have) I have deleted everything listed under printers and re-installed the only printer that I have (which is locally attached via USB, but I deleted it in case Adobe thought is was a network printer).
I have tried to create a generic printer (as recommended by Mr Joslin to jangel2 http://forums.adobe.com/message/2657130#2657130), but the installation failed and no additional printers were visible in control panel/printers.
I am running Windows 7 on a Dell desktop, with plenty of memory etc.
I have a number of external hard drives, and have turned all these on so Photoshop can find them in case it's looking, but this made no difference.
I am at a loss and hope someone can help.
    Many thanks
    Lizzie

Hi All, Apologies for the radio silence and many thanks for your responses.
A techy friend of mine came round and changed loads of settings, restored to a previous point (prior to the windows upgrade) to no avail, and decided that the whole system needed rebuilding. Rather dejected, we searched the internet once more for possible solutions (this time under the heading "slow printing from Photoshop Epson" - although it was not the printing per se that was slow, just the loading of the file).
This is the fix that we found: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?action=printpage;topic=48960.0
The relevant text from the forum (in case the link doesnt work) is:
"I spoke with both Photoshop and Epson support guys and was able to come up with a fix (from Epson).  The fix involved deleting a hidden file in a hidden folder called Program Data on the C:\ drive.  The file had an extension of .AUD and was 40 megabytes in size. It was the only file with the .aud extension. Once I deleted that file, all of my problems went away.  The Epson support guy said that this file has caused problems in the past.  He thinks that the file is generated by the system and just keeps getting larger and larger until everything grinds to a halt.  To access hidden folders in Windows Explorer, click on the Tools tab, click on Folder options,  click on View.  Under the heading "Hidden Folders and files" click on  "Show Hidden Folders and files". You will then be able to access the folder "Program Data".  In the folder called "Program Data" you will find a folder titled "Epson".  In the Epson folder is a folder called "Printer".  In the printer folder is the file (In my case anyway) called "EPAUDF01.AUD.  When I deleted the file (that had swollen to 40 megabytes), the system (or the Epson Printer program... I'm not sure which), generated a new file that was 2 kilobytes in size, after I had restarted my machine.  I keep monitoring the file to see if it changes size, but so far it hasn't."
Having deleted the file *.AUD, Photoshop loaded images as fast as lightning.
Thought this would be of use to you all, and thank you once again.

  • Excel very slow to open files

Recently installed Microsoft office 2010 pro and certain excel files are very slow to open. Every other program opens just fine, however when I open certain documents they can take up to 2-3 minutes to open. If I try to open multiple excel documents at the
same time my computer freezes. I disabled all of the add-ons, however it did not do anything. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this issue?
System information: Intel i5- 6GB Ram, Windows ultimate edition

    Try this :
Go to a folder in Windows Explorer, then Tools ->
    Folder Options, then the
File Types tab. For each of XLS, XLSM, XLSB, XLSX, etcetera, select it, then click
Advanced, (if Advanced doesnt show, click Restore first, then Advanced) select
    Open in the
    Actions list, then click Edit
    Adjust the settings to:
    Application used to perform action:
    - "C:...\EXCEL.EXE" "%1"
    Use DDE
    - Checked
    DDE Message *LEAVE BLANK*
    Application
    - Excel
    Topic
    - System
This is meant to open a new instance of Excel each time you double click on an Excel file.  I had /DDE at the end of the command string and other garbage in
    the DDE area below.
But the above worked for me.

  • Illustrator CC slow when opening files

I recently upgraded to a full CC subscription. I really love it. But it takes Illustrator CC a long time to open a simple AI file. Even if it's just a simple file on my desktop. I know it takes a while when you open files that contain a lot of embedded/linked images or if the file is on a network drive, but that's not the case here.
Anyone happen to know a solution?
    Thank you!
    Kind regards,
    David

    David,
Just to make sure (not knowing whether you had the trial CC before this) are all the faces of the Verdana and Tahoma fonts installed and enabled/activated through the OS (not font mangement) as TTF (not OTF)?

  • Dreamweaver very slow when opening files with external links

Is there any way to fix Dreamweaver CS5 (Windows 7, 64bit) when opening files with external references?
For example, I have a very simple CSS file, and toward the top the file has a line that says:
    @import url("https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Ubuntu:500,700");
This causes the file to take around 20 seconds to open in DW. If I comment out the line or remove it, the file opens almost instantly. This behaviour is also present in files that contain an SSI.
DW often crashes before being able to open the file and I need to restart the app.
Can I disable DW from attempting to load the references?? It's obviously what is causing the issue IMO and would love to make DW workable again!

"Enable Related Files" isn't the fix for this issue. It's slightly different - I wanted to still load related files, but only the ones local to the file I was editing.
The fix was to use DW's Resolve To IP Address feature. It required adding a registry value - it fixed the issue straight away

  • Detect an open file on a share before the folder is moved

I'm adding an archive feature to a labview application.
It will archive all the files and subdirectories within the directory I point to.
My challenge is as follows: The directory is on a network share drive so before the VI moves the directory to the archive location it needs to know if any files are open.  If any are open then it would try again later.  If the labview move function errored out before it moved a directory with open files it would be the perfect solution but it doesn't function this way - it errors after it moves everything except the open files.  Moving all closed files then moving the others when they become available isn't an option for me.
In researching this it appears I need to access some kind of network management interface to get this info.
Does anyone know what resource I could use for this?  I thought "active directory services", accessed through .net, but it seems "user centric (namespace)" not file status centric - not sure though - haven't worked with ADS much and find it less than user friendly to research.
I figure there has to be some mechanism I can hook into programmatically as a network client to check if any files within a directory are open.
My application will run on a network client and I don't have access to the server/s hosting the share.
I'm sure others have encountered this situation or maybe you could point me to another forum for this?
    Cheers,
    Christopher

    Hi Cristopher,
It seems like the best way to achieve this functionality would be to use two steps. First, check if any of the files in the directory are open, then create the archive only if none of the files are found to be open.
You may want to check out the following page: How Can I Check if a File is Already Open? The issue of checking for applications being run on different machines within a network is addressed there, so it may be a good resource for you. There are also several other Knowledge Base and Developer Zone articles linked to that page that should be helpful.
    I hope that helps!

  • Issues Opening Files in Network Share

    Hello,
I'm hoping someone can help me with this issue I'm having,
I use a Windows 7 desktop at my office and I have a Network Share on a Windows 2008 Server where I save all my documents and file I work on each day.
I use my Macbook Air when I'm working at my other office and when I'm traveling.
    My issue is this,
I setup and able to connect to my Network Share and see all my folders and files. Although if I try to open a file it tells me it can't find the file even though I used Finder to browse right to the file and double clicked on the file. I can copy the file locally to my MacBook, work on the file and then copy it back to the Network Share.
From me testing different things this is what I have found,
It's only Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents that don't open from the Network Share. - I do have Microsoft Office 2011 Mac installed
TXT & PDF Files open just fine from the Network Share.
I doesn't matter if it's Word, Excel or Powerpoint files created on my Windows 7 desktop or my Macbook Air, once it's moved to Network Share I can't open it.
This is where it gets really confusing, other Network Shares I can open the Excel & Word files right from the Network Share, it's just my personal Network Share and I put in the right username and password for my Network Share since I can open the TXT & PDF files just fine.
I'd appricate any help with this issue.
    Thanks in advanced - Jonathan

I have the same problem and i'm not the only one @ my office. seems that everybody who uses mac in our office has the same problem. So could anybody give any advice how to solve this problem? Do we need to configure shared folders on server or just our macs?

  • Acrobat 9.3.4 is very slow to open files

    Greetings:
I have Acrobat 9.3.4 installed on a Dell Latitude D630 with a 2.4 GHz T7700 Core 2 Duo processor and 4GB of RAM. I re-installed Windows XP SP3 about a month ago due to some USB issues. The motherboard was replaced prior to that to try to resolve the USB issues, but the culprit turned out to be corrupted Windows USB drivers. There were other issues with IE which I was unable to resolve without an O/S re-install, so I went ahead and re-installed XP.
The laptop has been running great for the last four weeks and I've had Acrobat 9 installed on the laptop since then, too. It was functioning fine until yesterday. While opening a PDF file on my local hard drive, I saw no disk or CPU activity or any sign that Acrobat was even starting. I opened up Windows Task Manager and saw that Acrobat had started but was "not responding". About 30 seconds after I attempted to  start Acrobat, the file finally opened and browsing performance in the file was fine.
I have repaired my Acrobat installation (essentially a 10 minute re-install) and that did nothing to improve the startup speed. I have not knowingly changed any Acrobat settings in the last four weeks. I appreciate any suggestions you may have which may improve this situation. Thanks!

First let me disclose that I am not an expert nor even much less. However I used to have this slow as a turtle opening of FF until I got rid of my antivirus software which at the time was Avast. I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials and have had no problems since. FF loads in 3 to 4 seconds!

  • Photoshop CS4 too slow to open files

    Hello all,
I have a problem, when I open a file on Photoshop CS4, the program open this slowly. I tried with image of various dimensions also 20kb and located on desktop, but photoshop it's always too slow.
    Can you help me???
    Thanks

One thing that can affect the document opening time is the establishment of the GPU-based display management.
As a test, go into the Edit - Preferences - Performance dialog and uncheck the [  ] Enable OpenGL setting, then close Photoshop completely.  Now restart Photoshop and try opening documents.  Do you see a substantial change in opening speed?
Of course, disabling OpenGL is not a viable long-term workaround, as you lose some features.  But if it DOES result in a radically different timing, you could try re-enabling it and going into the Advanced menu and trying the different settings there - for example unchecking every option.  Make sure you close and restart Photoshop after ANY configuraiton change so that you're sure you're testing the new settings.
    Good luck.

I authorized this computer, as well as my primary PC. I purchased my songs on my PC and authorized this computer to download via the icloud. All songs were successfully downloaded and will play without problem except for "Bass Head" by "Bassnector".
