Someone's knocking, but no one's home . . . in Apple Mail.

I have mail set up to make a sound to let me know email has arrived. Periodically, I will hear the sound, go to Mail and find there is no folder showing any unread mail in it. I will go through my folders looking to see if there is a new email but it did not show up. I never find any.
Today, I had several pings but no one was at home again. It just so happens, I have my laptop with me and I turned it on, fired up the computer and checked mail through it. It showed a brand new email that was not appearing on my desktop.
I have same rules on laptop as I do on my desktop (I sync them). But I even deleted all my rules on the desktop at one time to see if there was some sort of weirdness going on with the rules that would announce a new email but not show it. (I thought maybe it was sending it straight to the trash)
None of that is the case. (I also turned off junk mail filter long ago, but that is another story)
Anyone have an idea as to why I am getting notices of emails arriving but then not finding them?

It seems that the OP might be reporting trouble on the iPhone email client. I have also had this happen on occasion - the iPhone will chime and vibe to let me know there's an email, but when I open the email app on the phone there doesn't appear to be any new email.
It seems to help if I click the "check for new email" circle arrow thing in the lower left hand corner, it will then actually go out and query the account and download waiting email. Seems to happen with Yahoo the most because of the Push system not exactly working all the time.
I have been told by Apple that Yahoo push functionality uses Edge to notify the phone of a new email, regardless of your current internet connection type, but will still then actually download the email using your current active internet connection (like wifi). So maybe you have to manually force the check of your email account when you hear the chime?
Gary, what email provider and internet connection method are you using when this happens? Or like the poster above, are you reporting something in the mail.app on your Mac desktop?

if you change appleID you start from scratch
settings->store->appleID is where you remove what appleID your ios device see as yours

Limit on number of addressees in one message? (using Apple Mail)

Is there a max number of addressees that can be contained in any one outgoing message? ..... i.e., if this limit is exceeded, the message will not be sent to any of the addressees.
I use Gmail via Apple Mail 2.1.3. Gmail's limit is 500 addressees.

Hi Bob, I have read of a limit far less than that for Mail, but can't remember what it was.
Is this in the To:, CC:, or BCC: entry btw?
IIRC, using a Group instead of individual addies gets you more.

Help! I moved, got a new internet connection via cable modem, the AEXn worked fine for a month and three days ago it decided to stop working. I reconfigured the thing and the airport utility says I'm connected, I tried plugging directly in using an ethernet cable which works, but there's not wireless connection. There's a green light, Utility says ok, cable modem's working fine, signal is good, but no internet! I attempted a soft and hard reset but for some reason the reset button doesn't do anything, I've read everything on this site, now what? Anyone have any thoughts for me before I turn the darn thing into abstract art??? Thanks so much!!

Unfortunately, it may take several attempts to get the reset function to work, but I strongly suggest trying the "hard" reset a few more times before giving up. If you're still not successful after that, I would recommend taking the AirPort to your local Apple Store or Retailer to have them take a look or exchange it.

Missing Widgets: The light is on but no one is home

Since my upgrade to 10.5.6 (at least that is the only significant event i can think of) all my widgets have gone missing. Well they are there, somewhere... but they are no longer visible. It's as if they are somehow off the screen somewhere. I know they are still there because i can see all the property files for them in prefs, and those with an audible cue still make their noises.
I've tried resizing the display resolution in the hope that the widgets might get re-jigged. I've tried hunting the forums for people with similar problems but no luck.
Is there someway of forcing the widgets into the visible area of the display? Are there some properties i could adjust in prefs to move these hidden widgets into the centre of the screen? Am going nuts.
Any help much appreciated.

you shouldn't have had to do that. removing the preference file didn't really remove your widgets. You just have to add them to the dashboard. start dashboard and click on the + in the lower left corner. all your widgets are listed at the bottom.

Lights are on but no one's home

:eek: I just lifted my G5 40 MB iPod from On Stage II, and thought I heard a quick spitting sound. Now the only thing that my iPod does is to show a screewn indicating that the battery is fully charged. It can not be started by pressing the center and menu button at the same time, or by plugging it into my computer. Is it dead??!!?
My Apple Care is expired, and this is a replacement from 5/25/07

It took the entire day of doing a reset without result and letting my iPod rest in the On-Stage II recharger/speaker system, and then, for whatever reason, the reset worked. My iPod has functioned fine ever since.
Thanks for the reassurance that some helpful suggestions are better than others. I kinda knew that. Slapping an iPod against my hand was reminiscent of unplugging and re-plugging USB cords -- after blowing in them and in the outlet. That always struck me as dumb, but sometimes the issue disappeared afterwards.

*Solved* 870A-G54. The lights are on but no-one's home

Has been working fine and dandy for about 6 months. Unplugged a HD this afternoon, touched nothing else, and now won't restart/POST. Splash screen shows but hangs there and no beep
4 phase power leds are on
Fan is spinning
Splash screen is showing on Monitor
Ticking noise coming from somewhere but can't tell where

Very strange. I had already disconnected/reconnected all cables but thought I'd humour you by doing it again, and totally removed the HD I had disconnected/reconnected and it worked!

Trouble emailing photos from Aperture and iPhoto, recurrent message about severs and passwords. I use gmail, but system insists on defaulting to Apple mail. I haven't used the Apple mail program for years. What's up? Thanks

I cannot get either Aperture or iPhoto to email jpegs. I use gmail but there seems to be a problem with server selection or identification and passwords that I cannot figure out. Please note that I am not particularly competent technologically, so please use baby steps in your explanation.

Helps if you tell us the exact error message you get but you
1. Need to select your preferred method of emailing (Mail, iPhoto, Aperture, whatever) in the Preferenes
2. If you're getting password not recognised messages, then delete your account from whatever email method you are using and re enter it.

Apple Mail : Move emails from one account to another

I please need help with Apple Mail. A client of mine recently changed her email address from her webhost to online exchange. I setup her new email in Apple Mail and that is all working and nice.
Her Apple mail now shows 2 accounts:
- the old IMAP
- the new Exchange
I would like to consolidate all emails from her old IMAP account to her new Exchange account, so that they are all in one place. In Outlook you can just drag and drop emails and folders between the accounts, but my client says that that doesn't work in Apple Mail.
How would I go about moving these emails from one email account within Apple Mail to another?
Sorry for the trivial question, but I am a Windows girl and not as versed in Mac;)

Try creating a new mailbox in the On My Mac section and drag the e-mails there. Mail/Mailbox/New Mailbox.

Why am I not seeing the people CC on an email in my apple mail but I see them on my iphone?

I just received an email with 5 other people CC'd in on the email. I can see them clearly on my iphone but one my iMac in Apple Mail I can only see the sender.

I have checked "Use classic layout", in Mail / Preferences / Viewing, and this is an example of the header of a test email I sent to myself and cc myself.

I am having issues sending email from the apple mail application. reciving works but somtimes it takes an hour to send if at all. any thoughts?

I administrate an office and we switched to macs very recently. Now the problem I am having is one of the workstations will send emails but very slowly and it sometimes it doesn't send at all through apple mail. It work fine through gmail client but this client needs to use apple mail and it just won't send it will recieve messages flawlessly. Any ideas? This is the only computer having problems with this!

Home sharing is turned on on both of my computers but only one computer is showing the icon.

I have both of my computers turned on and home sharing is turned on on both computers as well but only one computer is showing the icon so I can't share. I have tried turning off the home share and turning it back on but nothing changed.
Any suggestions?
