Someone stole my ipad today..can the thief format it
says it all in the title really..been reading a lot info online and i read that with IOS7 you need the passcode to reset it is this true..and also if i give you the serial number and a copy of the receipt can you help me find it

IPAD AIR - Lost and Stolen. Can the thief use my locked device?
MY iPad Air was lost/stolen while crossing the border between Hong Kong and Lowu (Shenzhen).
The device is locked. Under the support/my devices it shows that my iPad is registered with Apple and I do have the serial number for the device handy.
I tried to use "FIND MY IPHONE" and the device does not show up. It is possible I did not activate that function although this is unlikely.
Can the thief use my device by erasing all the data? Can Apple trace the device and if so, who do I report it to at Apple ?

I also read somewhere that in the event I use the remote function via iCloud to delete the contents of the iPad, the thief could then use it. I have no intention of doing this.
I have just secured myself for now and changed all my passwords including the Apple user ID one.
I guess my best bet would be to report and register the number to the local authorities in case it gets returned / shows up by some good samaritan ? -

Photos/documents/videos can be kept private and private browsing is possible with this.
no matter what you are doing, pressing the home button or power button locks the application and can be opened only by a password set by you while others can access rest of the applications.
what i do is login to the mail program in the browser and leave it there. so, the moment you click on this app and give the password, you will be taken to your mail (on the website).
But the best part is that you can keep all sensitive documents hidden no matter how many people use it.

If my itouch was stolen and I put it in lost mode can the thief still turn on the wifi for me to locate it or do they need the password to turn it on?
It can still connect to Wifi in Lost Mode. As long as you do not erase it, you will be able to track it via Find My iPhone. And even if you erase it, the Activation Lock will prevent the thief from ever being able to use it:
