Something happened after install security update 2008-006(PPC)

Hi there,
I have just installed the security update 2008-006(ppc) for my old powerbook, G4 1.5Mhz. Now every time when i go to network in the system preferences, i immediately got this message "Your network setting have been changed by another application" No matter how many "OK" i clicked, this message will kept appeared. I tried to restart my powerbook, but the powerbook responded that the system preferences have cancelled the restart. Can only force quit the system preferences. I can still connect to the network, just that if i go to any new places with new network setting, i will not be able to change the network setup in my powerbook.
Before i install the upgrade patch, this never happened, so i am assuming it was because of the patch. Can anyone help me? thanks.

This seems to work also...

  • OSX cannot boot-up after installing Security Update 2008-008

    Hi Everyone.
    I'm using a MacPro 2 x 2.66Ghz Dual Core Intel Xeon with 3GB RAM with Tiger 10.4.11.
After installing Security Update 2008-008, my OSX was not able to boot-up. The screen shows the Apple Logo and the spinning grey gear wheel. It stayed that way for several hours.
I finally switched it off and re-installed OSX 10.4.8 using the Start-up disk that came with my MacPro.
Now I've updated the OSX, all the software & updates EXCEPT Security Update 2008-08. My MacPro works fine now.
Was Security Update 2008-008 the cause of this problem ?
    Sincerely,
    Azman

Was Security Update 2008-008 the cause of this problem ?
Probably not directly. Very likely something was not quite right on your computer before the update and the update happened to exacerbate that. A number of people feel that optimizing the maintenance of your computer before doing the update and doing the update under controlled conditions minimizes problems.
There's been recent discussions as to what steps are truly necessary in doing a minimal problem update.
I think #1 to which all agree is to make sure you have a backup of your computer in case you do need to back out of it again.
Some like to boot from their installer discs or an external backup and verify (and if necessary repair) their internal drives as well as drive permissions. This is done with Disk Utility.
You can also go to the step of booting into safe mode to do the install.
I like to download the update onto my computer and install it from there rather than let Software Update do it. I know a few people who had problems with doing the update via software updater found a manual install to work.
    Repair permissions again afterward.
It also helps to only install one update at a time and to run the computer for a while to make sure it is behaving well.
Almost all of the above steps (except backup) have been questioned as to necessity because probably many people have done successful updates without doing them. I say they can't hurt, they can very likely do good (especially if your computer isn't regularly maintained), so why not do them to be safe.

  • Finder(?) problem after installing security update 2008-008

I hope someone can help with this problem:
After I installed Security update 2008-008 the finder(?) has begun to behave irratically.
Whenever the mousepad is clicked, the dock slides off to the left and the click is not registered by whichever application I am in. Mostly menus are affected. I now have to click the application and menu item several times before the click is registered.
Safari is particularly badly affected with the pointer jumping around the screen when trying to copy an url (dock keeps sliding to the left), page back/forward doesn't work - url links within web pages are not recognised. Furthermore, when using yahoo mail, menus like 'send' and 'save' are not recognised.
Any suggestions how to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated!
    Andrew

    HI Andrew,
This is most likely caused by some 3rd part APP or kext that is now out of date.
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then test your problem there.
Now reboot in regular mode, if the problem didn't happen in Safe Mode, but does in Regular mode, See if there is anything relevant in...
    /private/var/run/StartupItems
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems
Also look in in Your Accounts Pref Pane Login Items window.

  • Macbook won't boot after installing Security Update 2008-007 (Intel)

I installed security update 2008-007 (intel) on my MacBook last night using Software Update, but now my machine won't boot at all. All I get is the gray start-up screen with the dark gray apple, but there's no spinning progress bar or anything. After 5 minutes or so, the machine auto-restarts, but again hangs on the gray start-up screen. It does this over and over again until I shut it off. I tried to boot into safe mode by holding down shift right after the chime, but it still wouldn't boot (again, not even a spinning progress bar). Can anyone please help me? I really don't want to lose my photos/movies, etc. I'll backup everything promptly if I can just get it to boot. Thanks.

Hi jared-lee, and again, a warm welcome to the forums!
First for safety, "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

This may or may not fix the problem, but may.
Do you have another Mac around?

Hi finnst, and a warm welcome to the forums!
You're doing great for a first post!
Could be many things, we should start with this...

  • Error Installing Security Update 2008-002 PPC 10.4.11

Software Update was unable to install this update, it moved the .pkg file to the trash.
I moved the .pkg file back to the Desktop, tried again, it failed.
I downloaded the .dmg/.pkg from the Apple web, tried agagin, it failed.
Is anyone able to install the Security Update 2008-002 PPC on their G3 in 10.4.11? I was able to reboot fine, everything else seems to be working properly anyway.

I can't really say which of the 10.4.point OS versions is faster, I think 10.4 and 10.3 both ran really well on my G3 with the 1GHz G4 upgrade. Definitely better than 10.2. 10.4 seems faster, but that may be due to my striped RAID I'm now using, booting and launching apps is pretty responsive.
In the too-much-information department...but since you asked, here are some of the peak numbers (uncached sequential read 256K blocks) from Xbench tests, not sure how good a test this is, but results will always vary a little from test to test. Is anyone getting much better performance than this, and if so what are you using?
For the G3 Desktop: (some tests were done in earlier configurations of my machine that no longer match the config listed in my signature)
    15 MB/sec on built in
    40 MB/sec on PCI-ATA66: 60 GB Maxtor 5T060H6 ATA/100 7200RPM
    40 MB/sec: 320 GB OWC Neptune ST3320620A 7200RPM FW 400 on PCI-USB/FW external port
    45 MB/sec: 120 GB Maxtor 6Y120P0 ATA/133 7200 RPM on PCI-ATA66
    47 MB/sec: 120 GB Seagate ST3120026A ATA/100 7200 RPM on PCI-ATA66
    70 MB/sec: SeaMax 120+120 on a PCI-ATA66RAID, I know the drives don't match, but hey, they're close enough.
    My MacBook:
    43 MB/sec: 160GB 5400RPM Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00 SATA
Is there a better benchmark utility to measure hard drive speeds? I am surprised the MacBook isn't faster with the SATA drive.

  • After installing Security Update 2010-006...

    Hey guys,
After I run the Software Update and security update 2010-006 is installed,
the wifi service of my macbook is not working.
It cannon to any wifi network and also sometimes no network can be found.
    What can I do?

You might try resetting your connection settings using the steps listed in this message:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10695921&start=1
They're not guaranteed to solve the problem, but they'll only take a minute or so to try.
If those don't help, I'm not sure I have any other advice.

  • Lost a new mailbox after installing Security update 2008-03- 10.4.11

I was organizing my mail, created a new Mailbox in the Saved Folder and moved a lot of mail to it. Then I saw that there was a Security update available so I closed all apps and applied the security update 2008-03. Now in Mail, the new mailbox and its contents are gone. Help ?!?

Couldn't find it in my Library so I'm guessing rebuilding an index won't accomplish much. Could I have tripped myself up with the name I used? I called it .MDance and had created it, I thought, in Saved, so that it would be at the top of the list. None of my other mailboxes are named that way. It's a naming scheme I've used in Windows (ugh), but it worked to keep a current, important folder at the top of a list.
And, yes, I know better than to apply OS changes without a backup. So fooey on me. Luckily the messages I lost aren't completely critical. Many are still out on Bellsouth so I can 'recover' that way.
I'll be more careful about backups, I just have been so happy with Mac that I got lazy.
    Thanks for the suggestion.

  • Problem with Entourage after installing Security Update 2008-005

Since installing the update I can no longer access the mail on my server using its required SSL settings in Entourage 2008. I can use Mail without problem, and I can access mail from my other servers (which don't require secure settings).
    Any advice?

  • Problems after installing Security Update 2008-02

I have a PPC G4 (1.65GHz/512 MB RAM), patched to 10.4.11. Before running the 2008-02 patch yesterday, I cloned my system to an external drive, ran Onyx (run all maintenance scripts/delete caches/repair permissions). I also uninstalled Miro 1.1 (intending to do a clean install of 1.2) and uninstalled Flash (intending a reinstall). I turned off ClamXAV/Clam Sentry. Updated using Software Update. Process seemed to go smoothly. After it completed, I shut the system down, waited a few minutes, then powered back up. System seemed fine.
Doubleclicking on the flash install dmg gave me the following error:
The following disk images failed to mount
    Reason: No child processes.
I got the same message trying to install Miro.
Thinking the images were corrupted. I re-downloaded them on a PC, tranferring them via flash drive. Same error. Thinking perhaps the flash drive was corrupted, I tried again with a different flash drive. Same error.
I downloaded the standalone file, thinking to rerun it. Same error.
Logged in via safe mode. Same error.
Reran onyx. Shut down. Same error.
Trying logging in under a different admin profile. It did not recognize the password. I logged back in under my normal admin profile; reset the password on the backup admin profile. Still unable to log in. Back again and created a new backup admin profile. Tried running the Miro dmg under that; same error.
Can the security update be uninstalled? That or any other suggestions greatly appreciated.
    TIA,
    shn

Sorry for the delay in replying -- I had put the install disks in a safe place -- so safe that it took me a while to find them <g>.
Booted off the install disks and ran repair permissions (there were a few, most involving changes from read-only to execute). Verified the disk. Rebooted.
    Problem not solved.
Shut down. Did a few chores <g>.
On restart, I got a message that the system had encountered a problem & I needed to shut down. Powered down. Waited a couple of minutes before powering up (successfully). Thinking that, given the permissions repair, I should rerun the the update manually, I tried rerunning the patch. Same error message.
Shut down & waited a couple of minutes before rebooting into safe mode in backup admin profile. tried rerunning the security patch manually. Same error message.
Further suggestions would be most gratefully accepted...

  • FCE 3.5 wouldn't open after installing Security Update 2008-007

Installed the update from Software Update like a good little girl, then couldn't open FCE, which is my main reason for owning the Mac. Don't remember the details. After it dawned on me that the update or my simpleminded approach to installing it was probably the cause of the malfunction, I rebooted from my Carbon Copy Clone, first time ever for real. After everything was demonstrably back to what passes for normal, I sent CCC another $25 to celebrate!
Now I have checked for updates and SU 2008-007 is still sitting there but I am afraid to try it again. How was I supposed to know about doing disc repairs and god knows what-all else before & after? And what else don't I know that will skunk me? Looks like there have been a number of problems on this forum traceable to SU 2008-007. Kind of like dear old Service Pack 2 on the PC...
What's the downside of NEVER installing the update? Or can somebody clarify for me how to do it safely?
    Thanks,
    Sharron

    Hi Sharronuss,
Let me give you my full method...
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

The combo update for Intel-based Macs...

Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
If all the above do not resolve the problem, then it's time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...

That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

  • Help needed after installing Security Update 2008-008

Had the same problem everyone else has had. I got it back up and running using the Archive & Install procedure. Once I log in I get this error message:
"Application Transport Monitor could not be launched because of shared library error. "8<Transport Monitor><Transport Monitor><HotSyncLib.PPC>"
What do i need to do for this (reinstall a clean install of OS?)
Most of my programs work except for Itunes & Netbarrier Firewall.
Do I need to reinstall these programs.
    Thanks for any help.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to Everyone.

Hi Marty, and a warm welcome to the forums!
"Verify/Repair the HDD the Repair the Permissions." What's that?
It's important to Verify or Repair the Disk before you repair Permissions...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...

  • Security Update 2008 005 PPC - found "alreay exists" items

I found these entries in the "install.log":
./System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework (version 523.12.2.45231202) was not installed because a newer version (4525.18.0.45251800) already exists.
./System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/WebCore.frame work (version 523.12.2.45231202) was not installed because a newer version (4525.18.1.45251801) already exists.
./Applications/Safari.app (version 3.0.4.45231202) was not installed because a newer version (3.0.4.45252200) already exists.
after installing Security Update 2008 005 PPC. I installed iTunes 7.7.1 at the same time but was otherwise current with Tiger 10.4.11.
Should I be concerned with these messages or just ignore them?
Should I install Security Update 2008 005 PPC again but move these files to the trash prior to the install?

Hi, and a warm welcome to the forums!
I don't think you need to worry. Most likely those Security things were taken care of by you installing more recent Safari updates than some might have on their installs.

  • Security Update 2008-006 Broke My iMac

After installing the most recent security update (2008-006) my computer is absolutely crawling to the point where it is unusable. I'm also seeing the Network Settings changed message when I get to the system preferences after waiting 10 min between mouse clicks and watching the dreaded beachball spin away. I have booted from an external drive and reinstalled the update, repaired permissions, run apple jack, disk warrior and drive genius with no improvement. How can Apple release something that would absolutely destroy my computer? Is archive and install my only option? Will Apple release a fix for this? I s it worth the wait for the next security update. I really would rather not reinstall my system. Suggestions? Help please?

How can Apple release something that would absolutely destroy my computer?
    They can't, and didn't.
Is archive and install my only option?
Might be, or if you simply restored the backup you made prior to installing the update. Though an archive and install may not totally overwrite the security issues. It suggests you have some data files that are corrupted as a result of using Applejack in the past. Such utilities should never be used without a backup.
Will Apple release a fix for this?
Speculation on this board is strictly prohibited. Please read the Terms of Use on the right. Your question requires speculation.
Is it worth the wait for the next security update.
No. Because if one issue happens directly following a security update, chances are it will continue happening until you find the software that doesn't work well with security updates, or the damaged preference or cache file that's doing the problem.
You can sort of backtrack but you should do the following if you have no backup.
    1. Clone backup your machine twice*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
    2. Erase and install your operating system using the retail installer, or installer that came with your Mac (whichever is newer).
    3. Run the combo update that brought you where you were before.
    4. Repair permissions.
    5. Run the security update.
    6. Repair permissions again.
    7. Restore your user data to the appropriate folders as outlined in my backup FAQ before once you have verified none of the built-in software is causing an issue. If there is an issue with the built-in software, it says that perhaps your router is not properly configured to understand Apple's security updates and needs an updated firmware or replacement with one that is known to work with the system.
