Something is eating up my memory!

Hi all,
Last year, for no reason I could discern, all of my memory dissapeared. I have an 80gig G5 - so lots of space. I have no music, no films no nothing saved on it. I have run programmes to delete all foreign languages. I've done everything I can think of.
Yesterday I managed to clear a measly 1gb of space, and ten minutes later it had dissapeared. The process seems to be speeding up and I cant imagine what it is. I called the helpline and apparently you cant get viruses, though it is behaving as if it has one.
The only things I can think of that are new on the computer since the problem started are:
Second Life (which I have deleted every file I can find)
Coral painter version 3 - doesnt seem to be the problem though.
Can anyone help? I am desperate - I cant even save word documents anymore cos the computer is completely full!!!

Are you using File Vault?
You should keep about 10% of your HD free. OS X, when needed, uses HD space for virtual memory. With little or no free space, you risk major corruption of your HD files.

How to Remove “Other” Data from iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch
    http://www.igeeksblog.com/how-to-remove-other-data-from-iphone/
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • TosOBEX.exe eats up my Memory

    Hello,
I'm currently using the Toshiba bluetooth stack, that came with the billionton BT Dongle, to manage my BT connections. The BT manager works fine, but I've noticed that TosOBEX.exe eats up my memory causing my PC to run slow. I figured it's the problem 'cause when I end TosOBEX.exe, my PC speed gets back to normal.
Is this normal? Or did I do something wrong?
    Thank you?

Is your bluetooth stack up to date ? If not update it.
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/bluetooth/?page=download
In your case I would also check your COM ports. Maybe there is a conflict with an other device.

  • Upgraded to IO6, seems like the amount of system memory to run is higher, this causes issues with some Apps. I can't get SIRI to work because the amount of free system memory is not enough. how can I tell what is eating the system memory?

My config: 2 GB Ram, Windows 7 ultimate, core 2 duo 2.66 GHz.. I have several addons installed. How come it takes 1GB,. This is crazy lol..

  • Something is eating up my free space

Something is eating up my free space
this started right after I used iDVD for the first time
I have run Norton AntiVirus 11.0.2 (35) it does not detect anything
I get a alert saying it can’t save preferences.

    Hi David,
The problem is Norton. Norton is the worst anti-virus software for Mac. You mentioned something eating up your free space. Go here and read: http://www.jimmyr.com/blog/NortonAntiVirus_is_A_Virus_972007.php
There are no known Mac viruses but if you feel more confident having anti-virus software then get ClamXav
It's free and won't eat up hard disk space.
Search the Leopard and Tiger forums for Norton. Here's just one.

  • Something is eating the memory!

I used to have 30g of memory, and today I only have 500mb!
I got my first message: 'Your start up disk is almost full' yesterday.
Over the past few months something has slowly been eating it. I upgraded to Panther a good 6 months ago and also downloaded Office:Mac. I have a couple of third party games on the system, such as GameHouse. Could any of these have given me a bug that eats the memory?
    Please help!
    Cheers,
    Maria

Hello Adam ( or Maria )
Running a disk with so little space is asking for trouble. A minimum of 10 - 15% is generally considered the safe level of free space.
I would strongly suggest that you ditch some file you know can be easily replaced. ( Music for example ) Repair permissions from disk utilities, re-start, then download this Application to tell you what has eaten all the space...

Post back if you need more.

  • Something that eats up all my memory? (or hard drive space?)

    Hi,
Someone told me that there is something in Adobe Premiere Elements that I need to turn off as it eats up memory unnecessarily.  Is this true?  If so, what do I need to turn off.  All i know is that my laptop is full and I don't believe I have that much on it and I have a hard drive with a 250 GB capacity.
    Thanks.

    lithea
I just figured out what your turn on off referred to when I ran into your Premiere Elements 8 wireframing question.
In Premiere Element 8.0/8.0.1, the Automatic Background Rendering and AutoAnalzyer features are major grabbers of computer resources.
The Premiere Elements 8.0.1 Update was supposed to take care of the Automatic Background Rendering part, by disabling its default status.
The AutoAnalzyer part you had to take care of yourself.
    1. Automatic Background Rendering.
Go to Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 Timeline workspace Edit Menu/Preferences/General and make sure there is no check mark next to the
    option about Background Rendering.
(If you have not download and installed the 8.0.1 Update, please do so. See Help Menu/Update. If that does not work, then use the 8.0.1 download
from Adobe Adobe - Premiere Elements : For Windows : Adobe Premiere Elements 8.0.1 update
once installed this will be no "8.0.1" seen.
    2. AutoAnalzyer
In the Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 workspace, click on the Organizer Tab in the row below the active Organizer header to open the Elements Organizer workspace. In the Elements Organizer workspace, go to Edit Menu/Preferences/AutoAnalzyer Options, and turn off every option under that category.
To get back to the Premiere Elements workspace from the Elements Organizer workspace, in the Elements Organizer workspace, click on File Menu/Exit.
Any questions or need clarification, please do not hesitate to ask.
    Thank you.

  • Something is eating up all my memory on my Mac Book Pro.

I think that I downloaded some virus that is eating up all of my memory on my Mac Book Pro. I had 50 gb and not it's zero...Thank you.

Sorry, but where and what is The Finder?    I am running Tech Tool to check out my Apple Macbook Pro. My Apple disc utility says that I had
40 GB and then it went down to zero with very little usage. I am an honest person, Ogelthorpe, and I made a mistake by looking at Chatterbate and
maybe this **** site had a virus on it? I also looked at some old Busby Berkeley movies on You Tube. The hard drive problems occurred right after these
two searches. I have been erasing unnecessary things but as soon as I get some free space, it just disappears again, right away. It is like a stomach
worm in a dog that eats whatever hard drive space that I can muster...Thank you, again, Ogelthorpe, and it is now 3:45 PM in Caserta, Italy...Grazie!

  • N86: something's eating internal memory

    Hello there,
I own this little good buddy called N86, and now that I have starting getting used to of it, space cruch is the new creepy thing, i have to deal with.
This has got 80MB of internal memory (C:, too low), and after 4 months of use, it says 58MB used by other files. I have been hitting my head all the way browsing internal memory and cannot find what those other files are? Cannot find it on my own, but should be able to, by anyone of your's grace!!! Got an idea... what can be done...to get rid of so called "other files"...?

  • 30-40x processes called "unar" eats up harddrive, memory and processor when TV is connected as external display. What is this and how do I get rid of it?

What is this process and why does it eat up all my hard drive space, memory and processor every time external display is connected? If I have the display connected for long enough, it could easily eat up 60-70 gigs of my hard drive.

Somehow we need to identify what this "unar" process is.
Are you sure that this UnrarX is not in your login items ?? (the things to be automatically started at login)
Perhaps removing any login startup items would help in isolating the problem
As far as I find out, there's no easy way.
There is the source of simple program that will tell you the path to a process from it PID. That's certainly not very elegant but you can find it here.
Looking at your screen shot it would appear (just looking at the indentation) that the "unar" processes are not running as a sub-process of some other process like launchd, sh, Terminal, or something else.
If that's not the case then a important piece of information would be the parent process.
In the screenshot of a fragment of Activity Monitor below, bash is a sub process of login which is a sub process of Terminal. This structure only shows up if you sleected "all Processes, Hierarchically"
It would be useful to look at all the views of processes available in Activity Monitor.
By identifying in which views it shows up we can learn if it is a:
    System process
    one of My processes
    other User Process
    Windowed process
    etc
This will help us in knowing where to look for "unar" and perhaps to figure out what it is, and why it keeps showing up

  • Adobe reader x eats up my memory

I run my adobe reader x (10.1.1) on windows 7. In most cases, when i open the first pdf file, everything works fine. Problem occurs when i try to open the second one. The reader stop working and the memory usage goes up to like 1.6 Gb and keeps increasing. I have to end the prcess before it eats up all my memory. But for some other files, like the pdf file from http://unicode.org/charts/PDF/U0370.pdf, i cannot open at all. Is it a universal problem or just a special case happen to me?
    Thank you for the reply.

it happens to both. I can see multiple instances of Adobe Reader, only one of them is acquiring large amount of memory
As for the pdf i linked, when i tried to opening it, everything stucked. Two processes of adobe reader were shown in task manager, and one of them used up almost all memeory. So i had to terminated it. For other pdf files which caused problems (when they are opend as a second pdf file), i can always reopen it as a first pdf file without problem. This one is different; i can never open it, no matter open it directly or download it and open it locally. i don't know why.
One thing stranged is that this issue never happened before until two days ago, i used to open 10+ pdf file for paper reviewing.
    Thanks for your reply.

  • ICal 10.5.5 eats up my memory; crashes all the time.

After I upgraded my iCal to 10.5.5, I noticed that it started going haywire.
I was trying to put details on an appointment entry when the dreaded turning circle appeared. I noticed also that my Macbook seemed to slow down. I checked my iStat Pro widget and I was shocked with what I saw - iCal's eating up my processor and memory!
