Something keeps corrupting iWeb prefs

Quite often iWeb will not start up and I am forced to quit it. If I delete the prefs all is well.
Anyone else having this problem?

I've finally learned to keep my mouth shut and it's paid off. (Don't tell my wife though.)
P.S. Be careful. It appears as if you're talking to yourself and the men in white coats might come for you.

  • Mail service keeps corrupting.

    Hello all,
My mail service keeps corrupting on my PowerMac running Mac OS X 10.3 Server.
I have reinstalled my server 3 times due to this problem.
Any one else having the same problem?
    any solutions?
    Thanks,
    Chris

In addition to Alex's request for logs, and more info- I would point out that you are TWO major revs behind. I bet the downtime is worth more than the 499 upgrade (the 10 user limit applies only to filesharing). Give tiger or 10.5.1 a try.
It rarely makes sense to troubleshoot something thats already been fixed by Apple.

  • Something gets corrupted then email won't send out of Apple mail

I believe something gets corrupted in Mail and then won't allow email to be sent.  I had realized this problem seveal months ago on my Sister in law's Macbook.  I had created a new mail file and noticed I had this problem with sending mail.  So I'd deleted that one and created a new mail file.  Same problem, I started over again.  This time it seemed to work  Well that was until arond April.  She said she was getting the message that mail could not be sent out of mail several months ago.  Checking her Outbox, she has messages that go back to April that never sent.
I don't know what keeps happening to Mail and whhy after months of functioning correctly, it will suddenly just stop working, that is, mail will no longer send.  She has no problems receiving it.  Only sending.  Her ISP is Comcast so I wouldn't think it would be their problem, but I don't know what else it could be.
    Looking for ideas!
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Here's the thing. I have all the correct setting from Comcast and everytime I've setup Mail on her Macbook I've entereted them correctly.  Like i said, it had been working, up until April.  Oh when I say created a new mail file I mean that I created a new Account rather than changed the settings in the existing account.  That will create a whole new mail file.
    The message she gets is:
The server “smtp.comcast.net” cannot be contacted on the default ports.
Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be sent.
I believe that is her smtp server.  I don't have her laptop in front of me, since she lives 300+ miles away.  i don't understand how something that works for months at a time would suddenly just stop working all together.  She had been able to send mail from last Christmas until April.  That's why I assumed something on her  systrem had corrupted.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Something keeps trying to download on my mac and I don't know what it is. It is not in the apple store and just comes out nowhere and request for my password to download something and I don't know what it is. How to make this stop? It pops up every single day.

    Erica,
I can, with 99.99% certainty, tell you that you are absolutely right in not wanting to download or install this "Helper," whatever it is (but we can be equally certain it would not "help" anything).
I cannot comment as to Oglethorpe's recommendation of 'adwaremedic'; I am unfamiliar with it.  His links to the Apple discussion and support pages warrant your time and attention.
It might be really simple -- Trying looking in your Downloads folder, trash anything that you don't know with certainty is something you want to keep, and then Secure Empty your Trash. Then remove the AdBlock extension, LastPass, and Web of Trust extensions to Safari and re-boot. If the issue goes away, still be extraordinarily careful in the future.
Unfortunately, it's probably not going to be that simple to get rid of, in which case I'd then try the line by line editing in HT203987.
I have no further suggestions (other than a complete wipe and re-install...but that's a pain because trying to restore from Time Machine would simply ... restore the Mal).
For the rest of us, please post when you find a solution.
         Best.

You should take it to an Apple store or an AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) Carefully inspect the hinge joint and make sure there is no debris that you can see, you can try carefully sliding some sticky tape thru the joint to clear any loose stuff out. But this sounds like there might be more going on here, and the hinge is something that you do not want to fool with.

  • Long document with table keeps corrupting

I have a file that is around 300 pages containg a continous table - text only, roughly 13,000 rows that keeps corrupting.
The first file corrupted, so we rebuilt it and when the second one was just about complete, InDesign crashed and now the file will not open... it opens a blank screen but gets a never ending spinny beach ball.
The file also contains nested master pages (total of 2 masters) moved from a book that this file will eventually become a part of.
My question, is the table simply too large for Indesign to handle - (this I find unlikely since I've done similar work many times before) or are the master pages causing an issue or should this file be part of the book before starting it rather than adding it after its finished?
Any thoughts would be appreciated, before we rebuild for the 3rd time. I just want to be cautious to not do anything that might corrupt the book...
    Thanks

Are you patched all the way to 7.0.4?
13000 rows of pasted text. Wow.
Not that it helps at this point, but I'd start doing save as more often, and to a new name so you have some backup versions if it goes south again. An export to .idml (see Remove minor corruption by exporting) if you can get anythign to open certainly won't hurt, either.

  • Mac Mail in 10.6.8 keeps corrupting

My mac mail keeps corrupting and I keep running my disk utilities to fix the preferences which helps for a day or so the back to weird stuff, where when typing characters jump around or it won't let me type at all, then can't send the message after battling through it. Had to shut off one of my mail boxes because it could connect to the server and would just keep spinning. Tried to reistall Snow Leopard and it helped for a couple of days then back to same old. Also rebuilt the boxes.
What should I do to get my mail functioning again?

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    Any improvement?

  • Something is corrupted: Code auto format, Flash CS3

Not sure if this is the forum to post, but thought someone
here would know where and kindly direct me if I'm in the wrong
    place!
I have had Flash CS3 Pro installed for a while, but am only
now using it regularly as AS 3.0 projects were few and far
    between...
However, now that I am, I am being driven insane by the code
autoformat that strips out parentheses and breaks all my code by
changing the meaning of code. As far as I can make out, this is
specific to my machine - implying something is corrupt. So, I
uninstalled all versions of Flash and reinstalled CS3 specifically.
The trouble is, code formatting is still dangerously buggy
and now (because I have uninstalled Flash 8) I no longer have code
    formatting even for AS 2.0!
Has anyone come across this before?
Any ideas how to get past it?
    G
PS: As an additional piece of trivia that may be related,
Flash player is now not correctly reported so I am getting "Install
flash plugins" warnings from a couple of sites even though I have
    it and it works fine.

    Hi,
Sorry, but you are not understanding me - I do not have an AS
2.0 formatter because the formatter I have with CS3 breaks code no
matter what version of ActionScript I am in - the Flash 8 one
    didn't.
As for using non-standard coding, here is an example:
    halfWinPositionWidthRelative=visibleImageW / (2 * fullWidth);
    Is formatted to:
    halfWinPositionWidthRelative=visibleImageW / 2 * fullWidth;
To give you an idea of why this is so bad:
    var visibleImageW =50;
    var fullWidth = 1500;
    trace(visibleImageW / 2 * fullWidth) // traces 37500
    trace(visibleImageW / (2 * fullWidth)) // traces
    0.0166666666666
As another symptom (more an irritant than a problem) all my
"new WhateverClassNameIAmUsing();" declarations get formatted to
    "new WhateverClassNameIAmUsing ;"
This means that I _cannot_ use the auto formatter for any of
my work as it _breaks_ my code - resulting in endless loops, random
madness and absolute corruption of all the work I have done.
I have compared with another CS3 user and the results are
specific to my machine - which is why I want to find out how to fix
    the corruption on my machine.

  • Windows keeps corrupting WU stores

I'm not sure if somebody else had this problem before, but for me this keeps happening every couple of weeks. It happened for the third time recently.
Out of the blue on shutdown Windows says that it's installing updates with the typical counter of percent complete going up. This is weird for a couple of reasons. First, no new updates were available. Second, the updates are configured to be confirmed, so
they cannot be applied automatically. I have confirmed in the update history that indeed no update was installed at that time.
So, on the next startup Windows finishes installing fictional updates again with the typical counter going up until it reaches 100% and then the message is displayed that Windows Update Cleanup is taking place (or something to that tune - I don't remember the
exact message). This step takes considerable time, I'd say at least 15 minutes with heavy disk I/O. Then when I'm finally able to login the CPU spikes with TrustedInstaller hogging one CPU core. When TrustedInstaller finally is done with its thing (a long
time, 2 hours or so) I get a pop up balloon saying that new updates are available. The problem is the "new" updates are quite old and I'm positive that they were installed before. Previously it was .NET framework fixpak or something like that, and
this time they are some security updates, one of them even dating back to 2012. If I let the updates to be applied the same set of updates will be displayed again and again. There is no way of getting out of this vicious cycle.
Obviously, Windows Update stores keep getting corrupt, but my question is why Windows keeps doing this to itself?
The Windows application error log has lots of informational events 1001 WindowsWcpOtherFailure3 pointing to Windows::Rtl::SystemImplementation:: DirectRegistryProvider::SysOpenKey API call (I assume). There are more details in those events, but I don't think
those details are very relevant here.
Is there a way to restore just the WU stores from backup? What I've been doing so far was to restore the whole partition from the latest image (taken monthly) and then restore all the user data from backups, but this is extremely tedious and time consuming
process, and it seems to be only a temporary fix, as like I said this keeps happening every couple of weeks and there is no reason to believe that it won't happen again.
I'd appreciate all the suggestions as to why is this happening and how to fix the issue without resorting to complete partition restore and then restoring the user data.

    Hi Andy,
Thanks for suggestions. I've already the latest update agent installed on my system. I've reset the WU components, but that didn't help. I'm getting error 80070002 (most of the time) and occasionally errors 80080005 and 80244010. When I checked the WindowsUpdateClient
log that you pointed me to I noticed the same error 80070002 first appearing on 1/25. That's about the time the corruption happened. Before that date there were only informational entries, no errors.
I ran System Update Readiness Tool and this is the log file:

I also found DeepClean.log, which is I believe what Windows did to itself to break WU. It's way too big to paste the content here.
I believe that error 80070002 has nothing to do with temporary update files, because deleting them (part of the WU component reset) doesn't help. I did this several times. I need to somehow restore the missing packages/components listed in the log file.
    Where are they normally stored?
    Thanks.

  • Corrupted iWeb site - Unicode character 194 appears throughout site

    I'm using iWeb 3.0.4.
The website I created for my wife's business, BarbroDesigns.com, looks perfect within iWeb. When "Put" to ftp-dom.earthlink.net via Fetch, character 229 (Unicode character 194) appears throughout the website. When I first uploaded the website in 2007 it was fine. Within the last few months something has gone wrong. Recently, I've made several revisions to a particular file, "Contact & Links." Each time I has selected "Get" to transfer the original files to a named desktop folder. Then I launch a new named folder with all the original, unchanged files as well as the revised file. I've also tried uploading just the files at once without having them in a folder. Neither worked.
Unicode character 194 (a capital "A" described online as "Latin capital letter A with circumflex,") appears above headings, beside headings and body copy, at the start of copy blocks, under photos, between photos, and within photo dimension sizes.
It may be that I'm entering text and data into iWeb incorrectly or that, somehow, the file has become corrupted.
As always, I'd appreciate any suggestions or recommendations.
    Thank you, Thor

I appreciate each person who's provided excellent suggestions. I'm continuing to err in fixing the website. Let me summarize what I've done to date:
    - Created  a plain-text file named "htaccess" (no extension),  typed in "php_flag short_open_tag off," (no quotes; using quotes here to be clear) and also typed in "1 AddDefaultCharset UTF-8,"   "2. AddDefaultCharset UTF -8," "3. AddCharset UTF -8 .html," and "4. AddDefaultCharset Off" I then saved the plain-text file as ".htaccess" and put the file in the BarbroDesigns.com public folder via Fetch. I also put ".htaccess" at the top level of "public - ftp-dom.earthlink.net." Perhaps it should have been, as suggested in the document "Fixing Strange Characters on the iWeb Pages," at a higher level; "This file should be located at the top level of your space on the server." I've just added it there with no change in the sige display.
I also made sure the FTP settings, the Server Settings, and the Safari settings were set to UTF-8.
The last thing I did (and admitting that I may be way into overkill) was check W3C: http://web-sniffer.net/, and got this info:Http/1.0 (with Host header) and got this:
    HTTP Request Header
    Connect to 66.175.58.9 on port 80 ... ok  GET / HTTP/1.0[CRLF] Host: barbrodesigns.com[CRLF] Connection: close[CRLF] User-Agent: Web-sniffer/1.0.37 (+http://web-sniffer.net/)[CRLF] Accept-Encoding: gzip[CRLF] Accept-Charset: ISO-8859-1,UTF-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.7[CRLF] Cache-Control: no-cache[CRLF] Accept-Language: de,en;q=0.7,en-us;q=0.3[CRLF] Referer: http://web-sniffer.net/[CRLF] [CRLF]
    HTTP Response Header
Status: HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error
The "500 Internal Server Error" likely indicates I've done too much or done this by misunderstanding the discussion recommendations or done them in error.
If anyone has a suggestion to fix all this I'd be obliged.
    Thank you, Thor

  • I was told at the apple store to open a new I-Tunes library and transfer the music from the old library to the new.  He thinks there is a problem with the old library as it keeps corrupting the i-pod.  Any ideas on how???

Was told by the person at the APple store today to open new library on I-tunes - he felt the current library has something wrong and that opening a new library and transferring the music to there would perhaps prevent the ipod from becoming corrupt.   Any ideas how to do this???

Need more info, if you want better response.
What do you mean by corrupting the iPod?
What is wrong with your iPod?
Which version of iTunes are you using?
What is the iPod software  version as shown in the iTunes summary page?
    Have a nice day!

  • Why does iMovie keep corrupting? Must reinstall after every use.

Everytime I use iMovie to create a project, and then quit once I have finished the session, and then go back to it, the icon just bounces once and iMovie fails to open. The application corrupts and I have no idea why ... its not like I'm doing something wrong with it, just transferring my home videos onto DVD, but I swear everytime I quit it corrupts. Its very infuriating. Can someone suggest a reason why perhaps?

There are two common reasons for this:
    A) The project you worked on is corrupt. This may happen when you empty iMovie's trash. So NEVER empty iMovie's trash.
    B) The iMovie preference file is corrupt. This happens from time to time, but not every time you open iMovie. Delete the file: com.apple.imovie3.plist
(Yes, that's the name for both iMovie 3 and 4)

  • Potential solution to iWeb 08 corrupting iWeb 06 files

I too have been bitten by the problem of having photo albums and other content vanish from my newly converted iWeb 2.0 files. My symptoms were that after each successive save of the converted domain file, the file would lose more and more content (and become progressively smaller). But as soon as the second save I would have photo albums with blank pages, etc.
    After reading this post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5100025#5100025
which referred to a fix that involved opening the domain package and manually deleting all the .plist files, it occurred to me that there might be a way to get iWeb to do this for us.
What I tried - and what seems to have worked through multiple edit / save sessions whereas previously on the second save I would see corruption - was to let iWeb 2.0 update my old iWeb 1.0 domain file, but before changing any content and more importantly before performing any saves on my own, immediately to go through each page (main, blog entries, archive and all other pages) and use the "Change Theme" capability to change the theme for that page twice in succession: once to a new theme (usually just picked at random) followed by a change back to the original theme.
After all pages were "re-themed," so to speak, I saved the domain content.
For me this appears to have created an iWeb 2.0 happy file that I can open, edit and save so far many times without corruption as before.
My rationale for trying this was that if iWeb 2.0 does do things differently, and the old settings in the .plist files in the domain package were somehow involved, then by forcing a theme change at least once that perhaps would force iWeb to fix the content so that it was internally consistent. I'm assuming that the first theme change actually cleans things up; the second one just brings it back to the way I wanted it to appear.
In doing this I have only seen one minor glitch: The Main page for the "Gazette" theme has some strange colored backgrounding on the right and left text panels, but I can live with that for the moment. It's better than recreating my site from scratch.
    -- Bob

i havent tried that - but if you are using a third-party theme, you will have to redo it.
what i also suggest doing is, that you backup your current domain file along with iweb 06!

  • Library keeps corrupting - very frustrating

I'm running the latest versions of SL and iTunes on a 27" iMac. Library is held on an external Drobo running the latest firmware. Solution has been stable for 18 months+ until this started happening this week.
3 times in the last week, the iTunes library file has corrupted. So when I startup iTunes, I get the message that its importing "itunes library.xml". When complete, I am left with a library which has about 20% of total items in it. All movies, podcasts and tv shows aren't showing, so I have to re-add each folder to iTunes to get it to pick them up. Much of my music is also not showing and when I do get everything in, its lost a lot of cover art and has media types incorrectly classified.
The machine and Drobo are powered down properly each night, nothing is just switched off while in the middle of something. I've repaired all volumes with disk utility.
Any idea what could be causing this or what I could do to rectify it please?
I'm also unsure if there's an easy way to backup a few files meaning i can restore the library if this happens again, as so far, each one I try to replace, iTunes seems to initialise it as a new library.
    Thanks,
    Mike.

    I've got the same issues.
    Drobo S. OS X 10.7.2. iTunes 10.5
iTunes will not open at all or opens and says iTunes file is damaged and will rebuild. I've tried everything I can think of to do. Repairs, permissions, checks, boot in safe mode, etc. and nothing works.
I'm rebuilding the iTunes file again to see what happens. There is nothing about this in Drobo support.
Anybody coming up with any new info?

  • Keeps corrupting disk partition, even new disk

After 6.5 reliable years, my Macbook Pro (mid-2007 model 3,1) failed to boot, just freezing at the white screen (in Mtn. Lion) even when the shift is held down for "safe boot". Although Disk Utility and Apple Hardware Test found nothing wrong with the hard drive, I replaced it along with the battery with brand new ones. Since then, no matter what OS X version I load (10.6.8, 10.8, Mavericks), the same problem occurs without warning after 2 or 3 weeks of normal use.
Disk Warrior finds one or two damaged, seemingly non-crucial files each time, but their removal does not correct things. I partitioned the disk last time, and loaded Snow Leopard onto both so I would have a spare. Also fixed permissions. But sure enough, after a couple of weeks the partition most used is not openable while the other one still operates beautifully, no twirling beach balls or anything. But I know it's living on borrowed time.
Can a logic board crap out after years pass and permanently corrupt a disk partition while leaving the rest intact? Could a failing PRAM battery do something like this?

Could be that your new disk is also borked, but I would try getting a new SATA cable in the meantime.
    Good luck!
