Something on my computer is generating heavy internet traffic

hi there,
I need expert help!
two or three months in a row now I exceeded my monthly internet limit, which did not make any sense at all. finally I took a closer look at my computer and here's what I found out: moments after my machine starts up, and even without starting any app whatsoever, my computer starts downloading large amounts of data, probably to the tune of at least 1GB / 24hrs. it also uploads some, but far far less than it downloads. my MacBook Pro, also on 10.6, isn't doing it. when I boot my Mac Pro into newly installed 10.8, no problems there. it's also not doing it right now, but I booted 10.6 in safe mode.
how can I find out what it is, and kill it?

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
sudo lsof -i
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
The output of the command shows what processes are accessing the network. That may help you to solve the mystery.

  • Why does deleting bookmarks content generate Internet traffic

Deleting the content of Bookmarks generates outgoing Internet traffic, verified by Kaspersky Internet Security and a traffic monitor.
It appears that Firefox not only keeps a html copy of Bookmarks content in the Profile but store a copy some place out there on the Internet. If this is so surely that is an invasion of privacy.
    Anyone know nore on this?

All versions of Firefox by default will try to connect to the internet, for details see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Firefox+makes+unrequested+connections

  • My Computer Has Stopped Displaying Internet Maps

Up until about 10 months ago, my computer open up interactive internet maps like 'mapquest' just fine. But now, it won't. I have updated the software just recently, but to no avail. Is this something with Safari?

    Welcome!
I suspect it's the Panther version of Safari, which can be no greater than 1.3.2. I tried it on my G4 Mirrored Drive Door with Tiger (10.4.11) and Safari 3.1.1 and Mapquest worked perfectly.
I moved to our old Beige G3 running Panther and Safari 1.3.2 and there was a little banner at the top of the Mapquest home page that said something like, "You browser may not support all Mapquest features." Tried anyway and, sure enough, it errored out.
Then I tried Camino under Panther and, although slow on the old G3, the map came up with the same image I got from the Tiger-equipped machine.
If you don't wish to upgrade to Tiger, try Camino at http://caminobrowser.org. Its latest version runs on Panther 10.3.9. Camino is a Mac-only version of FireFox and is, IMHO, faster and more Mac-like that the 'Fox. And it's free.

  • Secure link to itunes store failed computer not connected to internet tried ununininstalling everything to do with itunes no joy also error code coming up E0000225 anybody out there got any ideas

Secure link to itunes store failed, (computer not connected to internet tried uninstalling everything to do with itunes,no joy also errror code E0000225 appearing. Have turned off windows firewall and also my Bullguarg security settings. Can anybody out there please help me thanks.

    Hi,
You could be right that the response to clicking on help is a symptom of an entirely separate issue, but nevertheless the secure link to itunes is definitely failed, and I am unable to log into Itunes on either PC.
I also noticed that even if I click on the link to create a whole new Apple ID, I cannot do that either, presumably because the secure link is not working.
After I noticed that there were weird things happening this morning, I did change my Apple ID password in the hope that this might resolve it, but it seemed to make it worse.  Now, all of my apple devices keep constantly prompting me for the apple ID password, and randomly either accepting it, or telling me it is wrong.  I know the password is correct because I can log onto the apple Manage My Apple ID screens in a web browser with it.
I was starting to think that this is an ISP issue (BT Broadband), but I have not seen anyone else posting with the same issue.  Does Apple use a different security protocol to everyone else?  I'm asking because all other secure services seem to be working fine, but anything related to apple that requires a secure connection or authentication is having issues.
I have also seen reference to making sure that Itunes is listed as an allowed program in Windows Firewall.  I cannot seem to do this because it says that my Windows firewall is being managed by McCafee.  I have checked the settings in McCafee, and it appears to me that Itunes, Bonjour, and many other apple programs have been granted "Full" access.  As said before in any case I have tried temporarily disabling the firewall and even this did not solve the problem.

  • I have downloaded the latest version of itunes but when i plug in my ipod it doesn't come up as a device so carn't sync. Its like theres something blocking my computer link with itunes please help!

I have downloaded the latest version of itunes but when i plug in my ipod it doesnt list any devices in itunes to enable me to choose my ipod to sync it. Its like there is a link missing or something blocking my computer talking to itunes. My computer itself recongnises the ipod but itunes doesn't. Please help!

Yes reinstalled itunes a couple of days ago but got it sorted now thanks, the problem was that when i wiped my computer last week and reinstalled everything using the discs the free McAfee anti virus that the computer came with was still in my all programmes list although i aren't using it. This morning i tried unistalling that (didn't think it would make any difference as the programme wasn't active) once uninstalled i pluged the ipod in and hey presto it is now recognised by itunes, THANK GOODNESS. So panick over for now, thank you very much.

  • Can I download iTunes to an external hard drive, to install on a computer that is not internet accessible?

I want to put iTunes on a computer that is not internet accessible.  I would download at my moms house... and put on an external hard drive, to take to my house.
PROBLEM is... I am afraid to download it to her computer, for fear of turning all of her MP3's in to iTunes files... as she does not use an Apple device to run her music.

    Hello yturner1096
You should have no problem downloading the installation file for iTunes and install it on a computer without internet access. The only reason you would need internet access is to access the iTunes Store or to check for updates with iPhones and iPads. Also make sure that you have the right installation if you are doing it for Windows as there is a different install for the 64-bit version. The link below will give you the installation file for your computer. As far as worrying about songs being converted, iTunes does read mp3 and can stay that way. If you need to convert them or make a copy, you can change it to make sure that they stay mp3’s by following the steps in the second artcle.

  • My computer keeps switching its internet setting from Airport to Ethernet without me doing anything. How can I fix this??

My computer keeps switching its internet type from "Airport" to  "Ethernet." As my computer is not connected to an Ethernet cable, the ethernet does not work, and so I lose internet connection every time it does this. And it does this two or three times a minute (no exaggeration). This means that, by the time I've changed the setting and refreshed my page, the internet type has changed again, and I'm back to square one.
So far, I've tried the following:
-Reordering the list of priorities on the "Network Preferences" page
-Going to the Ethernet "advanced" options and switching everything to either "off" or from "automatically" to "manually"
    -Rendering the Ethernet inactive
-Finally, I created a new location with only airport on
Usually, doing these things makes the problem go away for a day or two, and then it just comes back again.
It's not a problem with the internet itself, as this has been an ongoing issue for the past few months, and I've switched locations three times since then.
Does anyone know how to make my computer stay on Airport, and NOT switch to the Ethernet setting all the time?

    Hi samanthaspunt,
I would first try these steps:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
If that does not help, I would try un-syncing and resyncing the music via this article:
iTunes: Syncing media content to iPod

    Cheers!

I am enrolled in an online university program that uses Sakai. Fire Fox updated something that attaches computer script to my Word documents when I upload them. I use a PC and Word 2010

sigh...this is quite idiotic, but I have found a solution. It was quite simple, really, and yet quite idiotic. I share it for all those reading so that, if you know of anyone else that did what i did, you can easily be the "hero" in their lives.
After a continued search via youtube or what have you for any possible solutions, I kept coming back to the fact that I was told by my computer that I didn't have "permission" to do the file deletion. I stumbled upon a youtube video that talked about "unlocking", "locking", certain files and what not.
Long story short, the reason why I couldn't do anything to the files that were on my desktop was due to my "locking" the desktop folder. I must have done this a while back not knowing what I was doing nor the ramifications of clicking a simple box.
    I undid this by:
    Opening Up Finder
then, going to MacHD --> Users --> My Account Folder
clicking on Desktop Folder, I "cmd+I"
I then, unclicked the "locked" option
I went down to the cog/settings and selected "Apply to enclosed items"
resulting then in having all my files on my desktop free accessiblity and delete-ability....
oi...at least I now  know what "locking" a folder (even the desktop folder) can do to other files held within it

No. You need a computer with iTunes and an internet connection.
Place the iPod in recovery mode using one of these programs and then restore via iTunes:

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:

  • Installing Photoshop CS6 on second computer: "no connection to internet"

According to the installation Instruction, Adobe 's single user license allows installation of a single product lincense on two machines. How can I stall Photoshop CS6 I bought last year to my second machine?

Something is blocking your access to the Internet (or specifically Photoshop).
This can happen when something like a spyware / Trojan / adware checker is over cautious. In my case it turned out that Spybot search and destroy was being over cautious.
If this is what has happened to you you can try temporarily disabling your hosts file in the following way. This is assuming Windows 7 (you haven't said which version of Windows you are running).
    Navigate to the following folder:-
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\
In my case this would be
    C:\system32\drivers\etc\
Rename the file "hosts" to something else (in my case I called it "hosts - copy" but you can call it anything).
    Try your activation again.
Then go back and change the hosts file back to its original name.
    This might solve your problem.
    Good luck
    John

iTunes is a program on your computer, it is not "the Internet".  The fact that the program runs has no bearing on Internet connectivity.
Maybe if a little more information was supplied, like version of the Operating system on the computer and version of iTunes, then a little more assistance could be provided.

Hello. Safari 5 has a bug that causes you're router/modem to crash cutting internet access for many on it's users. This can last for several seconds in my case. Their are many threads here on the case and you can Google, "safari can't connect to server" and look for the most recent cases. The only work around that has worked for some has been open dns. Apple will have a fix soon.
