Something practical

Hi my invisible friends!!
I am following the book "Java How to Program" Deitel & Deitel. I almost finished and know I am interested to create something really practical, not just simple unconnected exercises.
I am looking for a book with an application for the real world.
Additionally I would like to know some of your experiences:
How do you work in your companies, for example:
What IDE do you use? Do you use Design Patterns? What kind of applications of programs do you use?
Do you use J2EE? Do you use EJB? etc.
All of these questions are because I am learning J2SE and I have not met anybody working with Java and I am really interested in this matter.
By the way, it there is somebody interested, I am offering myself as a volunteer in any project. I could work 3 hours a day. I WANT TO APPLY WHAT I HAVE LEARNED. I have experience with Oracle Forms 6i.
Thank you in advance.

well thats a noble thought.
However www.hotdispatch.com could be a place where you could get plenty of projects to work on. I am sure there are other similar sites as well.

I Dont understand how one can limit the number of emails, using Ios8. It seems the feature was taken away. i just want to understand why?
yes, i know, what is the point of asking for reasoning, but it is just so frustrating when improvements or upgrades seem to take away features that were logical and productive.  Why must it be so counter intuitive to upgrade.
ANother example is, the one swipe to update facebbok. Ok, this is not important stuff we are talking, but, wouldnt a one swipe feature be more productive then gong to open the app etc
    so frustrating.

You can't limit by number of emails but you can limit by lenght of time. Go to settings> mail, contacts, calendars> accounts> mail> mail days to sync> change the aount of days you wan to sync.
I don't understand the FaceBook question. I update FaceBook by tapping the update button.

  • What does Apple HW Test really test about hard drive?

My 2002 FP iMac was recently jolted. The internal hard drive is no longer recognized. Here is what I know:
When I boot with the Apple Hardware Test CD which came with the computer, it does not recognize anything wrong with the hard drive.
When I boot from an external hard drive, I get a dialog with buttons to Initialize, Ignore, or Eject the hard drive.
When I open Disk Utility (external HD boot), it can see the disk, but says it is unformatted.
I also downloaded a trial data recovery program and it could not find anything identifiable on the hard drive.
I don't really know what the Apple Hardware Test program tests with the hard drive, so I don't know how to interpret the information I have.
    My questions:
Is there any hope for salvaging anything from the hard drive? (Probably not?)
Is the drive itself likely to be OK if I format and re-install my OS? (Is that what the HW Test is telling me?)
I have not tried to format the drive, because there are a few things I would really like to salvage. I have also not opened it up to examine anything on the inside because I would not know what to look for.
Suggestions for how to proceed will be welcome.

The data on the ill-fated hard drive may be recoverable; could be
there has been damage to the drive or the software on it that lets
the computer read files from the drive.
Some disk utilities such as Disk Warrior could see about trying to
fix the drive; although if physical damages exist, it can't fix that.
The booted OS X Installer's Disk Utility has options in the Installer
menu bar (drop down menu to select other things, when not just
reinstalling) and you could see if OS X's Disk Utility from the booted
Installer disc could give you a status report on the drive in Verify, &
also see what it says about 'Repair drive' when chosen to try a fix.
Sometimes, the OS X's Disk Utility can't fix something, and at that
point, other utilities (retail on DVD) may be able to. Then, the tossup
is, whether or not you want to pay for the utility to fix an old drive, or
put the money into a new one.
Data Recovery software is available as download, so if the old hard
disk drive were removed from the computer and a new drive put in,
later on the failed drive could be investigated through use of software
(such as those which can recover, then you pay to unlock results)
and that is another way to consider addressing the old drive contents.
Some would suggest, if you had Disk Warrior or some other disk utility
that could fix the old drive good enough to try and get data off it, maybe
even a full clone or just the files you need, then you would not need to
get the data recovery software. Of course, that software which runs to
see if you have recoverable files, can do that part for free.
The AHT may see the drive is present, while not recognizing a
failure in its firmware or in its directory, etc. Some kinds of disk
utilities can try to rebuild and replace a damaged directory or
other bits of software on the drive so it can be read again.
Usually, the test for the hard disk drive is Disk Utility on the
OS X Installer; and that gives you the boot version that sees
even a healthy drive as an unmounted and repairable volume
when it is correct and not beyond the limited ability of the utility.
Hopefully something practical comes from all these words...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • SSH multiple ports?

I'm looking for a way to increase ssh security in my home data server, since it is connected to the internet. Right now I only have two users allowed to SHH into the server, one sudoer for administrative purposes and one chrooted for SFTP use, and both are using ssh RSA keys (password login is disabled).
Is there a way to :
    1) Each user only be accessible through a specific port?
    2) Disable SFTP protocol for the admin user?
I've though that it might be possible by running multiple sshd instances, but I doubt that is even possible.

joaocandre wrote:1) Each user only be accessible through a specific port?
This is called "security by obscurity" and doesn't really help anything. It only introduces more vectors for configuration management errors.
    2) Disable SFTP protocol for the admin user?
Same as above, as long as you have root access reachable, it doesn't make sense to disable it in other instances, the attack vector is the same and if the attacker can break one, he can also break the other.
I've though that it might be possible by running multiple sshd instances, but I doubt that is even possible.
This is easily possible and quite common. The use case, however, usually isn't security but something practical - like having sshd listen on other well-known ports to fool some firewalls or proxies or having a backup sshd available when experimenting with the primary one. You can run an ssh daemon as user as well. This would add someting to the security if configured properly.

  • 4g- 8gb Ram increased performance!! (mini server i7)

Ok you guys are all rolling your eyes but hear me out. I have the miniserever quad and i run Final CutX, Motion, Logic (with EastWest, StudioDevil, Antares plugins) and this thing screams with 4gb. But...motion really chops that memory up fast, as does FCX, and Superior Drummer. I had to close all other apps and it still those guys ate 4gb. So I upgraded to the maximum 8gb.
Here's the thing...everything got faster even when ram was not maxed out!
Final Cut and Motion open in half the time now. Everything is faster and more responsive. Logic loads programs in a snap (minus the 64bit au bug). Now, I've never noticed a difference like this. Never. And I've always upgraded parts and pieces and op systems when available. Does anybody know anything about this? Why would changing ram speed up processes that do not max out ram? Maybe Crucial ram is superior to the Samsung ram that ships in the unit. From now on, I'm maxing out all new computers immediately! Maybe it's a Grand Central Dispatch thing. Anyway, I could not be happier with a 55$ upgrade. It feels like a new computer. Which is great, cause it was only a week old when it was "old".

Thank you.  Appreciate that.  I actually don't use it as a server at all, so I plan to use the server drive as backup to the publications.   I have considered buying the MacProp but when I visited the Southampton UK store two weeks ago, I noticed that the power lead going into the back of the Mac Pro had actually split all the way around leaving the core wires bare albeit for their protective sleeve.  So if that's the quality of the build I thought this is a lot of money for what is a marketing design.  Frankly that design doesn't work because for professional applications we users need something practical - not pretty.
However, the Mac Mini design for us is OK although I don't see the need to design computers as small as they can be. If something goes wrong you need to fix it not have to take a University degree in mechanics and electronics.  Yes the previous G5 style computers were built like tanks, but something in between would suit us professionals.  It doesn't need to fit in a ladies handbag but something of a cube 7 or 8 inches all around would be very practical.  I hope Sir Jonathan reads this!
    Thank you for your help.

  • Looking to buy Touch as a Christmas present...  Have some questions..

    1. Since I don't know if my wife will like it or not, does apple usually have an "exception" to the 14 day return policy (maybe 28 days)? I could buy it at Costco (which has a 90 day), but want to take advantage of the nice Apple gift wrapping.
    2. When Syncing with iCal, do all the calendars come over? (e.g. Home, Work, Kids, etc). I believe the colors don't come over (which is a bummer), but may be ok just as long as all the calendars get on the device.
    3. Is there a way to read Chinese txt files? My sister in law was showing off her iRiver Clix, and how you could upload Chinese ebooks in a txt file.
    4. Reading some of the posts, it appears that you can now enter new calendar entries. Which is cool.. What else can you do in regards to new entry and edits? For example, can you create and edit entries in the Address Book?
    5. Do you have the ability to manage wifi "profiles". So lets say, have one for Home WPA and another for Office WEP. Or is it always scanning for the "best"?
I think the main uses for her would be in the following order: photos, calendar, address book, music, those ebooks, occasional wifi. Very little if any video.
    Thanks!

just to let you know not to give up hope.
In Feb. Apple will release officially a developer kit, opening up new applications for the iTouch and iPhone for Apple and many other 3rd parties. I'm sure Notepad is at the top of the list for this. So i'd still get this, if it's the only reason.
    Also,
"1. Since I don't know if my wife will like it or not, does apple usually have an "exception" to the 14 day return policy (maybe 28 days)? I could buy it at Costco (which has a 90 day), but want to take advantage of the nice Apple gift wrapping."
I'd say go for the Costco, there return policy is much nicer, and then, if i'm wrong about the notepad application, you can still take it back Gift wrap is a nice touch, but rather do something practical like the return policy.

  • I/O drive upgrade kit - X-fi xtreme gamer

Hello I bought a?set of headphones but I need to get something practical to make life easyer?to connect them when I want to use them. I thought of the I/O upgrade kit but as far as I can tell there isn't one compatible for my Soundcard. I have this one > http://www.soundblaster.com/products...8&product=5854?Thanks.

    Hi,
I'm wondering if it's possible to use an X-Fi I/O dri've from another SKU X-Fi with a Fatalty Xtreme Gamer?
I've plugged it in and it's powered, output digital audio (the light is on, at least) and it detects the headphones being plugged in properly but no sound is coming out.
    Am I doing something wrong?

  • Mac Mini Server i7 2.0 GHz mid 2011

Having recently upgrade two MacBook Pro's with Crucial's SSDs, and today increased the ram to 8GB on the newer MBP - I am now considering replacing the main drive (of two-being a server) with either the Samsung 840 EVO 1TB or the Crucial 1TB which have been successful in the two MBPs.
However, I am somewhat floored by some of the comments on this site re-the Mac Mini server.  Ideally I would like to have put two 8GBs ram sticks to total 16 but I have read in Apple Spec that 8 is the maximum strength!  I have also read that some users have floundered with SSDs in the Mac Mini and are not seemingly compatible.
I realize we may be pushing boundaries here, but as a Publisher the Mac Mini has been very adequate with Quark Xpress 10 and several Adobe applications.  The problem is there is no midway position between the mini and the Mac Pro which is an expensive unit.
Any comments would be appreciated and having used Macs for the last 30 years I'm sorry that Apple hasn't filled a gap in the market with something that isn't exactly upgradeable.  We all can't afford to rush out and buy Mac Pro's and have to make do with the tools we have.
Yes, we also have a 21" iMac but they're not upgradeable at all when we have to use as a minimum the Thunderbolt displays.

  • So much fun!!!

I just had the best time that I have had with something practical in Java. I wasplaying around with a multiple table header code written by Nobuo Tamemasa which was written in 1.0 and found a post by BobW1 and Alderaan that fixed up a couple of changes required for it to work on 1.4. and it worked awesome. So if any of you guys still cruise through here at all, I just wanted to say thanks for your posts. And Nobuo Tamemasa thanks for making you code available to all, your skills are exceptional!!!!

  • Reading suggestions to determine necessary equipment

    Hello,
Our teacher assigned a case project to us in the CCNA curriculum, essentially to get us to think and put something practical together.  At this point, I have the network requirements setup in a lab environment; however, selection of equipment is an aspect we have not touched on (and probably won't).  We are allowed to use material outside of the CCNA curriculum and I have done so (ex. HSRP, VOIP, SLAs, EtherChannel, 802.1x, Linux/MS servers).
What I am looking for are some resources that I can read or learn from to determine what hardware is necessary / realistic to use in a given environment.  I haven't mentioned what the scope of the network is or what requirements we have since I want to learn it, not ask someone to do it for me.
For example, while I can compare switch models, I would like to know specifics on what each can realistically handle.
    Thank you in advance!

    Thank you for the response.
I believe I know most of the answers to the above questions, unless I should decide to change my mind on something.
Let's say for example that I know how many switches I need at the access layer and what would be capable there, but am not sure how many (or how powerful) of disribution layer switches I need to support a decent quantity of users.
I know the feature sets I need and have a list of switches that support those features.
I know how much bandwidth to expect on that layer.
There are different levels per-se of these devices, however.
Some of what I don't know is::
How concerned I should be with things such as switching speed and other details that I do not see described online.
If a switch supports 48GB/s of throughput (not 48 1GB ports, I know there's a difference), how do I know how much data can actually be thrown at it consistently.
Those are examples of what I would like to get a better handle on.
I don't want to do this ,just to get a grade -- I want to get as much out of it as I can.
    Thank you again.

  • Email links out of Practice Fusion are not active (as they are in IE), which they say is a problem with "something lost in the communication between the Flash engine and the browser". Does anyone have experience with this?

This is a medical records system, cloud based. I use Firefox to get into the system, but any browser would work. Other than this problem, Firefox works fine (better than IE, in my opinion).
Patient demographics include their email, which is hyperlinked and should go right to Outlook (my default email program). This works in IE, but nothing happens on the click when using Firefox as the browser.
I queried Practice Fusion, which replied: In regards to your previous question about the email hyperlink in the patient information, it looks this is not something that can be fixed on our end right now. It is the web browsers' responsibility to handle these types of links, and there seems to be something lost in the communication between the Flash engine and the browser. I apologize for any inconvenience.
Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

  • Cp6 - Something broke! A "lifesaver" best practice reminder!

First, I should point out a very important best practice of saving your projects often and save your Captivate projects as a new name each time.
e.g. project_01, project_02, etc. (or some other variation that makes sense to you)
    Case in point…
Just a while ago, my Captivate project became corrupted for unknown reasons. I last experienced this problem in Cp4 so this is a disappointing reminder that Cp6 may also be vulnerable to file corruption.
Everything seems fine. All the slides seem perfect but this particular project now fails on my two computers.
    The symptom:
Now, I can no longer run in preview mode (F4 or otherwise). When I select preview, the Captivate preview window hangs for a very long time (slide 1/37 – just a grey screen). If I attempt to click anywhere within the preview window, I will see “Preview (Not Responding)”
If I wait about 5 minutes, the preview will actually start, however, it is very unresponsive… so clicking the NEXT button (I don’t use the slidebar ** name?) requires nearly 5 minutes to view the next slide.
The only way out of this mess is to let Captivate crash.
This repeats when I restart with the same file. In other words, the project is toast.
While really, really, annoying... all is not lost! Because I change my project name with every save (I anticipated this unfortunately inevitable moment), I now going to open an older (by 1/2 h) project and continue.
    - Shawn

    Hello Rod,
I am unsure what you are disagreeing with? I fully understand the legacy of Captivate as I've been there every step. I am unsure why you brought that up.
I think you are misunderstanding or I have not explained this issue well enough.
This course was developed entirely in Cp6. I have not done a significant amount of testing throughout development... basically building new slides each day.
Anyhow, when I ran a rare test earlier today, I was shocked to notice the course was unresponsive; taking nearly five minutes before the first slide would show. Naturally I thought corruption. But through hiding slides and publishing older  saved project revisions, I noticed a disturbing trend that project responsiveness. For instance, clicking the navigation buttons went from instantaneous down to just over five seconds per click as test through the published versions.
Curiously, the following remain unaffected (responsive throughout all revisions):
    - Custom TOC button (a custom/advanced conditional action - if cpCmndTOCVisible = 0 or 1....)
    - Effects
Everything else has become quite unresponsive (or gradually more unresponsive through the revisions):
    - BACK/NEXT buttons,
    - HELP button (a Jump to Slide x action)
    - Timeline events within a slide
If this was a problem with preferences, I should not be able to solve the problem by publishing earlier versions or even hiding slides in the most recent revision. Additionally, I should not see this same issue on three different systems.
But because I am willing to try anything, I cleared out the preferences and restarted Captivate and believe me, I am really disappointed to report that it did not help.
Please understand, I am not necessarily blaming Captivate... as it could very well be something I have done that has simply made responsiveness worse as I added more slides. Figuring out what that is could be a huge challenge. :-(

  • Connection practically freezes when anyone views a video/downloads something

Hi, I have a WRT54g (or gs, I'm not at home so I can't confirm).
I have two computers hooked up to the router, wired connection, wireless is turned off.  Whenever anyone looks up a video like youtube, opens a graphics-intensive webpage, or downloads anything, the connection practically freezes.
I can't even get a google webpage to load on my computer if the other computer is buffering a video.
I had an older linksys router that used to run flawlessly for years... but one day it suddenly had this problem... out of the blue.  I thought I could fix it by getting a new router but the new router has the same problem.
Everyone I mention this to says that a 3rd party firmware fixes this, but my old router is unsupported by any firmware, and this router is a Version 7, which no 3rd party firmware supports either.
When hooked up directly to the cable modem, this problem does not occur.
Is there any solution to this problem that doesn't involve 3rd party firmware?  None of the routers for sale anymore are less than version 7 so relying on non-Linksys firmware help won't help me here.  There has to be *something* I can do to stop this paralyzing lag.

In you routers set up go to the advanced tab and change your beacon interval to 50 and the RTS and Fragmentation Thresholds to 2304 and see if that makes a difference.
