Something that really bugs me about Safari...

I am a teacher and i connect my projector to my Macbook Pro most of the time. But i dont want to leave it turned on all the time, and i dont like a having a low resolution screen most of the time so i keep the windows split as an alternate monitor. That is, "not mirrored". It really annoys me that Safari always opens into the alternate window, the projector, when the projector is turned off. I have to turn the projector on just to find the Safari windows, or i have to switch to mirrored/low resolution to use it. As soon as switch to mirrored/low resolution i can grab the window, but as soon as i switch back to not mirrored Safari puts the windows into the alternate monitor.
There should be a preferences switch to control where it opens windows.

If this is a brand new computer, you often need to get a full cycle or two on the battery for it to "program" itself to properly read and display power levels.
A rash of recent reports of short battery charge life, overheating, and general sluggishness has been traced to Parallels emulation software for running Windows on the Mac. It usually shows up right after you update to Mac OS 10.6.8.

Something That May Be Interesting About The Yellow Screen Issue

I was comparing my 3G and 3GS and have also been experimenting with looking at the color of the 3GS in different lighting environments. There was one situation where it appeared to be a little yellowish or warmer than the 3G, but mainly it is just not as bright as the 3G.
I compared them again this morning and the 3G seemed much brighter. Both had brightness set to about half way and auto brightness was set to on (on both phones). I decided to set the auto brightness to off (on both phones), and noticed that the 3G display dimmed and the 3GS display brightened. Now they look so close to identical that I can't really tell the difference between them at all.
I have noticed that a lot of folks seem to be having this issue and would like to ask that if you are having this issue... Please do a similar comparison and post your observations in this thread.
I notice that the display on these phones change in different kinds of light, and have read that the 3GS now has auto white balance, so maybe it has something to do with this.
I am not saying that this is the problem, but just something that I have observed over the pas couple of days.

I've noticed this as well. I posted a thread about it but got very little response. So I'm not sure if were experiencing an isolated issue or if it just doesn't bother anyone else. I'm planning on taking my phone in to a genius soon for the weird tri-tone & other alerts problem & was going to also ask about the screen then. My screen NEVER appears yellow, but it is so dark & dreary when compared to my 3G both using the same settings.
If you want to see something stranger, go into a completely dark room, like a hall bathroom, unlock & open both phones, notice the brightness (both phones set to auto-brightness). Next turn on the light & watch both phones brighten up, this is one of the very FEW times my 3GS actually has what I feel is a proper brightness level. Unfortunately it goes away once you lock the phone again. It would be great if this was fixed with a software update, but what if it's a phone problem & were past the 15 days? I'm going to take my old phone & compare to the other 3GS in the Apple store.

Keychain-I did something that really screwed things up-HELP!!!

I was organizing some files the other night and at some point got a Keychain message to quit or delete or something. Anyway I'm not quite sure what I did but now I don't have access to change certain things, entire files are missing or buried somewhere, and I have a "Network" icon in my sidebar that was never there before-and incidentally that is where all of my files now are. I'm the ony one using my computer so no one else has messed with it. All I want to do is put things back the way they were. What did I do and how do I undo it?

It’s only fair that if Apple is going to integrate Mail into Mac PCs, it would be nice if the system does it for you like Office or perhaps Outlook. I just don’t to use Outlook although I have it installed and ready to use, but instead use Mail which comes with Mac OS already.

I spoke with them for 2 months but nothing happened, they just told me, it' not our problem.
Because of this speech, i sued them on June 2011... Last week, i won the case but just for the return of invoince... It costs 3.200 Turkish Liras (1.800$) and there's no 24" iMac unused... Bilkom again refused to give me an iMac... I thought that Apple's customer satisfaction can't be like this... I didn't write anything to Apple till now but if i can't get an iMac, i must return to normal PC after 2 years... And i don't want that... I offered an iMac 27" with core i7... No matter Bilkom accepts or not, they don't care of me... I'm a customer, they should do... I've never seen such a like company. I hope the real Apple will help my problem and save me from Bilkom...

Hello, If you are dealing with one of the really thin iMac's that have no superdrive, then the superdrive icon should not appear on the desktop when you plug it in, but when you put in a disk (CD, DVD, etc.) that should appear. If you go into disk utility, and look at superdrive, that should be clickable and not grayed out when you have it plugged in. If this does not show up in disk utility, go to Apple, and ask to speak to their supervisor, speaking to a customer service agent is like talking to a potato, nothing gets done. Good Luck!

Good catch! Yes there was a time when many companies and other organizations did that sort of thing. Now not so much.

You might also check around, there might be after school programs, sometimes the YMCA or Boys & Girls Clubs have programs.

I was a kid when I made a documentary for a school project. I've been trying to figure out how to retrieve the file. 4 years ago, I was able to get the files off the Iomega Zip drive (finally), but I now see the file is saved as a .A4P. There is also a file saved as a .PKG as well, but I don't know how to open this with my Windows 8 COmputer.

.a4p is an Authorware v.4 (Windows) project.
Interesting you have it as a .pkg...usually that's a published-on-a- Mac extension, if I recall.
At any rate, can you put the file up on a Box, Dropbox, FTP, etc...and send me a URL?
I should be able to published it so you can view the project (it would be an .exe).
It can't be converted to anything though - not without manual effort.

When in Safari, when I visit such websites as Moshi Monsters or Webkinz, I find that I can't type out messages or anything in the website. Can anyone tell me if there's something that can be done so that I can?

I had issues in 10.4.7 as well as 10.4.8.
My problems occurred at the beginning of 10.4.8, then many users brought light to me using WEP, which was not working that great. I changed my connections to WPA2 and my problem has disappeared. If my problem didn't resolve the way it did, I would have mentioned it the next time I visited an apple store.
The bottom line is that assumptions, complaining, and self diagnostics don't get many people very far and bringing the problem to apple helps them know the incidence of this problem, and helps them develop a reliable solution.
Though some users have reported the "cold shoulder" when reporting Airport problems to apple... I hope you weren't one of them.

Tthe thing is when i just went to go manually start dowmloading a few of the songs that i knew i already bought , itunes is making me pay forthem again. I think or thought it might have something to do with the fact that i just changed my apple id name right before i got my new phine but my apps all re-downloaded (manually-no syncing) without making me pay for them again. i dont want to have to purchase allllll my songs again. No it's not stealing. They have an allowance that you can share with so many computers/devices. You'll have to authorize her computer to play/use anything bought on your acct. You can do this under the Store menu at top when iTunes is open on her computer.
As far as getting it all on her computer....I think but I am not sure (because I don't use the feature) but I think if you turn on Home Sharing in iTunes it may copy the music to her computer. I don't know maybe it just streams it. If nothing else you can sign into your acct on her computer and download it all to her computer from the cloud. Not sure exactly how to go about that, I haven't had to do that yet. I wonder if once you authorize her computer and then set it up for automatic downloads (under Edit>Preferences>Store) if everything would download. Sorry I'm not much help on that.

I could not log in to this Support Community with my UPDATED Apple ID (and this is another issue I can't believe Apple just says "NO, you CAN'T!" - deleting other (old) Apple IDs we've created by mistake or a long time ago and being able to have it all on ONE SINGLE UPDATED Apple ID - ALSO saving Apple's storage servers, etc.).

So, really. Of course a lot of people don't care about the iDisk issue. That's fine, we all love and hate specific apps or software.. But why has Apple just shut it down, since it was so EASY to use (as DropBox) on all our Apple devices?!! So, we really can't upload/store any kind of files anymore and that's it?!
I used iDisk when MobileMe was still alive, and it was great to have my files from work, home, any backup (whatever we want) uploaded and synced and used in our Macs, iPhones and iPads. If we have the OPTION of an iCloud Plan (the top one, for example), but we just don't like the automatick backups for the iPhones and iPads, nor the Pictures' sync function.. Why can't we just have the SAME simple and efficient/great service of the iDisk installed in each device?!
Do we really have to go back and downgrade back to the free iCloud Option (just for keeping the e-mail) and paying extra for DropBox, Google, Microsoft, any other services?! I have nothing against them - I actually have DropBox and it works great because it REMINDS me of iDisk!! But WHY NOT just keep it simple and closed with 1 company/platform/option - Apple's iOS, OSX, etc.

That's exactly what I was afraid of...
During all the time I have been a loyal customer of Apple's products and services, these have been the only 2 issues that I really can't understand (specially when we look at Apple's strategies and management)...
1) Not being able to DELETE (simply delete or deactivate) old or duplicated Apple IDs... I have 3 different Apple IDs but only one is the real Apple ID I use for everything, with all my purchases and services (such as e-mail) related to it (Why won't Apple jus let people delet, deactivate or - at least - merge Apple IDs?! That would help everyone, including Apple when we think about costs, storage, database maintenance, etc.) - Actually, even when I gave up on trying to delete other Apple IDs, I tried to have the one I really use and have organized to use my @me.com address as the Apple ID itself (as Apple asks us to do - and makes sense, of course). But never worked. Just because I created that Apple ID with a @hotmail.com account (since it asks for a valid e-mail when you create an Apple ID, it NEVER lets me now change my Apple ID to my @me.com e-mail address - I mean JUST having my @me.com e-mail address as my primary e-mail and my Apple ID (for example, having that old @hotmail.com e-mail address out of it, cleaned..)!
2) The other issue was this one, about iDisk. Of course there must be reasons for having it shut down, maybe the apps used by iPhone and iPad, along with the folder on Mac OSX, is way too complicated, expensive, full of bugs, I don't know. But if we decide to pay for 50GB of online storage, why even THINK about different options for files we use?! I have Dropbox, I've read about Google Drive and Microsoft SkyDrive, etc. But I just wanted to STICK with a single ALL-APPLE solution.. That is.. Pay the annual fee for the 50GB and just still keep any file I want on the cloud with iDisk. So, what Apple tells me is that if I have other files than iWork or PDF (and some few exceptions), I should actually downgrade to "free" iCloud and decide to PAY for another solution (organization), such as DropBox, Google Disk or Drive (I don't really know), Micrsoft's SkyDrive..
Of course there's the strategy of getting more and more people to use Pages, Numbers and Keynote (buying them for iOS and Mac OSX, as I already have and love them). But "killing" iDisk and just telling users to look for other storage solutions doesn't really sound like Apple.
I have seen so many questions here about both issues (deleting or merging Apple IDS + iDisk back since we pay for storage) that I really believe Apple should reconsider these issues or, at least, open the issue and let us know what would be the best "partner solution" for iCloud...

sigh...this is quite idiotic, but I have found a solution. It was quite simple, really, and yet quite idiotic. I share it for all those reading so that, if you know of anyone else that did what i did, you can easily be the "hero" in their lives.
After a continued search via youtube or what have you for any possible solutions, I kept coming back to the fact that I was told by my computer that I didn't have "permission" to do the file deletion. I stumbled upon a youtube video that talked about "unlocking", "locking", certain files and what not.
Long story short, the reason why I couldn't do anything to the files that were on my desktop was due to my "locking" the desktop folder. I must have done this a while back not knowing what I was doing nor the ramifications of clicking a simple box.
I undid this by:
Opening Up Finder
then, going to MacHD --> Users --> My Account Folder
clicking on Desktop Folder, I "cmd+I"
I then, unclicked the "locked" option
I went down to the cog/settings and selected "Apply to enclosed items"
resulting then in having all my files on my desktop free accessiblity and delete-ability....
oi...at least I now know what "locking" a folder (even the desktop folder) can do to other files held within it

OOP And AS 3.0, Something That Confuses Me ALOT!

Hello everybody, there's something that's been on my mind for quiet a while now, and everytime I think about I get confused even more lol. Anyway, this might sound stupid to most of you but I donno, I just don't get it.
There are many flash developers out there who are building flash applications using OOP, some of them provide their scripts for download and that's good. The problem is that when I download those files, I have no idea how to incorporate them into my project. The files usually contain the fla, the swf, class files inside a package, and the document class. All of this looks nice but the confusing part is how to use it in my project! I have some questions and hopefully when they're answered I won't be confused anymore:
1. Suppose I downloaded two different applications, each has its own classes and its own document class. I customized them to my liking and everything and now it's time to use BOTH of them in my project. How am I supposed to use both document classes in one? Do I make my own document class, import the classes of both projects to it, then copy the codes of the document classes into mine? Or is there some other way of doing it?
2. Can I use OOP and timeline code in the same project? Like some big application could be used in the project using the OOP/Classes approach, while other simple stuff like navigation could be coded in the timeline. But usually isn't the document class a replacement for the main timeline of my flash file? Hmmm confused as you can see...
That's all I could think of for now... I would appreciate anyone that answers these questions for me because this confusion is really bothering me... Thanks in advance

Technical books by nature are disconnected in many ways from realities of every day tasks. It is especially true, in my view, in Flash/ActionScript. In many case authors treat Flash development the same way they would relate to an enterprise level application. Many authors come not from design but development background in other stronger languages (Java, C++, etc.) and computer science. This is, actually, great for it is about time Flash/ActionScript gets a status of a “serious” development tool.
Nevertheless, I see Flash development as a very special set of skills and, in some instances, as something that needs an artistic talent and imagination as prerequisite. In a lot of cases Java/C++, etc. developers, no matter how genius they are, just cannot hold entire picture together. Flash developer must be able to coordinate sometimes humongous amount of use cases and forks in order to implement the final vision. As a visual result oriented process, Flash development deviates toward immediate practical needs more than in the direction of satisfying abstract programming concepts and may legitimately go against conventional structure because structure is getting in the way.
One of the important aspects of products developed in Flash that is often overlooked is that they must be very lean. Even with advances in bandwidth application loading speed and financial implications are still tangible. I saw many awesome, smartly and correctly architected cool looking Flash applications that resulted in huge multi-MB blobs that run their appeal to the ground for a single reason of slow loading.
Another thing that often makes little sense is design patterns. Don’t take me wrong – I got very useful ideas how to structure my applications from design pattern concepts. But what really annoys me is when design patterns become the goal – not a tool. I see this propaganda for DP went as far as making novices in AS to attempt learning patterns and custom frameworks before getting a clear idea of how to add event listener to a button. This is totally detrimental to learning and creativity IMHO. I hope you will not fall into this pitfall. Just for the safety reasons, though, you just should learn how to say “Design patterns are invaluable” with a wide smile because odds are huge you will encounter a militant interviewer who will kill your chances because you were not fast enough to scream “MVC!” This is a trade off of dealing with unimaginative programming dictators who made career by repackaging someone else’s ideas and convincing CTOs that JSON and JQERY are the best inventions after beer.
I am available, though, to admit that this may be my combative ignorance talking and in a year I might post a Mao Zedong quotations book-like proclamation that design patterns are the only way to go. But today I rather sit in the center of Pyongyang in a silent protest against Kim Jong Il’s drinking habits rather than deal with proponents of DP.
So, don’t listen to anyone including me. Just keep in mind that some humans like to drink warm vodka.
There is another brainwash that penetrates virgin minds. People say that if you use timeline – it is not OOP. I think it is a total BS. When one writes code on timeline – he/she declares and instantiates variables and classes, uses functions, etc. – all these things ARE objects. So, why is not it OOP? Who said that only writing classes is OOP?
I am saying that even though I practically don’t use timeline coding any longer - not for political but for purely practical reasons. And yes, a newly awaken geek in me loves cleaning and refactoring my code. We all loose our purity at some point.
OOP is grand and it has proven its usefulness and dominance. But even then one encounters periodically very smartly substantiated cases against OOP in defense of procedural programming. Again, remember diluted ethanol at room temperature preferences.
In other words, as Kennedy said, it is not what I can do for encapsulation but what encapsulation can do for me.
My point is that unless one sincerely internalizes an OOP concept and see its usefulness – one cannot utilize it correctly anyway?
Again, to me encapsulation, for one, is extremely useful and I love to do things in as abstract manner as possible for a single reason – I am lazy and I love to reuse things. But I also want to be in control and I want to have a very clear idea how this staff that I reuse works.
There are applications whose code is worth incorporating into your projects and others that are worth emulating by writing your own code after just looking at what it does as a result for it is easier that repainting Sistine Chapel to the specs. More often than not, reverse engineering takes longer than writing code from scratch. With very few exceptions someone else’s code is not sufficient at best. I hope that it is clearer now that if you use Flash IDE and its compiler – you are better off with a document class. Otherwise, you will need to find another way to start. In case of other compilers you have another way to initialize.

If you use a movie clip only once and code for this mc pertain to this mc only – there is no practical difference between a timeline code inside this mc or writing a class and attach it to mc. But, more often than not, you will discover that several symbols in your library share a lot of functionality. So, if you create a class that combines these commonalities and then extend it – you will end up with a slimmer code as well as with a smaller swf. I like writing classes also because all my code is in one place – not in two - timeline and .as files.
You ARE using OOP approach if one believes anything I say. I suggest you delegate as little as possible to doc class. And yes, you can view doc class as a rightful representative of timeline.
