my ipod has worked fine since i got it in decmeber for christmas
-today when i went to play it in my car the ipod' black screen came up with the apple logo, stayed on for 20 seconds then it went off.
-i have tried to plug it into to my computer but nothig happens, screen dosent turn on, computer dosent reconize it

Ok first of all let me start by saying I'm the most tech illiterate person on the face of the earth. This may have been already posted somewhere, but my complete lack of experience dealing with Mac os operating system may have caused me to completely coast right over it. So please have mercy on this poor lost mac dummy!
Yesterday a software update popped up with several updates listed so I gave them the go ahead to install the latest versions of Itunes, safari, mac os (10.5.8) The update appeared to go smoothly so since it was late I called it a night and let it sleep. To my surprise when I woke it up today I realized that none of my DESKTOP ICONS appeared to be working or responding when I clicked them, and in fact after trying to open itunes and some other frequently used programs the icons changed from their usual selves to a blank *notepad with a ruler and two pencils* (see this is how dumb I am, I don't even know what that silly icon represents) I guess thats the default when items go missing?
After much panicking I somehow managed to open the finder where I checked my 'applications' and 'documents' and was relieved to see that they are all still accessible and operating correctly through the finder, and nothing was gone. Its just that they are no longer usable through their desktop icons. I mean I checked the "desktop" area of the finder and its completely blank.
I'm so lost as to where I go from here and was wondering if someone who knows how the system operates could give me a "dummy" version of how to put them back onto my desktop like they were before the update? and where I went wrong to cause them to go missing in the first place?
Years of 'Windows' operating crashes and painful unintended erases (where i've lost all my data) have made me extremely fearful (and hesitant) of messing with system configurations in general, and although Mac is completely more stable I'm still scared about doing something wrong and erasing everything.
If someone could help me as to what to do next I would be eternally greatful!

We need clarification. When you say Desktop icons do you mean the ones on the Dock? If so, then do the following. Restart and see if that fixes the Dock icons to their original and not the generic application icon (it's a pencil, paint brush, and ruller on two blank pieces of paper) stored in /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/ named the GenericApplicationIcon.icns file. If they don't change, launch Disk Utility, select the boot volume/partition, and repair permissions, restart, and see if that fixes things. If not, then launch the Terminal.app in /Applications/Utilities/ (which is what you see when double-clicking on the root-level disk icon sitting on your Desktop and not the Finder). Select and copy this one-line command, paste it into the Terminal window, hit the return key, quit the Terminal app, OPTION-click and hold the Dock's Finder icon, and select Relaunch:

This will rebuild the LaunchServices database and should restore all the Dock's icons to properly display the apps that they represent.

What's wrong with my 2nd generation ipod touch?

Recently my ipod has been messing up alot. A couple of months ago the sound was not working at all, I couldn't play music, or vidoes, everytime I would press on a song it would just go back to the music menu and it was completely mute. I restored it 5 times and nothing worked, finally I decided to turn it off and on and it worked. Everytime it would die i'd have to keep turning it off and on for it to work. Then one day the sound just stopped again. I tried turning it off and on and nothing. Then i restored it and the sound came back on and everything worked again. Also whenever i plug in my headphones some of the sound still plays through the ipod speakers, and I know it's not my headphone because they work perfectly fine when plugged into anything else. Also everytime I update it, it gets stuck on the connect to itunes menu and I have to restore it. Any suggestions at to why my ipod touch is so messed up? Is anybody else having these weird problems? I haven't dropped it in any water at all and I haven't dropped it in a long time plus it has a cover. Thank you so much.

First of all, as for your sound, based on your description, I am pretty sure your headphone jack is broken and not working. Restoring your iPod Touch and rebooted it only fixes the technical issues and not the hardware issues. Sounds like some sort of damage internally on your iPod Touch. Take it to your closes Apple store and let them take a look at it. I suggest that this is your best bet because your OS (operating system) on your iPod cannot work with your hardware issues.

What's wrong with videos in the iPod touch?

Videos added to my iPod touch won't show up in iTunes. Thus, not only can I not know what videos I have from iTunes but, because of this, the only way to delete videos is from the iPod touch.
I have a word around where I can create a playlist and put all my videos there. Unfortunately, I still can't delete them from iTunes because that will only remove them from the playlist.
Finally, I'm afraid to modify any tag information for my videos. It takes an unacceptably long time for the information to update and you can corrupt your video if you cancel it with the stop button on the progress dialog. Seriously, it takes about as long as the video to update the tag of a video. So, an hour long video can take an hour to update the tag information.
I've done a search and, so far, no one has described this strange behaviour. Do I just have a defective iPod touch?

No, I haven't. If simply adding videos to my iPod is so buggy, I'm afraid at what a complicated procedure like synching might do. I feel like the iPod is so delicate that any unexpected input will corrupt it irrevocably. I've already had to reset it due to data corruption (which wasn't fun)...
If the device can't deal with manually added videos, why do they let us? Why not force us to synch like with photos? It's tempting to try to return it except that this can't be anything other than a software problem and no one else seems to have this issue. Am I the only person on Earth who doesn't sync? It's interesting that you automatically assumed that I was doing so. So much so that you interpreted my post as describing some form of synching, as if there was no other way to use one's iPod.
I'm fairly disappointed in this infernal device...

What is wrong with "Safari" on the iPod Touch?

Safari closes and my iPod Touch goes back to home on an awful lot of sites I like to visit while the page is loading.Why can Safari deal with sites I navigate to and "Safari" on the Touch cannot? Obviously they are not as much the same as touted.
Is anyone else finding this to be an issue? I cannot even load these support pages without it aborting. Here is another site I go to that aborts: www.worldofwarcraft.com
Why is this happening? I have tried everything from clearing history/cookies to a complete reset of the thing.

no support for real player or windows media streaming - eg. can't listen to radio
web pages not retained for long - annoying if web-app (eg. games) loaded that don't need Internet anymore
only 8 open web pages allowed - why?
no autocomplete of urls (would save typing) - can use history though but extra step

Somethings wrong with my Motherboard

I have an emachines W3080. I got a new case and put the motherboard in it, everything right, except I forgot studs. I took it to a computer store and they ran it without studs in, cuz i forgot about them. When he jumpstarted, it would work, he said i needed new motherboard and CPU. So now I'm over at my computer literate cousins house, and we're stumped. We've troubleshooted by taking everything out of case. Motherboard out, put on cardboard shoebox. Started without anything. When we get the 2 mobo power things, the one with lots of prings and the box one with the CPU and the heatsink, we used to get continous long beeps about 2 seconds long until we shutted off That was with mobo power cpu and heatsink along with Video card and RAM. Now we get no beep, and nothing shows up on the monitor. we're dumbstruck. Whats wrong?

Somethings wrong with ARD 3.1 on Intel Powerbook

I have ARD 3.1 installed on a Intel Powerbook for when I travel and on a Desktop G5.
Everything works great on G5. ARD displays name, current status (eg offline, idle, available) current apps get displayed, current users are displayed, IP addresses are correct, the OSX version is displayed (not 10.4.10 appears as 10.4.9) and ARD version shows 3.1. I was able to update 2.2 clients to 3.1 clients with the G5 but not using the Powerbook.
However, on the Powerbook, ARD displays name, but current status just says VNC On, the IPs are displayed correctly but everything else shows up as -
It definitely appears that there is a problem with the Powerbook. I tried trashing the app and reinstalling but nothing changed.
Any ideas? How do I trash ARD on the laptop so I can do a clean install?

Not sure what your set-up looks like, but I was having similar trouble with "VNC On" where my Mac was not seeing another Mac as an ARD client. Each Mac was behind its own firewall. The solution, in this case at least, was to have port mapping on BOTH ends...on the client and admin Macs. Problem solved. Originally, I only had it on the client end. Hope that helps.

My friend cannot hear my voice when im speaking and i cant heard them too , I only can heard them speaking while i using the loudspeaker. Whats the probem with that ? Is that an audio ic issue ?

I connect my Ipod to my computer and my computer recognizes my ipod
but when I connect my camera to my computer it doesn't show up anywhere but i know it connects because on my camera it says PC.

Check the instructions for connecting your camera to a computer. Also launch iPhoto and in the iPhoto Preferences>General you can select what you want to happen when your connect a camera.

When i click on new project most of the icons are not visible at all, and the ones that are do not have an icon picture(but work). i was watching some of the tutorials, and when the guy clicks on new project the are icons like Loops and acoustic recording. mine's the latest version and it doesn't have any of those.... please help because i cant do anything with it at the moment. thanks.

i take my ipod from my pocket and all of a sudden i see this thing on my screen. i took a picture of it on my phone cause i cant explain it. i didnt drop it, step on it or nothin i just took it out of my pocket. it still plays its just the picture. im trying to avoid to paying alot of money to get it fixed. if anyone knoes how i can fix this plz let me know how.

the diagnostic mode in on the ipod. to open it do the following:
1) Restart your ipod by pressing and holding the centre button and "Menu"
2) The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Now press and hold "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode.
3) Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode.
To exit Diagnostic Mode you will have to restart it again by pressing and holding the centre button and "Menu"

Go to System Preferences...>Universal Access>Seeing>Display: Make sure Black on White is checked and Use grayscale is not checked. The keyboard combination of (Apple + Option + Control + 8) will also work.
Your screen shot makes me doubt my recommendation but it is worth a try.

Just recently it wouldnt let me place a picture onto a blank file and when it wont let me add a new layer or change the opacity or anything like that how can i fix it?

I doubt if it could be something related to PSE preferences. You can try holding down Ctrl + Alt + Shift while launching Editor. It will ask if you want to reset preferences. Click Yes and proceed. See if it hepls.

Calm down, it's the iTunes sharing feature.
Are you in a dorm, perhaps? That would mean you are all on the same IP subnet, and can share iTunes.
If you don't like it, turn it off in Edit > Preferences.
But...ask yourself... does ahmir thompson have any good music?
It's not necessarily a BAD thing.
And you can share yours, too. (unprotected-only files)
