(Sometimes) can't type password at login

I am currently having a very similar problem to the one "Nurlin" posted. I just upgraded to Tiger (v10.4.6) and added 512MB of Ram to my 800MHZ, 15-inch flat screen imac.
When I startup, I get a login screen with my user name and a box to type my password. Problem is, I can't type anything. I CAN use the keyboard to open/close the disk drive and adjust volume and screen brightness with the function keys. The mouse also tracks normally.
The only fix I have found is to force the computer to power off by holding down the power button and then to restart. Doing this once or twice always provides a functional login screen and everything works normally.
Here are the things I've tried so far:
1.Booting from the installation disk and using disk utility to repair the disk and the permissions.
2.Changing my login password
3.Dumping the startup preference files
4.Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
None of these things has had any effect. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi James,
I'd love to see this, but you are a bit far away for a housecall.
So... sometimes it works normally, but never the first time? Eventually it is OK though? And once it's OK, it's completely OK: no follow on problems?
Does the startup process look normal otherwise when it fails - ie., there's no signal that any particular startup process will fail or work?
Mouse is OK: So you can click sleep, shutdown, etc? Can you click in the password box? Does doing that give you an insertion point? Does pressing Shift or Caps Lock give you an up-arrow icon in the password box?
Three things to try:
* Boot in Safe Mode -- hold the shift key when you startup and keep it down until the login window appears. Does the keyboard work correctly and consistently or not? If it works and you can type the password, do it, then press the shift key again and click Login. Keep the shift key down until the desktop appears. Then reboot normally and test. (Since Safe Boot invalidates some boot-time caches and forces them to be recreated at the next normal boot, it's possible that the process could fix a problem.)
* In System Preferences > Accounts, click the lock icon to authenticate, then Login Options. Check off "Automatically log in as" and choose the account you are having problems with. Reboot a few times. Do you experience any keyboard problems?
* Create a new user in System Preferences > Accounts. Try selecting that user at boot time. Same problem or does the keyboard work correctly and cnsistently?
Good luck,
John

  • Lion Stuck at login screen, can't type password

My OSX Lion stuck at login screen, when I type password it just "beep" and I can only type few words.I just had those problem before..But since the battery ran out,and I gonna login...then I can't type the password...please help me....
P.S. My keyboard and trackpad is not working before,my keyboard can't type and my trackpadcan only do right click..

What year and model of MacBook Pro do you have?  I'm wondering if the factory installed battery is failing due to age or use.  A MacBook Pro battery can be recharged about 300 times before it becomes unuseable.  Is this possibly the problem?
    Hope this helps

  • Can only type password after long waiting time

When starting my MBP I cannot type anything or click with my mouse until the login screen changes to enable shutdown etc by itself. Anyone with similar experiences and/or solutions?
After booting, which actually takes a couple of minutes I cannot type my password (neither with external USB keyboard) or do anything at all at the log in screen. I can see the mouse cursor and move it (trackpad and magic mouse), but am unable to click anything. I need to wait for another couple of minutes until the screen changes and allows for restart, sleep and shutdown before I can click and type anything.
In this way starting up my MBP takes ages and any advice would be more than welcome.

Are you doing this via the Finder, or the TM "Star Wars" interface?...
I'm finding the same problem in the TM "Star Wars" interface. In earlier versions of 10.5.8 I was able to complete this task, but not in the current one, Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L30)
The preferences file may be corrupt. Try a "full reset" per #A4 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
Is this going to be addressed in an upcoming release of 10.5?
It's very unlikely there will be any more updates to Leopard.

  • Yosemite Mac unable to type password at login?

    Hi guys,
I updated to Yosemite two days ago, and today it has started giving me issues. Twice today I had to forcibly shut it down at the login page because it would not allow me to login. I have looked at the other posts on this site, and my laptop is not having the same problem. For most other people, the issue is that it takes too long to actually get in the computer, but my problem is that I am unable to even type my password. For some letters that I press that are not in my password, and for numbers too, they register. But for ones that are in my password, it won't register and the laptop makes the sound it makes when one issues a nonexistent command.
Do you guys have any idea what's going on with my laptop?
    Much thanks,
    Luckiicloverxx

Sounds like a hosed installation. Best bet is to boot with the Snow Leopard install disc and reinstall. If successful, then try the update again.

  • Can't sign in (user id); keyboard has keys that do not work (can't type password)

After about 20 days of inactivity, I went so sign in to my MacBook.  I selected my user id, and the password box comes up.  I cannot type in my password, because it contains the key "M".  "M" is no longer working on my keyboard.  So I am not sure if the keyboard or the actual user id is the problem.
    Any ideas?

  • PI2.1:invalid cli credentials for password only login devices

    Hi,
We've got in trouble with a LMS to PI Migration maybe because the target devices are configured for Telnet
with a password only Login in place of the the common username Password Login Dialog in this Network.
LMS seams to can handle a Password only Login CLI Dialog with all of the devices but Prime Infrastructure claims "invalid cli credentials" for most devices but it seams to work with a lower part of the devices.
What can we do that PI can handle CLI login with Password only Dialog for all devices? Customer dont want to reconfiger the Network devices for username Password Login.

    Hi Afroy,
Thx for your reply. Its not a question of wrong credentials. I tested exevry thing from ade+ commandline. I used a converted csv-export from LMS (where all devices was working). The problem is PI only related:
    all devices in question are:
    - SNMP reachable, because green check mark in device work center, but name and type is empty despite SNMP discovered infos and OID + name is written into the discovery=>reachable log if I try to discover this devices
    - unmanaged, because claiming "wrong cli credential"
    - ifm_inventory.log has some following dissent for all this devices:
    postCollection() ... Cache status: false.
Error logging - Device <ip> Updated Successfully
delete and re-add this devices brings no improvement.

  • I can't type in the fields sometime, example - login fields. Various sites, no pattern

I can't type in fill-in fields from time to time, example - login/password fields, google search field. The issue is not connected to particular sites, in fact on one and the same site I sometimes can enter login name and next time it stays blank and does not accept any text; at the same page I might be able to type in one field but fail in another. I can at the same time try to connect to the same site with Safari and type in the same fields without a problem.

I am having this exact same problem too. I am using the latest version of Firefox for Android. I am on a cheapo D2 Pad running Android 4.0.4. I have the ability to type in the web address field. But nothing can be typed into any text input field on a webpage. I tried your suggestion about disabling the "dont keep activities" setting - nope - didn't help. Any other suggestions... or am I just pretty much screwed from being able to use firefox on this device...

  • SOS!!! can not type username/password with heart symbol () to login with keyboard.

My child accidentally added heart symbol (♥) in username, and now I can not login into my macbook air as I can not type the ♥ symbol with keyboard. apple tech service said no such experience before.

If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise*, boot into Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. In the window that opens, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Close the Terminal window to get it out of the way.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.
*Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead these instructions.

Hello Pete from another old guy,
It sounds like you have an older iMac than the 2006 and newer model this forum covers. The problem is that, in 2006, Apple changed from PowerPC to Intel processors and third-party developers soon stopped making new software for the older processors. That's why you cannot upgrade Flash player--the current version requires a Mac the "2006 and later" processor.
However, not having a current version of FlashPlayer should not affect your ability to download. If you try downloading, do you get an error message or does something else happen?
Do you have another web browser like FireFox or Camino on your computer?
but would love to get my MAC back up to date and running right.
Well, "running right" may be doable but "up to date" may not be. You are already at as high a Mac OS level that a pre-2006 Mac can use.  We need to pin down your variant to make recommendations. From your Apple menu at the left end of the menu bar, do "About this Mac":
    That brings up this window:
Let us know what yours say for "processor." The two choices are "PowerPC" as in the example, or "Intel." If you  have an Intel processor, you have more options available.
    Awaiting your report,
    Allan

when login screen appears my keybord doesn't work so i can't type my username and password on my macbook

I had my meeting with the Genius bar tech support. He reviewed all of the Apple Care history I have accumultaed over the last 4 weeks.  He looked at my system and couldnt find any software issues.  That led him to speculate it may be a hardware issue. After explaining that I spent over $5000 for my complete set up, I would not be happy with a repair on a brand new unit.  He spoke to store manager and they agreed to replace the defective MBP.
I have completed my migration using Set Up Assistant and ethernet connection from old MBP to new MBP and it went smoothly.  I migrated 324Gb in under 4 hours! Over night I created a complete backup using Time Capsule; again with an ethernet connection, and it took under 7 hours.
    Everything is operating as normal.
Hopefully, this issue is behind me.

I spilled water on my laptop and my "i", "j" and "k" letters don't work on my laptop. However my main problem is that my password contains an "i" so i am locked out of my computer. Any ideas how I can get around the password and login. I tried the method where you go into single user mode and type in commands, however that method uses some of the letters that are not working on my laptop.

You didn't mention which version of OS X your running but there are password reset utilities provided OS X: Changing or resetting an account password (Snow Leopard and earlier) - Apple Support  or  OS X: Changing or resetting an account password - Apple Support
Alternately you can use an external keyboard to log in and change the password. Make a backup if you don't have one, it's likely that your problems aren't over. If that water continues to migrate downward and fries the logic board your macbook will be toast.

  • Unable to type in the "login" keychain password

When I switch on my iMac G5 I am asked for my keychain password: but I can't type in the space provided. I can still use the computer normally, e-mail, internet etc. are all unaffected but the pop-up box asking for the keychain password won't go away, (and won't allow me to type in the password).
The message I get is, "com.apple.internetaccounts.xpc wants to use the "login" keychain"

Only thing that got me around this was a clean install of Mavericks on the new Mac and , when I used migration assistant, avoiding transferring the network settings. It was my mother in law's Mac so I essentially only transferred her documents and mail messages. I then went back later and manually transferred the music and photos. I ' knew' there was some issue with the OS itself because I had tried to clone the old system with Super Duper as an extra back up and even that balked with an error. Shrit Pocket Supprt read the error file and it was they who divined that that my "old" copy of OSX was corrupted. Plus I was umm more familiar with this scenario as this was the second Mac that I was having this issue with. Admittedly both the upgrades in question were from Macs that had been transferred and transferred and transferred etc so I am not surprised that there was something crappy that had got passed through. Bottom line: clean install of Mavericks then manually move over what you need is the cleanest way in this scenario unfortunately. Yes a whole lotta work!

Mac air start up,then pop-up yahoo mail screen, and ask me type password..how can i cancel it

Ok, finally I figure it out!!
You need to give computer access to the password of Yahoo.com
You go to the application "Key Chain" that is included in your MacBook Pro.
Then you go to the first tab that should say something with "Login/Session" and you should see all your saved passwords.
Scroll down to the saved password of  "Yahoo: your-username @ ...
Click on it, you should see a window opening
Go to the tab "Access Control"
Then click on "Allow all applications to connect .. ", NOT the option "Ask every time for allowance" or you can also just add the program "MAIL" with the "+" icon !!
There you go, now you should not have to worry again !!!!!!
(this step copy form someone posted)
    Anyway can fixed it!!!!!
