Sometimes cannot start PC: problem with Hitachi SATA Hard drive and K7N2G-ILSR

I have major problem with my 160Gb SATA Hitachi hard drive and my MSI K7N2G-ILSR motherboard.  Sometimes the PC can be started, sometimes it cannot.
After I installed a clean build of Windows XP Pro SP1 onto my new hard drive (as the only hard drive in my PC) and install all the necessary drivers, the system runs smoothly.  However, after about 2 to 3 weeks, sometimes when I start the PC, it cannot detect the hard drive and hence it claimes that it cannot find any VMI Pool Data (i.e. no OS detected).  What makes it really horrible is that, it is like the lottery everytime when I start the PC.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  The highest record was 8 consecutive failures (by resetting or by turning the power off and on again) before I can start the machine properly.  Also, the system sometimes just crashes in the middle of operating.
I have already sent the hard drive back to Hitachi.  Got the same model of hard drive back as replacement, but the replacement has the same problem, except with the replacement drive the PC can be started eventually after many tries, while with the previous drive it is possible that the PC cannot be started until after a few days later.
Also, it seems that my drive can detect either SATA hard drive or PATA hard drive, but not both.  (If I leave my old PATA drive connect in the primary IDE channel, Windows cannot detect the new SATA drive.)
Is my motherboard faulty?  Can it only use PATA drive?
My PC's spec is as follows:
AMD Athlon XP 2500+
512Mb PC3200 SDRAM (set to run at 166MHz)
Hitachi 160Gb SATA Hard drive on 1st SATA channel (Model #HDS722516VLSA80)
Sony DVD+-RW drive and Panasonic DVD-ROM drive on secondary IDE channel
Use onboard video (GeForce MX)
US Robotech V92 internal PCI modem
SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Player soundcard
Onboard audio disabled
300W PSU
OS is Windows XP Pro SP1 (with all latest security patches up to date)

that is not entirly correct.
many harddrives just come with different ways to connect them.
the only sata drives i now that spins faster is western digital raptors 10k rpm.
all other is running at 7200rpm.
older drives run at 5400rpm
Yes to get the full benefit of RAID, the Raptors are the way to go.Anything else, no significant difference.

  • Problem with Ipod mini Hard drive and i Tunes

I have no songs on my ipod yet for some reason it says that it is about 3/4 full on the apple summary. I have the newest update version. On top of that when I press the restore button it says an error has occured called 1428 (code of error i believe). So basically I can't play many songs on this thing and it is being really ********. I have reset it to no avail. I also had this same problem on the older version. I have called Apple tech support but they have put me on hold for like 20 minutes and they really suck.

Because of the price I'm not interested in solid state drives, unless of course you want to send me $1,000.
I've already got external drives but I take my mini back and forth to work and don't want to carry those drives with me.
I'm not interested in buying a laptop. My mini works great so why waste $1,000 or more when I can buy a 1 to 3 TB hdd for under $300 and have exactly what I want. My late 2009 Mac Mini with a large hdd.
I went to Crucial's website and they can't tell me what drives fit my Mac Mini. That's where I got my ram (8GB). I'm ONLY interested in name brand quality HDDs.

The limiting factor in your 2009 mini is the max 9.5mm drive thickness.
One of the largest capacity 2.5" drives that meets this criteria is the HGST (formerly Hitachi) at 1.5GB
Any reputable SATA HDD you can find that is not thicker then this 9.5mm will work.

If you are trying to recover photo stream photos, they are only held in iCloud for 30 days.  All you would be able ro recover is photo stream photos from the last 30 days.
If you have an iOS device that still has the photo stream photos one it, you can save them to the camera roll by opening the my photo stream album, tapping Edit, tap the photos, tap Share, tap Save to Camera Roll.  Once in the camera roll, they can be imported to iPhoto on your Mac as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.

While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t use iCloud. There's an iCloud Support Community where everybody uses iCloud. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. https://discussions.apple.com/community/icloud/icloud_on_my_mac

  • Problems with Monitor after Hard Drive Replacement

I never had any problems with my iBook G4 until the past 6 months. I sent it in once because it wouldn't start up. They were able to fix the problem without replacing the hard drive. It malfunctioned again and the second time they had to replace the hard drive. I've had it back for about a month and 1/2 now and for the past three weeks, whenever I try to use it I get problems with my monitor. I'm not sure if the video card is going out or what? The image on the screen gets chopped up in horizontal and vertical line increments. Its really hard to explain but sometimes it comes in waves and I have to shut down my computer and walk away from it. Other times like right now, I'm able to use it for up to an hour but then it gets choppy again and I can't use it. My Apple Care Protection Plan expires in December and I want to get as much from it as I possibly can before I have to replace the laptop altogether.

    sorry,
to clarify, "internal or external;" display
    internal = ibook display
external = display connected via display adaptor
Ok, well I max out the graphics on my ibook on regular intervals (games, high-end graphics work, gigabyte photoshop files etc...)
It isn't likely to be the hardware, so here's some suggestions.
    LOOSE WIRES/CABLES:
The ibook's internal monitor connects through the central pivot where the ibook opens, the wires in here may be damaged. (you can't fix this yourself, refer it to apple) this could pertain to a loose or defective cable is you are using and apple display connector also.
REFRESH RATE: (this sound like your problem)
    to quote a source:
"If the refresh rate is not properly set the monitor may have a wavy or an appearance that lines are going down or across the monitor slowly or fast. This may also cause a flickering affect."
    http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000242.htm#02
This is set in display preferences. try setting your monitor's refresh rate. (75hz is good)
    INTERFERANCE:
Monitors are succeptible to electromagnetic interferance: Speakers, hard drives, phones etc. try moving them away from the monitor.
    BAD MONITOR:
finally; and we hope this isn't the problem. if you are not already doing so, connect an external monitor to the ibook using the display connector (VGA only), if the issue persists with the external monitor the problem is software based, if not you probably have once of a small percentage of monitors that just goes "bad" after a time period, unfortunately it's often cheaper to replace an entire unit as opposed to the screen itself (new computer)

  • Problems with iomega External Hard Drive on MacBook Air

    Hi community!
I'm experiencing some problems with my MacBook Air and an external hard drive and I'm wondering if anybody would be able to help me out.
I own a MacBook Air running Mac OS X 10.7.3. When I connect my iomega 500GB external hard drive, the Finder is able to pick it up, but when I click on the drive name, it spins forever without the Finder responding for a long time (it basically crashes the Finder with a spinning ball staying forever). The light on the external hard drive flashes intermittently when I first plug it in, but after that stays constantly lit. So I guess the disk has power, but something else is wrong with it.
It was working fine earlier today but I accidentally pulled the cable out while the disk was working. I'm hoping this hasn't permanently damaged my drive.
Any help on what I could do to fix this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    SV

You might try launching Disk Utility, and then select the drive in question to run a "Verify disk" on the drive. This may indicate any errors in the file system of the drive that might be preventing the successful reading of the disk.
If the disk is empty, you may want to re-partition and reformat, so as to start with a "clean slate".

  • Major Problem with Multiple External Hard Drives! Watch Out!

I've almost completely given up on Aperture and gone back to Iphoto due to a major glitch in Aperture that actually cost me loss of some wedding photos (approximately 20)! Watch out for this, it is damaging.
I have 3 external hard drives, and of course when you mount disk images and cards you gain them in finder on the left hand panel. It seems the order of the mount is crucial to Aperture locating things and consequently if the mount order changes Aperture can no longer locate the files, and worse if you import to hard drive it doesn't import to anywhere!
The situation I have is that the other day I was importing wedding images and was up to the last card (fortunately we had 2 photographers so the loss isn't as detremental) and the power went off. Happens a lot where we are.
So upon power comeing back on the external hard drives remounting, I have figured out they mounted in a different order to what they were previously.
So upon going back to Aperture I went back to importing to the same external hard drive location. It had no warning of a problem and seemed to import without a problem. However once it had finished, on clicking on the thumbnails the images wouldn't load. I imported again and the same problem happened, however I didn't realise and had deleted the files. When I realised I tried to locate the files using spotlight. They are no where to be found!
Also because of the re-order of my hard drives aperture can't locate previously imported (referenced) files. I can find these ones on the hard drive, so I haven't lost them, but it will take unmounting and mounting several times in different orders to try and get them back because I do not remember which way they were mounted!
This is terrible! Aperture is a mess. This sort of thing shouldn't happen. Besides it's still too slow and it has slowed my production time substantially. The only thing it has over Iphoto is it doesn't degrade the JPEG each adjustment. However in Iphoto this is negligable, it can't be noticed, and I am not going to sacrifice time, lost photos for a minute level of extra quality.
Aperture get your act together. I wasted my money back when I purchased the full price 1.0 version.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?

    Hardly high and not mighty.
    But, to your points.
It sounds like you do have a UPS, not a surge protector, though it probably provides this in addition.
The fact that your external drives dropped during import is the same as removing a drive without unmountingf it, yes? Who knows what state the inode/allocation tables look like and no surprise that any clusters part updated were dropped. They'll rebuild from the cast complete mirror, but in-flight changes would not necessarily have been written to both sets of tables.
I cannot understand why (for you) Aperture appears to need the drives mounting in the same order. Disk Utility may show something, but I suspect you tried this.
However, and this I do challenge, the fact that you blamed Aperture and stated categorically it behaves a certain way when it does so only under some odd or errored hardware condition is not the thoughful optinion of an experienced Mac user. I wish you no offence but despite what you observed and your experience, I do wish to correct your sweeping statement.
The other comment I would challenge is that "I'm writing for people to watch out for and to trial ..." I would agree with that statement if that was any part of the context of the original post. No, your original post was far more negative and accusatory.
Your other new comments are clearly based on issues causing you angst. I have felt most of them, but at the end, it is software. Perfect? No, but I haven't had a crash since 1.5.1. Far from perfect? Yes, and many features missing that may be added in v2, v3, v.... . Best for my purposes despite its faults? Yes, by far. It is the fastest and most productive way for me to get to end-of-job.
Now my question for you since: what in your view is a superior alternative? Many on this forum are professional/serious amateur photographers who want some software company to succeed. Perhaps the reason we contribute to the Aperture forum is because we've found it the best horse to ride and therefore want to see it improve.

  • Problems with an external hard drive

    Hi Guys,
Looking for a bit of help here. I have recently converted to a 13" MBP from a PC. I transferred ALL my photos, files and music from my PC to an external hard drive with the thought of keeping it there and obviously using my Mac to open the files as and when i wanted.
BUT, i wanted to use the external hard drive with my Mac and back it up with the time machine. So i transferred all the files and photos back to a PC so I could wipe the external hard drive and format for the Mac. Which I did.
So nowwwwwww. The hard drive wont appear when plugged in to a PC. ***. What can I do now? I'm guessing the only thing is to do a wireless migration?
I just want the hard drive formatted so i can use with Mac and store and edit video mainly. And i want all my photos and stuff on the hard drive.
    Any help?

NTFS is the normal drive format for PCs.  Macs can read but not write to NTFS unless you have third party NTFS software.  PCs cannot use Mac formatted drives without speical software.  Both can use FAT format, but it has certain drawbacks.

  • Fubar with my external hard drive and not all Match items will play in iTunes on my Air but will on Apple TV. Any thoughts?

My entire library is on iTunes Match however after a recent fubar with my external hard drive, whilst I can play all my music through Apple TV I can't access it all on my Air. This was the original device used to download. Any thoughts?
There doesn't seem to be a specific period in my purchasing/downloading that this applies to. For instance, Adele 21 album downloaded at the time isn't playing but Skyfall the single is. Emeli Sande new album downloaded when it came out delivers this message: The song “Heaven” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it? Same with Bellowhead which was a physical CD uploaded.
I'm not very technically minded so if anyone can help this poor, frustrated individual I would be very grateful.

When you say "when i double click on my itunes files it just opens up this list of music." it doesn't mean anything to me. You need to explain clearly, remember I only know what you tell me.
I need to understand how you have things set up and if you had you iTunes library database on the external drive or the c: drive. That is the iTunes folder containing iTunes library.itl.
What do you see when you open iTunes on the new PC, are your music files there. If not, every time you play a track it gets added to itUnes so you should at least have some files in your library.
What problem are you trying to solve? Is just getting the tracks into your iTunes library, or are you also concerned about ratings, count and playlists from the old PC. If so do you still have access to the old PC?

  • Lightroom with 2 external hard drives and SSD

    Hi,
I'd like to buy a new laptop with a SSD. But I won't be able to store my whole photo library on there. So what I'd like to do is store my latest photos on the SSD while they are new and I'm doing the most work on them. I'd also like to have those files stored on both of two external hard drives. One on the drives will be at my house and function as storage and as backup. The other will be off site at a local relitives house. Every month or so, I will rotate the hard drives and the other hard drive will become my at home storage and backup and the first will go to live at the relitive's house. Every so often, I will go and delete older files off of the SSD and then they will only exist on the two external hard drives.
How would I do the file managment within Lightroom? Right now all I can ever do is to move my files onto new folders on an external hard drive. I can't get them to copy.
I'm also open to other ideas of how to manage these tiny hard drives that Apple has decited we all will have. I just can't imagine how to do it now and don't want to buy a new machine until I have all the details planned out. So if you have ways that work with your SSD let me know. I don't want to use cloud storage and the laptop will be my only computer.
    Thanks,
    Brian

    Hi,
You can export the files you want to edit to a new cataglog on the ssd. Open this catalog and do your work. Import the work catalog into the old one and apply the adjustments to the images.
If you want to delete images from your work catalog you can only mark them for deletion. Delete the images after you reimported to Lr.

  • I want to use elements 11 with an external hard drive and need some help.

I have a macbook pro and was fine using iphoto 09 as my image manager and editor. I soon filled my hard drive and purchased a 1tb external hard drive. I moved my iphoto library to the external drive while keeping iphoto on the macbook. I recently installed elements 11 and was using it as an external editor with iphoto. I began to play around with the organizer and found that I liked it. My question is how do I move my iphoto library to elements 11 organizer while still keeping the photos on the external hard drive.

If you import from iPhoto into Elements Organizer, the files will be copied to your hard disk and all the organization done in iPhoto09 will be carried forward to Organizer catalog. This can be done if you have enough space on your hard disk. However if you want to use Organizer solely + not create duplicate copies of your images, you can import photos directly from the Hard Disk. Ensure to write all metadata to files within iPhoto so that when the same photos are imported into Organizer, the tagging done is brought along.
    Thanks

  • Using Time machine with an external hard drive and AEBS???have a

I have a 500GB external hard drive that I have connected to my AEBS by USB. Recently upgraded to Leopard but cannot get time machine to see my hard drive.
    The base station is 802.11n.
    Is this possible?
Have read a few other threads and can't seem to get to the bottom of it.
    Thanks,
    T

In addition, when you get Time Machine to be able to see your external drive connected to AEBS, in TM prefs exclude all but one small folder from your hard drive (say, /User/Library) and allow TM to do its initial backup. This will create the sparsebundle (resizable disk image) that TM uses to back up to a network drive.
Then turn off Time Machine, unmount the USB drive and reconnect it directly to your Mac, mount it, set TM prefs to use the sparsebundle that newly-mounted drive, remove previously excluded items from TM's exclusion list, and turn TM back on. TM will then back up everything much more quickly than if connected wirelessly.
After that, you can return the USB drive to the AEBS. Incremental backups take much less time, so the slower connection won't matter as much.
